Communiqué
The Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce
September 2011
Our sunny days continue to bring lots of guests to our area. As we wait in the line of
cars, we can think about the expanded business opportunities the visitors bring to our
Chamber members. We can also help visitors with directions and recommend local
Chamber businesses. Though September is the official start of Fall, we still enjoy great
weather and a steady stream of visitors.
We welcomed NOAA MOC-P to the community at their open house. I toured the
newest ship the Bell M Shimada; it was very impressive. The NOAA dedication was well attended. Dignitaries from
local, State and Federal agencies provided comments and many remarked at the welcoming spirit that Newport
exhibits.
On that same day was the ribbon cutting for Marine Science Drive and the ribbon cutting for the Oregon Coast
Community College Aquarium Science building. It was a great day for Newport and Oregon!
This month, on September 4th through the 6th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the annual Toledo Art Walk will take place.
The 18th year of this event will include live music, artist talks, resident artist Michael Gibbons (Chamber member
who was one of the founders of the event) and guest artist Don Prechtel, and Vel Miller. Take the opportunity as
many do to participate in the city-wide art walk and view nearby Yaquina River Museum of Art exhibits. There is
free admission for all exhibits. While in Toledo, visit your fellow Chamber members with storefronts in the
neighboring town. Several other events will occur in September. Be sure to visit our Chamber’s online ‘Calendar of
Events.’
We have had good turnouts and fun at Business After Hours the past few months. Join us the third Thursday at 5:15
p.m. and network with your fellow Chamber members. Also join us whenever you can for a Friday luncheon.
There are many opportunities to get involved in Chamber activities. The Chamber has numerous committees that are
seeking additional members. If you are interested in participating as a Chamber Ambassador, Young Professional,
on the Seafood & Wine Committee, Beautification Committee, Hospitality Committee, or other Chamber
opportunities, get in touch with the staff at the office for details on how you can become involved and engaged in a
dynamic organization!

New Owner For Local Gem & Jewelry Shop
For over 20 years, since 1987, FACETS has catered to rock hounds, gem cutters, collectors, jewelry craftspeople,
and interior decorators--both amateur and experienced. Now that the prior owner, Richard Petrovic, has left on a
well-deserved retirement in Idaho, and Kay Myers, formerly the manager, will take over the business, keeping it
locally owned and operated. Her 40-plus years of experience with rocks and gems as well as her affiliations with
gem/mineral industries throughout the nation make her well-qualified to continue providing quality jewelry repair,
merchandise and service. FACETS is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 1250 NW
Grove St. (Newport, OR) across from the Newport Business Center and one street west of McDonald's. Further
information is available at (541)265-2514 or www.4facets.com
Young Professionals Lunch Mob
The Yo-Pros hold a monthly lunch-mob at a Chamber member restaurant; helping support a local business and also
providing a venue for networking. We have recently added a community oriented spin to our lunch mobs and we
will focus on a local non-profits at each lunch-mob. Our upcoming lunch-mob will support CASA. We encourage
you to attend, socialize & network amongst your peers. Our next lunch-mob is scheduled for September 8th at

August was a great month in Newport. The weather was great, the spirit was great
and by the looks of traffic, visitor count was great as well.
Usually in the summer there is a brief window of time from July to about the end of
August where our behind the scenes work is slowed at the Chamber and our visitor
services and front of house really get busy. The office has been busy with guests this
summer, but the behind the scenes work has not slowed down a bit. There are many
things going on in the community that we are actively involved in. As well, the
Chamber Board held their Annual Retreat and Goal Setting in August.
In addition to all of our current programs of work at the Chamber we will focus on
three areas in the coming year. The first goal that the Board identified is somewhat a continuation from last year - the development of a permanent facility for the Seafood & Wine Festival. A new committee was formed this summer and they
are looking at options and opportunities that could include partnership with the County and the Fairgrounds development.
We will be looking at our options over the next few months as information unfolds.
The second area of focus is on Economic Development. This is an area that is no stranger to the Chamber. For many years
we provided services for the City of Newport with an Economic Development program of work. We will be forming a
committee, and identifying goals, and by working collaboratively with Economic Development partners we hope to help
toward achieving those goals.
The third area of focus is ‘Telling our Story’- often times we dive right in, do the work, and then are slow to toot our own
horn. What the objective of this goal will be is to inform and educate about Chamber programs, benefits, and opportunities.
We are fortunate to have opportunities to be in front of large community audiences throughout the year. Every week we
have a Friday luncheon at noon at various venues that offer community/business programs for our members. We also have
a radio program every Monday morning at 8:30am on KNPT. In July a page called “Voice of Business” was launched in
the News Times which will feature our calendar of Chamber events and other topics of interest. Our website is another
means in which we provide information.
We have a great Board and a dynamic staff and we will move forward through the year as productive as ever!
On another note, many of you may have heard that we are looking at a fourth day for Seafood & Wine Festival. Several
steps were taken before making the decision to move forward with the addition of Thursday, which included a survey of
vendors, discussion and exploration at the committee level, the board level, among staff, and fielding input from
stakeholders and service providers.
The 35th Seafood & Wine Festival will be kicked off by a Thursday night “soft opening” to commemorate our 35th
Anniversary. A limited number of tickets will be available for the event. The hours will be 6 pm to 10 pm, and we are still
working on all of the other details that go along with an additional evening. The theme this year is “Swinging on the Vine
for the 35th Time”. The Festival is set for February 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 26th, 2012. Stay tuned for more information as plans
unfold.

What is the difference between a great leader and a great manager? A great leader will most likely
be charismatic, be a visionary, and will possess the ability to motivate others to want to follow in
his or her footsteps. Great leaders provide stimulation, promote dialog, and inspire those around
them. These are excellent characteristics for a person who is at the helm in any given workplace.
How about a manager? A manager organizes, may provide technical skills specific to the job, and
is able to navigate the choppy waters of change that any organization experiences from time to
time. Managers provide hands-on assistance and garner respect and loyalty from their employees.
These, too, are excellent characteristics to have.
Next Meeting:
September
14th
8:30AM - 4:00PM
Topic:
Introductions,
Leadership &
Management
So which approach is best? Leadership Lincoln is a program designed by the Greater Newport
Chamber of Commerce with the cooperation of the Oregon Coast Community College to address
both effective leadership and productive management skills. This 10-month course, now entering
its twentieth year, focuses on knowledge of the area, ethics, culture, industry standards, communication, and other valuable skills that will enhance each participant’s executive and administrative
expertise. With well over 500 graduates, this program has stood the test of time and remains one
of the foremost classes offered in Lincoln County.
Applications for the 2011-12 class are currently being accepted. You may download a form from
www.newportchamber.org, or email Mike, (mike @newportchamber.org). $450.00 covers the
cost of ten classes, program materials, and two graduation banquet tickets, in addition to six
college credits. The Chamber would like to thank West Coast Bank for providing a scholarship
every year to a Not-For-Profit organization employee for several years.
Class moderator Dr. John Baker, college liaison Janice Redmond, and Chamber of Commerce
Leadership Lincoln coordinator Mike Yost are looking forward to the upcoming program, and
anticipate another remarkable year!
Congratulations Mariner Square!
The Bay Front has been an integral part of our area since before the
early 1880s, when Newport became incorporated. In its early
years, the Bay Front was home to the business district, post office
and ferry landing for the ferry from Yaquina City. As other
neighborhoods such as Nye Beach developed, streets and
boardwalks began connecting districts, forming a more cohesive
community. Today, the Bay Front has one of Oregon’s largest
commercial fishing fleets, and boasts many gift shops and
restaurants. Situated along that historic street is Mariner Square,
who garnered the August Beautification Award from the Greater
Newport Chamber of Commerce.
Mariner Square, which is comprised of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!,
The Undersea Gardens, and The Wax Works, has maintained a
lovely landscaped area, filled with colorful annuals and lush, green
shrubbery all summer long. Visitors and locals have the
opportunity to wander the Bay Front, and then take advantage of the benches dotted around the property, to sit and people watch.
It is a lovely location that this neighborhood can be proud of.
Mariner Square Awarded the August 2011
Beautification Location Award
If you would like to nominate a business for a Beautification Award you may download an application form at

Dr. Steven Brown, Kim Rampley and Dr. Dan
Lewer of Animal Medical Clinic.
For most of us, once we arrive at work, we are dealing with creatures of a
two-legged persuasion. For Kim Rampley, receptionist for Animal Medical Care,
that may not always be the case. Many of the visitors to her reception area have
four legs, a furry body, and a wet nose. Kim’s primary role at work is to be the
“face” of Animal Medical Care. She efficiently checks in clients, often several at
once, while at the same time, answers the telephone and provides support to the
staff at the clinic. Kim is compassionate in her dealings with owners, whose “best
friend” needs veterinary care, and makes certain that both owner and pet are
reassured and prepared for their visit with the doctors. Her co-workers agree that
she is an irreplaceable asset to the office, and that her problem-solving skills, good
sense of humor and attention to detail are all characteristics that make their job
much easier. No task is too great or too small; Kim will lend a hand wherever
needed. Says her boss, “Kim is the definition of a complete employee…” which is
why Kim Rampley has been named Employee of the Month for August.
If you wish to nominate an employee who exhibits characteristics that include Quality of Service, Friendliness, Role Model or Knowledge of the
Area, download a form at www.newportchamber.org or send an email to Bobbi, ([email protected]).
To help kick off the month long Yaquina Bay Bridge celebration, the community is
invited to attend an Open House at Aquarium Village. Starting at 11:00 a.m. on
September 3rd, visitors can meander through the Village and enjoy an assortment
of vendor booths. Artisans will have their studios open for glass blowing
demonstrations and retail shops will be offering “Bridge The Gap” sales.
A car show, beer garden and live music will add to the festivities. Of course, it
wouldn’t be a celebration without food! Whether it’s Texas BBQ with fixin’s,
prepared by Wild Bill of Outlaw BBQ & Rib Co., or fresh, home made sourdough
bread and clam chowder from Fishtails Café, you will not leave hungry. Children
will love the face painting, and enjoy a visit to the Buccaneer Bay Outlet, where a
pirate ship (complete with pirates) will be on hand to welcome “those little
mateys!”
Join in the celebration, show support for Newport, and don’t forget to sign the gigantic Yaquina Bay Bridge Birthday Card.
If your business is interested in doing anything special to celebrate the
Bridge’s 75th Birthday during the month of celebration, please
