January 2013...Happy New Year!
It’s about this time every year that many of us start thinking about making New Year’s
Resolutions. You know lose weight, exercise more, eat better, and play more golf. Those
are a few of my regulars. Last year my daughter Amber, who is a Special Education
teacher in the Portland area, set a goal to read the Top 100 Novels ever written based on a
list developed by Random House Publishing. She finished half of the list, although admits
she hasn’t read them in order but jumped around. Most of these are lengthy publications;
she probably would have accomplished her resolution, but found a number of other books
she wanted to read through out the year that were not on the list. She gets her love of reading from her mother. I think she’ll carry this resolution over to next year to finish the 100
books, you know just like I always do with my list of resolutions I mentioned earlier.
What’s on your list of resolutions? Here are some I’ve thought about. You might consider volunteering with one of the
many deserving non-profit organizations we have in our community, or if you want to keep your volunteering even more
local, help a friend or neighbor with childcare or if they are older, mow their lawn, take them shopping, or help clean their
house. If you cook, bake for someone who might enjoy a batch of homemade cookies or a pie. Volunteer at one of Newport’s schools, beginning with Head Start through high school, what ever age group of youngsters you feel most comfortable
helping. Both the city and county have many volunteer opportunities as well. Finally think about the Chamber and all the
ways you can get involved by participating on one or more of our committees. The Seafood and Wine Festival is just around
the corner and it takes hundreds of volunteers to put this important Chamber event on each year and it’s a lot of fun to boot.
Think about sponsoring or co-sponsoring a Chamber event, come on the “Chamber in Action” radio show, or join the
Chamber Ambassadors. These are but a few of the Chamber opportunities you might consider.
What will the New Year bring? One of my favorite philosophers, former baseball player and manager Yogi Berra, once said,
“I hate to predict things – especially the future.” We each have the responsibility for what happens to us personally, to those
around us, and for the community where we live in the year ahead. Or as Yogi also said, “If you don't know where you're
going, you'll probably end up somewhere else." President Abraham Lincoln (who after all is who our county is named after)
said, "The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.” Burt and Bobbie Lippman celebrate their wedding
anniversary every month on the 27th; let’s celebrate the New Year one day or month at a time, just like the Lippmans. I’m
reminded of an old Irish blessing, “May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings, slow to make enemies, quick to make
friends. But rich or poor, quick or slow, may you know nothing but happiness from this day forward.” May your coming
year be one of good health, happiness and prosperity. Wishing you and your family the greatest New Year!

Lincoln County Fairgrounds Farmer’s Market
A community of shoppers, farmers, food producers and artisans of Lincoln County have come
together to form the Lincoln County Fairgrounds Farmer’s Market. The market meets an
increasing demand for locally grown foods, artisanal crafts and specialty foods during the winter
months. This Lincoln County Fairgrounds Farmer’s Market highlights small farms from within
Lincoln County and surrounding coastal communities and will specialize in seasonal produce and
farm products, and local artisanal foods and crafts. The Fairgrounds Farmers Market promotes
agriculture in Lincoln County by supporting small farms and encouraging customers to “buy
local” year ’round. The market is open on Saturdays from 10 to 2 in the Main Exhibit Hall at the

Happy New Year!
As 2013 arrives many of us find ourselves resolving to
change or shift certain behaviors or habits that we desire
to change. Some are personal goals or resolutions. Some
are professional or business related. No doubt that recent
tragic events will shape some of what many will resolve
to do.
One simple inspiration that I heard this week, that was so simple yet very profound, was a challenge by NBC's Anne Curry (who happens to be an Oregon girl).
Her message was this... "If you do good, you'll feel good"-Acts of Kindness.
It was in her blog from 12/18/12 with a simple challenge that I found powerful and
inspiring, and I think you will to.

While many of us resolve to do something new in the coming year, many of us
find ourselves barely remembering what it was we set out to do after several
months! While this article may not have the same impact or meaning to others as it
does for me, I found this one resolution simple, and if we all set about to do the
same, we will have a positive impact on our lives and the lives of others.
I hope that each of you will have a Happy New Year filled with many moments
that are meaningful and joyful to you and yours!

What is volunteering? It’s an activity where people give of their
time and talents, and without financial gain, offer to share their
knowledge, expertise and skills for the benefit of others or for the
community. The overall Festival is administered by the Newport
Chamber of Commerce staff but for an event that draws nearly
20,000 visitors over a four day period, this undertaking requires
more than six people.
Each year, Newport Seafood & Wine Festival volunteers provide the energy and assistance to carry out the
goals outlined by the Festival Committee. Volunteers bring many things to the table: ideas and concepts,
skill sets, and a plain old “extra set of hands.” Starting with the Committee, many local volunteers begin
meeting with staff the summer prior to the Seafood & Wine Festival to formulate ideas, work on logistics
like parking and site set-up, and in general to shape and develop how the event will take place.
As an attendee to any event of this nature, you probably haven’t given much thought to who places the
directional signs by the road to guide you to the tent, or who takes your ticket at the gate. What about the
volunteers who work with vendors to set up before you even arrive? There are helpers who monitor and
clear away trash during the day, and parking attendants who brave the elements and help you find a space.
There are shuttle bus volunteers who make sure that shuttles and schedules are adhered to. Behind the
scenes there are banking assistants, emergency responders and festival monitors doing their part to make the
Festival a seamless, worry-free experience for each guest. And at the end of the day, volunteers work with
staff to clear away, evaluate and get ready for the next morning.
There are volunteers of another sort….those that work in vendor booths for many of the 20+ non-profit
groups that participate with the Festival as an annual fundraising endeavor. These folks also give of their
time and efforts to promote and expand the objectives of their particular outreach.
The Newport Seafood & Wine Festival is a fun, vibrant place for event goers, but one of the underlying but
still remarkable factors is that this community’s volunteerism shines through year after year. We can be
proud… and humbled to be a part of it all.
