This is one of the “nuts and bolts” columns for you this week. First of all, to all who supported this year’s Siamsa na nGael concert this past Tuesday evening at the Symphony Center, a rousing THANK YOU! While our sponsorship support ($) was down a bit this year, the number of those in attendance was up! Siamsa has become an annual Chicago event for St. Patrick’s Day. In addition to our prayerful Liturgies celebrating Patrick, Siamsa also has become a profound, beautiful expression of the gift of Irish culture. We stand so grateful to Bill Fraher, our music director, and Mary Evers for composing and producing the storyline and music for the concert. They are so gifted and talented. We cannot thank enough the gifted musicians and the spectacular concert choir of Old St. Pat’s. Wow… they are good. Big events like that don’t just happen overnight; I don’t know where we’d be without Sheila Greifhahn, Barbara Hage, and Annette Buys from our staff who work so hard on all of our special events for Old St. Pat’s. To all of our supporters, volunteers, singers, and staff, I offer a big thanks to you. “Catholic March Madness” continues as we get closer to Holy Week. I hope you’ll plan on joining us for Jack Shea’s Lenten Evening of Reflection on Wednesday March 24 and also Fr. John Cusick’s Adult Appreciation of the Passion on Sunday, March 28. We also hope you definitely plan on being with us for the extraordinary Liturgies of Holy Week. If you haven’t signed up for one of the Holy Thursday Mass and Dinners, make sure you do it today! On occasion, in this publication, you will see a “gentle” appeal regarding the church and anything we can do to prevent unnecessary damages. Did you know: ➢ spilled beverages stain the carpet and marble floor? ➢ dropped food can be ground into the carpet and some of that food, especially raisins, can never be completely removed? ➢ keys, pens, and metal toys have scarred many of the pews, and these pews will have to be removed, restored, and reinstalled? It is important that we know the consequences if we do not care for this magnificent church. Please help us preserve the beauty of this grand church for generations to come. A WAKENINGS LENTEN TRANSFORMATION BY KEARA COUGHLIN Year after year, as Catholics, we take up this season of Lent: some of us with apathy, some with near-dread, and some with excitement at the opportunity to “work on” the things in our lives and in our hearts that could use a little rearranging or reshaping. The idea of a Lenten “fast” is to give ourselves the opportunity to look at our priorities and “get back to the essentials” — the things that most deserve our attention, our energy, and our compassion. A side-effect of these Lenten practices is we might start to believe we can conquer all our bad habits, and we might be under the impression our woundedness or imperfections can be improved or “fixed” … and all in 40 days! The problem is we have it all backwards: Lent is not primarily for us to see what we can accomplish, but rather how we might cooperate with what God hopes to do in us. Keara Coughlin The words of the great Jesuit philosopher, geologist, poet, and priest, Pierre Teihard de Chardin, are a beautiful reminder to us: “Above all, trust in the slow work of God. We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay. We should like to skip the intermediate stages. We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new. And yet it is the law of all progress that it is made by passing through some stages of instability — and that it may take a very long time. And so I think it is with you; your ideas mature gradually — let them grow, let them shape themselves, without undue haste. Don’t try to force them on, as though you could be today what time (that is to say, grace and circumstances acting on your own good will) will make of you tomorrow. Only God could say what this new spirit gradually forming within you will be. Give our Lord the benefit of believing that his hand is leading you, and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete.” ~ Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J. Please visit our Web site and the online gift shop at www.oldstpats.org. 3 COMMUNITY FAITH FORMATION Claim the Hurt: A Church Laments Tuesday, March 23 6:30 p.m. An Evening of Reflection to host, contemplate, and honor any hurt, disappointment, alienation, sadness, or estrangement people may be bearing in relationship to the Church. Please join us, and invite anyone for whom you think this may be a relevant or healing experience. To the extent it is true that hurt, disappointment, misunderstanding, loss, sadness, disaffection, and pain are part of any significant relationship that lasts over time, then we can say with some confidence many have experienced these emotions with respect to their relationship with the Church. Richard Rohr says, “simply and profoundly, if you don’t transform your pain you transmit it. In order for pain to be transformed, it has to be acknowledged, recognized, heard, received, honored.” On Tuesday, March 23, we will gather to acknowledge, recognize, hear, receive and honor peoples pain and disappointment in their relationship with the Church. Our deep hope and prayer is this evening will contribute to healing and transformation. John Cusick Beginning with the highly charged drama of the Last Supper, we will trace the actions of Jesus at the Garden of Gethsemane, to his interrogation by the religious and the imperial authorities, and finally through his suffering and death at Golgotha. We also will consider the many and varied reactions of those who witnessed and influenced the events of The Passion including: the disciples, Mary and the soldiers, Judas and Pilate, and the crowds that filled the streets. We invite you to allow this informative and thought provoking presentation to become a part of your preparations for the celebration of the Paschal Triduum. The program is presented free of charge and no advance registration is required. Fr. John Cusick serves as director of The Young Adult Ministry Office for the Archdiocese of Chicago. In addition to his work with young adults throughout the Archdiocese, Fr. Cusick plays an important role in shaping the life of Old St. Patrick’s Church. Those of us who gather at Old St. Patrick's know and appreciate him for his gifts of preaching, leadership, creativity, and compassionate service he so generously shares with us. A Lenten Evening of Reflection Wednesday, March 24 Please join us for a very special and prayerful reflection on the themes of Lent and Holy Week. The evening begins in the church with a Reconciliation Service that includes the opportunity for individual sacramental reconciliation. You are then invited to join us for dinner in the church Jack Shea hall. Following dinner, we are most pleased to welcome renowned author, theologian, and storyteller, Jack Shea as he leads us through new and thought provoking reflections on the Gospels of Holy Week. PATRICK ’ S C HURCH THE SPIRITUAL PRACTICES OF LENT: THE SPIRITUAL PRACTICES OF LENT: FASTING ALMSGIVING The Practice of Fasting… The Practice of Almsgiving… ✦ heightens our awareness of hunger and poverty in the world, ✦ encourages us to examine our relationship with food, ✦ helps loosen our attachments to habits and behaviors that inhibit our growth, ✦ creates “space” in our lives for deepening our relationships with God and neighbors, ✦ prepares us to accept the risks and discipline necessary for change and growth. ✦ provides a measure of relief for those in need, ✦ calls into question the hidden root causes of poverty and suffering, ✦ allows us to express compassion for our brothers and sisters in need, ✦ reminds us that we are stewards of the world’s resources, ✦ guards against indifference, ✦ challenges us to include justice as a criterion for our decision-making, business practices, public policies, spending, and investment choices. Practice Almsgiving by… THE LENTEN FAST ✦ participating in the Outreach Group’s many volunteer service and sharing opportunities, Catholics 14 years and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and on all the Fridays of Lent. ✦ supporting your charities and perhaps choosing a new one to support, ✦ giving of your time to learn more about how we can act to transform oppressive and unjust structures in our society, ✦ giving of your time and talents to work with others to promote social justice in our communities and throughout the world, ✦ responding with grace and generosity to requests for help and care. Catholics who are 18 but not yet 60 years of age, in addition to abstaining from meat, fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are fasting may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but we refrain from eating solid foods between meals. Practice Fasting by... For these forty days, together with Christians throughout the world, together with the many generations of Christians who have come before us, we will put our trust in the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. We will call upon each other for courage and companionship. Volunteers Needed for "Breakfast with the Bunny" Saturday, March 27 Marillac House Once again, the Connections group is hosting the much awaited “Breakfast with the Bunny“ from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 27 at the Marillac Social Center. The Center focuses on strengthening and empowering children and families on Chicago's West Side, and concentrates on early childhood education, teen mentoring, family support services, and assistance to the elderly. The Marillac Social Center is located at 212 S. Francisco Avenue, Chicago. “Breakfast with the Bunny” provides needy families and their children with a traditional Easter breakfast, egg hunt, egg coloring experience, and a visit from the "real" Easter Bunny. Twenty volunteers are needed to make 80 Easter baskets for the children, and assist with various activities. Each volunteer is asked to bring a small Easter basket and "goodies" such as candy, chocolate eggs, and chocolate bunnies to fill the baskets. Volunteering for this event is truly a rewarding experience. Bring your smile and laughter to children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to celebrate Easter’s traditions. CONNECTIONS Connections Spruces Up Homeless Shelter On Sunday, Feb. 21, Connections members met at a homeless shelter in Humboldt Park to remodel a small apartment for a mother and several children. Members painted, replaced an oven and stove, as well as replaced a sink and vanity in the bathroom. In the main community area, sinks and fixtures were replaced in the bathroom, and extra shelves were hung in the community kitchen. Upon stopping back in the evening to pick-up some supplies, project organizer, Jim Otto, was thanked by residents and kitchen workers for the improved bathrooms and kitchen space. Special thanks are extended to Jim Otto and Pete Ferrentino for organizing the effort, and to all the Connections’ members relax after a hard day’s work at the participants who generously donated their time and talents. C OMMUNITY FAITH F ORMATION Someone You Should Know Elizabeth Bish Q. How long have you attended Old St. Pat’s? A. I have been coming to Old St. Pat’s for eight years. Q. Tell us a little about your most recent trip to Ireland for the All Ireland Championships? A. I recently returned from Killarney, Ireland where I danced in The All Ireland Irish Dance Championships and took 10th place out of almost 200 top dancers from all over the world. I will go on to compete at the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland in three weeks! This was a huge achievement for me! Q. What prompted you to choose Irish Dancing? A. When I was little, a lot of my friends were involved in Irish Dancing so I thought it would be fun too. It turned out to be a little bit more than just an activity for me. It turned out to be a sport I have come to love. Q. What is the most fun aspect of Irish Dancing for you? A. Mostly it's getting to see my friends every day, and always having a good time with them. It's also really neat to become friends with people who don't even live in your country! Q. What is the most difficult aspect of Irish Dancing for you? A. Because I spend most of my time dancing, I don't get to do a lot of other activities with my school friends. Sometimes it's hard to miss out on these activities. Q. Tell us about your family? A. There are seven people in my family: my mom and dad; my sisters Emily and Grace, and my brothers Andrew and Matthew — plus Tiger, our cat. Emily is 15 and goes to Whitney Young High School. She's in the choir and loves opera. Grace is 10 and is in fourth-grade at Sacred Heart. She enjoys playing soccer and basketball. Her twin brother, Andrew, also is in fourth-grade at Sacred Heart. He plays many sports such as basketball, soccer, and baseball. Matthew is six, and is in kindergarten at Sacred Heart. He is the youngest in the family and likes to play many outdoor sports and activities such as soccer and T-ball. Q. Do you have a favorite anecdote or short story about your Irish Dancing competitions? A. It's always been a goal of mine to do well in Ireland (I have done well in the USA, but not great overseas), and I have finally accomplished that goal. This year, I have worked really hard and I'm glad it payed off. Taking top ten overseas is wonderful, and I keep working hard so I will hopefully do well at the World Championships later this month! Q. Where do you attend school, and what grade are you in? A. I go to Sacred Heart Schools, and I am in seventh-grade. Q. Do you have any other observations and comments? A. I have been dancing for more than nine years, and I still love it. I have gone to two different dance schools, and now currently attend The Mulhern School of Irish Dance. The classes are in Westmont, Illinois, so it takes a while to get there. The classes are great, and my teachers, Ms. Eileen and Ms. Coleen, have really helped me accomplish my goals. At Communion, please identify yourself to the presider as the person to receive the low-gluten host. Family Choir Braille and large print worship aids are available for your convenience. Inspired by Old St. Pat’s Outreach, S.P.O.K.E.S. was formed to introduce our children to outreach projects in which they can feel they have made a difference to others. We do have a small lift, without stairs, for access to the church and hall. The entrance is on Des Plaines Street, through the gate just north of the main church steps. Moms And Tots Group If you need a hearing device, please ask an usher. A sign language interpreter will be available at the 5 p.m. Mass every Sunday. Please sit in the second or third pews on the Joseph side of the altar if you would like to utilize this service. EXIT In case of an emergency, please exit the church through the three sets of double doors located in the rear of the church or by the exit door located behind the Altar screen. Friday Jer 20:10-13/ Jn 10:31-42 Saturday Ez 37:21-28/ Jn 11:45-56 Saint of the Week Optional memorial of Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo (bishop, 1536 - 1606) Even though he’s not wellknown in the United States, St. Toribio was one of the first canonized saints of the Western Hemisphere. He was devoted from a young age, but had no plans to become a priest. He was a successful student, and became a professor of law at the University of Salamanca. In February 1571, although he was still a layman, King Philip II appointed him the chief judge of the ecclesiastical court of the Inquisition at Granada. In 1580, when the authorities required an archbishop of strong character to work to convert the Peruvians of Lima, they selected Toribio. He was horrified by this decision, and protested the appointment. He was overruled, however, was ordained a priest, consecrated bishop, and sent across the Atlantic to Lima, Peru. Toribio had been chosen because conditions in Peru were very grave. The Spanish conquerors were so eager to make themselves rich that they had forced the Peruvian people into slavery to work in gold mines. Upon his arrival, he was confronted with an enormous diocese of 18,000 square-miles and came into immediate conflict with the Spanish authorities in their mistreatment of the native population. Undaunted, he began his work, traversing his entire diocese three times, generally on foot because there were no roads. He was defenseless, often alone, and was exposed to dangerous rainstorms, deserts, wild beasts, tropical heat, and fevers. All his life Toribio studied native languages so that he could teach the people and understand their situations. He baptized and confirmed nearly a million souls, some of whom included Saint Rose of Lima, Saint Francis Solanus, Saint Martin de Porres, and Saint John Massias. He founded many churches, religious houses, and hospitals, and, in 1591, founded the first American seminary in Lima. He also assembled 13 diocesan synods. He was traveling when he became fatally ill at age 68. He asked to be carried into the nearest town so that he could receive the Eucharist, and gave away everything he owned to the poor before he died.
