Michelle’s New Job . . .
I have just started a new job as a gardener and cleaner
for a company called Pounamu. I will work with Jasmin
and David they are nice people and very helpful. I will
bus there.
On Wednesday afternoon I raked the leaves and put
them into the compost heap. Roger took me there for a
trial run (taster). We picked
walnuts and put them into a
bucket. We got some eggs
from the hen house. I got 7
eggs and put them in a egg
carton. Roger got his share of
eggs.

Maori Group
Naumai haere mai, welcome to the Maori Culture Group.
We are learning about Te Reo Maori through cooking. To do this we are cooking every second Thursday, and the following week we add the recipe we have tried to a
book we are developing.
We are trying to learn the Maori words for the foods we are using in our recipes.
Here is a sample . . .
Poaka (Pork) Bones
Riwi Potatoes
Kareti Carrots
Korare Sliver beet
Water
Place pork bones into pot with water, place on heat. Prepare vegetables by roughly
chopping them. Add potatoes and carrot. Boil until meat is tender and falls of f the
bones. Add silverbeet in last 15mins.
Serve in bowls, and enjoy!
If you are interested in having a copy of our book, just call the office.
Bike Safety Skills Course - James from Bike NZ took Barry,
Dean, Scott, Kayla, Chris O and Jerry on this course, held over
two Friday mornings. The aim was to equip them with a greater
awareness & knowledge of the
importance of 'Safety' on the
roads.
We learnt these awesome tips:

Importance of the bike safety check [helmet, brakes, tyres]

Ride in a straight line – at least 1 metre from parked cars

Signal your intentions clearly – 3 second warning to turn

High visibility clothing / lights at night

Be aware of what’s around you [ traffic/pedestrians/car
doors opening/potholes

Be considerate & patient –slow down near parked vehicles or other stationary obstacles [pass only when safe]
Thank you Maurice Carter

later this year!

Tape Art . . . .
A group of artists from SkillWise spent two days learning about tape art and were part of a
community mural project where they put their creations on a city centre wall. This workshop resulted from collaboration between SkillWise, Deaf Aotearoa NZ and Tape Art NZ.
Thanks to Erica Duthie and Struan Ashby from Tape Art NZ.
