We harvested a crop of radishes two weeks ago and are thrilled with how things are going in the garden. The peas are in flower, the runner beans are happily climbing the poles and the root vegetables are coming on steadily. Year 5 have enjoyed this as you can tell by some of the quotes below. Maya said “I enjoyed ‘digging for victory’ as they did in World War II because I never do much gardening. I learned a lot!” Kouji added “I enjoyed ‘digging for victory’. It was hard but that told us how wartime people survive. I learned a lot and I am happy that our vegetables grew. I have now started my own vegetable patch at home.” Cassius said “‘Digging for victory’ was a pleasure. It was fun to dig and I found out new things.” /TFi Reculver Primary School’s Visit On Thursday 30th June, Reculver Primary School’s Year 6 pupils came to visit us. At the end of the year they have been preparing a presentation about antibullying, and last Thursday, they presented it to our Year 6 pupils. Their presentation was very powerful and they sang a song to us (which they had made). It was really nice and reflected on antibullying. After that we enjoy playing sports with them. Then it was time for them to go, we thanked them a lot for coming as we waved goodbye. It was, overall, a really good and pleasant afternoon for the Year 6 pupils. /Zoé, 6M The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 377 7 July 2016 Egham Regatta There has been an encouraging growth in the numbers of Year 7 rowers this term and the girls’ squad, many of whom have now been learning since September, have made particularly good progress. In the light of this it was felt that they were ready to enter their first competition. Opportunities at this age group are limited but, luckily, the Egham Regatta offered J13B racing. This meant that the opposition would be one year older but we hoped that our skill might be a match for greater physical size and strength. It was a difficult choice to pick four from a squad of six keen and talented girls (Alex Jeffery, Izzy Sugden, Milly Hollaway, Rebecca Hiller, Ruth Metcalf and Arwen Benefield-Chopra). Unfortunately Ruth and Arwen missed out on this occasion but there will be further opportunities for the whole squad next year. We were drawn against Henley Rowing Club – a major force in girls’ competitions, so we understood that the main aim of the day was simply to get down the course, to have fun and to see how a regatta was organized. Hopefully all this would give a taste for more racing in the future. The venue, on the Thames at Runnymede, was perfect for a first experience. There was plenty of space, the river was not too busy and the marshalling was patient and clear. Above all, the staff and pupils from our senior school were fabulously supportive – helping to get the boat on the water and gathering on the bank to join with our parents in cheering our progress. We did not beat Henley but we had an exciting day and our rowing was smooth and confident. The pictures show just how accomplished our timing has become – a real credit to Miss Sharp’s coaching. Mention should also be made of Matthew Bawtree, who stepped in at the last minute to a J13 singles race after a KSC pupil was unable to attend. He joined the main squad in their 6.30 departure and had already competed by the time that we were leaving school at a more civilized hour for a Sunday morning. Matthew, too, was drawn against an athlete from Henley but gave him a difficult and close race, coming second by under a boat length. Congratulations to everyone who took part and thank you to them also for making the day so enjoyable. I am particularly grateful to the parents for their support and to Miss Sharp for rearranging her weekend duties so that she could be with her girls. Hockey Matches at Polo Farm James Oates (OJKS) is Captaining the England U18's against the Belgian U18's at Polo Farm this weekend. This would be a fabulous opportunity for those girls and boys interested in playing hockey and progressing through the Single System to see what level they need to work to. If you are interested in going to watch some of these matches, match times are as follows: On both Friday 8th & Saturday 9th July the U18’s are playing at 3pm, followed by the U16’s at 5pm. On Sunday 10th July at 9:30am the U18’s will be playing and the U16’s at 11am. Please do go along if you are able to. We were joined by artist Cathy Tutton to help us create some amazing artwork to celebrate the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio. We hope you had a chance to view some of our work on Speech Day! They used our newly created trail, which has been used by our own pupils, with a particular focus on insects. Using sweep-nets, pitfall traps, jars and hand lenses, their Year 1 & 2 pupils had a great time exploring our amazing grounds and were buzzing by the end of the afternoon! /CL The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 377 7 July 2016 Year 5 Milner Challenge The rain poured, the sun shone and the mud squelched! Year 5 was undeterred as every pupil completed the challenge of rowing 5 miles in a canoe and hiking 5 miles back. Despite aching limbs and sore feet, the sense of achievement was palpable as I welcomed the children back to school. It was just what the Milner Challenge is all about: pushing pupils outside their comfort zone, achieving a personal challenge and getting that huge sense of satisfaction in completing it. Well done Year 5, you should all feel extremely proud of what you achieved. /CP The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 377 7 July 2016 From the Drama Department Many congratulations to the fabulous Year 3 pupils who were so entertaining in their play last Tuesday. Using some traditional Greek stories and characters the children breathed new life into the familiar. What was especially lovely to see was how much they enjoyed themselves. The performance showed such a lot of creativity and confidence and the children achieved a lot in a short time. Many thanks to parents who provided the delightful costumes, and to the ever supportive staff of Junior House. We thought travelling by ship sounded exciting, so we made our own junk boat models. We had to make them waterproof and discussed the different materials and design that might help them float. We tested them to evaluate whether they could be improved further, adding stabilisers and even propellers. Year 2 children have been getting excited about the prospect of the Olympics in Rio in the last few weeks. We have been learning about the different sports and different countries involved. To help us get in the carnival mood, we designed T-shirts to celebrate The Games and plan to wear them proudly as we enjoy our own carnival next week. Wish us all good luck as we leave Pre-Prep at the end of term and look forward to an exciting start to our Year 3 and Key Stage II learning in September! The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — Congratulations to Mustard and his human, Romilly. Together, they entered a dog show last weekend and won third place. Here they are sporting their rosette. Great teamwork! : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 377 7 July 2016 Our trip to Japan ended this week with a celebration of kite-flying. The weather was perfect. Aren’t they colourful! It has been very interesting to learn that different countries enjoy so many different traditions that we can all share. We have found Japan a very exciting country to ‘visit’. In Blossoms this week, we have been revising our learning this term. We concentrated on numbers and letters. We built brick castles, counting the number of bricks that we used and trying to add up as we went along. We also spent time reading some of the books we read earlier this term, attempting to read to one-another and carefully spelling out some of the more difficult words. Pre-Prep Notice Board Following our International Food Tasting Day, we are still looking after a charming plate with flowers and blue dots on it. If it belongs to you, please let us know and we will ensure its safe return. This is the last Mini Week for the year and we would all like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a restful summer holiday with lots of fun and laughter. We look forward to hearing about what you have been doing when we see you all again on Wednesday 7th September. Happy holiday!
