The Week Issue 365 - Junior King`s School
No. 365 The weekly newsletter for The Junior King’s School, Canterbury 4 March 2016 Sporting Triumphs & World Book Day Congratulations to the U11A Netball Team who won their pool at the Regional IAPS Championships and qualified for the National Championships next week. Congratulations also to the Boys’ U9A Hockey team who won the Ashford Tournament this week. Junior House have been holding Book Week this week and for World Book Day they dressed up as their favourite character. Can you guess who they are? From the Headmaster The Junior House children and staff look splendid in their imaginative book character costumes celebrating World Book Day yesterday and today’s non-uniform day gave a more relaxed feel as we approached the second exeat. Well done to the U9 Boys’ Hockey Team who won the Ashford Tournament and to our U11 Girls who played superb netball to reach the National Finals this week. It has been a big week for the school as we have been seeing candidates on interview for the Deputy Heads and Maths posts. Our Heads of Department have also enjoyed being hosted to dinner at St Augustine’s by Mr and Mrs Roberts and their counterparts at senior King’s. I have some spare tickets for the very exciting Choral Concert at King’s tomorrow night and wondered whether any of our families might be interested. Mass in Blue by Will Todd takes place in the Shirley Hall tomorrow evening at 19:30. Any parents who might like to attend are most welcome as my guests. Do call Jenny McLeod in the Music Department at King’s on 01227 595523 if you would like to attend. Have a great exeat weekend! The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 365 4 March 2016 From the Fencing Piste On Sunday 28th February our under 13 Fencing Team, comprising of Constantin, Ethan, Felix and Roman, finished 6th at the British Schools’ Teams’ Championships, which took place at Brunel University. There were over 175 teams competing over the weekend, with 15 of the top schools in the U13 event. This is an excellent debut performance from the boys and follows medal winning performances in the older age groups from the senior school on Saturday with a former Junior King’s pupil captaining the U15 team to a Silver Medal. The next and last event of the term is the British Public Schools’ Championships at Crystal Palace on Tuesday 15th March. With over 2000 younger fencers competing over 3 days, this is one of the biggest youth Fencing events in Europe and will provide a great opportunity for some additional experience as we look towards the IAPS Fencing Championships in the summer term at Millfield. /Jamie Miller Marathon Runner Our very own Assistant Tutor, Señor Castro-Cepas will be running in the London Marathon this year. The race is on the 24th April and he will be raising money for Phab Kids. Phab is a national charity dedicated to promoting and encouraging the coming together, on equal terms, of disabled and nondisabled people to achieve an integrated and inclusive society. Congratulations to Ilinca who entered a 50m Slalom Ski Race while in Obertauern, Austria during February half-term. She came 3rd out of 20 with a time of 20.12'(sec). For more information on this worthwhile cause please visit their website at www.phab.org.uk. To donate to Mr Castro, visit www.justgiving.co.uk/jfcastrocepas. Thank you. Well done Ilinca! In 1st place is Sienna with her question “Do you feel closer to God in Space?” 2nd place goes to Artemiy with “If you get injured in space what do you do?” In joint 3rd place are William with “Does zero gravity affect comfortable living?” and Phillipa with “When you are asleep in space do you Dream? And if so are your dreams different to those you have normally?” The link up is looking likely to be one of the Saturdays near the beginning of the Summer term. We are also invited to a radio buildathon on the Friday before and I am looking for four Upper School pupils to represent the school – no experience necessary. Please let me know by the end of term. /ABT From the Upper School It is hard to believe we are already half way through this half term. Life has been as busy as ever, and we are all grateful for the breathing space that exeat will provide. There are still two more packed weeks to come before the Easter holidays, and it is vital that all of us (teachers as well as pupils!) are organised. Well done to the U13A boys’ hockey team who reached the semi-finals of the Dulwich tournament last week, and good luck to the U13A girls’ hockey team who will be representing Kent at the Regional In2Hockey Finals on Wednesday. Next week there is an Informal Concert at 6.15 on Tuesday in the Recital Room, and on Thursday there is an Ensembles Concert at 6.15 in The Barn; as always, all are welcome to both of these evenings. Please put the date of the Upper School Swimming Gala in your diaries: 1.30pm on Wednesday 16th March at The King’s Recreation Centre. We look forward to seeing as many parents as possible there; it is always an exciting occasion. Finally, there are still some passports required for the ski trip; please send these in as a matter of urgency on Monday. /ASK & ST From the Middle School It has been a busy week for everybody and it really seems to have flown past. The rehearsals for the Lion King have started in earnest and the show is really starting to take shape. All parents, of the cast, should have received emails about costume requirements. You will also have had an email from Miss ScottKilvert about tickets. I do urge everybody to try and come and see what is going to be an amazing and vibrant show. It has been another busy week of sport with some excellent performances. The Under 11A netballers played at the IAPS qualifier at Felsted School on Thursday. It was a very busy and tiring day but the girls were amazing and performed exceptionally well. Their final record was ‘played 12, won 11, lost 1’, finishing 3rd out of the 37 teams at the tournament. They have qualified for the National Finals. This was a remarkable performance, the best ever by an Under 11 netball team at Junior King’s, and Mrs Pattinson was, justifiably, very proud of her team. The boys are continuing to enjoy their hockey and had some excellent matches at the Sutton Valence tournament and against Kent College. On Tuesday, in our assembly, we had the end of season reports for rugby. All of the boys’ teams have performed well, especially the Colts A, who were unbeaten against local opposition. Now would be a good time to thank all of the staff who are involved with sport in the Middle School for all their time and energy in helping to run the various teams. I do hope that everybody enjoys a restful weekend. /IDM & CP ~IMPORTANT~ Please remember that Milner Lane is not exclusively an access road to the Junior King’s School. It is a public 2-way road with parked cars and both cyclists and pedestrians also use the road as access to houses and the Church. Please ensure that you turn into the road slowly and carefully and do not cut the corners as it is, increasingly, becoming extremely dangerous for members of the public who are having to take action to avoid cars, especially in the mornings. Please also remember that the speed limit is 5mph on school grounds at all times. Many thanks. The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 365 4 March 2016 Spanish Exchange In assembly this morning, the Year 8s who went on the Spanish Exchange, gave the whole school a presentation about their experiences on the trip. A highlight of the assembly was when Mr Castro unveiled a special surprise that he had managed to acquire! One of his friends from Spain works as a physiotherapist with Real Madrid and had managed to get the players to sign a shirt especially for Junior King’s! Mr Castro went through all of the names on the shirt; he had even managed to get Gareth Bale and Ronaldo’s signatures! ¡Qué bien! The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 365 4 March 2016 From Junior House Book week in Junior House has been a feast of fun! The week began with the launch of the inter-form reading challenge and the book plate design competition. The display board in Junior House is filling up with evidence of just how much reading is going on and the children are really rising to the challenge. On Tuesday, we held a Book Shop and continued with activities in class. On Thursday, the children came to school dressed as book characters and enjoyed some ’hot seating’. And then on Friday the book swap took place. The Book plate winners were announced and they are: Pani, Archie, Emmie, Phoebe and William H. Hot seating awards were given to Sophia, Enoch, Ben, Jasper S and Zara. This week in Junior House assembly Stars of the Week were awarded to Sophia, Jasper J, Thomas H and Enoch. Dylan sang a beautiful song and we discussed fellowship. Congratulations to the U9A Hockey team boys who went to Ashford for a tournament on Thursday and came home with the cup! They were outstanding by all accounts and very worthy winners! The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — Congratulations also to William H and Philippa, who were runners up in the Tim Peake competition. We had Science morning on Friday and a report will feature in the Week next time. I wish you all a lovely exeat weekend and remind Year 3 parents that the children need to be at school by 8.15 on Monday as we shall be leaving for the British Museum straight away. : @JuniorKingsSch /LAW www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 365 From the Music Department All those taking exams this term should sign up to play in the Exam Concert on Tuesday 8th March at 18:15. The sign-up sheet is in the music school corridor. Our big concert for the term is the Ensembles’ Concert on Thursday 10th March at 18:15 and will take place in the Barn. Most groups and ensembles will be involved in some way or another, including the Orchestra. The following ensembles are also down to play: Senior Flute Trio; Brass Ensemble; Year 4 Cello Ensemble; Djembe Band; Junior Strings; Middle Strings; Senior Strings; Clarinet Ensemble; Wind Quintet; Orchestra; Year 6 Band; Year 7 Bands; Year 8 Band. Tea is booked for 17:30 for those that wish to stay. ‘Best’ uniform is needed for all performers. 4 March 2016 If you are free this Saturday please consider attending the ‘Mass in Blue’ concert at King’s, in the Shirley Hall. Please see the poster for details. /TFr Regional Champions & National Qualifiers! The U11A Netball team took part in the Regional IAPS tournament at Felsted School. There were 37 teams in 4 pools and we were in a pool with 9 other schools. We played 9 matches and won them all, making us pool winners, with automatic qualification for National Finals to be held at Roedean School next Saturday. What an incredible achievement girls; you were absolutely fantastic! More details to follow next week. /CP From the Pool On Sunday, five Middle School pupils took part in the Kent Primary Schools’ Swimming Championships. They all did extremely well, and all came out with new personal bests. Toby swam 50m Breaststroke in a time of 0:52.73 (previous PB 0:56.84) and came 14th out of 27 swimmers. Jessica swam 50m Butterfly in a time of 0:39.73 (previous PB 0:40.89) and came 10th out of 33 swimmers. Hannah swam 50m Backstroke in a time of 0:46.59 (previous PB 0:47.07) and came 22nd out of 38 swimmers. Zoe swam 50m Freestyle in a time of 0:37.30 (previous PB 0:38.57)and came 13th out of 37 swimmers. Harriet swam 50m Breaststroke in a time of 0:54.54 (previous PB 0:58.77) but was unfortunately disqualified for a one handed touch at the turn. Well done to all those involved, and we look forward to hearing more results in the future. The Year 8s’ approach to the mock exams was very impressive. It was reassuring to see them rise to the challenge and approach them in a positive light. The results of the mocks will be released next week and will be used as a yardstick for the Common Entrance examinations in June. Our Year 8 boarders are entering a critical phase in their academic journey. The rest of the boarders were extremely accommodating during the week and ensured that the Year 8s were given plenty of time and space. We had a celebratory Dominoes Pizza Evening on the Friday for the Year 8s . A number of boarding staff helped the boarders demolish 14 extra-large pizzas. Saturday was the usual mix of sport, watching TV, chilling out and the eagerly anticipated Movie Night. Sunday was a slow start with a later than usual breakfast followed by prep and a lovely lunch. The afternoon activity was a brand new activity as we visited ‘Gravity’ in Maidstone. It is a massive trampoline park. The children (and staff) had a fantastic time with some of the pupils saying it was the “best activity ever”, “so much fun”, “tiring” and “cool!” The boarders were a credit to the school and followed all the safety guidelines. A special Sunday evening service was held in St Nicholas’ Church where the boarders were joined by the School Choir and members of the local community. A busy, fun and eventful weekend resulted in an early night for the children. The boarding community have thankfully escaped (at this stage) the dramatic effects of ‘The Bug’ that is affecting so many children and staff at school. I was very much affected by ‘The Bug’ and can tell you that it is extremely unpleasant. Please continue to remind your children to wash their hands and take the utmost care with their personal hygiene. This weekend is an exeat weekend and I hope that the children will enjoy the opportunity to spend time with friends, family and guardians. Mrs Jerman will be in touch with you shortly regarding the arrangements for the Easter Holidays. The whole boarding team would like to wish you all a very happy exeat!! The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 365 4 March 2016 U9 Ashford Prep Hockey Tournament Well, what an afternoon! We travelled to Ashford Prep with our team depleted through sickness and came back winners of the tournament! After last week’s super win against St Lawrence, there was a lot of belief in the team. As coach, I knew that there would be some excellent teams at the tournament and that if we could win half of our games we should feel happy with our performance. Our first game was against St Ronan’s and scored 3 goals without conceding. The next game was against King’s Rochester and we managed to do exactly the same, this time scoring two goals without conceding. Our third match was against Ashford and winning this would mean we should have booked a spot in the semi-finals. It was a tough match but we managed to win 1-0. Our final game in the pool was against Marlborough House who had also won all their games so far. Unfortunately we lost this match 2-0. This meant we still qualified for the semi-final where we were to face Kent College. In the semi-final Kent College played some excellent hockey and moved the ball very well. After 10 minutes there was no score and the game went to golden goal. For the first few minutes we were under huge pressure, but from a free hit Nathan spotted our striker Sam in space, hit the ball long and Sam got the all important touch on the ball to score and put us through to the final. In the final, the situation was very similar. Sutton Valence had looked excellent all afternoon and had not lost a match. After 10 minutes the score was 0-0 and once again we were into a golden goal situation. The boys soaked up lots of pressure and Sutton Valence shots were blocked or wide. Once again from a free hit, Nathan hit it long and with determination Sam out-muscled the Sutton Valence defender and managed to tap the ball into the net. The final whistle blew and the victory was ours: an incredible afternoon and an outstanding result. A huge well done to all the team, from defenders to goal scorers. A mention must also go to the team members who couldn’t make the tournament due to sickness, Tom and Ned. They will also receive a winner’s medal. FINAL RESULT: Winners PLAYER OF THE MATCH: The Whole Team Results Won v St Ronan’s 3-0 Won v King’s Rochester 2-0 Won v Ashford Prep 1-0 Lost v Marlborough House 0-2 Won v Kent College 1-0 Won v Sutton Valence 1-0 The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 365 4 March 2016 World Book Day 2016 Students and staff celebrated World Book Day this week. Mr Cox organised the annual book fair, with an excellent range of titles both classic and contemporary, and many classes had the opportunity to browse these during their English lessons. Alongside this, to mark the occasion this year, we have decided to undertake a Readathon. Students in Years 58 have been issued a reading card and a leaflet about this event. Essentially, each student sets themselves a personal reading challenge, whether it be to read one book or ten, and then gathers sponsors to support them in this endeavour. The aim is to have completed the reading challenge by the end of the Easter holidays, so that we can collect sponsorship cards and money in the first week of the summer term. The Readathon is organised by a national organisation that helps to raise money for a variety of children’s charities, for example Clic Sargent and Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. Aside from the benefits that supporting these wonderful causes will bring, there is an added bonus in that Scholastic Books will also provide us with tokens worth 20% of the total money that we raise in order to buy more books for the Library. If that weren’t enough, there is an extra incentive that will appeal to our students’ more competitive streak: the tutor group that raises the most money will each receive a free book of their choice from the catalogue in the school bookshop. Parents can assist by helping their children to find sponsors, keeping them on track with their reading challenge and helping them to collect the money at the end. Please can all sponsorship money be returned by Friday 22nd April. We will keep track of how much each tutor group raises and announce the winning group in due course. I hope that you agree that this an excellent initiative to get behind. Not only will we raise much needed funds for some worthy causes and help to provide new books for the school, but it will also help to spread the love of reading, which can only have a positive impact for each and every participant involved. /RA The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 365 4 March 2016 Junior House Book Week Can you guess who they are?! So many children wore clothes to signify the country of their family’s origin and the language they speak. Some of us wore international costume and others were inventive with the colour of our clothes, representing our mother country’s flag. In addition, many of us donated some lovely books in our mother language to our refurbished library. They tell traditional stories from the countries our families are from. We learned a lot about the languages our friends speak and the books they read at home. It has been a real celebration of the diversity of cultures we share in PrePrep. We will be following up on this success next term and will let you know our plans nearer the time. Thank you for your enthusiasm in embracing this event so fully. Parking Our efforts to improve our parking situation continue! For parents wishing to make a swift drop off of their child in the mornings, we suggest you continue to use the front car park. You may leave your child at the door with the teacher on duty, who will ensure they go straight to their classroom or library. However, if you anticipate taking a little longer, you may find it helpful to know that the third car park at the other side of the swimming pool often has spaces. From Monday, the big black gate will be unlocked from 8.00am to 8.30am to make it easier for you to walk to and from PrePrep from the third car park. In addition, dogs will be permitted on to the Pre-Prep site (but not into the building), so you can walk them from the car park, through the PrePrep playground, drop your child and continue through, exiting via the black metal gate. The car park to the rear of the Pre-Prep remains a whole school staff car park and is busy filling up from 7.00am until 9.00am. Please avoid parking there if at all possible. Many thanks. The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 365 4 March 2016 British Values We have been learning about the importance of British values in Pre-Prep this term and focusing on the rule of law. We discovered that rules and laws govern us at school, at home and when we are out and about. We discussed the importance of consequences if those rules and laws are broken and that we have a choice: good choices mean good consequences; poor choices lead to consequences that we may not like. To find out more, we interviewed PC Chris Green, who came to visit us. He told us about some of the laws in this country and showed us some of the equipment he has to carry when he is at work. He said that police officers want to help people, but that some other people want to break the law and they might have to be arrested and put in prison. He practised his hand-cuffing skills on some of us. They were heavy and uncomfortable and made us think about how a prisoner might feel. Some of us tried on PC Green’s hi-viz vest, which carries his radio, a video camera, his asp, pepper spray and his hand-cuffs. It was as heavy as carrying one of us on his back all day! Thank you PC Green for telling us so much about your job. Pre-Prep Notice Board Tuesday 15th March at 2.15pm – Year 2 Dance and French Spectacular in the Recital Room, Herbert Music School. Refreshments will be served after the performance in the Pre-Prep hall.
