[email protected] s most of you already know the 2014 Election for Board of Director Members has been successfully concluded. At this election only two of the five board positions were up for election. The newly elected members for the two year term to end in 2016 were Carole Barlin and Tom Hallick. The retiring Board members are Marie Rassman (termed out) and David Raphel. I know we all want to thank both Marie and David for their devoted efforts on our behalf. It was a rewarding experience to work with both of these dedicated and intelligent people, who have shown over and over, that their sole motivation was to provide the best for our community. They put a great deal of effort into what, in many cases, were time consuming and difficult tasks. Serving with them has been a privilege. Because this letter was written Tom Hallick and Carole Barlin in mid April, due to required printing lead times, the officer and Management Council positions have not yet been finalized. You will be notified as soon as this is completed. I’m sure all of us welcome and thank Carole Barlin and Tom Hallick for agreeing to join the Board. I look forward to having them on our team, and working with them to help us keep the Marina City Club a wonderful place to live as well as a financially sound organization. Mixed Doubles Championship he mixed doubles tennis tournament at MCC was fabulous this year! We had eight teams competing in the Gold Division and two in the Silver Division. New members, Jon Dennis and Kristen Marquis won out over long time members and tough partners, John McIntyre and Ellen Travis, 6-1, 6-3 in a fun match on court number 3. The Gold Division had the defending champs, Nancy Closson and Mike Levitt at the top of the draw and Joan and Stephen Hall at the bottom. We T Mike Levitt and Nancy Closson defeated Joan and Stephen Hall featured a double-elimination draw that was completed in one day! Joan and Stephen got through Jim Richards and Lucy Walker in the first round, then fought out a tough match with Carlos Dunkerly and Donna Leventhal in the semis. Big hitting by the men and consistency by the women made this match contentious, but again the Halls prevailed. In the top half, Mike and Nancy played Marva and Bill Baumgart in a very tight set 6-4. Next they competed with Maryella and Bill Pegnato. Nancy and Mike pulled that one out 6-2, but the points were good. In the last main draw match, Nancy and Mike edged the Halls, 7-5. In the back draw, the Baumgarts played great to get through their first match against Marv Benson and Linda de Villers before succumbing to Carlos and Donna, 6-3. Lucy and Jim beat out Mike Skolnik and Sheelagh Boyd to play the Pegnatos, but Bill and Maryella proved too much as they went through 6-1. The Pegnatos battled it out against Carlos and 4 Donna for the right to play the single-loss Halls. In the end, Carlos and Donna got to the back-draw finals 6-4 over Bill and Maryella. Stephen and Joan were determined to have a rematch with Mike and Nancy, as they struggled through a very game team in Donna and Carlos, 7-5. The finals were amazing! Mike and Nancy started out icecold and the Halls took advantage, winning 9 Silver Champs Jon Dennis of the first 10 games in and Kristen Marquis the match for a 6-1, 30 lead. Nancy and Mike kept egging each other on to stay strong and focused in the face of the excellent play of Joan and Stephen's monster serve. Slowly, the ship turned as Mike and Nancy kept shot after shot in play and forced errors from the slightly pressing Halls. They evened the set at 4-4, then momentum shifted as they closed out the set with a strong hold by Mike. The final set was decided by a ten-point tiebreaker. It went back and forth with long rallies and careful lobs before someone would attempt an offensive shot only to have it thwarted by the speedy footwork of Mike or Joan or the quick hands of Stephen or Nancy. Finally, the score arrived at 9-9. The players were tense and again, careful, high percentage tennis prevailed as Mike snuck a lob over Joan's head and then forced a net cord error, to end the match 11-9 in Silver Finalists John McIntyre and Ellen Travis 7 y1 a M , rday es ps l b u Do ionshi p - 4 p.m. ivisions m a Ch 9 a.m. Gold D Gene's Tip of the Month: Satu d p an ayer i h s 6 or l n 2 p o i 3 / p $15 at ext. 3 Cham 2 e Gen t ext. 2 t c a Cont renda a today! B up Sign the tiebreaker. Scintillating tennis on a gorgeous afternoon with 40 MCC spectators watching and enjoying barbeque at court #1 ended with another classic final, 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 as Mike and Nancy won for a third straight year! Thanks to all the players who participated. Our next tournament is the Doubles Championships on May 17th. Sign up with Gene today! Fans enjoyed good weather and great tennis “Da Body Serve” erving into the body, particularly in doubles can be extremely effective. Three reasons the body serve works so well: 1. People do not expect it. Everyone is always looking for the ace or trying to cover the angles on the return of serve. When it comes right at them, many players are startled. 2. It is safe. When looking at a second serve, placing it in the middle of the box is much easier than trying to create angles. You don't have to hit it hard if you hit with some kick or slice so that the ball keeps moving into the forehand, that's right, the forehand, hip (right hip for a righty and left hip for a lefty), then it is more about the placement than the power. That said, a hard, flat serve right at 'em also works well! 3. Although you rarely get aces out of body serves, you do get floaters that your partner can pop for a winner, which makes holding serve easy and makes your partner feel good about his contribution! S To practice: Set up a basket or a box right in the corner of the baseline where most people stand to return serve, then try to hit a serve that goes over or hits the basket after it hits the service box. Remember, it's more about where the serve crosses the baseline than where it lands in the box when you go into the body.
