New Writing Center Invites Students
New Writing Center Coordinator Debbie Burdick
welcomes students to take advantage of ACC’s firstever writing center. Burdick looks forward to working with students, faculty, and staff in support of
ACC’s “Writing Across the Curriculum” initiative and
the College’s Quality Enhancement Program (QEP).
Says Burdick: “I’m excited about putting my sevenplus years of writing center experience and seven
years of teaching English to work developing a new
center where students can improve their writing
skills. Faculty in all divisions can explore new ideas
for enhancing the role of writing in their curriculum.”

New Alert Notification System Activated
Emergency alerts have
been linked to all student,
staff and faculty ACCess email
accounts beginning this fall.
Anyone who has a college
email account is automatically
enrolled, says Ryan Hendricks,
ACC’s Security Supervisor.
“Faculty and staff members
who have both an ACCess
account and a Groupwise account can sign up using either,” says Hendricks.
Participants have an option
to add additional emergency
phone numbers, including
those for text messages, if
they open an “ACC Alerts”
account (from the ACC web
home page, go to Services for
Students, then Safety and Security, then ACC Alerts).
Says Hendricks: “Everyone
will get an email alert. But we
are pushing them strongly to
open an account and provide
separate cell phone numbers. This way, they will get
these emergency alerts in
more than one outlet. It’s a
better way to contact people
simultaneously.”
Message types will include
any emergency situation
on campus, and all weather
alerts.
The ACC Alert Mass Notification System is one aspect of
the federal Clery Act, which
requires all colleges and universities that participate in
federal financial aid programs
to give timely warnings of
crimes that represent a threat
to the safety of students or
employees.
“This is an example of we at
ACC trying to strengthen our
capabilities in that area,” says
Hendricks.
No one with an ACCess
email account can unsubscribe from the Alert Mass Notification System.

spent two days at the College recently to meet trustees and members
of the President’s Council before he assumes his duties on October
1 following the retirement of Dr. Martin Nadelman. Dr. Gatewood
(pictured here at left with Dr. Nadelman) currently serves as president
of the Cascade Campus of Portland Community College in Oregon.
The College’s scholarship committee, comprised of both
faculty and Student Development staff, convened on two consecutive
days in late July to study student applications in making their decisions
on scholarship awards for the fall semester. Pictured are Financial Aid
staff Connie Bowman, Vernell Rone, and Becky Smith (Assistant
Director) as they reviewed student applications projected on a screen in
the Gee Building board room.
Officer of the Quarter for the first quarter of
2013 was awarded this summer to Cheryl Pearce of Burlington,
security officer at the Dillingham Center. Ryan Hendricks, ACC
Security Supervisor, presented the commendation. Selections are
based on qualities displayed in the performance of their duties,
including initiative, good attitude, appearance, and going above
and beyond the call of duty. The Officer of the Quarter receives a
wall plaque and a $25 check for her efforts.
Recycling is alive and well at ACC–Use the
Blue Bins. Large blue co-mingle recycling bins around
campus accept the following materials: plastic bottles,
aluminum and metal cans, glass bottles, and paper
and magazines (not specifically listed on the bin, but
acceptable). Cardboard is picked up separately, designated
for a separate dumpster outside behind the Print Shop.
