2007 Champion Child

President’s Message
Mom gives daughter the gift of life, TWICE
Not only is 12-year old Kiran Grewal a smart and incredibly artistic little girl, her up
beat personality and matter of fact style are just a few of the qualities Kiran is admired
for – Bravery is something else Kiran has down to art.
Although Kiran was born a happy
and healthy child, at the young age
of nine she developed Wegener’s
granulomatosis, an
autoimmune
disease that quickly and severely
damaged her kidneys, dramatically
changing her life forever.
The disease progressed so fast, Kiran’s
kidneys were damaged within a month
and Kiran had to be put on dialysis for
kidney failure.
The doctors at the Children’s Hospital
had to work quickly to get Kiran
on the right treatment, but the
aggressive progression of Wegner’s
pushed the disease past the point of
return. Kiran undoubtedly needed a
kidney transplant.
Because Wegner’s is a multi-system
disorder, the doctors at the Children’s
Hospital had to monitor the disease
for months before they could go
ahead with the transplant. Kiran’s
treatments
included
peritoneal
dialysis, hemodialysis treatments, as
well as chemotherapy. Although the
chemotherapy treatments caused
her to lose her hair, Kiran sported
her new look comprised of an entirely
bald head proudly - She would say,
“What’s the big deal, I just don’t
have hair!”
mother was the perfect match! Kiran
and her mother bravely underwent
surgery in June 2006, after two long
years of treatments – they’ve been
smiling ever since!
Kiran’s bravery and positive attitude
made her the perfect candidate for
the 2007 Champion Child! She now
officially holds the title and honestly
and openly speaks of her illness and
the tough experiences she’s survived
through.

It’s no wonder we call this time
of year our busy season. With
the successful completion
of the Children’s Miracle
Radiothon in Winnipeg and
Brandon and our enormously
successful Annual Book
Market Sale at St. Vital Centre,
together with our 21st Annual
Teddy Bears’ Picnic which is
just around the corner, these
months mark a high point in
our fundraising activities.
Looking back to January, we started the year with another great
curling event, the BDO Classic Canadian Open which raised
over $140,000 for the Foundation. Incredible! Thank you to the
volunteers, event sponsors, and curling community for showing
how much they care about kids.
In February, we welcomed this year’s Champion Child, Kiran
Grewal to the Foundation. Over the next year she’ll serve as our
ambassador for the Children’s Hospital Foundation, representing
the 130,000 kids who visit Children’s Hospital each year. As
a mother, I know I would do anything for my children, and
Kiran’s mom did just that by giving her daughter the ultimate
gift – please read their touching story to find out more.
The HOT 103.1 and QX 104 Children’s Miracle Radiothon in
March was an emotional three days as families and children
expressed first hand why support to the Children’s Hospital is so
important. Radio listeners opened their hearts and pledged an
amazing $590,000 for the Foundation. The KX96 and 101.1 the
Farm Children’s Miracle Radiothon in Brandon was also a great
success and brought in nearly $40,000. Our sincerest thank you
to the families who share their stories and to our community of
donors, volunteers, and sponsors who make these radiothons so
special.
We look forward to seeing you at one of our many upcoming
events, especially the Teddy Bear’s Picnic in Assiniboine Park on
May 27! Bring your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, cousins…
We promise teddy bears young and old will have a good time,
rain or shine!
Through the support that the Children’s Hospital Foundation
receives from the community, especially our donors and those
who come out to our events, we continue to work to make a
world of difference in the lives of sick and injured children.
This summer as you spend quality time with your family,
friends, and children, take a moment to remember the kids at the
Children’s Hospital. Your support to the Foundation has made
life just a little bit easier for them and we thank you for that.
Sincerely,
Thank You Manitoba Lotteries Corporation
Fortunately for Kiran when it came
time for her kidney transplant, her
The Foundation received $100,000 for the purchase of a pediatric rescue ECLS (extracorporeal life support) equipment through Manitoba Lotteries
Corporation’s employee-driven charitable giving program ECHO (Employees Care by Helping Others). This incredible donation marked the culmination
of 18 months of fundraising activities.

Not just any picnic – it’s THE Picnic!
Mark your calendars for the 21st Annual
Teddy Bears’ Picnic on Sunday, May 27,
2007 at Assiniboine Park. Expect the best
in entertainment on the Shaw Main Stage
and don’t miss headliner, Little Bear as
he sings and dances his way into little
ones hearts. Superb Entertainments: The
Bubbleman will headline the CaBearet
Stage. With over 50 tents of activities and
important health and safety information
there will be no shortage of things to do
and see.
As one of Manitoba’s most anticipated
events, the Picnic marks the start of
summer season for many families. So
kids bring your injured teddy bears to the
Great-West Life, London Life and Canada
Life B*A*S*H* Tent (Bears Ambulatory
Surgical Hospital) and parents don’t
forget to bring hats, sunscreen, and rain
gear – because the bears will have a good
time rain or shine!

MICH Researcher to Study Obesity in Kids
obesity are startling – one in every four
children is considered overweight, and
childhood obesity has increased 300
percent in the last two decades.
Potato chips and canned pop have never
been considered part of a healthy diet,
but unhealthy snacks are not the only
cause of childhood obesity says Dr.
Jonathan McGavock, the newest addition
to the Manitoba Institute of Child
Health (MICH).
Dr. McGavock, born and raised in
Winnipeg, has been recruited to study
childhood obesity along with disease
prevention and physical activity. His
arrival is timely as current estimates on
The cause of childhood obesity is not
always cut and dry. McGavock explains,
“Although a poor diet certainly increases
the risk of becoming overweight,
several other factors are also involved,
including not enough physical activity,
too much time spent playing video
games and watching TV, as well as
genetic components.”
McGavock added that kids these days just
don’t like water, and more often than not
the replacement is juice, which has just as
much if not more calories and sugar than
soft drinks. All too often parents don’t
recognize that their child has a weight
problem, helping them to make healthier
food choices, “Once your child is obese, it
is very difficult to reverse the effects.”

Greg Loader, Co-Chair of the Organizing
Committee. “And I couldn’t be more
proud of the $140,000 that this year’s

If parents are concerned about their
child’s body weight, their risk for chronic
disease, or their level of inactivity,
a number of studies are currently
underway at Dr. McGavock’s lab in the
Manitoba Institute of Child Health that
may be of interest. Participants will be
screened for diabetes and high blood
pressure, and will have an opportunity
to participate in a supervised six-month
exercise training program.
Curling Event Declared a Resounding Success
Thank you for showing your support!
The Children’s Hospital Book Market, sponsored by Dufresne, held its Paperback Sale
this past February and the Annual Book Market Sale in April. Both were incredible
successes and raised $217,000 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation! Thank you
to everyone who purchased and donated books, and to all the volunteers who make
these sales possible!
Regarding exercise, McGavock will
attempt to determine how long a child’s
exercise period lasts and at what intensity.
He uses a device called an Accelero – it’s
worn on the child’s hip and measures at
what speed the hip moves, not simply the
number of steps the child is taking.
Tournament champs, Ben Hebert, Mark Kennedy, John Morris, and Kevin Martin,
celebrate their Grand Slam win.
The BDO Classic Canadian Open
returned to the MTS Centre for the third
year in a row January 24-28, 2007. The
Children’s Hospital Foundation, True
North Sports and Entertainment, and the
Asham World Curling Tour partnered to
bring world-class curling to Winnipeg
to the delight of nearly 40,000 fans who
attended the five-day event. All proceeds
support the special health care needs
of kids through the Children’s Hospital
Foundation.
Presented locally by Quintex Services Ltd,
the tournament’s excitement culminated
with a nail-biting final game that saw
Team Kevin Martin beat out Team Randy
Ferbey for $30,000 in winnings.
Along with top-notch men’s curling, this
event included the return of the sold-out
School of Rock, a curling clinic that gave
90 kids the chance to curl and learn from
pros like Brad Gushue, David Nedohin,
and Kerry Burtnyk.

. . . because children need us !
Thank you to the following groups and organizations for their generous donations to the
Foundation. Your support goes a long way in supporting the special health care needs of kids.
Kids Helping Kids
Not a month goes by that the Foundation does not get a visit from very generous kids who have taken the time to visit with us and
leave a gift for kids in hospital. From lemonade stand proceeds to giving away personal birthday presents, the Foundation feels very
lucky to be able to share these gifts with kids that need them most.

Children’s Miracle Radiothon Breaks Records-Thanks Manitoba
Once again, Manitobans helped
the Children’s Miracle Radiothon
raise a record-breaking $600,000 for
Children’s Hospital.
Broadcasting live from the playroom
in hospital, HOT 103’s Ace Burpee and
Chrissy Troy, and QX 104.1’s Caroline
Hunter and Ron Able spent three
days talking to patients, families and
medical professionals about what
makes Winnipeg Children’s Hospital
such a special place.

The Radiothon would not be possible
without the support of Standard Radio,
our corporate sponsors, volunteers,
hospital staff and most importantly,
the families who choose to share their
personal stories of hope and inspiration.
We thank you all.
The radio hosts and families did an
amazing job of demonstrating the
importance of supporting our cause.
Manitobans heard the message loud
and clear, and donated generously
throughout the event.
Thanks to that generosity, cuddly teddy
bears will be distributed to kids in
