President`s Message - Congregation Beth Shalom
Ruach 6800 35th Ave NE Seattle, WA 98115 206.524.0075 Congregation Beth Shalom • Voted in JT News—Best Congregation from 2009-2012! August 2014 • Av - Elul 5774 Volume 46, Issue 11 R ABBI’ S M ESSAGE - F ROM R ABBI A DAM R UBIN Perhaps because of our son, Elior’s loving embrace of his new baby sister (most of the time), or the remarkably warm and caring welcome we’ve received upon our arrival to Seattle, I’ve been thinking a lot about love lately. Thoughts of romance are appropriate this time of year, given the jarring shift in the Jewish calendar from the fasting and sorrow of Tisha B’Av to Tu B’Av - the fifteenth of Av - a minor holiday devoted to matters of the heart. Called chag ha-ahavah (the holiday of love) in contemporary Israel, Tu B’Av has its earliest origins in the Mishnah, from which we learn that “the daughters of Jerusalem” would dance in the vineyards dressed in white on the fifteenth of Av (and on Yom Kippur as well!), saying to their male suitors, “Young man, lift up your eyes and see what you choose for yourself…” (Ta’anit 4:8). It is telling that this teaching, along with a more elaborate discussion of the holiday in the Babylonian Talmud, is not part of some separate section on romance or marriage, but rather is embedded in a somber discussion of the meaning and ritual practices surrounding Tisha B’Av. Unlike ancient Greek philosophy - which later played a key role in influencing Christianity - the Jewish tradition does not create distinct categories for romantic love and religious passion; there is no fixed boundary between Eros, passionate physical love, and Agape, which implies love in the spiritual sense. Indeed, Maimonides understands the second verse from the Shemah (“You shall love Ha-Shem your God with all your heart, soul, and might…”) as requiring a feeling for God that can only be described as romantic: What is the proper [degree] of love? It is when one loves God with an exceedingly great love, until one’s soul is bound up with the love of God. Thus will one be always intoxicated with this love, as though sick with love. For a lovesick person’s mind is never free of love for one’s beloved, forever drunk with the thought of the other -- when one sits down, gets up, eats and drinks. Even greater than that should be the love for God in the minds and hearts of those who love God, intoxicated with it at all times, as we are commanded (Deut. 6:5) ". . . with all your heart and with all soul. . . ." (Hilkhot Teshuvah 10:3) Lovesick? Intoxicated? The Rambam is clearly comfortable extending feelings of romantic passion to our spiritual life, to our relationship with the Holy Blessed One. But how can we cultivate such an attachment to God? And perhaps even more difficult, how can it be maintained over time? The sages of the Talmud concede that like human relationships, our connection to the Divine has ups and downs, and the fires of first love can cool considerably over time. This applies not only to our feelings for God, but the reverse – God’s relationship with the people Israel: It used to be said: “When love was strong, we could have made our bed on the blade of a sword. Now that our love is weak, a bed of ninety feet isn’t wide enough for us.” R. Huna said, “The same is hinted at in Torah. At the beginning, it says, ‘And I will meet with you and speak (Continued on page 2) INSIDE THIS ISSUE: President’s Message LEGACY Over the last few months my life has been full of complex, trying, beautiful and sometimes sad moments of transition. Over a 6 week period starting in mid-May, whilst preparing my Mom’s home for sale in Massachusetts, I was called to Arizona to say good-bye to my Father-in-law who had gone onto hospice. In the weeks following, a dear young friend succumbed to his battle with cancer, my mother moved to Seattle, and my dear friend and Beth Shalom member Tony Moore went into the hospital at my insistence. And in the end, it says (Isa. 66:1) ‘Thus says the Lord: The heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool. What house could you build for me?’” worships God out of love engages in Torah and commandments.” In other words, the devotion and love we invest into visiting those who are ill, inviting guests into our homes, and praying and studying as a community (to take just a few examples), are capable not only of expressing our love for God, but of sustaining it. While “love at first sight” might generate passionate intensity for a while, time erodes even the most ardent love, and even the Creator of the Universe isn’t immune from this process! Our relationship with God, just as with people, must be carefully cultivated and nurtured over time to keep the fires burning. Fortunately, Judaism provides a powerfully effective “aphrodisiac.” Rambam puts it very simply: “A person who TOY-RAHSTORY TO INFINITY AND BEYOND: OUR STEP INTO THE BIGGER, BETTER FUTURE We are welcoming Rabbi Adam Rubin and Liat Levit to Beth Shalom with a party! (Continued from page 1) Shockingly, Tony and my Father-in-law died 8 hours apart that next week all before May was over. I hope that my legacy at Beth Shalom will be remembered. I pray that at some point in the far future someone will say, Throughout this all my family, friends and community have “I love that tune for the kiddushah prayer…do you remember been there giving support to me and James. Every year we face these holidays, hoping for a fresh start with difficult rela8onships and with ourselves. How can the liturgy help us learn to be kinder to others and to ourselves? In this class we will look closely at selected recurring prayers from the High Holiday liturgy. The Shofar blasts, the 13 a?ributes and the al het (communal confession list) will be explored. Viewed in new ways, the liturgy can be a source of encouragement and strength. *Free Course* Everything you wanted to know about SIN but were afraid to ask Tuesday, September 16th, 7:00-8:30 pm with Jeremy Alk We’ll be discussing the original sin in Judaism and the different categories of sin throughout Jewish tradi8on.
