For editorial information, please contact the Executive Office: phone: (310) 822-0611, Ext. 236 T Message from the President By Mark Fleischman, President of the Marina City Club Condominium Owners Association, Inc. [email protected] his is to bring you up to date on what has happened at the Marina City Club during this past month. Alexandria Pollock (Lexie) has taken over as Seabreeze manager of the MCC and has been busy familiarizing herself with the staff, property, and its various issues. After consultation with the Board and a number of homeowners, she is concentrating on Property Services regarding security issues and we will hear more from her soon. In regard to gate security, we have developed a system where we can speed up admissions through the gate by emailing your request three plus hours before your visitors arrive to [email protected] with your name, unit #, and the name of your visitor. This way, the green car ID form will be filled out in advance and in the hands of the gate attendant, which we expect will speed up the line. I’m happy to report that the aerobic floor in the gym has been completed and a proposal has been entered into for repairs to the men’s sauna as well as preventative maintenance on the women’s sauna. The agreement, which was signed October 16th, provides for completion within 45 days. Many of you may have noticed that you are getting emails in regard to emergency building issues, i.e.: water shut offs for repairs etc., however, we only have 200 or so email addresses. The Board and Management would appreciate it if you would send your email address to [email protected] so that you can be added to the list to receive this important information. Also we still need more volunteers for Floor Captains regarding emergency preparedness so please consider this and send your contact information to [email protected] if you are interested. Management and the Board are exploring prices for earthquake insurance to cover the building and will be back to you within the next few months. However, it is possible to get individual earthquake insurance issued by Safeco Insurance and backed by CEA at reasonable rates, which would cover the contents and improvements in your unit as well as assessments up to $75,000, which may be levied as a result of earthquake damage. This can be written by any insurance broker. fax: (310) 578-4905 e-mail: [email protected] 3 2014 Calcutta he Calcutta was an amazing Karen Berliner tournament this and Carlos year. This is one of my all-time favorite questions because it is so crucial to a player's development. The short answer: "Not very." I would say on average, for most tennis strokes, the grip tightness can be rated on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being a death-grip you'd use to choke out Charles Manson if he were in your house and a 1 being barely keeping the racket in your hand. If you are a beginner, I would recommend you hold the racket about 10-20% tighter than H recommended here. Once you've established your strokes and are hitting the sweet-spot consistently, loosen up. For groundstrokes, hold a 3 or 4 out of 10; for volleys a 3-5, depending on the speed of the incoming ball, but still, loose is preferable. For the serve and overhead, a 2-3 is best. You really only want to grip the racket tight enough so that it doesn't fly out of your hand or become unstable at impact. If you are out of position or off-balance, you may have to firm up your grip because your lack of stability in your core muscles will have to be compensated for by your extremities (arm, hand, and wrist). If you are in good position and have good balance, then keep your grip as loose as possible. I realize this sounds counter-intuitive, however, if you want a smoother, more powerful swing, a loose grip is paramount to generate racket-head speed (rhs), the backbone of advanced and improving tennis players' strokes. Think about a whip versus a two-by-four board. Which goes faster at its fastest point? Although I'd like to say the whip's tip breaks the speed of sound, that theory is still in dispute, however, I can safely say that the tip of a whip goes faster than the tip of a board at its fastest point. Therefore, the more whip-like the tip of your tennis racket is, the faster your rhs, and the more power you will impart on the tennis ball. In addition to power, a relaxed grip also relaxes the body and mind, putting you more in control of your movements and decisions when playing a match. Anxiety is your enemy on the tennis court. Developing a looser grip will create less tension and a more relaxed attitude that translates into better strokes, and eventually into wins. 5 Susan Stohrer, Fitness Director www.marinacityclub.net Tuesday, November 11th 6 In honor of Veteran’s Day, Herman Jordan will be showing his collection of war planes & air crafts in the dining room from 6-9 p.m. Fitness Center Hours for Thanksgiving Weekend: Wednesday, Nov 26 5:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m. (regular day & classes) Thursday, November 27 (Thanksgiving Day) 7 a.m.-1 p.m. (modified class schedule) Friday, November 28 7a.m.-8 p.m. (reg. class sched.-weekend hrs) Saturday, November 29 7 a.m.-8 p.m. (regular class schedule) Sunday, November 30 7 a.m.-8 p.m. (regular class schedule) Club Council Meeting Tuesday, November 13 5:30 p.m. Galaxy Room Meetings take place every other month and are open to all MCC members (residents and non-residents).
