Multi-Purpose Sports Court
ACC has received $50,000 from Impact Alamance for a multi-purpose sports court
to be constructed on the ACC campus. The project will support healthy school
environments. The court will be equipped for basketball, tennis, volleyball and
other games. It will provide opportunities for recreational physical activity for
students, faculty, and
staff between classes;
allow new fitness and
exercise classes for
ABSS Early and Middle
College students; and
serve the wider
community as a
location for clubs and
leagues to play. As a
result, ACC expects
that each year over
2,000 people will use
the court to increase
their physical activity
and develop an
appreciation for
lifelong recreation.
Exciting Happenings at ACC
ACC Culinary Students—A Winning Team
Alamance Community College’s Student Culinary Hot
Foods Team earned honors as the best culinary program
in the southeastern United States after taking the top
prize at the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Junior
Hot Foods Regional Competition in Atlanta last weekend.
The ACC team had practiced for months for the North
Carolina competition held in December, which they won,
ACC Culinary Hot Foods Team members (l-r) Trevor Slosek,
sending
them to Atlanta. “These students are all so
Evangeline Cruz, Jonathan Gonzalez-Cortez, Adriana Carreon,
dedicated,” said Chef Brian Bailey, ACC Culinary Arts
Department Head. “All are full-time students, many have full-time jobs, and then they volunteer to be
part of this team that must practice many, many hours to perfect their skills. It’s a major commitment
with no extra credit.” Next stop: the national finals in Phoenix, Arizona in July.
Recent Grants
This month, we learned the College is the recipient of three new grants totaling $180,000. That comes on
the heels of last month’s news that ACC received a $200,000 grant for new technology for our new
Mechatronics Engineering Technology program that begins this fall. To recap: We received a $70,000
grant to place two career coaches in area high schools. We received a $50,000 grant to construct a multipurpose sports court that will enhance the collegiate feel of our campus. And we received a $60,000 grant
to begin replacing the stairwell in the B Building. Congratulations to everyone who worked hard to
research and apply for these grants.
Dallas Herring Award Recipient
Juan Carlos Mosqueda, a non-traditional student at Alamance
Community College, is the school’s nominee for the 2016 Dallas
Herring Achievement Award. The award was established by the
North Carolina Community College System and honors the late
Dr. Dallas Herring, whose philosophy of “taking people where they
are and carrying them as far as they can go” is the guiding principle
of the community college system.
Mosqueda, a Liberty, NC resident, has persevered through personal
setbacks and post-traumatic stress related to his military service in
Iraq. Through support from friends and family, he became certified
as a personal trainer and opened his own business in Alamance
County. On the advice of a friend, he enrolled at Alamance
Community College in fall 2012 as a part-time student and
discovered his love for learning.
“Without the college, I never would have discovered my true potential,” said Mosqueda, 31. “As I work
toward an Associate in Arts degree and take business courses, my enthusiasm has not waned. I love
coming to school, I love reading, I love learning, and I love what Alamance Community College
represents.”
Carlos Mosqueda juggles his time among many activities: Student Ambassador, Graduation Marshal,
President of Aikido Martial Arts Club, and membership in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
After he completes his studies at ACC, Mosqueda hopes to transfer to Campbell University, where he
plans to major in physical therapy with a minor in business.

Congress Makes Permanent Charitable Giving Incentives in Year-End Omnibus Bill
In late December, Congress approved, and President Obama signed into law, a $1.1 billion omnibus spending
and tax package that funded the federal government through the end of the fiscal year (September 30, 2016)
and makes several significant tax changes. Notably for nonprofits, it permanently extends three incentives for
charitable giving:
 The food donation tax deduction provision raises the cap on giving and allows small businesses
donating wholesome excess food to a qualified nonprofit to take the same enhanced tax deduction that C
corporations have been permitted to take since 1976.
 The enhanced tax deduction for conservation easement donations has helped America's land trusts
work with farmers, ranchers, and other modest-income landowners to increase voluntary land conservation
by a third, to over a million acres a year when the tax incentive is in effect.
 The IRA charitable rollover option, which allows individual taxpayers aged 70 1/2 and older to donate
up to $100,000 from their individual retirement accounts (IRAs) directly to charitable nonprofits, has provided needed support for the work of social service programs, religious organizations, arts and cultural institutions, schools, healthcare providers, and other charitable organizations - all of which benefit Americans
across the country.
