Led by the Holy Spirit ,
Growing Christ’s Church Deep and Wide
Cindy and I are pleased that for at least the next year you and I will
be serving together in ministry and mission in Christ’s name. We have
been graciously received and warmly welcomed. For that, we are grateful
and thank you.
In these early weeks, we have been working at putting new (for us)
names and faces together and the harder task of remembering your names
and faces. We look forward with eager anticipation to knowing you and
being known by you. So… a few words about us – we have lived in the
mid-state for over 20 years. I was the pastor of Hope United Presbyterian
Church in Dauphin and Cindy was the Director of Christian Education at
Market Square Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg. Now we are both
retired. Cindy has just begun a Master Gardeners course and I spend time
working with our Presbytery’s Commission on Ministry.
Why would I want to take on the responsibility of Temporary
Pastor of Dickinson? There are three reasons. First, in my visits with the
leadership and congregation, I have found a joyful, enthusiastic and
thoughtful community of faith. Second, I think that Dickinson is a healthy
congregation and I want it to stay that way. Third, having recently been
set free of all connections with a congregation, Cindy and I were looking
for a place to worship and serve with regularity. So, here we are –
together.
I call to your attention three significant events of worship, service
and fellowship happening in October. In worship on Sunday, October 2,
we will gather around Christ’s Table. This is always an important time but
the special significance of this Sunday is that so many of our sisters and
brothers in Christ will be doing the same in commemoration of World
Communion, something we Presbyterians have been doing for over 50
years. On Saturday, October 8, Dickinson will hold its Turkey Supper, a
fellowship event for church and community. This is a time for feeding
both body and spirit. On October 16, following worship, there will be a
congregational meeting for the purpose of electing elders, deacons, the
nominating committee and the personnel committee. I know that many
people see this as just another meeting that groups must do to keep the
organization going. I hope that is not how you see it. In the church, we
believe that through the voice of the congregation God raises up the
people needed to lead a congregation at a certain time. This is an
important time in the life of Dickinson Presbyterian Church.
I invite you to join us for these times of worship, service and
fellowship because, as an important member of the body of Christ, the
church needs your thoughtful, prayerful, wholehearted participation.
Grace & Peace to you,
Jack
Thanks to our fearless leader, Carl, we enjoyed
a beautiful afternoon of hiking in
Pine Grove Furnace.
Fun was had by all.
Hope you can join us the next time!
October Bake Sale
The Spiritual Growth Team is sponsoring a bake sale to be held each
Thursday in October (10/6, 10/13, 10/20, and 10/27) at the food wagon at
Rowe’s Auction House. These proceeds will be used toward payment for the
St. Paul’s Brass performance at our annual Christmas Benefit Concert
Fundraiser for Project Share on December 11, 2016 at 7:00 P.M.
There will be a sign-up sheet posted in the CE building. Donations can be dropped off at
the church on Wednesday or Thursday morning or if you need to have your item(s) picked up
please note this on the sign-up sheet.
As we anticipate the majority of the sales to be in uncut, whole items, we would
appreciate items to be packaged in non-returnable pans. If you are going to supply cookie bar
items, please wrap or bag them individually or in the quantity you would like them to be sold.
If you have any questions please see or call Jane Eberts at 241-6458.
Turkey Dinner
October 8, 2016
3:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M.
Fall is right around the corner and Dickinson Presbyterian will
be kicking off the season with a turkey dinner.
Volunteers are still needed to help with the dinner. If you can
help please see the sign up sheet in the CE Building. If you
have helped with one of our dinners before, you know it can be a lot of work.
However, the fellowship, the laughter, and the good feeling you get makes it
all worth it. We hope you will be able to join us on Saturday, October 8th. If
you can’t help, please come and have dinner with us. Bring your family,
friends, and neighbors.

2016 Holiday Scheduling
During the upcoming holiday season, both
Christmas and New Years Day fall on Sundays. Our
Spiritual Growth Team would like your input in
planning these services. We will, as always, be holding our Christmas Eve Service.
We understand that family demands and scheduling as well as possible travel
may affect your ability to join us for worship on these Sunday holidays; and so, we
are interested in learning if your plans for these holidays include church attendance.
We would also welcome your suggestions and/or creative ideas for these
services and fellowship times together.
During the worship services on 9/25, 10/2 and 10/9 you will find a
questionnaire included in your bulletin. We will be asking you to complete this form
in order to place it in the offering plate. We thank you for your participation in the
planning of our upcoming holiday services.
Thanksgiving Blessings
Let’s fill the Little Red Wagon for the Big Spring Food
Bank at Thanksgiving again this year. In November the wagon
can be found in the front of the Sanctuary ready for your
donations.
Let’s be thankful for our many blessings by being a
blessing to others. Let’s share our bounty and our prayers with those in need this
Thanksgiving!
Thank you card received:
Thank you all for the support you have given me during the
past years. Everything that has been given to me helps.
