Jackie Wiese – Legend of Maties Sport Retires at the End of 2014
For some four decades Jackie Wiese poured her heart and soul into Maties Sport and dramatically
changed the landscape of especially Maties Hockey.
In the years leading up to Jackie joining Maties she played hockey for the Free State. She was part of
the Kovsies team that in 1970 won the first ever South African University (SAU) title. Along with a
good friend she also started residence hockey at the University of the Free State. In 1972 she joined
Maties. Jackie played in the Maties team that won the Western Province Grand Challenge league for
the first time in 1973. This year, Maties women won the title for the 30 th time.
One can write a book on that which Jackie has achieved at Maties Hockey. But before the highlights
of 25 years at the hockey office are given, here are some Jackie Fast Facts: She played for the
Western Province Pens team, she coached WP u21, Pens and Boland; she was a qualified South
African referee; she was chairpersonn of SAU; member of the WP executive and even did some radio
work.
Jackie joined Maties Hockey part time in 1980 and in February 1981 she was appointed full time. The
first of the now legendary hockey camps was held in 1983. These camps not only contributed
financially to Maties Hockey Club, but also set the stage for many special moments. One of the most
memorable was when Marelize de Klerk – affectionately known as Stokkies – blew the whistle for the
first time in a hockey match. Stokkies retired as the best hockey referee in the world. In October 1991
the men and women’s hockey clubs became one club known as Maties Hockey Club. Jackie also
coached the 3rd and 4th Maties women’s teams for a while. One of the major moments in the club’s
history was the first astro field in 1995. The prelude to the water based astro in 2005 – a watershed
moment for Maties Hockey. It’s clear that if it were not for that water-based astro exactly at that time,
Maties Hockey would not be on the level and standard it is now.
September 2005 Jackie became Director of Maties Sport after wearing the hockey cap for 25 years.
Along with the opening of the water-based astro, making the dream of an Olympic standard 50m
swimming pool at Coetzenburg a reality is another highlight for Jackie.
“When I look back at my time at Maties Hockey and Maties Sport I learnt that nothing worthwhile
comes easy. I have always said that Maties Sport is not because of, but despite of. We had to make
things happen. Sitting and throwing your hands in the air when things does not go your way, never
was an option.”
Jackie said that she need to thank Maties Sport for teaching her to always use initiative and not to just
accept it when things are not going your way. You always had to come up with a plan and put it into
action, she said.
Jackie, Maties Hockey and Sport need to thank you for not having, “give up” in your vocabulary. For
always putting Maties Hockey and Sport first and having the passion and determination to make
things happen.
In the words of Jackie herself: Once a Matie; always a Matie.

The Steinhoff Maties Hockey club has again enjoyed a very successful year. The success of the
revamped High Performance Program was reflected in the club results, not only with regards to team
performances but also individual achievements. Both the men and women’s teams won the Western
Province Grand Challenge League and the women who won the USSA 2014 title. 8 Players
represented South Africa and two coaches were selected as national age group coaches.
The club had the opportunity to host a touring team from Argentina at the start of the year. The team
enjoyed the beautiful Stellenbosch setting, challenging hockey and friendly hospitality on offer at the
club. A total of 3 such club matches were hosted by Maties.
Steinhoff as a sponsor enjoyed maximum benefit from their investment, with the club’s ever growing
and extremely popular Koshuis section. The Koshuis section included the highly competitive Summer
League to start the season. 53 teams competed for the two titles. Winter league, had 56 teams
participating in 4 men and 4 women’s leagues. Rhenish GHS triumphed over Maties V in the women’s
Super League final and Steinhoff Dagbreek were the men’s Super League Champions. The club also
hosted two successful pre-season tournaments during March.
The 32nd Maties Hockey Camp hosted 27 Teams from all over South Africa and Namibia. 64 club
members assisted with coaching, umpiring and administration of the camp. The camp was a great
success, and our thanks are extended to all who assisted with the project.
A new WPHU league structure for the 2014 season saw a number of our teams competing in a
stronger, more competitive league to previous seasons. The teams coped well with the new
challenge, with 5 of our 10 teams ending in the top three of their respective leagues. The success of
the first two men and women’s teams is mainly attributed to the High Performance Program. The
men and women’s 1st teams took Grand Challenge League honours, the Women’s 1st XI won the
USSA competition and the Men’s Varsity Sport Team ended 2 nd to UJ in the competition final. Vics
women’s ended 3rd in the Women’s GC league and the Vics men retained their GC status with a
credible 6th position.
8 Players represented SA at a senior level in 2014, 27 players represented WP at senior IPT and 41
players represented Western Province at u21 IPT.
Two coaches were appointed as SA u18 coaches.

Maties Hockey and Steinhoff continued with their successful partnership in 2014 for the eighth
consecutive year.

SUMMER LEAGUE
The tournament produced hockey of a high standard, in both the men’s and women’s section. It
was also a platform to showcase new, talented hockey players joining Maties as first years. In
the Men’s division Steinhoff Helderberg had no trouble booking their spot in the final alongside
Paul Roos Gymnasium. The Women’s final was contested between Bloemhof and B Pink (last
year’s winners). The Men’s winners were Steinhoff Helderberg and the Women’s winners were
Bloemhof.

2014 has been another successful year in all aspects for the Maties Hockey club, on and off the
field. Some successes which must be highlighted, have contributed to making this year

There are many aspects which need to all be in sync for everything to run smoothly within the
Maties Hockey Club. Yet, 2014 has shown just how possible this is and we thank each and
every individual involved in adding their contribution, support and hard work during this year.
Nothing great can ever be achieved without hard work – we have seen the results, so let us
keep working hard!

them for giving their all throughout the long season, playing with pride for Maties and continuing

PRE-USSA VOORBEREIDING
Die pre-USSA oefeninge was goed beplan en het goed verloop. Die voorbereiding het op
Woensdag 18 Junie begin en het die naweek voor die toernooi geeÏndig.

VERVOER
Beide spanne het van die HPC busdiens gebruik gemaak om vanaf OR Tambo lughawe tot by
die akkommodasie te kom en weer dieselfde busdiens terug na OR Tambo toe. Beide die mans
en vroue span het ook elkeen, een Toyota Avanza gehad wat hulle kon gebruik gedurende die
toernooi.

VERBLYF
Die vroue en die mans het in die HPC tuis gegaan Die akkommodasie by die HPC was van baie
goeie gehalte en baie gerieflik. Dit was ook in stap afstand van die speelveld af.

ETES
Daar was R70.00 per persoon per dag begroot vir middagete en R100 per persoon per dag vir
aandete. Ontbyt was by die HPC geeet, asook meeste van die ander maaltye. Die daaglikse
begroting was voldoende en die reëlings vir die maaltye het vlot verloop.

FINANSIES
Die US Hokkieklub het R 30 000.00 tot die span en -bestuur se onkostes bygedra. Matie Sport
het R 35 466.00 en die totale onkoste vir die toernooi het R 200 347.82 beloop.

MATIES HOCKEY CAMP 2014
WARM UP PROGRAMME
The warm - up program was 25 minutes in duration which included the dynamic warm up.
STICKWORK STATIONS AND SMALL SIDED GAMES
The hockey camp program this year was a whole new program to what we did in the past. We
included small sided games into the program and this was a successful change we made to the
program. The u18 and u16 stick work groups once again followed separate programs. The stick work
sessions were divided into five main categories:





Passing Skills
Receiving Skills
Elimination Skills
Defending Skills
Goal scoring
SET PIECES AND TEAM BUILDING
This section of the program included attacking and defensive penalty corners, set plays, mini –
games, team building activities as well as sports nutrition talks.
GOALKEEPERS
Jacques Le Roux headed up the goalkeeper camp once again and was very successful once again
incorporating a vision session for the goalkeepers which was conducted by Grant Van Velden and his
assistants which the participants thoroughly enjoyed. This was a highly successful program, which
ensured the growth and development of the goalkeepers attending the camp.
COACHES COACHING COURSE
The coaches’ course again received exceptionally positive reviews. Themes discussed included:

 Rules and umpiring
 Didactics
 Sport Science
 Nutrition
 High Performance
Presentations were made by Jenny King, Adene Bennett, Karin Hugo, Sean Surmon, Vossie Dirkse
van Schalkwyk and Grant Van Velden.

TOURNAMENT MATCHES
The tournament was held each afternoon, and run on a round robin basis, ending with a winner in
each section.
UMPIRING
A successful 4 day umpires’ course was conducted by Vossie Dirkse van Schalkwyk which was
attended by a group of educators. Each umpire receiving an individual feedback form with their
Grading and were given recommendations for further provincial advancement. My thanks are
extended to Vossie Dirkse van Schalkwyk who headed up this section of the camp. We were able to
coach and grade those students interested in umpiring. Thanks are also extended to her fellow
graders.
GENERAL
My thanks are extended to Jacques Le Roux (GK), Jenny King and Adene Bennett who helped with
the design and management of the course program during the week.
To all the coaches, administration staff, club committee, Vossie Dirkse van Schalkwyk and Lorinda
Koen, thank you for making the camp the success it was.

MATIES HOCKEY INSTITUTE 2014
The yearly courses and coaching clinics have grown in strength and numbers and we continue to
provide an excellent service whereby we enhance the standard of coaching and umpiring as well as
the players’ skills and knowledge of the game.
This year there are more qualified people outside of the university who may present the SAHA
accredited coaching courses in the Western Cape, which has impacted negatively on the number of
people interested in the MHI coaching courses.
The umpires courses however, has more than doubled in attendants during 2014.
The Institute ran SAHA umpire and coach accreditation courses which were well attended. With the
expert coaches and outstanding facilities that we are fortunate to have here at Maties, The weekly
Junior Maties training sessions throughout the second and third term as well as the holiday camps
continue to be well supported. The institute also arranged a Mini Hockey Umpires course during
February and looking forward to hosting it again next year.
A new initiative that was started was the Group 20 for umpires. These umpires received rules
discussion, grading and coaching throughout the year. In return, they umpired both Summer and
Winter league matches for the Super leagues. This was a most successful initiative and of the 24
umpires in the group, 9 of them attended a provincial tournament of sorts during the year. This is
indeed a tremendous return on a new initiative.

Another new initiative was to host a Winter Camp for the primary school learners. This was a multidisciplinary sporting camp, with hockey taking the lead. Other codes also presented were tennis,
cricket, life skills, team building exercises and general ball skills.
The below table outlines the various courses that have run throughout the year. The institute is
running a Junior Maties 5-A-Side Tournament in the Fourth Term and we look forward to a good turnout to this tournament. Another set of coaching courses for coaches will be held in October.

KOSHUISHOKKIE 2014
Inleiding
Die 2014 Steinhoff Koshuishokkie seisoen was ‘n uiters suksesvolle een. Die wedstryde was hard en
die kompetisie straf, maar die wedstryde het in goeie gees plaasgevind. Ek wil eerstens graag vir
Vossie Dirkse van Schalkwyk bedank vir haar toewyding en harde werk dwarsdeur die seisoen. As dit
nie vir haar was nie, sou die wedstyde nie kon plaasvind nie. Baie dankie ook aan Maties Hokkieklub
dat al die Superliga wedstryde op die onderskeie Astro bane kon plaasvind.
‘n Groot dankie aan Steinhoff vir die borgskap van Maties Hokkieklub, wat ook deur filter na die
Koshuishokkie en die deurlopende ondersteuning en belangstelling wat Steinhoff toon in al die
Koshuishokkie aktiwiteite. Hierdie jaar het elke deelnemende koshuisspan n unieke kleur hempie van
Steinhoff ontvang wat nie net vie die Somerliga nie, maar ook vir die Winterlibga gebruik kon word.
Toernooie
Die 2014 seisoen het afgeskop met die gebruiklike onderskeie toernooie op 2 opeenvolgende
Saterdae in die eerste kwartaal. Die toernooie was die Eerstejaarstoernooi en die
Interkoshuistoernooi. Na n meningspeiling oor die voortbestaan van die Karanavaltoernooi, is bevind
dat met die baie suksesvolle Somerliga, is die Karnavaltoernooi net een toernooi te veel so vroeg in
die jaar. Daar is egter besluit op n “5-A-SIDE” toernooi na die winterliga voltooi is in plek van die
Karnavaltoernooi.
Dankie aan die komiteelede wat gehelp het met die organisasie van die toernooie asook aan al die
skeidsregters wat die wedstryde geblaas het.
Die toernooie was ‘n positiewe afskop vir die seisoen. Dit het vir spanne die geleentheid geskep om
mekaar te leer ken en om bekend te raak met die Koshuishokkie kultuur. Hierdie toernooie help
kweek die goeie gees van die koshuisliga en gee die spelers die kans om deel te hê hieraan.

Somerliga is elke jaar n groot toernooi met sterk kompetisie en wedstryde van goeie gehalte wat
saans onder die spreiligte op die astro plaasvind. 2014 was geen uitsondering nie, met die meeste
inskrywings nog sedert die toernooi begin het. 30 Vrouespanne en 23 Mansspanne het aan vanjaar
se Somerliga deelgeneem.
Klubspelers mag ook in hierdie toernooi speel vir hulle onderskeie koshuise. Dit sorg natuurlik vir
uitstaaande gehalte hokkie en verskaf ook net verdere rede vir die koshuise om hul onderskeie
koshuise te ondersteun en geesdriftige toeskouers te verseker.
Die finale is weereens in ‘n goeie feestelike atmosfeer gespeel. Die vroue finaal was tussen 2013
wenners B Pink en die Bloemhof span, terwyl die mans finaal uitgeveg is tussen Helderberg en Paul
Roos.

Die formaat van die liga het bestaan uit 4 ligas vir beide mans en vroue. LSL, LCL, L2, L3, MSL,
MCL, M2 en M3. Die Super- en Uitdaag ligas het elk 8 spanne bevat met die Maties V span wat
bygekom het in die Superliga; met die ander ligas opgemaak van die res van die spanne verdeel om
die beste liga aan almal te bie. M2 het 7 spanne gehad, M3 het 5 spanne gehad. L2 het 6 spanne en
L3 het 5 spanne gehad. Die eerste drie ligas van beide die mans en vroue ligas, het n rondomtalie
rondte gespeel, waarna hierdie ligas in die top 4 en onderste 4 verdeel het. Binne hierdie verdeling,
het die spanne dan in elke liga semi finale gespeel om te sien wie dan in die finaal speel om
sodoende die finale posisies van die spanne in elke liga te bepaal. Die onderste ligas van die mans
en vroue het beide n dubbel rondte van rondomtalie gespeel waarna dit die spanne in hulle posisies
laat eindig het.
Beide die Superligas se wedstryde het weereens hierdie jaar op Astro plaasgevind – waarvoor ons
baie dankbaar is en ons wil net baie dankie se daarvoor. Die nuwe inisiatief rakende skeidsregters se
Groep 20 wat deur Vossie van Schalkwyk inisieer het, het daartoe bygedra dat nie net die Somerliga
wedstryde nie, maar meer so die Winterliga wedstryde deur hierdie skeidsregters geblaas is. Dit het
die problem van student wat in die verlede nie vir Superliga wedstryde opgedaag het nie, opgelos.
Die Uitdaagligas se wedstryde is wel deur klubspelers geblaas. Die ander ligas se verteenwoordigers
moes self sorg vir n skeidsregter vir hulle wedstryde. Hierdie wedstryde het op die grasvelde by
Welgevallen of op die Coetzenburg velde plaasgevind. Die onderskeie ligas het gesorg vir spannende
en baie vermaaklike wedstryde.
Uitslae:
Hierdie jaar se aantal spanne wat deelgeneem het was minder as in die verlede, maar die
hoeveelheid mans en vrouespanne was vir die eerste keer ewe veel gewees. Beide mans en vroue
het 28 spanne gehad wat in die onderskeie ligas deelgeneem het.

Baie geluk aan die onderskeie wenners.
5-A-Side Toernooi
Hierdie toernooi is n nuwe toernooi wat in die plek van die Karnavaltoernooi asook die Top 4 Toernooi
aangebied word. Die hele idee van hierdie toernooi is om met die internasionale tendens van “small
sided games” as metode vir oefen en wedstryde in te skakel. Teen druktyd, was die finale nog nie
gespeel nie en resultate dus nog nie beskikbaar gewees nie.
Skeidregters
Soos verlede jaar voorgestel is, is ‘n nuwe inisiatief begin wat as die Groep 20 bekend gestaan het.
(meer besonderhede onder Instituut verslag) Die skeidsregters wat aan die Groep 20 inisiatief
behoort het, het die wedstryde van die Somer- en Winterliga behartig. Hierdie inisiatief het gekom
weens die onbetroubaarheid van die klubspelers. Die ideaal sal wees dat elke koshuis n skeidsregter
sal voorstel vir die groep en die persoon sal die nodige opleiding onvang en sal dan ingedeel word
om wedstryde te blaas deur die seisoen. Die inisiatief was grootendeels suksesvol, ons hoop egter
om volgende jaar meer skeidsregters in hierdie groep te he.
Die wedstryde in die Uitdaagligas is deur klubspelers waarngeneem, en ongelukkig is daar weer
bevind dat die klubspelers nie altyd opdaag vir hulle skeidsregters diens nie. Vir die klubspelers wat
wel opgedaag het, wil ons baie dankie voor se, dit word regtig opreg waardeer.
Ek wil net weer van nie geleentheid gebruik maak om vir Vossie dankie te se vir die skeidsregter
eksamens wat sy aanbied vir die koshuis verteenwoordigers sodat die ander ligas bekwame
skeidsregters kan hê. Verder ook net baie dankie aan die Groep 20 skeidregters asook die
klubspelers wat wel hulle tyd opgeoffer het om die Superliga en Uitaagliga se wedstryde te blaas.
Finansies
Die klub word hoofsaaklik gefinansier deur Affiliasie en Registrasiefooie. Baie dankie aan die
verteenwoordigers wat seker gemaak het dat die vorms ingevul word en ingegee word. Sonder dit sal
die koshuishokkie nie kan funksioneer nie.
‘n Nuwe uitgawe is die betaling van die skeidsregters van die Groep 20 inisiatief wat die Superliga
wedstryde geblaas het.
Boetes maak ook ‘n deel uit van die inkomste. Hoewel dit ‘n goeie bydrae is tot ons finansiële
welstand wil ons die koshuise aanmoedig om dit so laag as moontlik te hou. Baie dankie ook vir die
spanne en verteenwoordigers wat die reëls so mooi nakom en dinge reg doen, dit word weerspieël in
die boetes.
Samevatting
2014 was ‘n baie suksesvolle jaar vir Koshuishokkie. Baie dankie aan Vossie, elke komiteelid en ook
elke koshuisverteenwoordiger dat julle bygedra het tot nog ‘n gesonde jaar van Koshuishokkie.
Dankie ook vir die spelers wat elke wedstryd in goeie gees gespeel het, sonder julle en julle liefde vir
die sport is die klub niks. Ons hoop ons kan jaarliks groei en dat volgende jaar selfs n beter jaar sal
wees en dat die veranderinge wat saam met die jaar kom, tot beter wedstryde sal lei.
