As usual, UNCE Lyon County staff members are on the move
to serve Lyon County residents better. Rebecca Wellnitz has
joined our team as the Lyon County 4-H Program Manager.
Rebecca will be supervising our traditional 4-H programs
countywide. Rebecca brings new ideas and lots of energy to 4H and we are excited to have her on the team.
We have a number of new 4-H Clubs and Projects, including
Lego Robotics, Gardening, Horticulture, Cooking and Geocaching. We have also launched a 4-H Home-school program
and a new Youth Leadership council. Lyon County
Commissioners recognized October 2-8, 2011 as National 4-H
Week in Lyon County. In addition, Governor Sandoval
declared October 5th as National 4-H Science Day. Lyon
County 4-H program staff and local citizens will support youth
in conducting the National 4-H science experiment in various
locations in Lyon County.
You may have noticed that we installed a 16x32 foot hoop
house as part of our Youth 4 Health Bookworm program. We
will use the 100% grant funded hoop house and supplies to
teach youth and families healthy lifestyles through experiential
learning activities and the demonstration of food production
technology (including automated drip irrigation) and cultural
practices.
We have been working very hard to compete for external grant
funding to support a new Extension programs. UNCE faculty
recently received a Beginning Farmer and Rancher grant from
the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The grant funds
will be used to develop an outreach program to increase the
profitability and success of agricultural operations statewide.
Stay tuned for more exciting program news and developments.
Our goal is to deliver, through innovative outreach, reliable
science based information to improve the quality of life in
Lyon County.

Program Manager
Dear Leaders/Volunteers of Lyon County,
I’ve had the pleasure to meet a few of you either on the phone or in person, and each of
you should have already received a few of my emails. I look forward to getting to know you
even more, but I am the Lyon County 4-H Program Manager. I have taken Andrew Munk’s
chair and desk, but technically not his position.
I have two children; Taylor, my son, is a Freshman at WNC, and my daughter, Skyler, is a
sophomore at Smith Valley High School. Our kids have 10 years experience in 4-H and are
currently FFA members and show livestock under FFA. Our knowledge is from Kern
County, Ca. where we lived. Ken, my husband, showed swine most of his teenage years as a
4-H member growing up in Michigan. I was involved in 4-H and FFA as a teenager and
showed lambs. In fact, Rio-Del Norte is the 4-H club my father started which I was a
member, and our kids were members of that same club.
There are many diversified programs/projects available to kids in Lyon County. I mean, a Ski
Program? That was never offered in the 4-H programs of Southern/Central California! 4H is strong in this county. Each community has leaders who are passionate to share their
knowledge and whose hearts are for kids.
I am anticipating a great year with the youth of Lyon County!

and all the traditional rabbit & cavy show classes.
There were over 235 rabbits and 30 Guinea Pigs.
It was a great success again this year. Thank you to Gayle
Turk, all the parents, and volunteers that made it possible!
As one attendee said, “the Fernley show was the most
organized, fun, and stress free show she had been to!”
-Our congratulations to Gayle Turk!!

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
“Pack the Track”, September 9th, 2011
9:09am, Yerington High School Track
What is “Pack the Track?” For the third year,
Amanda Blaine, with support from her sister Cassandra
and her adoptive mother, Mary McCandless, has
spearheaded a FASD awareness event called “Pack
the Track” at Yerington High School on September 9,
which is National Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
Awareness Day. Students, school staff and
administrators, area officials, and many people and
groups from Yerington and the Lyon County area
gather at the school track at 9:09a.m. and walk
together in mutual recognition of FASD and in support
of those with FASD. As in years past, the Mayor of
Yerington showed support by signing a proclamation
declaring September 9th “Fetal Alcohol Spectrum
Disorders Day.” Mrs. Sandoval attended the FASD
walk to show her continued support, along with
program managers from the Cooperative Extension
Office, Lyon
County.

4-H Summer Camp -July 10th-16th,2011
4-H camping programs have a rich history of
providing educational programming to thousands
of youth annually through hands-on, experiential
learning. Every camp offers great adventure,
friendship and fun, and all seek to develop the
camper's Head, Heart, Hands and Health to make
him or her a better person. Nevada has been
involved in 4-H camping since the first 4-H camp
took place on the University of Nevada, Reno,
campus in 1930. For about 79 years in Nevada,
4-H camping has been a proven and effective
method of reaching, teaching, and involving youth
in leadership skills development.

Annual Financial Report Forms & Project
Completion Reports
2011 Citizenship Washington Focus Delegation
In order to prepare for the Annual Awards Ceremony,
and acknowledge Members for their hard work, UNCELyon County asks Leaders to complete and return a
Project Completion Report. These “Reports” have
been emailed to all of the leaders. If you still need one,
please contact our office.
In order for a 4-H Club to maintain its Chartered status,
and to comply with USDA and UNCE requirements,

webpage http://www.unce.unr.edu/4H/about/policies/.
This summer 14 youth and 4 chaperones attended

National 4-H Week!!
Youth from Citizen Washington Focus posing in front of the Iwo Jima Memorial.
October 2-8, 2011
On September 15th, during the County Commissioner board
meeting, all five of the Lyon County Commissioners
unanimously declared October 2-8 National 4-H week!
Recent findings from Tufts University's 4-H Study of Positive
Youth Development indicate that young people in 4-H are
three times more likely to contribute to their communities than
youth not participating in 4-H. Notably, the Tufts research
discovered that the structured learning, encouragement and
adult mentoring that 4-H'ers receive play a vital role in helping
them actively contribute to their communities. In Lyon
County, more than 500 4-H members and approximately 100
volunteers are involved in 4-H.
Way to go!!
2011 National 4-H Science Experiment!
During the month of October, 4-H staff will be conducting the
2011 National Science Experiment, “Wired for Wind” at local
4-H Open Houses throughout Lyon County. The 2011
National Science Experiment, Wired for Wind, will introduce
young people to the possibilities of using wind as a clean,
widely available, and low-cost source of renewable energy,
and allows them to build their own wind turbine!
Please join us at one of the scheduled open houses
mentioned above for this amazing science experience!!
