However, few former players or coaches of the Duncanville school system have impacted the sports program, as has Bill Cochran. As a parent of children in Duncanville schools, he attended all Duncanville Panther football games. He was one of the passengers on the fondly remembered train to Stephenville that carried fans and students to a Panther high school game. Ask anyone from the 1966 to 1976 era if they remember “Aba‐Daba‐Doo” being yelled from the football stands. That yell came from Bill Cochran, and it came to represent “pure fan love” decades before the term “super fan” came into existence. In the late 60’s and early 70’s he served on the Duncanville school board for eight years. One of the terms he served as president of that board. His love for the community and the schools was his motivation to take on such a responsibility‐laden and time‐consuming role. During his terms he was a proponent of athletics. He knew how athletic endeavors could serve as a training ground for life, and for some, sports provided a lifeboat in the sea of a tumultuous home‐life. Bill Cochran had worked with young boys in the RA organization of the First Baptist Church. He used sports to keep the boys interested in continuing to attend the RA meetings. Because of their 10 interest in sports the boys were exposed to a program that would benefit them and help them cope not only as young boys but also in their futures. Many of those boys have come as men to tell “Big Bill” how their involvement had helped them through tough family times. They also would always talk and rehash all the stories of their church league baseball games. Two brothers on his church team went on to play on Duncanville’ first state championship baseball team. One boy became a high school pole vaulter, went to school at A&M and returned to serve his community as a dentist. Bill Cochran had experienced the importance of having sports available to young people, believing that team experiences shaped character and kept them in school. So he continued to support all athletics when he was on the school board. As a senior citizen, he became an employee of Duncanville ISD as a custodian, working at Daniel, the Ninth Grade School, and the high school. He performed not only custodial duties, but would go above and beyond what was expected. The coaches knew they could come to him and find an eager pair of hands to help them with any task. If a problem arose with the gym, Bill Cochran could be counted on to help find a solution. When working on football stadium and natatorium upkeep, he cut no corners, treating the facilities in the same way he would expect someone to take care of his own home. Those he came across as he performed his job—both coaches and students—knew they had a loyal fan in Bill Cochran. But more than that, they knew he cared about them beyond the arena of sports. Bill Cochran is also a BIG baseball fan. Before the new stadium was built his spot was right by the dugout. His chair would be pulled up to the fence in the corner by the dugout wall. He wanted to be close to the action and close to the players so he could make a personal connection. He knew each player’s name and would use it when offering encouragement. The boys came to expect his comments, some telling him he had to repeat the same line to “give them luck.” He was a fan who not only supported by cheering but by cooking. Many an evening he could be found cooking hamburgers, hot links and hot dogs behind the Duncanville Baseball Boosters’ big smoky grill. He helped the boosters by finding wood to fuel the grill. As he drove through town, he would keep a harp eye out for wood. If anyone was clearing a lot or cleaning up brush, chances are Bill Cochran could be found asking if he could haul the wood to the field to be used in the cooker. So although he is not a formed player, nor a coach, he has left a BIG, positive mark on Duncanville’s athletic program. His impact did not span just a few season. He has left a lifetime of encouragement and love as his personal contribution to Duncanville athletics. She maintains a good balance between coaching her athletes and teaching her English students the skills they need in order to be successful. He went to school board meetings and the chamber of commerce asking for permission to build the new stadium, not for funding it. He got Tom Grieve, the Texas Rangers announcer, to narrate a video for marketing and advertising for the boosters to help raise money for a new stadium. Knowing that the district had to wait for a bond to pass by voters, which could take years, he took it upon himself to get the money raised so that the boosters could fund it themselves. His number one priority was that the players should be playing in a stadium that represented the high caliber of a program that Duncanville Baseball offers. His commitment to excellence has now provided the Duncanville community and school district to have what is now known as “Panther Field” –home of the Duncanville Baseball Teams. Visitors to our new stadium are always impressed by the quality of the facility and question how we even have such a nice baseball stadium. Our answer to them is Bill Fahey is why we have what we have. So much so that Baseball America, a national magazine, ranked the Duncanville Panther Baseball Stadium as the 5th Best High School Ballpark Facility in the nation. He settles for nothing but the best. There is no one more deserving than Bill Fahey to be recognized as an inaugural inductee into the Duncanville ISD Athletic Hall of Honor. He’s been the coach, the teacher, the fan, and booster club member who has never been paid for any of his work, nor will he ever accept payment. The only payment he will seize is watching the enjoyment on an athlete’s face or the excitement that a parent has just for the love of the game. He’s dedicated to the Duncanville community and school district, and strives to be more than just a role model, but a lifelong friend. Leroy fits every category: great athlete, coach, teacher and fan. Leroy started his career as an athlete during high school. He was one of the finest athletes of his time for Duncanville High School. He was a three‐year letterman (1965, 1966, and 1967) in football and also played baseball and track. He was tri‐captain in football in 1967‐68 and this same year was named defensive guard to the first All‐District Team. During his senior year he was heavily recruited by the University of Houston and Oklahoma. He accepted a full scholarship to the University of Houston where he was red shirted and played for five years. He finished his playing career as the starting center for the University. After his graduation from the University of Houston in 1972, Leroy was recruited by Coach Bill Savage to become a Duncanville football coach. Leroy was the first former Duncanville ISD football player to be asked to come back to his home school district to specifically coach football. Leroy saw this as a great honor and poured his heart into the Duncanville High School athletic program. As well as being a football coach, he coached baseball and golf, taught health and outdoor education. In 73‐74 he coached freshmen football, golf, and became involved in Duncanville’s baseball program becoming the assistant varsity high school baseball coach and head J.V. baseball coach. In 74‐75 as the head ninth grade football coach, he took the team to a 10‐0 winning season. As the assistant varsity baseball coach he had the privilege of being a member of the coaching staff that brought home the first state championship in baseball. 22 As a testament to the impact that Leroy has on young lives, the players asked him to hold the trophy when it was presented on the field. The team had great respect for him as a former Duncanville baseball player. They saw his passion, for not only the game, but also for Duncanville High School and its students. Having the opportunity to play a part in the special time of Duncanville sports’ history was the highlight of his coaching career. He continued as a high school assistant varsity football coach from 1975‐1979. Leroy was a teacher and a coach for Duncanville ISD for 8 years. After that he became a high school administrator and continued to serve for 21 years. Being an assistant principal at the high school allowed him to assist in all the sports. Players knew that he supported them and often sought his advice when being recruited to universities and colleges. Leroy took an active part in the lives of all athletes. When the Duncanville Panthers won the State Football Championship in the 1998‐99 season, Leroy was there to see it. He was asked to stand on the sideline but chose to sit in the stands. He had waited a lifetime to see the Panthers win a state football championship. Watching the Duncanville Panthers win that championship in the Astrodome was especially meaningful for him. It had been this same Panther football program that had given him the chance to play on that field years ago and experience success. It remains a joy for him when former players come up and call him “coach”. He feels honored when a senior citizen of the community tells him how much they enjoyed watching him back in the 1960s. Many of them can still recall plays he made, and each remembers him as an outstanding athlete. In 2002 the high school teachers and administrators honored him with a championship ring for his contribution in winning the first state baseball championship. Unlike today, the coaching staff’s assistant is acknowledged with a ring. In the 1970’s only the head coach was recognized. Because of Leroy’s constant effort and support for the baseball program, the teachers decided to surprise him with this honor. It was a special moment for him, and he was greatly appreciative. For nearly 40 years, Leroy Fisher has been passionate about the Duncanville athletic program. He will be the first to say that it was the Duncanville athletic program that molded him into the person that he is today. It was this program that helped provide him with the financial means to continue his education. Giving back to this program has been a life‐long mission of love toward his community. He carries with him the winning spirit of Duncanville. I don’t think that there has been a greater fan and supporter than our Tot! He’s always willing to lend a helping hand – even if in only an “advisory” role when volunteer workdays are scheduled. I’ve always believed in showing others our love, thanks, and appreciation while they are alive and can enjoy the honor, applause, and congratulations from others. Besides his involvement in DHS Baseball, Tot is active in his church. A few years ago, he was inducted into (I’m not sure the exact title) a Softball (or Softball Coaches) Hall of Fame. Along with this accomplishment, there were many individual honors from various All‐ Tournament teams to District through State level recognition; however their focus was always that of the team’s accomplishments. She ran track and played basketball at Duncanville High School for 4 years. In 1976 she was on the first Duncanville girls’ team to win 1st place in the State Tournament. Renee' was selected on the All‐Tournament team and also All‐State that year and All‐State again in 1977. Renee' was also selected to play in the Texas North‐South All Star game and the Texas‐Oklahoma All Star game. Renee' played college basketball on a scholarship for two years at South Plains Jr. College in Levelland, Texas. After graduating from South Plains she attended Sam Houston State University on a softball scholarship. While At Sam Houston she played centerfield and helped lead her team to two National Championships in a row her Junior and senior years and was named All‐American her senior year. Renee' eventually returned to Reed Jr. High where she taught science and was a very successful basketball coach.
