Since this issue primarily focuses upon the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line, we thought an interview with the company that produces those particular figures would be something of interest. Through the help of Ron Antonette and the public relations company Berkhemer, Kline, Golin, and Harris, we were able to schedule a conversation with Karl Aaronian of Playmates Toys; a man who has been overseeing the evolution of the Turtles series since his first day on the job. He is also in charge of marketing the Star Trek: The Next Generation line as well, a factor which continuously pops up during this interview. CT &V: Karl, I understand you just recently received a promotion? KA: Yes! CT&V: Vice President in charge of Marketing? KA: That's correct. CT &V: How long have you worked for Playmates? KA: Since the fall of '86. CT &V: So, you've been there since the acquisition of the Turtles line. KA: Right. I was'hired to work on the Turtles once they signed up the license. CT&V: Now how did the whole deal for the Turtles come about? KA: Well, there are numerous stories about this ... I wasn't here at the time they actually acquired [the license], but shortly after. Basically, the president of the company, Richard Saliss, had a past relationship, I believe, with the Matchbox and the Robotech license [via] the Turtles' licensing agent, Mark Freedman. CT &V: Of Surge Licensing? KA: Correct. They knew each other pretty well, and Mark came to him with CT&V Page 18 Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the Turtles license. At the time, Playmates was known for its doll and pre-school line. We'd gotten into the promotional end of the business with some of our animatronic dolls in the mid80s. The action figure category at that time had kind of run its course with the Transformers. G.!. Joe was still around, but Masters Of The Universe, Thundercats, all of the fantasy figure lines had run their courses, and so a lot of the major players kind of left it open at that point. Richard Saliss saw an opportunity for Playmates to get into the category without having to necessarily go "head to head" with the big boys, and all the budgets that that requires. [Sallis] also saw an opportunity to do something different in the action figure category, where everything up to that point had been very hard-edged, kind of dark and threatening, with the one exception probably being Ghostbusters. There was an opportunity to do the opposite end of the spectrum ... kind of light-hearted, kind of wacky, kind of fun. CT &V: And, something very unique in concept as well! KA: Yeah, and with Turtles, it seemed like it was a perfect opportunity to take that original concept from the comic book, which was really targeted more towards the teenager and young adult, and skew it down to a younger child. A lot of that was done through the cartoon show by using the whole story with a lot of kid humor (the "cowabungas" and all of that). CT & V: Basically, the comic book itself had a darker overtone than the cartoon show, which was very lighthearted. KA: I wouldn't say "darker", but I would say [that it was] definitely harder edged. Most of the elements that made it a success definitely were in the original comic book, which was the brotherhood, the teamwork of the four Turtles. They were younger, and were basically doing things that kids could relate to instead of maybe like a He-Man character who was [in his] mid-to-late twenties. These were teenagers, and they did a lot of things that a teenager would be into. The television show basically just took that [concept] and mined it for all it was worth, including adding the true "kid element." But, the basics, like the ninja action, the brotherhood, the teamwork and the classic mentor' character of Splinter... the bottom line is [that] visually there was something quite different going on there. CT&V: I'd certainly have to agree with that! KA: What's interesting is that when we first tried to sell it to our buyers, the reaction was very mediocre. We got kicked out of a couple of retailers. We went out on the road [in] late 1987 to sell the concept, and quite frankly, I was TALKIN'TURTLES Collectible Toys & Values flying back and updating my resume at that point! There was not an overwhelming response. It built [up] slowly; it was not an overnight success like a lot of people may think. That's definitely not the way it happened. The comic book was very popular, but more towards a cult-ish market; they were probably peaking at 100,000 copies of the book for every issue. especially for Turtles, is that it isn't the little features that Playmates adds to the characters that make them popular, and it's not the marketing that makes them popular, it's the characters themselves! The creators infused these guys with so much personality, and these. are such strong characters; not just the four Turtles, but Splinter and Shredder... that's what made this work. Otherwise they're just four green turtles. CT&V: And, I've got to say that at that time, and up to now, especially with all that's out on the market, for a black and white independent comic, that's considered to be a godsend! KA: They started a whole trend in the black and white market, no doubt about it, but for mass market, you still couldn't say that it was a phenomenon. CT & V: Ah, but for what they call direct sales, it was quite big! KA: Absolutely. And, it gave us a phenomenal concept, but the comic book sales also gave us an indication that there's something working here, something clicking with people. You like having that evidence that there's something going on here, that people are responding to [the concept]. CT & V: In the beginning, Playmates probably never imagined that Turtles would evolve into something as big as it has become. KA: Not a chance. If anybody ever goes into any action figure line with that in mind, I think they're kidding themselves. There's no way to predict a success of that magnitude. CT&V: Just how much control do Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the creators of the Turtles, have over the toy line, if any? KA: Well, from the standpoint of approval, they have total control, and have to see everything. From the standpoint of their input, it really depends. There's Kevin, Peter, and their staff of guys that work for Mirage Studios. When it comes to new nonTurtles characters or new non-Turtles mutants [in the Turtles series], they have a tremendous amount of input. When it comes to just different themes that are applied to Turtles, different mechanisms, vehicles, and action figures we give the Turtles, that normally comes out of Playmates. Peter Laird's first "Turtle" Playmates that make up the toy world of the Turtles. Are there characters that Playmates itself has created for the line? KA: Oh, sure. CT & V: Off the top of your head, could you name some? KA: Mutagen Man, Ace Duck, Muck Man, Pizza Face, and Chrome Dome just to name a few. CT & V: Have any of these appeared anywhere else, like on the cartoon show for example? KA: On and off, most of the secondary characters have appeared on the Turtles show. But really, the show itself is important just in terms of developing some of these characters, and that's what's really been interesting. I think what's true about most action figures, CT & V: One of the most noticeable thing about the Turtles line is that they're very finely detailed figures. You can take a Turtles figure and compare it to some others, and right off the bat, you can notice how much work and pride has gone into it. Much of this is due to the sculptors you have working on them. Could you tell me how many different sculptors you have working on this line? KA: Well, first of all, Playmates is kind of a unique operation [in which] we have no in-house sculptors ... CT & V: Everything is freeleance in that regard? KA: Everything's freelance. Now, there has been a few people working in-house on Turtles for the last few years, but no designers, no sculptors, or model makers in house. It's pretty much a unique setup. There's a couple guys [who] have sculpted probably 90% of all the Turtles figures, and as much as we're involved, I think the key to the Turtles is definitely the sculptors. I don't know how other toy companies work, per se, but if most CT&V: So, it's a combined effort of the creators, their staff, as well as April 0 'Neil with and without her "press" credentials CT&V Page 19 TALKIN'TURTLES Collectible Toys & Values heard that Playmates had the license for [Star Trek], 1 was floored. 1 figured that with all the work the company put into the Turtles line, once they got around to the Star Trek license we would all see something truly great. 1 wasn't wrong at all! KA: That's very nice to hear! I've always been a Trekker, so that was a fun line to work on! CT&V: This, of "The Freshlyjormed Foot Fiend!" course, is something we can cover more of at a later date toy companies give their sculptors three since our Star Trek feature issue is weeks, maybe four weeks, to finish a scheduled for later this year, and I've sculpture, you could probably add two to got a good amount of questions for you three additional weeks for Playmates. in that area. They're wonderful. CT&V: 1 think so. 1 collect them myself. They're fabulous! When 1 CT&V Page 20 Star Trek at a· later date, so let's get back on the main focus here, which is Turtles. KA: You got it! CT&V: Here's a stumper for you, Karl: Off the top of your head, how many different Turtles figures do you think you've produced? KA: That's a good question. You know, one day we actually did add them all up and I would have to say, off the top of my head, maybe 150. That's a big guess. We put over fifty new figures last year in . the catalog, and I'm looking in this year's catalog right now, where we have 77 ... Now I'd have to say over 200, because the last two years we did about 130. CT &V: And this is, of course, including all the many different variations on the Turtles themselves, and April, of course. KA: Yes, which has, of course, become a big part of it. CT &V: Well, why not? If it can work for Kenner, and their many different 5th Anniversary Leonardo Batman variations, it can work here, too! KA: Sure. That's been one of the keys to Turtles, too. With Batman, you have one very strong character and everybody else is fine, but not as strong a character as Batman. With Turtles, you instantly have four equally strong heroes. CT & V: And some strong supporting characters as well, such as April, Splinter... KA: ... and the bad dudes. CT & V: Last year marked the fifth anniversary of the Turtles toy line. How well, in terms of sales, was that TALKIN'TURTLES Collectible Toys & Values received? KA: Very well, I'd say. Two things we did to commemorate that occasion was [that] we first issued a special metalized figure on a base, which was a P.R. piece we sent out to the media, as well as our buyers. Then there was the actual Fifth Annivesary Turtle on the simulated wooden base that was the mass market item. CT &V: Those were all collector numbered as well, ifl recall correctly. That's another topic we'll have to discuss when we do that Star Trek- related interview- the special collector's edition numbering system. You would not believe how many readers have written us with regards to various situations they've encountered with the numbers of the ST:TNG figures. KA: From what standpoint? CT&V: Some readers mentioned that the figures that they acquired had no number at all ... KA: They'd better hang on to those! . ': . , this! If I could just continue on this line, Karl, one other reader mentioned being in possession of a figure with two numbers! One number on each foot! KA: Hmmm. I can't even figure out that one. That's ceratinly something rare. CT&V: It's even on a bilingual card as the buyer purchased it in Canada, I believe. KA: He's got something I Toon Turtle Raphael with his cycle sequential thing where as [the figure] comes off the line, the next number comes up and boom, they stamp it. With the accessories, however, it's a sticker on the box. CT&V: That's quite interesting. I was under the impression there was a sticker as well on the bottom of each of the figures' feet. So it would be quite conceivable for a figure or two or more to be missed by the stamping machine. KA: I'd say so. We didn't start off by CT&V: I certainly would! How are the numbers placed on the feet of the figures? not stamping them. Frankly, the only way [someone could] get one that wasn't stamped, is, number one, if somebody KA: The figures undergo a stamping , rubbed it off. But if it's in the package, the only other way I would think it could process [wherein] the numbers are have happened is where it was missed on stamped onto the feet as it comes off the the production line, which isn't production line. I don't know if it's a impossible, because there's still that machine stamping process or what, but I human element where they have to pick know it's basically ink. It's just a up the figure off the line and put it up to the stamper itself. The gutsiest gal to ever gather news! CT&V: I'd say you just helped to clear up a lot of g r e y areas wit h man y collectors who I hope are reading would say is valuable there! relatively CT & V: W ~II, enough of that. KA: Right... back to Turtles. CT &V: What figures in the Turtles line do you know of that were produced in lower numbers than others? Not all your figures have the same production numbers, do they? KA: That is correct. All four of the Turtles themselves [have the same production numbers], unless in rare cases like in the Turtle Games where the style of the Turtles would click a little more than some of the others. For instance, Leonardo in that group wasn't selling as well as some of the others. I can't really remember the actual numbers, but when it comes to non-Turtles figures, there's definitely a wide, wide variant. Leatherhead was really backed up with the original run; it was eventually phazed out of the line. This is not to say that he would not come back at some point. CT&V: That's good to hear, and something I was going to ask you about. The characters that have these seemingly lower production runs, the characters that collectors have a hell of a hard time locating, such as Leatherhead and Baxter Stockman for example, what good news can you give . us, if any, about them? KA: Well, Baxter Stockman just started shipping again, in limited quanities, about a month ago. What we are planning to do is taking some of the older characters, and over time, phaze them into the assortments for a limited time. There is a problem with your retailers, and rightfully so, that once a figure is phazed out they aren't particularly happy to see him come back into the line, but when CT&V Page 21 TALKIN'TURTLES we do it in limited quantities that's not a problem. And the collectors love it too, so ... CT & V: They love it up to a certain point just as long as there's a way to distinguish between the original and the later editions. KA: I know the collectors prefer some way to ... we have honestly become aware of the importance .of the collector's market, we should have always been aware of it, and we certainly are now, with Star Trek, but with Turtles, it won't be a problem actually because they're all on new green cards. CT&V: Okay, so that's the distinguishing mark then. Now, we have a question from one of our readers who would like to know if April O'Neil is really that popular a character that you have to make all these different figures of her? KA: Originally, she was almost a closeout figure the first year of the Turtles. She was another one that did not sell, but as the cartoon and the movie established itself, she has become one of the more popular characters. Basically you have the four Turtles who are the core of the line, but Shredder, Splinter, April, Bebop, Rocksteady, and the Foot Soldier are very strong second tier characters, and this is why you see so much of April O'Neil. She has proven to be a very strong figure with both the male and female segment of the Turtles market. She's always been an important character because basically she's the Turtles' liaison between our world and their world, and over time, she's really been built into being one of the more popular characters. CT &V: Many are dumbfounded as to how she can afford so much cosmetic surgery. KA: Because she wears the same outfit every time, that's why. She doesn't have a big wardrobe. CT&V: Oh, I don't know how true that is; she's had some outfit changes lately. Now since we're onto this subject, could you explain the problem that ensued with regard to the placement of the word "Press" on April's outfit which apparently caused some commotion? KA: Yeah, and you know what, it's been awhile now. It had nothing to do with that word being over her breast. That was really never an issue, I don't CT&V Page 22 Collectible Toys & Values even remember it being talked about. Could you refresh my memory ... did we add it later on or did we remove it later on? back to Star Trek really quick, that we are shipping some of our new '93 Star Trek figures with special Skybox collector cards? CT &V: I thought you removed it later on. KA: Well, mainly in those cases, it CT & V: I had heard something to that effect. KA: Well, they're just shipping out of would be more of a cost consideration more than anything else. the Orient now! CT&V: So, you're saying there was no truth to the claims that it was removed due to parents who were up in arms about the placement of the word? KA: Zero! Hey, I am a guy and so I do notice things like making sure that the products are not too tacky. For instance, sometimes you'll see some of these figures where a sculptor may have gotten carried away, and we will literally paint up the outfit to make sure that there's Eastman's first "Turtle" more coverage even though it doesn't follow the sculpture, per se. But, when it comes to that specific instance, that was never an issue. It was either a case where we were way over cost and the printing had to be eliminated, or that with this printing you need a relatively flat surface and that the surface was not lending itself to the printing and we were worried about the clarity and that we were actually able to achieve the printing over time. But, it never really had anything to do with the breast issue. CT & V: Do you plan on adding anything to the Turtles packaging in the way of a premium, such as a trading card or comic book insert? KA: It's one of those things that is not out of the realm of possibilities. It's one of those impact type of premiums that everybody loves. Did you know that, CT & V: That's very good news. When do you determine them to be here in the U.S.? KA: Retail: now. six to eight weeks from CT & V: Any idea what figures will make up this first new assortment? KA: There'll be variations of the main crew members. CT & V: The crew in their original uniforms you mean? KA: Exactly. CT & V: Well, it seems we keep coming back to Trek here, so here's a question that Ron Antonnette from the group that reps your company (Berkhemer, Kline, Golin, and Harris) wanted me to ask you, and that is, "Why does the figure of Riker have a torn uniform?" KA: Well, he's the angry young man. This guy gets into battles all the time, and we wanted just to rough him up a little bit. It happened over a battle for Romulan Ale or something, but basically it was to make him into more of an action-oriented action figure which is the way he is in in the show. The actor himself loved it; he was excited when he saw it. CT&V: Let's get back to those Turtles again, before they die from neglect! Which would you say is the top seller out of the four Turtles? KA: You know, there's never been a pattern. CT &V: Really? No preference at all, eh? KA: We always try to guess, but there's never been any obvious kind of sales pattern at all amongst the four Turtles at all. If we ever have to make a call on it, we'd say Leo (because he's the leader), we'd say Mike (because he's the party dude), but Raph gets a lot of great sarcastic lines because of the show. Usually we place Don last because he's the more scientifically-natured guy, and kids might not play with him as much, but overall, nobody stands out. Everything is pretty much equal. TALKIN'TURTLES Collectible Toys & Values CT &V: Before, we talked about Leatherhead, which you said was eventually phazed out of the line. Was this just due to him not being as popular a character? KA: It didn't sell. CT&V: Because it didn't sell, the figure is now one of the most collectible, in demand action figures to date. KA: That's true, and because they may not sell over a period of a couple months and they back up and basically you say, "that's enough, we're out of the Leatherhead business" but overall, the number of Leatherheads shipped is relatively small, versus some of the other characters that we shipped over two or three years. But he was not a popular character in the action figure line. CT & V: Why were changes in the Ray Fillet character made? KA:' That was another matter of costs. The color change was unbelieveably expensive. Given our, especially considering the competition, our low price point even in our basic Turtle figure assortment we found out that the cost of the color change was just way out of line. CT & V: I have a question again concerning the sculpting area, and that has to do with the turn around time per sculpture. How long would you say it takes one of your artists to complete a work? KA: You know, it's one of those things where we're using a couple of groups that sculpt the majority of the figures and they aren't working on anyone figure all at one time, so they do a little bit of work on one figure and go to the next, so something like that is a little hard to determine. My guess is, from the initial starting point, which, for them, is to build an armature and start the clay all the way throughout the final tooling pattern that we would send to the Orient for the tooling ... my guess would be about eight weeks. And that is a long time. If one person spent all their time on one figure it would probably end up being a few weeks, but I would say on the average it takes eight weeks. CT&V: It looks to me like we're nearing the end here, Karl, so perhaps maybe you could enlighten our readers with some information as to what you have planned for the line in '94 and beyond? KA: We se~ Turtles, as every toy company hopes,as a basic in the action figure catagory with or without continuing movies or cartoon shows. Turtles is very much a traditional action figure I ine with the basic good versus evil play but it's also a new kind of action figure line almost somewhat like a Trolls line where a lot of people, both kids and adults, are collecting the Turtles in their various guises. So it has that added element that I don't think any other action figure line has, which is that somewhat novelty element. And it's our job, of course, to continue to come out with good, exciting products to keep it fresh. And, I think you're going to be seeing a tremendous line for '94, a tremedously broad line. I mean this year, I think I mentioned we're introducing 77 new figures and we'll be just as agressive next year. CT &V: Being a big monster toy collector, I'm looking forward to the Universal Monster Turtles you have coming out this year, no doubt scheduled for a pre-October release. KA: Yep, that'll probably retail during September. And we're also coming out with, which I think are some of the more exciting things for this year, the Ninja Action Turtles, which I think are going to be phenomenal. Then a couple of the new Mutations Turtles such as the Road Ready Mutations, where they mutate from Turtles into vehicles. CT &V: And you have a Mutating April figure this year as well, don't you? KA: Yep, which actually I believe is shipping right now, so she should be here any day. CT & V: Alert the media! KA: Alert the media ... CT&V: ... April O'Neil has just left the building! KA: That one is going to be a surprising one, because seeing it mutate will be kind of interesting. And then for the action figure accessories, a really great one is the Ninja Grappler. CT &V: Ha, I saw that in action at the Toy Fair...I couldn't believe how fast that was! KA: That was an old Tomy item we picked up. I worked on that when I was at Tomy actually. It's probably the best action figure attack vehicle I've ever seen. It's dynamite. CT & V: Karl, I would like you to know that I truly appreciate you taking the time from your schedule to allow me the privelage of conducting this interview with you. Much success to you as well as Playmates. I look forward to talking with you again soon for our Star Trek issue. Thanks again. KA: You're welcome! The genesis of this multimillion dollar concept is about as plausible as the premise for The Beverly Hillbillies. But this is America, where someone . occasionally gets lucky "beyond . the dreams of avarice," and turns those rags to riches. The rest of us just keep struggling along at our mundane jobs such as, for instance, publishing a magazine. The artists certainly ~~.:-;. -"-.;-_ · ,~ t~ . _ _. . _ _ _ _ _. ._"'_ .t( . There are a few snags when it comes to collecting the Turtles. The first problem is that the early Turtle products (those produced before the 1988 Playmates licensed figures) are practically impossible to find because they are so scarce, and the recent licensed products are so numerous and were produced in such quantity that they have little investment value. You can find TMNT products in every toy store, drug store, and grocery store. You can't possibly collect all of them, even if you wanted to, so don't try. Look for .those things you like! This is always the smart way to collect because . others will probably like many of the same things . The Playmates TMNT line of figures is consistently attractive, well detailed, fun, and fairly cheap. The popUlarity of these figures is a phenomenon in itself, and there are many excellent collector values, but with over 200 figures COLLECTING TMNT Collectible Toys & Values ~~..~ i..¥ .-:-..,. ::.;....u··!" "C Type" package back produced and more coming every month, be selective. We have rewritten and revised our detailed examination of the early TMNT figures (published in issue #4) in order to give you as much guidance as possible. TMNT action figures are the most imaginative, best detailed and best equipped figures being produced. Early TMNT figures, now in very short supply, are good bets for collecting. Furthermore, the relatively scarce non-Turtle characters are much more likely to increase in value in the future. If you are interested in future value, don't open the blister pack! A figure out of the original package is worth only 25% of the value in our CT& V listing. In early 1990, Wingnut and Screwloose, Mondo Gecko, Muckman and Joe Eyeball, and Scwnbug were added. Their packages (Type D) depict 24 characters (April is back), plus the four Wacky Action Turtles at the top. These new figures were all produced in great quantity because by now the TMNT figures were very popular. The current figures date back to 1988, and the best collecting values will generally be in the earliest figures. The vintage of a TMNTcharacter can be determined from the package back. The earliest packages (Type A) depict ten characters (the four Turtles plus April O'Neil, Splinter, Bebop, Shredder, Foot Soldier & Rocksteady), and have a 1988 copyright date. We were able to obtain all of them in local stores in 1991 and early 1992, but they are scarce now. The original April figures are notoriously in short supply. Splinter, Bebop, and Rocksteady were reissued in 1990 packages, so the Type A package version is scarce. (All the package ''Types'' are CT& V's own notati on.) Later in 1990, three more Wacky Action figures were added, along with Panda Khan, Napoleon Bonafrog, Fugitoid, Mutagen Man, Slash, and Triceraton. Mutagen Man (and others) were released in packages (Type E) that have 7 Wacky action figures at the top, 4 in the first row & 3 in the second row. Slice 'n Dice Shredder, and Creepy Crawlin' Splinter come in large packages (Type W2) with 7 Wacky Action figures and are scarce, but most of the other characters are still plentiful in locations that have any older figures. Still later in 1990, Mike the Sewer Surfer, Leo the Sewer Samurai, Don the Undercover Agent, Ray Fillet, Donatello with Storage Shell, Raph the Space Cadet, and Pizzaface were introduced. The four Turtles in this batch were shipped in exceptionally large quantities, and are the ones most frequently discounted. Several of the early The first additions to the line were Ace Duck, Genghis Frog, Baxter Stockman, and Krang. These figures were produced for several years in their original packages (Type B), which have 14 characters depicted and are t1~) ~~;;'" dated 1989. You can probably . . ~~~::.,,»... find some of them even today. ~~< ~ Never mind the earliest TMNT figures that came with the ''Turtle Force" fan club flyer, as they are already in the hands of collectors and you can't find them in any store. (You will have to go to a show or a dealer if you want any of these figures, and even then, we don't see many of them at shows.) It would be a lot cheaper to go to the local toy store, and start a collection of the current Playmates line of figures. If you are going to collect TMNT figures, you should first look for characters in the toy stores, and, if not found there, then consider paying that extra dollar to a dealer. This article is designed to help you by informing you of the availability or scarcity of these figures. Figures of the four Turtles are much more plentiful than the other characters, so don't pay a premium price for them. The next additions were Casey Jones, Usagi Yojimbo, Metalhead, Leatherhead, General Traag, and Rat King. Their packages (Type C) have 19 characters (April is omitted) and ".~~.illlI.Ili;.~=_~~.;~~. are dated 1989. We have never .. located a Leatherhead figure, primarily because none were distributed in 1992 (even though the figure was included in the Playmates 1992 catalog along with the others listed above). The first "Wacky Action" turtles were introduced in late 1989 in bigger packages (Type W 1) that have four figures at the top. The Wacky Walkin' Mouser is by far the scarcest, but the others can occasionally be found. Package back of a "Dl type" CT&V Page 25 COLLECTING TMNT Collectible Toys & Values of Machine Gunnin' Rocksteady, and Headspinnin' Bebop. They, along with the Headdroppin' Turtles, come in the larger size package. Similarly packaged are the four Talkin' Turtles. The types of figures that come in the larger packages generally cost about $1.50 more than the regular figures. Most of the figures in the larger package lines (Wacky Action, Head Droppin', Talkin', etc.) are Turtles and were quite common on the toy store racks for a long time since they were 'produced in huge quantity. However, the non-Turtle figures: Slice 'N Dice Shredder, Creepy Crawlin' Splinter, Machine Gunnin' Rocksteady, and Headspinnin' Bebop (all "Wacky Action" figures) are fairly scarce, and may prove to be a good investment. "F type" package back characters were reissued in 1990 packages, and these versions are fairly common (except for April). The seven Wacky Action figures are depicted at the top of these packages (Type F), two in the first row and 5 in the second. Ray Fillet is notoriously hard to find. Keep looking for the earlier packs, as these are the best investment. Many ''Type F' packages say "NEW!" on the left side. In 1991 and early 1992, even a casual inspection of a rack of TMNT figures in a toy store revealed how plentiful figures in these packages were. During the same period, Ray Fillet went through several figure and package changes as the original color-changing version was hard to produce. The earliest package says "A wesome Mutant Color Change," and is the one to get, but all versions are collectible. In 1992, all new releases were produced in large quantities and are easy to obtain with a little looking. A particular figure may be hard to locate, but this is primarily due to the over 200 different figures produced to date. 1993 continues this pattern, and we don't think any of the recent figures will ever be scarce, except perhaps for the Mutatin' (non-Turtle) figures. However, there are some new items worthy of collector interest. A few of the vehicles, such as the Channel 6 News Van, the Movie III warhorses, and the Cave Turtles now come with special edition figures. These are more expensive items, and are not produced in anything I ike the massive quantity of regular figures. The most recent is a "pizza back" with all of the figures on their own pepperoni slice. Many early figures (and 1992 figures) have been re-released on these packages. Late 199o/early 1991, additions to the TMNT line were the four Turtles with "Storage Shells," Walkabout, Wynn, Groundchuck, Dirtbag, and Chrome Dome. These come in a package (Type G) with Walkabout as the first listed figure. Tattoo was also added at this time in a package (Type G 1) that lists him first.
