Boating Activities Sub-Committee Quarterly Report
I am pleased to report the boating activities conducted at the Tingira Boat Club from September
through to the end of November 2014. It was certainly a busy and exciting time with many club
members involved in the planned events. We also had the pleasure of sharing our adventures with
members of the Wooden Boat Association of Queensland (WBAQ), The T. S. Walrus Navy
Cadets and students of The Eagle Academy. I sincerely thank all those who assisted and/or
participated in these on water activities.

Swallows and Amazons Messabout
(Friday 26th September - Wednesday 1st October 2014)
This six day event was held in partnership with The Arthur Ransome Society (TARS) and
the Wooden Boat Association of Queensland (WBAQ). The event was named after the
first title in a series of children’s sailing adventure books written in the 1930s and 40s by English
author Arthur Ransome.
On Friday the clubhouse was a hive of activity with members preparing for the six day event.
Preparations included a comprehensive display of Swallows and Amazon’s books and
information. A working bee had mowed and tidied the grounds so that things were shipshape
for our visitors.

The socialising commenced in earnest that Friday night with the club hosting a casual bbq with
30 or so people enjoying a pleasant evening out on the club deck.

Saturday - Cruise to Coochiemudlo
Saturday dawned sunny with a very light northerly blowing. There was a buzz around the
grounds as the boats prepared for the morning sail to Coochiemudlo Island.
Signed on for the first sail of the messabout were no less than 14 boats.
The boats all started together from the Pontoon. In the light breeze it was difficult to stem the
tide but eventually the fleet was off to Coochie for morning tea. And what a great sight it was
with the coloured sails of all sorts and sizes. After a relaxing visit and morning tea on Coochie
beach the fleet enjoyed the return sail home to Macleay Island in a little more breeze.

Saturday night was the Swallows and Amazons Pirate themed dinner with over sixty people
attending. Ruth Venner generously applied her artistic talents to prepare a beautifully hand
drawn welcoming banner that was placed on the foyer wall.
A delicious meal of Corned Beef, Potato Bake and Crunchy Salad was prepared by
Barbara and Sid Cooper. The meal was tasty and the camaraderie excellent.
Prizes were awarded for best dressed pirate, best totem and best burgee.

Those camping out in the club grounds kicked on with a nightcap, eventually crawling into
their little tents at around midnight. Some of our visitors from WBAQ slept aboard their
boats at Dalpura including Elaine and Phil Brown aboard “Playstation Too” and Larry
Loveday camping in in his Mirror 16 “CVII.

The Secret
Water Raid Sunday 28th
September
Sunday dawned
sunnily for the
Secret Water
Raid. The day
promised a bit more
wind, this time from
the south-east.
Larry Loveday
was up early and
had his boom tent
out to dry by
6:00am and soon had it folded and stowed away.
Lex Baddiley (WBAQ) arrived in ‘the mother ship’ with a wooden putt putt in tow and
anchored off the clubhouse in the deeper channel. Local woodcarver Ted Upton launched
his large outrigger canoe with the help of a fierce pirate.
The atmosphere was fantastic as the fleet gathered for the start at the Club Pontoon. What a
colourful spectacle it made. A mixed fleet of 24 craft including 16 wooden boats, grp dinghies,
catamarans, putt putt’s, a wooden keeler, three off the beach cats and the outrigger canoe
headed for the Club Pontoon and the start line in a variable south-east breeze.
From the starting line (at the club pontoon) crews sailed, rowed, paddled or put-putted their
boats on a SW course down the Macleay/Garden Island passage. After passing the Garden
Island jetty boats turned west and made their way through the shallow Garden Island shortcut
(Secret Water). The crews had a delightful Swallows and Amazons adventure trip through
Secret Water with a light tailwind. They then had a nice reach/ beat to finish back at the
Pontoon.

Although it wasn’t a race (but of course it was), the first boat to finish was Harland Fling
(a beautiful Chamberlain Rowing Dory built by Tony Harland!) with owner Paul Driver
working courageously and furiously at the oars. The first sailboat to finish was the Calypso
Catamaran owned and sailed by Tingira member Chris Wheeler. The sight of all the boats
on the beach or at anchor after the event was fantastic.
Back at the Tingira Clubhouse, a sausage sizzle was soon underway and the bar was open.
The organisers quickly ascertained the winners of the awards including nearest to the
Commodore’s mystery time to complete the course. (Mystery Time = 1hr:37min:17secs)

Well, as the festivities drew to a close those overnighting it on the deck (tent people!) enjoyed a
BYO dinner feast on the deck consisting of freshly baked salted peanuts, pizza, roast lamb
slices, chicken kebabs, pavlova (Moya’s raffle prize) and a tipple or two.

Swallows and Amazons Messabout Overnight at Blakesley’s
Monday morning dawned and those overnighting in the Club grounds packed their tents and
loaded equipment into their boats for the final stage of the S & A Messabout.
Tony and Lyn Harland in “Lola”, Ian Kirk in “Pug” and Peter F and Ivan Scott in “Not
Duffers” sailed to Blakesley’s in a lightish northerly for a night’s camping. Bruce from Coochie
who had been a day visitor for the duration of the messabout also sailed over in “Mystery”.
They were joined there by four larger Tingira Boat Club boats; Robert and Allison Hopgood in
“Idler”, Mike Stephens in “Sirius”, Willem Guillot and Melody Hill in “Janika”, Alene Ivey and
Guy Hickey in “Bonnington”. Also joining in for a day trip were Tereska and Niah Hart and
Paul Hemingway who travelled over in Paul’s Bermuda Quintrex. Also Erwin Pitsch & Tony
Warren travelled over in Erwin’s Seafarer motorboat.
After an enjoyable visit the day trippers departed and the campers put up their tents. As the sun
began to set, Willem hoisted Janika’s “It’s Drink O’clock” flag and the campers and
overnighters enjoyed a sundowner (or two). What a beautiful sight it made with the anchored
boats bathed in a Blakeley’s sunset.

The campers enjoyed a social evening around a fire recounting past boating adventures and and making mandatory comments such as “we should do this more often”.
The forecast for Tuesday was for a freshening NNW so the three small boats set off early with “Not
Duffers” and “Pug” reefed. The breeze didn’t increase until later in the day so an enjoyable sail
home was had. Tony and Lyn had to enjoy ‘coffees at Camillas’ at Redland Bay marina while
waiting for enough tide to reach home.
Meanwhile Mike Stephens in “Sirius” and Allison and Robert Hopgood in “Idler” decided to keep
to the planned itinerary and stay out for another night. They relocated to a quiet anchorage in
Caniapa Passage. They enjoyed the night anchored in a semi protected hole at the site of the old
sand loading jetty on North Stradbroke. They returned to their home ports on Wednesday.
All in all it was a wonderful six day messabout with great boating and socialising There was great
camaraderie between the Tingira Boat Club and the Wooden Boat Association of Queensland. The
event also included a good number of local boaties not connected with either club.
Many positive comments have been received about how great the weekend was and it being one of
the best in a long while. This just proves how beneficial partnerships can be with the Tingira Boat
Club members and the WBAQ members all winners.

The table shows that a total of 33 boats (sail, motor, paddle, or row) were involved in the
S & A Messabout. 3 million cheers and sincere thanks for all those that participated.

10th Brian Calvert Memorial Trophy Sailing Event
This year’s event attracted 13 nominations with all managing to complete the course. Adding to
the interest of the race was the nomination of five Jubilees. They were also competing for the
Jubilee Plate. The event started at 11:00am from the club pontoon Tingira which was anchored
off Dalpura. In a light and flukey northerly breeze it was difficult for most boats to stem the tide
as they sailed upwind to pass the first mark (the Potts Point red beacon) to port. Once clear of the
red beacon, the fleet quickened pace and was off to the Banana Bank Cardinal Beacon.
They then sailed east towards North Stradbroke Island to an orange buoy set just west of the
Wallen Wallen green beacon.
The third and final leg was downwind. With spinnakers flying, the yachts made a colourful
spectacle as they sailed towards the finish line. First across the line was Yani Hai a Hobie 14+
catamaran skippered by Ralph Munro. Closely followed by Sirius (with Margaret Calvert on
board) skippered by Mike Stephens. Third across the line was the Jubilee Stella skippered by Paul
Driver. The Brian Calvert Memorial Trophy however is awarded to the handicap winner who
this year was Dave Gemmell and Alison Early sailing in the Jubilee Beverley.

A Thank You to The Volunteers
Three million Cheers for the volunteers who worked in the background:
The club pontoon Tingira was used to start and finish the event. Tingira was crewed by Brian
Sutton (skipper) with Annette Sutton and Keith Fox overseeing the start and finish of the
event.
Seahaven 2 our shepherd boat was skippered by Norm Black and crewed by Barbara Cowell
and Geoff Hiley.
Vice-Commodore Max Keily manned the Tingira VHF radio base-station.
Judy Smith served behind the bar to ensure there were cold refreshments during and after the
race.
Commodore Nev Prosser, Cathy Keily, Heather Sorby, Jocelyn Shinnie and Helen
Driver kept the home fires burning and manned the BBQ and prepared food to feed the ravenous
spectators and sailors. Our race committee consisting of Michael Stephens, Ivan Scott and
Tony Harland assisted with the handicaps and the on-water arrangements.
Brian Calvert Memorial Dinner
The Memorial Dinner was held the following Saturday on 18 October. The evening featured a
delicious three course dinner, live music and dancing and the presentation of prizes and awards.

T. S. Walrus Navy Cadets Visit - Saturday 25 & Sunday 26
October
The T. S. Walrus crew paid the Tingira Boat club a visit on the last weekend of October for a
two day sailing camp. Approximately 20 cadets and 5 leaders camped in the club grounds
overnight. Our club bus assisted with their transfers to and from the ferry terminal.
Club sailing instructors and experienced sailors Ivan Scott, Robert Smith, Paddy
O’Donnell, Michael Stephens and Peter Fox assisted the Walrus cadets with their sailing
program.
Brian Sutton, Annette Sutton, Robert Corbett and Keith Fox helped with support and
safety boats.
Unfortunately the weather was not all that kind and blew strongly from the north and with the
ebbing tide made for difficult conditions.
A big thank you to Robert and Judy Smith who assisted with the dinner on Saturday night. They
spoilt the cadets with some of Judy’s fabulous Pavlovas (I think it may have been the highlight for
some of the cadets!). The cadets and their leaders expressed their appreciation of our Club
providing the facilities for their sailing camp and promised that they would be returning soon.
P.S. Since the camp the T. S. Walrus unit have donated a 420 Sailing Dinghy to add to
our fleet. Robert Smith has travelled to the mainland and towed the 420 sailing dinghy
back to the club. Presently he is working on it to make it shipshape.
The Eagle Academy Sailing School
Following the T.S. Walrus weekend, 10 students from The Eagle Academy (Broadbeach Campus)
landed at Tingira for a week long sailing course.
The Eagle Academy caters for Australian and international students undertaking studies in
sports, fitness & recreation. Greg Knitter, the Managing Director of the Academy, is a resident
of Macleay Island. Greg approached the club early this year in the hope of making use of our
club’s resources and sailing instructors to provide a week long sailing course to add to the
Academy’s curriculum offerings. After negotiations the club agreed to undertake the course.
On Monday 27 October the students arrived at the Tingira Club eager to commence their learn
to sail adventure. They were hugely enthusiastic, cooperative, friendly, interested and motivated.
They wanted to be there! Straight away, there was a feeling that this would be an enjoyable
experience for both the students and our club instructors and support crew.

Interestingly the mature age students were from all over the world (with Robert Smith referring
to them as the League of Nations):
Stella Triquet (France), Pablo Nunez (Mexico), Gus Cirulli (Argentina), Rieki Rodenburg
(Netherlands), Andie Brisdon (Canada), Anna Smith (English), Chiaki Ojima (Japan), Sasha
Reading (Russia), Melissa Hely (Australia) and Jeromie Newnham (Australia).
The week long course was designed to teach students the basic skills to sail a small boat in
controlled conditions (SISOYSB201A).
This included:
Interpreting weather and environmental information; identifying potential hazards &
keeping safe; rigging and de-rigging the boats; basic knot tying; learning parts of the
boat; launching and landing the boat; performing capsize drills; towing skills; leaving
and returning to the shore and sailing a marked course in calm conditions.
It is pleasing to report that with the enthusiastic adventurous spirit of the students coupled with
the dedication of the teaching team, all students successfully achieved the desired outcomes.
By Thursday afternoon the students took control of the Vagabonds and were able to
independently sail them around a triangular course (and with no capsizes).
All students were successful in attaining their Eagle Academy sailing qualification.

The week was successful in every way:
The students enjoyed their week long stay on Macleay Island and departed with fond memories
and their newly acquired sailing skills.
Our instruction team and support crew had an invigorating week and the pleasure of passing
on their sailing skills and knowledge to the young students.
The Eagle Academy were very grateful for our efforts and gave the club a donation of $2000
and a Scope 2 door commercial fridge (valued at $1000)
But more importantly was this from Greg Knitter:
“I write to you to formally express my sincere appreciation for the efforts of all involved in our
recent great week of sailing. The week was thoroughly enjoyed by all of our Certificate IV in
Outdoor Education students. The group of students from Canada, Mexico, Argentina, UK,
Japan, Netherlands, Germany and of course Australia were given an experience to cherish
forever, as well as gaining valuable knowledge and sailing skills from your fabulous team of
volunteers.
I hope your volunteers gained even a fraction of the enjoyment and satisfaction as that
expressed by the students.
Teachers are said to “Touch the future” when they teach, and in the case of all your
volunteers, they have extended that to being fondly remembered, quoted, and talked about
on virtually every continent on earth, for many years to come.”

One of our most enjoyable dinners of the year is
very close at hand (only a week away).
Providore Jocelyn and her team are busy
planning a fantastic dinner that will begin with a
complimentary glass of sparkling wine or fruit
punch and then canapés, salmon pate entree,
followed by a cold festive buffet including turkey,
ham and pork accompanied by salads and
vegetables. Desert will be traditional Christmas
pudding, trifle and pavlova finished with
seasonal fruit and chocolates. Entertainer
Murray O’Shea will provide live music and there
will be plenty of dancing to enjoy.
