Holidays 2014
Scissor Art Exhibit at Glen Foerd
This holiday season Glen Foerd presents the
exhibition, Shear Beauty: The Paper Cut Artistry of
Margaretha von Glehn Luther. Ms. Von Glehn
Luther (1909 - 2001) and her husband, Fred,
lived at Glen Foerd from 1970 to 1978. He
worked as a gardener and caretaker when the
estate was a retreat operated by the Lutheran
Church. The exhibition will highlight
Margaretha’s Christmas-related works, as well
as botanicals and fanciful dragons. With tiny
scissors and scraps of paper, she created paper
cut art so delicate and intricate it can easily be
mistaken as pen and ink drawings.
While living at Glen Foerd’s Cottage, Margaretha created an illuminated
manuscript of the Christmas story from the King James Bible. This exquisite
work will be displayed along with a 7-foot dowelled Christmas tree adorned
with beautifully carved wooden ornaments. Fred Luther, a fine wood carver,
created the ornaments which were then painted by his wife.
A members-only opening reception will be held on Saturday November 29th
from 1 to 3 p.m. The reception will be followed by a holiday concert that is
open to the public.

complete Assessment is available for download on the home page of Glen

The complex was erected between 1896 and 1903. The grand greenhouses had
a T-plan configuration. Today’s Garden House operated as a headhouse and

Greetings from the Director

Glen Foerd continues to gain recognition as a Philadelphia
treasure. Your support in time, treasure and talent have made
this past year’s achievements possible. As a nonprofit
organization, Glen Foerd relies on individual contributions to
fulfill its mission. We’d like to invite you to consider helping
us by making a gift to the Annual Appeal.

The mission of Glen Foerd on the Delaware is to
connect visitors to the legacy of Glen Foerd through
programs in the arts, nature and history and to
preserve and protect the landscape, buildings and
collections for the enjoyment and enrichment of the
community and future generations.
Contributions from last year’s Annual Appeal helped us:
 Repair, replace and paint deteriorated woodwork on the
mansion’s porch and servant’s wing
 Expand mansion tour hours to Friday, Saturday and
Sunday
 Hire a research consultant to conduct a Cultural
Landscape Assessment, the first step in the restoration of
our historic landscape
Your support this year will help us:
 Improve and begin restoring Glen Foerd’s historic
landscape
 Continue to make improvements to the mansion’s exterior
and replace the Gatehouse roof
 Introduce programs that highlight the natural beauty of
Glen Foerd, such as Firefly Family Fun and Astronomy
Night
Glen Foerd’s achievements this past year include a grant from
Alpha Delta Kappa, which enhances the arts program at the
public arts high school and our community partner, The Arts
Academy at Benjamin Rush. The addition of Glen Foerd to
the Historic American Landscape Survey, which is a database
of historic landscapes maintained by the Library of Congress.
Glen Foerd is one of 24 such landscapes in Pennsylvania.
Perhaps the achievement with the longest lasting impact is
funding from the city for the initial phase of a master site
plan.
We need the support of our members and friends to
continue our progress at Glen Foerd and to preserve this
historic treasure. You will be receiving an Annual Appeal
letter within the next few weeks. Please consider participating
this year – we can’t do it without you!

History Uncovered

held tools and a potting room with a potting bench. The complex extended from the show house, which is the
front entrance to the complex, back to a circular garden element. The circular garden, which currently has
Japanese maples, hostas and daffodils, remains but is in need of restoration.
The original plans for the interior of the complex were pieced together because they were in very poor
condition. The plans revealed a complex, which in addition to the central show house, included a “stove house”
for the cultivation of exotics, rose and carnation houses for cut flowers, as well as sections for African violets,
ferns, and orchids. Grapes, lettuce, and vegetables grew year round in hot and cold vineries.
The greenhouses were removed around 1926 leaving only the headhouse which is today’s Garden House. A
dogwood allee was created on the location of the showhouse section of the complex. The allee remains today. It
extends from the north side of the Garden House and terminates with two stone benches flanking a central
stone platform and pedestal. This area is enclosed by a semi-circle of evergreens. The pedestal once held a statue
which is currently in storage. After the greenhouses were removed the headhouse was converted to a children’s
playhouse for Florence Foerderer Tonner’s two girls.
Research consultant, Dr. Emily Cooperman, authored the report. The project was made possible through a grant
from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and individual contributions.
Volunteer Spotlight
The next time you visit the mansion take a look at our new piano cover. It is absolutely beautiful and does
justice to such a magnificent instrument. The new cover is just one example of the many good ways our
volunteers share their special talents. Glen Foerd member and volunteer, Shirley MacClay, an accomplished
seamstress with an at home business, offered to make us a much needed cover. The gold tones in the paisley are
matched by elaborate fringe with beading. In addition to the piano cover, she made new coverings for our sun
porch bench cushions. Thank you Shirley for making Glen Foerd beautiful!
Coming Home
Sunday was reserved for visits to grandmother’s house, recalls Florence Foerderer
Tonner’s two granddaughters, Carol Hays Dunn and Marnie McFarland. They
remember the beautiful gardens and in particular the lily pond, which Marnie once
accidentally fell into.
It was our distinct pleasure to welcome some of Florence’s grandchildren, great
grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and her grand nephew back to Glen Foerd.
October’s Garden Gala posthumously honored Florence for her commitment to
preserving Glen Foerd for future generations. The grandchildren felt their
grandmother would be pleased with how her vision is being carried out.

In Search Of…
A twenty foot Christmas tree! Shouldn’t a mansion have
an outsized Christmas tree decorating its lawn? We think
so. The cost of a tree that size gave us a bit of sticker
shock. We felt there was no harm in putting a shout out to
Glen Foerd friends. Someone just may have the perfect
tree. If you do, contact the office at 215-632-5330, or email
