About ATI
With over 50 years in motorsports, ATI is located just outside
of Baltimore, Maryland and houses one of the most advanced
machine shops in the industry. All machinery operations take
place in-house so that total quality control can be maintained.
Over the years ATI has earned a reputation for its cutting
edge technology, attention to detail and rigorous testing
under race conditions. By staying true to these basic
principles, ATI has built a loyal customer base. “It always
makes my day when a customer who has been racing for
over 20 years stops by to get his converter freshened up,”
Beattie, Sr. notes. Today, ATI manufactures a multitude of
high performance parts including competition transmissions
along with the incomparable Superglide® Transmission line,
Treemaster® Converters, Super Dampers®, as well as a
wide variety of performance enhancing internal transmission
components. ATI’s commitment to racing has allowed
the company to maintain a prominent position on the
cutting edge of high performance component design and
manufacturing.
ATI has been a participating contingency sponsor for several
sanctioning bodies for more than 40 years, not only the
national events, but also many divisional and special events.
ATI is a Major Contingency Sponsor of the NHRA, and IHRA
posting for Treemaster Converters® and Transmissions. One
of ATI’s most notable trademarks for racers is its mobile
transmission shop, which can be seen at selected racing
events across the country. Racers appreciate the 53-foot
Featherlite trailer stocked with transmissions, converters,
dampers and parts that may be needed at the track.
Tech Tips
Soaking Friction Material
Never install dry friction materials! Always soak them for at
least 30 minutes prior to installation. For friction clutches
and bands, soak prior to installation. Soaking allows the
friction materials to be fully impregnated with oil preventing
glazing while adding to the life of the friction material.
ET Advantage
Heads Up or Class racers can gain a slight elapsed time
advantage during the hot summer months by using the age
proven method of packing the intake and carburetor in ice
prior to an important run. Dual or high capacity “cool cans”
filled with dry ice will add a similar, temporary gain. More
recently, racers have found that by keeping a very minimum
amount of fuel in the car, and adding cool or chilled fuel
stored in the trailer or tow vehicle immediately prior to
the run will add to the total elapsed time save. Replace
and re-circulate the engine cooling system with ambient
temperature water and you are ready for the next round, a
few hundredths of a second quicker. Some racers have even
drained the third member lube for and an extreme situation
final round only advantage, but be warned – component
damage or other consequences might result.
Stall Speeds
Stall speed is affected by engine size, stroke and even
camshaft duration. Small changes in engine combination
can change the stall speed. At ATI, we custom design each
converter to your needs. With the exception of our 10, 11,
and 12-inch street converters, each race converter is hand
built one at a time for individual applications.
Determining Stall Speeds
In order to check your torque converter’s stall speed, put
your vehicle in high gear and drive the car at 1 to 2 miles
per hour. Push the gas pedal to the floor and note your flash
on the torque. This is the same as your stall speed. DO NOT
DO STALL TESTS ON CARS EQUIPPED WITH TRANSBRAKES.
The Little Details
Always remember the ultimate performance that can be
obtained from any engine combination is often dependent
upon the little details. Experimenting with cam degree
location total distributor advance, RPM at which the total
advance occurs, carb jetting, plug heat range, etc. may
result in a two tenths or more difference in otherwise
“competently identical’’ engines. In addition, a superior
piston-ring-cylinder wall sealing combination may provide
“hidden power’’ that provides a clear performance
advantage over other similar engines.
Burn Outs
When doing a burnout, try to avoid dry hops, tire hop
and wheel shake - a major factor in broken driveline
components. Although it is not always possible, avoiding
this behavior will extend the life of many parts in our
vehicle.
Make the Most of Your Test and Tune Session
You can learn a lot about optimizing your race car’s
performance and consistency at a test and tune session. If
you are a dedicated bracket racer, resist the temptation to
“thrash” your racer in an attempt to find .04 of a second.
Instead, use this opportunity to carefully monitor and
record engine and vehicle conditions prior to staging and
immediately after each run. By eliminating the pressures
of actual competition and minimizing between round
maintenance/tune up changes, you can focus on the time
intervals and procedures required to produce absolute
consistency. By integrating cooling, starting, burnout and
staging activities into a series of events, you can find the
desired gauge readings for each.

There are absolutely no compromises with ATI converters!
Unlike other converter manufacturers that use refurbished
OEM parts, ATI uses all new components. In fact, ATI is the
only independent company that has this capability. Because
of its ability to control all aspects of the manufacturing
process, ATI has the advantage of designing each
component for optimum efficiency and total durability. ATI
Converters include such features as the “C” series roller
clutch, anti-ballooning plates, centerless ground hub, inner
blade support, Torrington bearings and furnace brazed fins.
run to run than others on the market. They are also much
cooler running, which prolongs the life of converters as well
as transmissions.
Each ATI Converter is custom configured to your exact
application to put the power to the ground. It’s the perfect
compliment to an ATI transmission.
Be sure you’re not throwing away horsepower through
converter slippage. Loose converters are notorious for
slippage on the big end, sending valuable horsepower
out the window in the form of heat—heat that destroys
converters and transmissions, as well as causing
inconsistency from run to run. ATI converters typically
lock-up within 3% to avoid throwing expensive horsepower
away in slippage. They are assembled to a number called
HPPGR (horsepower per gear ratio) to provide all the stall
speed possible without slippage and are far more consistent

Torque Converter Tech Tips
How do I send in my converter for a freshen-up?
Send your converter to ATI at 6747 Whitestone Road,
Baltimore, MD 21207. When sending converters to us for
a freshen-up or stall change, please make sure that it is
completely drained so transmission fluid does not soak the
box resulting in a torn box, or worse – no box at all for the
converter to be delivered in. Also, be sure to provide us
with a good daytime telephone number where you can be
reached. This will help to ensure that your converter does
not sit on the shelf waiting to be repaired and keeping you
from racing next weekend.
Will my stall speed change after an overhaul?
No! Utilizing a detailed database of converter combinations
and specifications, ATI keeps detailed records of your
converter’s internal dimensions, build heights and other
necessary information. The converter is then rebuilt to
the exact specifications as before, unless you request a
dimension change.
What happens to the converter if I change
anything in my combination?
It is best to check with an ATI representative before making
the change. Something as simple as tire size can affect
torque converter performance. Gear ratio, stroke and
cam timing are the three major changes that will alter
flash characteristics. If you purchase another car, engine
or transmission, your torque converter can be sent back
to ATI to update it to the new specifications. If you switch
from a Powerglide to a Turbo or Turbo to Glide, the splines
can be changed inside the converter. You will need all the
specifications on the new combination before ATI works on
your converter.
more efficient converter designs. If your current or future
engine combination is based on a long stroke crank, don’t
forget that the torque converter may need to be modified
or changed to harness the additional power.
Should I do a stall test?
No!! ATI strongly recommends that you do not conduct
stall tests. Stall tests break parts, and not just converter and
transmission parts. Use the transbrake ON THE STARTING
LINE ONLY—not in the pits, not in the driveway, not for
your burnouts—AT THE STARTING LINE ONLY! Your cost
per run will diminish significantly. We have seen many
converters damaged by this rapid unloading when a ring
and pinion, planetary gear set, or input shaft fail. The
rampant hydraulic pressure actually breaks the pump blades
(fins) completely off the converter pump. It is for this reason
that converter manufacturers have for years warned against
“snagging the slicks” coming out of the water as RPMs
can go from 5,000 or 6,000 to an idle as the tires catch.
Once again, damage can be done to the sprag assembly.
Also remember that the converter builds up a tremendous
amount of heat in a short period of time. By not running
an engine after a stall test, all that heated fluid lays in
the converter without having a chance to go through the
cooler. Excessive heat eventually “fatigues” the metals in
the converter.
How do I determine my stall speed? Is it
different than flash?
What type of fluid should I use in my
transmission?
In order to check your torque converter’s stall speed, put
your vehicle in high gear and drive the car at 1 to 2 miles
per hour. Push the gas pedal to the floor and note your
flash on the torque. This is the same as your stall speed.
DO NOT DO STALL TESTS ON CARS EQUIPPED WITH
TRANSBRAKES. When speaking with your ATI sales rep or
distributor, be as succinct as possible regarding stall speed
and your converter. To converter builders, stall speed and
flash mean the same thing. If you ask for 4500 stall, this
means if you flash your converter from idle, it should go
to approximately 4500 rpm. For example, a 4500 torque
converter in your car will probably only footbrake to 3000
rpm before moving your car depending on the quality of
your brakes. Furnishing as much information as possible to
your sales rep ensures that you get the correct product you
are looking for.
We recommend Type F fluid in all transmissions and torque
converters.
What affects my stall speed?
Where is the serial number on my torque
converter?
ATI torque converters have serial numbers stamped across
the snout of the converter (the part that goes up against
the back of the crank). Any other numbers stamped on
the converter are foreign numbers and usually mean that
another manufacturer has worked on the converter.
Will long stroke cranks affect my converter
choice?
With the advent of affordable 4-1/4”, 4-3/8” and 4-1/2”
stroke big block Chevy cranks, and the resulting increases in
torque and horsepower, has come the increasing need for
Stall speed is affected by engine size, stroke and even
camshaft duration. Small changes in engine combination
can change the stall speed. At ATI, we custom design each
converter to your needs. With the exception of our 10, 11,
and 12-inch street converters, each race converter is hand
built one at a time for individual applications.

ATI SCS-30 Cooling System
The new SCS-30 system permits fluid to fill the
transmission and converter without starting the engine.
It also allows racers to click to neutral in the traps
and kill the motor without losing critical lube pressure
throughout the transmission. The system will completely
cool your transmission and converter between rounds
to increase consistency and reliability, while an
optional temperature gauge allows drivers to set a
predetermined temperature. The SCS-30 cooling system
is a factory installed option for new ATI Powerglide
Transmissions and Super Cases® or as an installed
option with transmission overhauls and upgrades.

Super Servo
ATI’s patent pending Super Servo gives the ability to
increase the servo bore from the stock 2.750” bore to
3.250” on any OEM or aftermarket Powerglide case. This
product increases the servo pistons apply area nearly
30% fromt 5.93 square inches to 8.29 square inches.
With this additional area you are now able to increase
the band’s clamping force equal to what you would
have running 300psi of line pressure, however you only
need 215psi to do so!

ATI Super Dampers
The damper preferred worldwide by quality drag race, endurance and NASCAR engine builders!
Elastomer O-rings
Elastomer O-rings allow the damper to be tuned to any
application. Outer O-rings control high RPM crank twist
while the inner O-rings control the middle RPM range.
Crankshaft Hub
Dampers mount to the
crankshaft via a steel
or aluminum Crank Hub.
Hubs can be custom
machined in-house
to accept a variety of
optional accessory belts.
Outer Shell
Outer Shells are made
from steel or aluminum
and feature 360° laser
scribed timing marks.
Serpentine style shells
feature belt drives for
OEM accessories.
Inertia Weight
Inertia Weights are made from
steel and range from 5” to 8” and
weigh between 2 to 12 lbs. A
damper will not function if it’s too
light for the application.
Inner Shell
Why Do Top Engine Builders Choose ATI?
The bottom line—torsional crank twist can be tolerated
in great amounts for a few cycles without crank breakage.
Twist on the crank, however, will be very detrimental to
camshaft timing and, consequently, be detrimental to the
amount of HP the engine produces and will eventually
break the crankshaft.
Unchecked torsional vibrations will also cause bolts to
loosen or break, cause main caps to move around on the
block, blacken the backside of the main and rod bearings
as well as fail the main bearings and eventually break the
crankshaft.
When NASCAR lines up a 40+ car field to start a 500 mile
race, at Atlanta for instance, each car will record about 3.3
million cycles on each engine. That’s a total of 132 million
engine cycles for the hours of practice and competition
for 40 cars. For comparison, if you have ever watched the
in-car monitors on TV, each car comes off the corners at
about 5000 to 5500 RPM. They then accelerate down the
straight away to 9500 - 9800 RPM and lift for Turn One,
exit at Turn Two and then do the same thing down the
back stretch. That’s the equivalent of 2 extremely hard 1/4
mile runs per lap. Multiply that by 500 laps or 1000 1/4
mile passes x 40 cars = 40,000 1/4 mile passes in 3 hours.
Breakage is usually confined to a valve spring, valve or
rocker arm. Crankshaft breakage is extremely rare. Every
engine is equipped with an ATI Super Damper: That’s
correct, the only damper that you will find in this or any
other NASCAR race.
If you enjoy buying crankshafts, use the off brands. If you
would like to will your crank to your grandson, use an ATI
Super Damper! They may cost a little bit more initially but
for the engine protection you are buying and the cost of
the repairs you are preventing, the cost is negligible. If you
fail one damper, or worse yet, one crankshaft or other
engine part, the difference in price won’t be worth talking
about unless it will be a lengthy conversation about how
many dollars you lost by saving a nickel on your damper.
Many Super Dampers have now been in use for over
15 years. They are rebuildable and the crank hubs are
replaceable. They have become standard equipment on
engines from companies like Hendrick Motorsports, ECRT,
Roush-Yates Racing, Penske, and virtually every NASCAR
team that uses or leases engines. Super Dampers can
also be found on Mopar 392s and GM’s 572 crate, 427
Anniversary and 327/427 COPO engines as well as Drag
Pak Challengers and the 2012 Ford Cobra SCJ race engines.
What’s more nearly every quality engine builder in the
world such as Reher-Morrison, Bill Mitchell, Awesome
Engines, Sonny Leonard, Steve Schmidt, Larry Morgan,
Scott Shaffiroff choose ATI Super Dampers!

ATI Versus the Competition
Why did GM trust ATI Dampers on their ZZ572 crate engine, their most powerful crate engine ever? The proof is in the test
charts, which shows ATI’s Super Damper testing against the leading viscous fluid style damper. Viscous dampers were made
for large, very low RPM engines and work well in that situation, however viscous fluid can not effectively dampen high
frequency vibrations created by RPM higher than 5,800. The ATI difference is lower crankshaft torsional twist and higher
HP—in this case, 14 extra ponies!

ATI Black Magic Funny Car
For 50 years, ATI’s allegiance to Drag Racing has been a driving force
in motorsports. From his early Stock days to his 70’s Black Magic Funny
Car, Jim Beattie, ATI’s founder, paved the way for thousands of racers
to make it to the Winners Circle with quality transmissions, converters
and components. Today, that tradition continues. JC
Beattie, Jr does valuable R & D with his ATI Drag
Pak Challenger and works with racers like Chris
Rini in the ATI-equipped NMCA Pro Street Camaro
to reset records and win championships. Located
in Baltimore, Maryland, ATI Performance Products
continues to focus on product innovation, extensive
in-house manufacturing capabilities and a strong
commitment to helping its customers succeed.
At ATI, we race to win!
