Operation Apple Pie
By: Mrs. Jennifer Timinski
The Family, Career,
and Community Leaders
of America Club (FCCLA)
and National Honors
Society (NHS) partnered
with Be the Change of
NJ, a local community
service and activism group, to help
those in need in our community this
holiday season. With the help of
students, faculty and staff, they
accomplished their goal of baking
150 homemade apple pies to feed
the homeless living in Newark Penn
Station. They also collected dozens
of new and gently used hats, gloves,
and blankets for those in need.
Donations of flour, sugar,
shortening, and apples
were collected along with
monetary contributions to
complete the project.
Students even donated
their apples at lunch to
help with the effort.
Over the course of
one
week,
students,
faculty, and staff joined together to
bake the pies during and after
school. Mrs. Puri’s Blocks 1, 2,
and 3 Foods classes worked
endlessly preparing dough and
peeling apples. FCCLA and NHS
students volunteered their time
after school to bake, package, and
load the apple pies for delivery.

Art Students Collaborate To Put On
Professional Show
By: Mrs. Rachael Rotella
On Thursday, January 7th, John F.
Kennedy Memorial High School
art students will present their
projects painting, sculpture and
mixed media in collaboration
with Perth Amboy high school
students who have been
enrolled in Art Major and
Advanced Placement classes.
Beginning at 6 p.m., the
Perth Amboy Gallery for the
Arts will host the opening
reception for these young
artists. All are invited to attend.
The show, completely
created by the students is titled,
Coexist. “There are many
things in nature that appear to
be complete opposites, yet they
manage to coexist. What's
more, they usually need each other; one cannot
be without the other. The purpose of the show is
to explore the complex relationships that exist
between these seemingly opposite forces that,
at the same time, exist in harmony with one
another” senior, Natalia Klimchuk describes the
shows purpose. You can
expect almost anything in this
body of work; teenage
abandon,
relationship
discontent, secret agents,
zealots, good versus evil,
maybe even aliens.
Working with these AP and Art
Major students has been
extremely rewarding, they
have all grown as artists and
at the same time have also
learned the foundation of
applying art to real world
scenarios.
We can’t wait to see you
there! The Perth Amboy
Gallery for the Arts is located
at 339 Read Street in Patten
Park, Perth Amboy.

Operation Apple Pie (cont’d from front page)
This project was inspired by a second
grade little girl named Riley who wanted
to give those less fortunate a taste of
home for the holidays. With the help of
our student body and staff at JFK, she
was able to see her idea
come to life. On November
24th, several teachers from
JFK along with Be the
Change of NJ, delivered all
150 pies to the homeless
along with a hot meal for the
holidays. The pies were a

huge hit and put a smile on the faces of
many. Ms. Puri, Ms. Kurowsky, and Ms.
Timinski would like to extend their gratitude to all the students, faculty, and staff
for their efforts with this community service project.
Be the change you wish to
see in the world. Thank
you for making a
difference!

National Honor Society Continues to Serve
By: Mrs. Colleen Kurowsky
November has been a busy month for JFK’s
National Honor
Society!
On
behalf of John
F.
Kennedy
Memorial High
School,
the
society
accepted the
Silver
Award
and a banner
from
the
Central Jersey Blood Bank. With 165 donations
during the 2014-2015 school year, JFK had the
second highest number of donations in all of
central jersey! Once again, the students and
staff of JFK showed their desire to help others
through the truly selfless act of donating blood.
The National Honor Society hopes to continue
this tradition of saving lives as it hosts another
blood drive here at JFK on Thursday, December
3.
During the month of November, the National
Honor Society honored local veterans by
hosting a former Navy officer, Ted Evon. Mr.
Evon was received by an engaged audience of
NHS members as he shared stories of his life
and of his time in the service. Students laughed
at his funny stories about boot camp in the
snow
and
friendly
pranks
on
the
base,
and cried at
his
December 2015
heartbreaking tales of lost friends. Mr. Evon
showed his audience all of the medals he
earned for his bravery and service, as well as
his Navy Yearbook full of pictures from his
training. The visit ended with National Honor
Society members thanking Mr. Evon for sharing
his story, and for his service to our country.
The National Honor Society ended the
month of November by helping out with Project
Apple Pie. Members dedicated time after school
to partner with Mrs. Timinski, Mrs. Puri, and the
FCCLA to bake apple pies for the homeless.
The idea actually
came from Mrs.
Timinski’s
daughter,
Riley,
and NHS was
more than happy
to help turn it into a
reality. Members
had a blast rolling
out the dough,
preparing
the
filling, and eagerly
waiting to see the
finished product.
The apple pies
were donated to
homeless
New
Jerseyans at Newark
Penn Station just
before Thanksgiving.
The pure gratitude
expressed
by
recipients of the pies
was enough to make
it clear that Project
Apple Pie was a
success!

Math Team Improves Seeking “Perfect Ten”
By: Mr. Patrick McGroarty
The JFK Math Team is made up of thirty
students who are interested in solving
mathematical problems for fun without a
calculator! Our Math Team is very ably
captained by Aditya Sridhar and David Tian
and the faculty advisor is Mr. McGroarty.
We normally meet twice a month. One of
these meetings is chaired by our co-captains
Aditya and David. During this meeting our
members are exposed to different styles of
mathematical problems. Our other monthly
meeting takes the form of a competition
sanctioned by the Central Jersey Math League,
which is held at a hosting school. We are
allowed to bring ten students to these
competitions. In September, we finished twelfth
place out of nineteen schools at a competition
held in Montgomery High School. In October,
we finished tenth out of eighteen schools at a
competition held in South Plainfield High
December 2015
School. In the November competition held at
Union County Magnet Campus, we finished
eighth out of nineteen schools.
The most consistently high performers
for our Mustangs have been David Tian, Aditya
Sridhar and Devvrat Patel. Each one of these
students has scored a nine out of ten at least
once, while David has attained a nine on two
occasions.
If you are a math whiz, or just someone
who is interested in solving mathematical
problems, please do not hesitate to contact Mr.
McGroarty for more information. You could
score the first perfect ten of the season!

Key Club’s Active Operations
By: Priya Agarwal
There are many exciting events coming up in
the month of December. The John. F Kennedy Memorial High School Key Club will be making Christmas
cards for Veterans so that we can share the love of
Christmas with the community. All the members of the
Key Club will meet up and make loving cards using
provided materials such as markers and construction
paper. In addition, for the first time, key club members
will have an opportunity to volunteer at a food bank.
This will provide a more hands on way of giving back
to the community.
Operation Christmas Child is one of the
most anticipated events of the year. This year there
was a large turnout of kids to make boxes. The donation for each box was seven dollars and about 30
members made boxes. A large set of supplies were
set out on a table to put in the boxes. The students
picked an age group and gender and decorated the
box accordingly. Markers, crayons, and colored
pencils were also provided to make a cute note for
the child who would receive the box. Everyone
made a note for their Christmas Child. Many students decided to work in pairs while making the
boxes. The seven dollars that were put in the box
were for the shipping of the box since they go to
various countries. Each box was customized in a
different way with unique items and decorations.
Most of the members brought shoe boxes from
home. The letters written were simply precious and
the children will get that warm feeling that Christmas brings when they read them. Those are the
things that make Key Club worth it. Operation
Christmas Child is one of
those things that you know

will allow you to put a smile on someone else's
face. The best gift that a person can give is a
smile.
An exciting Volleyball Tournament was held
at ALJ High School in the month of November. All
Key Clubs from Division 13 and 14 were welcome
to participate. The John F Kennedy Key Club had
three teams set out to win the tournament. Many
players from the JFK Memorial High School were
also members of the Varsity Volleyball team. A few
of these students are Conner Freemen and Francesca Garrison. The admission fee was either five
dollars or five pounds of food. Our school was on
raffle duty. As a result of this tournament a lot of
food
was
accumulated
and all the
key
club
members got
to
spend
some quality
time
with
one another.

Many Key Club members including myself made
lasting friendships during the tournament. The players had a great time. Those that were watching had
a wonderful
time as well.
There were
snacks
and
pizza at the
event. Some
of the snacks
were
even
homemade
such as the
truffles
and
brownies.
The players
had
some
time to practice before the
actual games
began.
The
sportsmanship was impressive by every school and
all in all it was a great event.

Boys’ Cross Country Ends Season with
Underclassmen On Top
By: Mrs. Rachael Rotella
Throughout the Fall season, these young
men truly defined the meaning of what a Cross
Country team is. As a group they became more
dedicated and determined every day. We had one
of our most successful years in cross country,
although our record was 6:2, our loses to Monroe
High School and Woodbridge High School were
within a mere points.
Our underclassmen had a lot of success
this year. Newcomer freshmen, Preetham
Anumapuram and Keshav Kalia joined the varsity
team all the way to State Sectionals. Preetham
brought home three medals this season, the first at
Greystone Park and then again at the Six Flags
Safari invitational and finally for the freshman race
at the GMC Championships, placing top 30. On
October 27, 2015, Preetham, Keshav, Roman
Fabbricatore and Shyamal Patel dominated the
two mile race in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th place
respectively.
The Boys Varsity team poses on the
start line before State Sectionals
Each member of the boys team plays a
valuable role, however our awards recipients this
year were as follows; Senior, Rahual Mahju
December 2015

season with Coach Rotella and
Coach Seavy at State Sectionals
received
our Most Valuable Player Award for the 3rd year
in a row, having set the tone for the team placing
first for the Mustangs in six out of eight division
meets. Senior, Thambu Jisnnu ran his heart out for
this team, always worked hard and always finished
top two for the mustangs. For that reason he
receives the Mustang Award for being an
outstanding student and competitor. Sophomore
Prakher Chandra received our Most Improved for
reaching his goal and breaking a personal best
time of 18:23 compared to his PR last season of
19:46. Not only was he a mentor to the younger
members but was always there for his team,
always an asset during a race, and stepped up on
when he was needed. Finally our Sportsmanship
Award goes to Senior, Wyatt Emme for his
attitude on and off the course. Wyatt did not miss
one practice, he was the last out of the locker
room every day to make sure everything was
taken care of and he played a vital role even
without a captain’s title.
We’re looking forward to next season; the
underclassmen will keep up the hard work. We
know it’s not about a season record. A winner is
someone who sets their goals, commits
themselves to those goals and then pursues their
goals with all the ability that is given to them.

Girls’ Basketball Hopes to Continue Success
By: Coach Nicholas Smith
This year the girls’ basketball team will be
led by Seniors Clare Lewis, Priti Patel and
Jackie Soper. The team is looking to continue
on the success of the girls’ basketball program.
They will also have a major impact from our
underclassmen as they improve their skills to
become varsity player. We look forward to
seeing you at our games this year.
Competition Cheerleading Prepares for Season
By: Coach Jessica Herres
The 2015-2016 Competition Cheerleading
team is made up of 15 talented
individuals. The squad started
off their season with summer
workouts
to
better
their
endurance and skill work for the
type of routine they were going
to have to learn and perform to
perfection.
The
girls
will
practice three to four days a
week as well as cheering at basketball games
and competing every weekend starting January
11.
They will perform in seven local
competitions
including
Bishop
Ahr,
Woodbridge, Jackson, St. John
Vianney, and David Brearley.
They will be ending their season
with a National competition in
Ocean City Maryland. In
Maryland they will compete
against 15-20 teams. Ms.
Obrien and myself are looking
forward to a great season with
this fantastic group of ladies.
Boys’ Winter Track Team Preview
By: Coach Robert Herre
The Boys’ Indoor Track team is certainly
looking forward to the winter season. Returning
athletes include sprinters Junaid Mughal and
Brandon Redd, hurdler Anthony Del Poppolo,
and long distance runners Rahual Mahju,
Thambu Jisnnu, Mehul Patel, and Wyatt Emme.
These athletes will be leading the way along
with the rest of the squad.
The Mustangs will be competing in the
Spiked Shoe Invitational in New York in late
December and from there will prepare for the
