The Week Issue 367 - Junior King`s School
No. 367 The weekly newsletter for The Junior King’s School, Canterbury 18 March 2016 From the Headmaster What an amazing final week of term we have enjoyed. Each day has brought special events and opportunities for children to show their skills, whether it be in Maths, Music, Swimming or Drama. This newsletter gives just a small glimpse of the amazing Lion King production which was one of the best drama performances I can remember at Junior King’s – well done to all those involved! Our celebratory assembly this morning brought together the many and varied themes of the term with a host of cups, colours, prizes and certificates presented. The Macaws House won the Parrot which now proudly displays the green ribbon. This is always a keenly contested trophy wrapping together house points from work, games, house matches, stars etc. Congratulations to all the boys and girls who received awards for effort and high-quality work of different kinds. The Lion King Jr It is hard to put into my own words how spectacular the Lion King Jr was, but some words that have come my way have been ‘fabulous’, ‘the best yet’, ‘joyous’, ‘beautiful’, ‘magnificent’, ‘stupendous’ and most often: WOW!…………. The most common comment has been that it was hard to believe that these were primary aged children, and it’s easy to see where that comment comes from. I feel it is so important to trust that children can achieve astonishing things, to be ambitious, because look what can happen! The songs, the dances, the acting and the camaraderie were simply stunning to behold. It is hard to single out individual performances as this show was such a success simply because every child played their part to the best of their ability, and many beyond what we could imagine or expect. Term ended with our Easter presentation from the Chaplain and the choir sang a beautiful anthem to conclude a truly memorable term. I am rather hoping that the Pre-Prep have not discovered all the colourful Easter Eggs hidden in my garden – they certainly had an exciting hunt this morning! My best wishes for a very Happy Easter and a successful skiing trip to those departing for Valloire this evening. Continued on page 2. So many staff and parents mentioned names to me of children that they were impressed with but those who really stood out for many were Freya (Scar) and Bear (Mufasa). With children aged 9 and 10, these were always going to be the hardest parts to cast, but these two transcended their age to produce mature, skilful performances. I think George Asprey who plays Scar in the West End needs to watch his back because Freya’s ambition and determination is impressive, and Bear’s richness of voice promises some powerful performances in the future (a comparison to Jeremy Irons was made in the staff room). Joy and Sebbie were a delight as the comic duo of Timon and Pumbaa, and their timing was fantastic, never missing or riding over the opportunity to get a laugh. Our two Simbas (Theo and Freddie) produced some truly soaring vocals in Hakuna Matata and the beautiful Shadowlands from Hannah as Nala left more than a few teary eyed. Abigail is to be commended for her powerful singing – impressive in a 9 year old, and her articulate confidence on Chris Evans’ Breakfast show was fantastic. Libby’s ‘double event’ of both playing Zazu and communicating through a puppet was beautifully controlled and skilful, and her characterisation was so precise and well voiced. The angular twitching of Zoe and Edwin and their excellent interplay enriched their superb characterisation of Banzai and Shenzi, and we all enjoyed Kitty’s manic giggle as Ed. Theo and Annabel bought such youthful energy to the roles of young Simba and Nala, especially in I Just Can’t wait to be King. Theo and Bear in particular did a fantastic job of creating a convincing father/son relationship early in the play. Naomi and Rebecca as Sarabi and Sarafina adding real grace and presence to their leadership of the lionesses. Congratulations to the lead ensemble who worked so hard in rehearsals and the shows, often dashing from one place to another, changing costume and still managing to be in the right place at the right time without any prompting. And to the wall of sound created by the choir who provided a really strong backbone to the whole production as well as filling the stage with energised movement in their dance routines. This kind of production defines us as a school, as a community. There has been such joy and energy within school this week and the buzz in the staff room following the performances has been wonderful to experience. As staff we are so proud, and want to thank the children for this marvellous spectacle. It has lifted our souls in time for a well deserved Easter break. Have a great holiday from the most delighted and proud Head of Drama in the world! Mrs Öbo More photos can be found at the end of this week’s edition of The Week. The Junior House Swimming Gala was a lively event and the children all swam brilliantly. The Cockas were the winning team with Kakas following closely behind. We were fortunate to watch the Lion King on Wednesday, which was a wonderful experience. It was great to see the Middle School children performing so confidently and showcasing their talents. Thursday’s Maths Challenge was a closely fought contest. The children were in house teams and answered a series of number problems. It was good to see the children working together so well. We finished the week with Easter Egg bingo in our forms and send a huge thank you to the Friends of Junior King’s for providing the eggs. In Junior House assembly Mrs Outram’s dance troupe strutted their stuff and wowed us with their moves. We heard Philippa play a lovely tune on the flute and awarded Sapphire certificates to Enoch, Sam T and Oscar. Stars of the Week were given to: Anias, Alex, Zara, Lily and Hannah. The activity choices for next term should have reached you via email. Please select activities very soon so that I can sort out the lists for next term. I wish you all a wonderful Easter break and look forward to seeing you on 19th April. /LAW Sports Results Saturday 12th March Netball U13A v St Lawrence Junior King’s won 17 - 5 Player of the Match: The Whole Team U13B v St Lawrence Junior King’s won 20 - 10 Player of the Match: The Whole Team U13C v St Lawrence Junior King’s won 12 - 3 Player of the Match: The Whole Team U13D v St Lawrence Junior King’s won 4 - 3 Player of the Match: Ava Samoilys & Missy Chapman U13E v St Lawrence Junior King’s won 7 - 4 Player of the Match: Netania Awara U11A v IAPS National Netball Finals Played 9, Won 4, Lost 5 Player of the Match: The Whole Team U11B v Wellesley House Tournament Junior King’s came 3rd Player of the Match: The Whole Team Boys’ Hockey 1st XI v St Lawrence St Lawrence won 4 - 3 Player of the Match: Will Allen 3rd XI v St Lawrence St Lawrence won 6 - 0 Player of the Match: Ehioze Osifo & Zeli Ashebhai 4th XI v St Lawrence Junior King’s won 1 - 0 Player of the Match: Ben Cook Colts A v Duke of York’s Duke of York’s won 2 - 1 Player of the Match: The Whole Team Colts B v Duke of York’s Duke of York’s won 1 - 0 Player of the Match: The Whole Team 2nd XI v St Lawrence St Lawrence won 6 - 1 Player of the Match: Joe Gotts The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 367 18 March 2016 From the Drama Department Last Friday after The Week had already gone out we were treated to the most amazing performances from Annabel Kearsey, Freya Hollaway and Lily Cochrane. All three girls have been working incredibly hard for this year towards their Performance Certificate exams that involve them putting on a solo show of 15-20 minutes according to grade. This is an extraordinary task for ones so young, and all three girls did exams that are intended for children at least 3 years older than their current ages. The examiner was incredibly impressed, her first words to me after the exam was ‘that was extraordinary’. Some of her comments are conveyed to you here: About Freya: ‘you worked confidently and spontaneously… overall this was accomplished, funny and deeply moving’ About Annabel: ‘you were profoundly truthful and personally involved… heartfelt nuanced work’ A Huge Thank you To everyone who donated at the end of both shows of The Lion Jr. We made a total of £661 thanks to your generosity and this will go towards further drama productions in the future. This amount of money will finance a complete set of costumes for the next big show that we produce, so thank you very much indeed. About Lily: ‘you moved with grace and clarity…overall this was a creative and original piece of work which flowed seamlessly and conveyed the quality of the original work’ We are all so incredibly proud of the girls and the evening was such a joyful celebration of what a bit of hard work and imagination can achieve! The talk was mainly about trying to understand the daunting issue that faces the UK & the rest of Europe currently, that issue being the refugee crisis. James had experience on this subject due to his recent work with the refugees. What James does is that he talks to the refugees and cares for them. He also talks to people in prisons, mainly political prisoners in the Middle East. James provided us with plenty of food for thought as he delved into the topic making it understandable and accessible for all. He did this by providing examples of some of his experience and a simple snapshot of what he does. He was quick to point out that the job doesn't bring any danger; especially with his mother in the room! To conclude, James gave an interesting and engaging talk that had us thinking for the rest of the day. It was also very nice seeing someone from the King's system grow up and do something so interesting and inspirational. Thank you James! /C Taylor, 8SK : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 367 18 March 2016 From the Upper School From the Middle School And so another busy term draws to a close. We would like to begin by saying well done to a number of people. Firstly, well done from the Upper School to the Middle School on a fantastic production of The Lion King. We were fortunate to be able to see it on Wednesday morning, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Secondly, well done to this half term’s team of monitors, who have carried out their duties efficiently and with a mature attitude; we are most grateful. Finally, well done to everyone for an exciting Swimming Gala and an equally exciting Maths Challenge. Unbelievably we have reached the end of another term. It is not often that I am lost for words or am stuck finding superlatives but I am when it comes to describing the performances of the Lion King. Standing ovations and emotional mothers, and fathers, were created as the Middle School combined as a whole to produce one of the most stunning shows I have ever seen. There were individual performances that were remarkable for their quality and maturity; too many to mention and too amazing to forget. But, for me, it was also the colourfulness of the costumes and make-up, the amazing design of the Set and, above all, the energy and enthusiasm of the entire cast that lifted the show to another level. It is something that will live long in the memory and I would like to really congratulate all involved, and especially May we remind you that the deadline for payments for the Bude trip is today; if you have not yet completed that transaction, please do so as soon as possible. The ski trip departs this evening, and we wish everyone a really enjoyable trip. You can keep up to date with how it is going on our blog, the address of which will be posted on Twitter. Finally, we wish everyone a relaxing and restful holiday. Year 8 pupils need to use the next four weeks wisely, getting the balance right between rest and revision. Their reports contain some important advice, and we trust they will take that on board. thank Dr Rowcroft and Mrs Öbo. This week has also been busy with whole school house events and I would like to congratulate all the Middle School pupils for some very exciting competitions. The Middle School swimming gala was a tremendous success and congratulations to Cockas for their triumph. There are some really talented swimmers and the closeness of many of the events kept everyone enthralled, despite the heat! The Maths Challenge also gave an opportunity for everyone to be involved and was greatly enjoyed by all. Kakas ‘1’ were the winning team but Keas were the overall Middle School champions. I do hope that everyone has a really good holiday and a chance to recharge their batteries because, before we know it, the cricket, tennis and rounders seasons will have started! /IDM & CP From the Recording Studio On Saturday the Year 4 Saturday Activity Group went to a recording studio and 'cut' a CD! We recorded poems, musical instruments and songs. We felt like real stars! We look forward to seeing you all at the start of the summer term. /ASK & ST The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 367 18 March 2016 12th - 13th March It is hard to believe that 10 weeks have flown by and the end of the Lent term is upon us. It has been a very successful term in the respective boarding houses. There have been so many fantastic moments, achievements and loads of fun this term. We were all very proud of our Middle School Boarders this week. They have all worked so hard during the last few weeks to put on the spectacular performance of The Lion King. It was lovely to see the beautiful costumes, fantastic singing, dancing and acting and above all, the huge sense of achievement at doing something so well. We have also had the Inter-House Swimming Galas this week where pupils of all abilities put away their fears about swimming and tried their best for their respective houses. Lots of singing, shouting and cheering helped the various pupils in their houses to try their best. The Inter-House Maths Competition also took place this week. Pupils worked hard The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 367 18 March 2016 in groups to solve the puzzles. The senior Keas team who were mainly made up of boarders finished all the questions and earned their House extra bonus points. This is something that rarely happens so congratulations to them all. The last weekend’s activity was run by ‘Revolution Skatepark’. The company brought in scooters and skateboards and a variety of ramps so the boarders could jump and ride them. Lots of fun was had by all even though it was very cold. The Year 8 boarders spent Sunday afternoon in Canterbury on City leave and enjoyed having some time to themselves. The Year 8’s have all received their reports and marks from the Mock Examinations. It is very important that each Year 8 reads their report carefully and uses some of the Easter holiday to revise. The Common Entrance exams start on Monday 6th June which is the Monday immediately after the half term break. On behalf of all the boys and you as parents, we would like to thank all the staff who have made this term such a successful one. The Matrons, the Boarding Tutors and Assistant Tutors have all put in a tremendous amount of time and energy to make the Boarding Houses as comfortable, friendly and fun as possible. Mrs Tugwell and I thank all of them for their efforts this term. I hope that you will all have a lovely break and enjoy being with family, friends and guardians. A very Happy Easter to you all from all of us in Juckes and Kipling! The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 367 Helping Hands has been our topic for Earth Week in Blossoms. We have learned what we can do with our hands to help save the Earth: we know we must be kind to animals, plants and trees, as well as to our friends; we have learned about the things we use at home that can be recycled and now we will always clean our teeth with the tap turned off! We also found out that bugs are 18 March 2016 good for the planet. We gently captured some and studied them under a magnifying glass. Thanks to the generous donation by parents of recyclable rubbish, we have been busy in Willows turning it into our magnificent Rainbow Dragon. He is a friendly and wise dragon and has been teaching us about the importance of recycling. We joined his army of Litter Bugs, working hard to clear our world of unwanted litter and make it a better place for us to live in. French & Dance Spectacular! Les Trois Petit Cochons et Le Petit Chaperon Rouge. Welcome to our Year 2 French & Dance Spectacular! We entertained our parents this week by telling our own versions of The 3 Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood in French. Complimented by dance routines, the stories brought our learning to life on stage. Thank you Madame Sinclair and Miss Victoria for your help in making our performance truly spectacular! The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 367 18 March 2016 One of the highlights of Earth Week for us all has been an excellent drama workshop. We learned how to be superheroes, shooting flowers from our fingertips and partying when Bad Bopper wasn’t looking. Bad Bopper wasn’t kind to our planet. He drove his monster truck, polluting the air, he has his all day and all night discos, flashing lights wasting Party Land’s electricity, drops litter on the floor and he has chopped down all the plants in Party Land to make way for his disco! We persuaded him with our planet-saving super powers to think about what he was doing and that soon we wouldn’t have a world to live in if we didn’t take care of it. It took a lot of hard work, but eventually he agreed to join us and the World became a better place. Here are Year 1 children learning how to use their super powers. We enjoyed Earth Week indoors and outside in Year 2. We celebrated our last lesson in the Forest School with Mr Martin, who showed us how to use a drill to complete our forest tree bug sculptures. We worked together to build a fire, then toasted marshmallows and remembered our brilliant Forest School learning this term. We also combined Saint Patrick’s Day with Earth Week! We built leprechaun traps out of recycled materials. The traps had to be green and sparkly to entice the mischievous leprechauns. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to catch a leprechaun, but they did leave us a letter and some gold! Our final Earth Week celebration was a fantastic trip to the Natural Pathways in Walderchain Woods, where we made debris shelters, foraged for food, cooked and ate it, too! Pre-Prep Notice Board Mrs Evans, Conrad’s Mummy, will be running the London Marathon on 24th April. She is raising money for Cancer Research UK and would be so pleased if you could sponsor her challenge. You can find her web page at: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/pennyevans Have a very happy Easter break and we look forward to seeing you all again on Tuesday 19th April.
