The JFK Marching Mustangs played the Star Spangled Banner, and after the Color Guard completed their salute, Taps was played by a lone trumpeter. In attendance were all of the JFK Social Studies classes, as well as Mr. Cilento, Mr. Daly, and various faculty and staff. In our history classes, our students learn about all of the wars that the United States has been involved in. In honor of Memorial Day, we take special care to honor all of those brave men and women who died serving their country in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, the Iraq War, the War in Afghanistan, and the War on Terror. Regardless of political opinions, these brave people put their country first and honorably served, making the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The JFK Community is grateful for that sacrifice, and for all the brave men and women still serving in our military. John F. Kennedy Memorial H.S. A State of New Jersey Best Practice School John F. A State of New Jersey Best Practice School Kennedy Students Recognized by National Merit Scholarship Program By: Mrs. Alison Kirk It is our honor to share that six of Kennedy’s stellar students have been recognized by the National Merit Program. The National Merit ® Scholarship Program is highly regarded academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) Of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/ NMSQT® Selection Index scores (critical reading + mathematics + writing skills scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers will be notified through their schools that they have qualified as either Commended Students or SemiFinalists. This is a tremendous accolade that will surely aid them in the college admissions process. This year Kennedy joyfully congratulates Zia Bedi, Caitlin Connelly, Elisa Liang, Zarna Ray, Aditya Sridhar and David Tian. We are so proud of your efforts! Ryan Kelly: National Merit Special Scholarship Recipient By: Mrs. Alison Kirk Congratulations to senior Ryan Kelly who has been selected as a National Merit Special Scholarship recipient. Ryan has received the Automatic Data Processing, Inc. Henry Taub Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the ADP Foundation. Many businesses and corporations sponsor a fixed number of awards each year to National Merit students who meet specified June 2015 criteria. Winners of Special Scholarships are chosen on their academic accomplishments and who also scored high on the 2013 National Merit Qualifying test (PSAT/ NMSQT.) At JFK, Ryan has participated in both Varsity Baseball and Cross -Country and has selected and succeeded in some of our schools most advanced coursework, including several Advanced Placement classes. A State of New Jersey Best Practice School CBS Producer Visits Journalism Class By: Mrs. Jessica Vitali (and her journalism students) When CBS’s Bob Bicknell visited the journalism classroom on May 1, 2015, he left students with a clear understanding of the field, as well as valuable life advice. Mr. Bicknell is a producer, writer, and editor for the station with 25 years of experience in broadcast journalism. His career includes shows such as “The Ten O’clock News,” “Good Day, Philadelphia,” “Up to the Minute,” and “The Early Show”. Mr. Bicknell spoke of the various types of journalism media, the path to pursue the career, and the importance of reading and writing skills. Mr. Bicknell showed journalism students a variety of his work. Segments Bicknell produced were the Baltimore protests, the Bruce Jenner story, and the horrifying secrets behind Florida’s Dozier School for Boys. Mr. Bicknell discussed the process of piecing together a news story and some of the challenges in everyday journalism. These obstacles include submitting work on a short deadline, presenting a concise story from a multitude of facts and footage, and fierce competition. Mr. Bicknell opened our eyes to the June 2015 cumbersome task of creating approximately a minute of air time. He made many references to lessons covered in journalism class, such as the “inverted pyramid” writing style and ethical standards for journalists. Students were fascinated by Mr. Bicknell’s enthusiastic and charismatic personality, and the way he made the material come to life. Mr. Bicknell also offered advice on pursuing a career in journalism. Above all else, it is crucial to read and write as often as possible. In addition, he emphasized that it is not only about what college or university one attends, but what they make out of life and the kind of person they are. Students appreciated Mr. Bicknell’s honesty when he encouraged them to choose a career they are passionate about, rather than be guided by financial prospect. Having a job that is not thought of as “work” is life’s greatest reward. These were important lessons that can be applied to any field. Journalism students enjoyed listening to Mr. Bicknell speak on his experiences in the television industry. It was a pleasure learning about Mr. Bicknell’s journey in journalism and his love for the profession. Mr. Bicknell’s visit was certainly a memorable day in JFK journalism. Youth volunteers from throughout our community were recognized at a Recognition Day at the Woodbridge Community Center on April 19. Eddie has displayed exemplary service to his school and community. An honor roll student, Eddie is a member of both the National Honors Society and Heroes and Cool Kids. In addition to numerous activities on the Kennedy campus, he has donated his time unselfishly to the Iselin Fire Department, where he has recently been promoted to Lieutenant. Eddie is a focused and motivated young man who has chosen to study criminal justice with a future career in law enforcement. It is no surprise Eddie has chosen a helping career where he can continue to share his strong sense of community and goodwill. We joyfully congratulate Eddie and his family on this honor and wish him all the best in college and beyond. JFK Business Teachers Winners of Financial Literacy Contest Business teachers Danielle Sawyer and Jonathan Toczynski were announced winners of Next Gen Personal Finance’s (NGPF) First Annual Financial Literacy Month Contest. One of Danielle and Jonathan’s projects entered into the contest won the “Best Activity” award, in which they won $500 and were both featured in an NGPF blog and Twitter post (@NextGenPF). The “Best Activity” award is for activities that are “creative, teach key personal finance skills and provide supports that make them easy for other June 2015 educators to implement in the classroom.” They created a Cost of Living Project, in which students create a real-life budget impacted by decisions they make about where they live and the career they choose. Students also conduct their own research to determine their cost of housing and transportation. Danielle and Jonathan were winners amongst over forty entries from high school and college educators around the nation. The pair would like to thank NGPF for creating a contest in which educators can assist other educators in making a positive impact on students. A State of New Jersey Best Practice School Students' art honors sacrifices of veterans By: Mike Deak via mycentraljersey.com The message of Memorial Day is simple: "Never forget." Students in two Central Jersey communities have created art in prominent public places that eloquently reminds their neighbors that the sacrifices of those who served in the military should never be forgotten. On Thursday, eighth-graders from Somerville Middle School posted their 4-by8-foot mural depicting the struggle of veterans at the Division Street pedestrian plaza in Somerville. In Woodbridge, art students from Woodbridge, Colonia and John F. Kennedy Memorial high schools unveiled the Veteran Art Mural Wall at the train station on Friday afternoon. The students in Woodbridge were helped in the June 2015 creation of the murals by the senior artists from the Evergreen Senior Center. The Woodbridge project is an ambitious tribute to soldiers who participated in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm and the continuing war on terrorism in the Middle East. "It's beautiful," said Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac, who spearheaded the project. In Somerville, the mural depicts silhouettes of soldiers before steep mountains with a sky that's the American flag. The mural was a project in Somerville Middle School's Character Education program that seeks to instill community values into youths, said teacher Jennifer Ferguson. Together, the students developed the concept for the mural, which carries the message that all of us, including veterans, have to overcome challenges in day-to-day life. And once the concept was developed, the students worked together on the drawing and painting, important lessons in the Character A National & State of New Jersey Service-Learning Leader School Page 9 John F. Kennedy Memorial H.S. A State of New Jersey Best Practice School Students' art honors sacrifices of veterans (cont’d) Education program, Ferguson added. Art has the power to bring together all members of the community, said student Kira with Abigail Varker, who was traveling with her family through Rahway and saw an art project commemorating veterans. McCormac's community breakfasts in the Colonia section. That was when Abigail, who's now a student at Mount St. Mary Academy in Watchung, was in grade school. But the idea stuck in McCormac's head and on Friday it became a reality. Twenty-seven art students from Woodbridge High School created the Afghanistan and Desert Storm murals. The Civil War, World War II and Vietnam War murals were developed by 20 art students from John F. Kennedy Memorial, and 14 art students from Colonia created the Revolutionary War and World War I murals. The 12 artists from the Evergreen Senior Center created the Korean War mural. "They're all great," McCormac said. To see the article on MyCentralJersey.com please visit: Edgar. "We need a little bit of meaning in our lives," she said. The idea for Woodbridge's Veteran Art Wall originated June 2015 She asked her parents what could be done to have a similar project in Woodbridge and they told her to talk to the mayor, which she did at one of http:// www.mycentraljersey.com/ story/news/ education/2015/05/29/students -art-honors-sacrificesveterans/28175463/ A National & State of New Jersey Service-Learning Leader School Page 10 John F. By doing this she improved her artistic ability and to step out of her comfort zone and used silhouettes for the rest of her painting. Mathew’s, inspiration was everyday life. By taking actual building materials that are used to build the house. He made his interpretation of workers building a house. He added the extra 3D touch…PVC and copper pipes, 2x4 lumber, ceramic tile sheetrock, insulation etc. which really made the silhouettes stand out. By working with Jessica he was able to add his personal creativity. He is a true craftsman. Jessica and Mathew both realized that when you plan something out, it doesn’t always go that way. When a new day comes, new ideas appear with it. They are both able to leave their own mark in the school and to show people what industrial arts careers really looks like, for example, plumbers, electricians, masons and carpenters are some of the many ways to “BUILD YOUR CAREER.“ This senior project was to show some of the many building careers that help build America every day. Although it is a work in progress, I’m sure everyone that walks by will think it is something amazing… Another way to build your career at JFK. Many students at John F. Kennedy stand out, but there are two shinning senior stars, Jessica Fiore and Mathew Whalen. These two students are in Mr. Bergin’s Advanced Drafting class. They both worked alongside each other and created a beautiful wall full of inspiration, creativity, and original artwork located outside room 130: A “Build your Vocational Career” mural. Jessica’s inspiration for this wonderful work of art was she wanted people to see other careers of work if they believed college wasn’t for them. She was able to add her own artistic spin on the silhouettes she used to display the various construction careers. There was much research put into this on her part. The letters that read “BUILD Your Career.” The research for Jessica was Above: Jessica Fiore adds finishing touches to the silhouettes. to find and recreate by using Below: Panoramic view of the “Build Your Career” Mural. A State of New Jersey Best Practice School Boys’ Varsity Tennis By: Coach Sharon DiLonardo The Boys’ Varsity Tennis team entered the 2015 season knowing that it would be considered a rebuilding year. Kennedy finished the 2014 season with a solid record of 16 wins – 5 losses and graduated 5 seniors from the starting line -up. The Mustangs were now faced with an entire new line up but were prepared to meet the upcoming challenges. The main goal of this season was focused on player development and improvement. The Mustangs were led by senior four-year starter Shahzad Khan, moving up to the 1 st singles position and compiling an individual season record of 9 wins – 12 losses. Senior Raj Patel earned the 2 nd singles position and posted a record of 9 wins – 10 losses after missing the first two matches of the season with an injury. Sophomore Siddhant Pathare filled the 3 rd singles spot and set a mark of 8 wins –12 losses, with two of the losses coming at 2 nd singles position. Returning varsity player junior Mathujan Yogarah and junior Kunal Vanjani combined at 1 st doubles to post the best individual record for the team with 13 wins – 8 losses. The 2nd doubles duo of senior Richal Ilagan and sophomore Sameer Ahmad rounded out the line-up and set a mark of 8 wins – 10 losses. Also seeing Varsity action were seniors Lokesh Desai, Eric Jimenez, and Mayank Kaushal along with sophomores Veer Kachhiapatel and Advait Manur. Once the season got underway, it felt like a roller coaster ride. It took a few matches for the line up to gel and get on the winning track. The Mustangs were competitive in every match but hit a couple bumps in the road and suffered some close, disappointing losses. Despite the frustration of those matches, the Mustangs remained positive and determined throughout the season. The Mustangs were able to demonstrate a total team effort en route to five team wins recorded as 5 -0 shut-out victories. Kennedy concluded the 2015 season with a GMC White Division record of 6 wins – 10 losses and a season record of 8 wins –13 losses. The season was a positive learning experience with many new players breaking into the starting June 2015 line-up and several players learning the skills and challenges of a new position. Our focus now is taking the lessons learned this season as we look towards the future to build our program. With four players returning in line-up for next season, the future is bright for the Mustangs. Losing three seniors from the Varsity line-up, the Mustangs have a talented group of underclassmen ready to compete for a starting position and continue our winning tradition. Showing a great deal of talent and promise are sophomores Kedar Jani, Veer Kachhiapatel, and Darshal Shah and freshmen Savan Patel, Brian Rose, and Naveenan Yogeswaran. Highlights of the season include competing for the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2 State Team tournament for the 11 th year in a row. The Mustangs were eliminated in the first round by a strong Scotch Plains-Fanwood squad. Other highlights include Coach Sharon DiLonardo recording her 200th career tennis coaching victory. The Mustangs are very proud to be selected by the GMC White Division Coaches as the recipient of the 2015 GMC White Division Sportsmanship Award. The 2015 Boys’ Tennis Spring Sports awards were presented to: Most Valuable Player – Shahzad Khan (4 yr. starter), Most Improved Player – Raj Patel, Sportsmanship Award – Richal Ilagan and Mustang Award - Lokesh Desai. Congratulations to the 2015 Boys’ Tennis Team on a job well done! Coach DiLonardo and the Boys’ Varsity Tennis Team would like to wish our seniors Lokesh Desai, Richal Ilagan, Eric Jimenez, Mayank Kaushal, Raj Patel, and Shahzad Khan the best of luck and offer a big and heartfelt “thank you” for their leadership, dedication, and contribution to making the memories of the season. A National & State of New Jersey Service-Learning Leader School Page 15 John F. Kennedy Memorial H.S. A State of New Jersey Best Practice School Boys Track Champions By Coach Brad Altland The 2015 Boy’s track team completed a “perfect season” as they enjoyed their first season on the all-weather track and field complex which was completed last Fall. Coach Altland, Coach Maurizio and Coach Tedesco guided the 64 track athletes to an undefeated White Division Championship by posting a 6 – 0 record.. Along the way, the Mustangs hosted (and won) the First Annual Mustang Invitational which saw 35 other teams compete at the new 8-lane facility. The ample jumping venues and new throwing areas for the field events made this event a memorable experience for all involved, in addition to being a great fund raising event for both the boy’s and girl’s track teams. The season concluded with the first ever night track meet versus Woodbridge which in victory, clinched the division title for the Mustangs. The team had early season success as they won the Raritan “Rocket Relays” and went on to finish fifth at the “Husky Relays” in Matawan. A second place finish in the White Division Relays and fifth place finish at the GMC relays and GMC Championships led up to the team placing fourth at the State Sectional Championships. Although the team did not produce any individual champions in the GMC relays or Championships, the Mustangs brought home plenty of medals. At the Sectionals Championships, Seniors Justin Shears (400IH) and Joe Egri (pole vault) both won gold medals. Joe’s vault of 14’ 0” es- June 2015 tablished a new outdoor school record in that event. Junior Anthony Del Popolo placed third in the 400 hurdles and sophomore Alexander Moore placed 5th in the 400 meter dash. Justin also placed second in the high hurdles and Joe picked up three additional medals in the high jump (3rd), triple jump (4th) and long jump (6th). The 4 x 100 relay (Devlin Sayles, Brandon Redd, Matt Sylvester, Ari King) placed 6th, the 4 x 400 relay (Alex Moore, Edmund Amparbeng, Devlin Sayles,, Justin Shears) placed 5th, and the 4 x 800 relay (Thambu Jisnnu, Nathaniel Brown, Savan Patel, Rahual Mahju) placed 5th. At the State Group 3 Championships, Joe Egri won the gold medal by clearing 13’6” in the pole vault which qualified him for the Meet of Champions. The following seniors were members of the track team: Joe Egri (jumps), Justin Shears (hurdles/ sprints), Matt Sylvester (hurdles/sprints), Eric Bruno (sprints), Peter Conde (throws), Joe Francis (throws), Rey Jimenez ( jumps/hurdles), Ari King (sprints), Justin Morgan (throws), Savan Patel (distance), Brendan Patterson (throws), Maxwell Tahzib (throws), Andrew Wallin (distance) and Kieran Williams (distance/javelin). This year’s squad had 25 juniors who excelled in all events. The team welcomed newcomers Bernardo Abreu and Joseph Balestrieri in the throwing events. The sprinters won many medals when competing against other freshman at the various invitationals and were led by Eder Mendez, Nikhil Thapa, Damari Leacock, Raj Patel, Pritish Nayak, Shivam Patel and Vrushik Patel. Deandre Carter contributed in the jumping events and the distance runners- Prakher Chandra, and Brendan Schwear- contributed on all levels. June 2015 Following the season, many of the Mustangs were honored by being selected to the All-White division team by the opposing coaches who recognized their performances. The all-division team included Edmund Amparbeng, Nathaniel Brown, Anthony Del Popolo, Joseph Egri, Rey Jimenez, Thambu Jisnnu, Ari King, Rahual Mahju, Alexander Moore, Savan Patel, Justin Shears and Matthew Sylvester. In addition, Joe Egri was selected to the All-GMC Conference team. Head coach Brad Altland was also honored for the team’s outstanding performances by being named All- Division and AllConference Coach of the Year. With so many underclassmen returning, the future looks bright to keep the team’s winning streak alive moving forward into the 2016 outdoor season. However, it will be tough to replace the exceptional leadership provided by our departing seniors. As part of the Kennedy track tradition, it is now time for new leaders to step forward and the coaching staff has no doubt that this will occur. Good Luck Seniors! A State of New Jersey Best Practice School Boys’ Baseball 2015 Season Wrap-Up By: Coach Eric Mills Sportsmanship and Tom Sharfetz Most valuable The 2015 JFK Baseball team lead by seniors Connor Aston, Brian Bucher, Jonathan Cuzzola, Ryan Kelly, Devin Moscarelli, Thomas Sharfetz and Sam Stolz finished the year with a 7-18 overall record and 2-8 in the Greater Middlesex Conference White Division. The Mustangs won a post season GMC Play in game this year as well as qualified for the njsiaa player in addition to being named First Team AllWhite Division outfielder. This season saw the Mustangs have 4 players bat over .300 in Ryan Kelly, Tom Sharfetz, Jordy Mora and Michael Matusz. On the mound Kennedy did just as well, with 3 pitchers posting and ERA under 4.00 in Josh Buchholz, Tom Sharfetz and Michael Matusz. A State of New Jersey Best Practice School New Facilities, New Hope for Girls Track & Field By: Coach Robert Seavy Despite a disappointing 2-4 record in dual meets, the girls’ Spring Track team have several reasons for feeling positive now that the season is over. First, the new JFK track facility has provided a state of the art venue for training and competition. The girls enjoyed hosting the inaugural Mustang Invitational at the end of April and appreciated having home track meets for the first time in many years. Second, this year’s freshman class showed a lot of promise. Several freshmen contributed at the varsity level and won numerous medals at freshman meets. Jackie Kelly was the team’s fastest hurdler; Jelisa Lovett had the best long jumps and high jumps this season; Jaylin Cabrera led the throwers in the shot put and discus; and Stuti Vyas established herself as a rising star of middistance running. Stuti earned all-division honors in the 1600, went to Penn Relays as a member of the 4 x 400m team, was second on the team in varsity points, and set the school record in the 800m run three times. Along with solid varsity efforts from Harvinder Kaur, Jordan Daniels, and Madison McClain, the future looks bright for the girls’ track program. Finally, the girls should feel positive about the legacy the senior class left at JFK. Rose Ogrodnik, Arianna Ventura, Heleen Mendez, and Ashley McGinn led the sprinters; Akhila Sankaramanchi, Ivy Chan, and Emily Shibata set a good example for the distance runners; and Alexa Novoczynski and Khushbu Patel were role models for the field event competitors. Rose and Alexa won all-division honors as a result of their strong performances at state sectionals. Alexa earned a 5th place medal in pole vault and Rose finished 3rd in the 100m and 4th in the 400m. Coach Seavy is proud of their efforts throughout the year and wishes the seniors the best of luck after graduation. Left: Congratulations and best of luck to the graduating seniors! A State of New Jersey Best Practice School Mustangs Golfers Move to the White Division for the 2015 Season by Coach Tony Palombo The Mustang Varsity Golf Team, comprised of 8 boys and 1 girl, competed this year with 3 returning players and 6 first-year players. The team concluded the 2015 season with an 8 win and 13 loss overall regular season record and a 7 win and 7 loss division record, finishing in fourth place in the eight-team White Division of the Greater Middlesex Conference. The team received the 13th seed in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament, losing to South Plainfield High School, the 12th seed, in the Preliminary Round at the Plainfield West Nine. The Mustang Golf Team competed on a variety of golf courses this year including hosting its home matches at both Colonia Country Club and Ash Brook Golf Course in Scotch Plains. The team also competed in regular season and tournament away matches at Tara Greens Golf Course in Somerset, Raritan Landing Golf Course in Piscataway, Plainfield West Nine in Edison, Spooky Brook Golf Course in Franklin, Tamarack Golf Course in East Brunswick, Forsgate Country Club in Monroe, and The Meadows at Middlesex in Plainsboro. Due to the prolonged wintry weather and wet golf course conditions, there was virtually no pre-season course play for the golf team. The team would normally play at least a dozen practice rounds in the month of March but this year our first and only practice round prior to our first match occurred on April 1, 2015 at the Plainfield West Nine. The team opened the season on April 2, 2015 with a match versus the Woodbridge Barrons at Raritan Landing Golf Course. The team prepared for the season with morning indoor swing training sessions and one occasion of using the swing simulator booth at a Golf Galaxy store in Woodbridge. Despite the limited practice time on a golf course, the team began the season by winning its first four division matches. Senior Robert Williams posted the team’s lowest scoring average this season with 48.2 strokes per nine holes in his 12 matches. He averaged 12.8 strokes over par for each of his regular season matches. He was the team leader in birdies with June 2015 four. Robert was selected to the Greater Middlesex Conference Coaches All-Conference 2nd Team. Junior Wyatt Emme averaged 48.6 strokes per nine holes in his 12 matches. He averaged 13.3 strokes over par for his regular season matches. Junior Ian Smith averaged 53.5 strokes per nine holes in his 13 matches. He averaged 18.7 strokes over par for each of his regular season matches. Robert Williams and Wyatt Emme represented the Kennedy Mustangs at the Greater Middlesex Conference Boys Championship at The Meadows at Middlesex Golf Course. Robert finished in 45th place and Wyatt finished in 56th place in the individual portion of the tournament. New members of the team for 2015 also were contributors to the team’s success. The freshmen on the team included Alex Wolferman with a 55.6 average, Matt Clark with a 58.6 average, James Hart with a 58.9 average, and Tom Della Sala with a 59.0 average. Junior Juanita Borges and sophomore Albert Cibelli also joined the team as first year players in 2015. The 2015 season was very pleasant for the team. The players persevered through a rigorous schedule that included contending on the links with our division opponents and with larger schools that had well established golf programs with winning traditions. The team endured spring weather conditions that frequently were quite adverse with an abundance of cold, wet, and windy conditions. Despite the difficulties with the spring weather, our team members displayed a great deal of passion and enthusiasm for the game of golf. The 2016 season should be promising with the experience gained in 2015 and with the anticipated continuing improvement of our returning players. This marked Coach Palombo’s final season as the Mustang Golf Coach and he wishes the program continued success in the seasons ahead. He also would like to thank all of the Administrators, Athletic Directors, Parents, and Student-Athletes for the past 15 years who made his experience as a scholastic varsity golf coach at John F. Kennedy Memorial High School very gratifying and pleasurable. A National & State of New Jersey Service-Learning Leader School Page 20 John F. Kennedy Memorial H.S.
