Toot your own horn. In our travels to and from our National muster we
chatted with lots of folks about the love of the RVing lifestyle. Most were
veterans, so I would eventually steer the conversation to SMART. I discussed what SMART is and why they should join. Like you, I handed out
numerous SMART applications. In two cases, I actually got them to complete a SMART application and furnish me a check so that I could mail in
their application. In both cases, the following morning I was asked to return their checks or tear them up. Why - why? Travelers these days are
more computer savvy and like to research organizations they intend to
join. Apparently, when they looked at our web page and links to our chapters they were disappointed in what they saw (or didn't see). We have a great team that is
making strides on improving information about SMART to the public. Please read the article
in this "Traveler" on the ongoing Website Automation Project. What we need now is information regarding what each chapter is doing - both current and recent - your musters, your
socials, and most important your support for philanthropic organizations. We do a lot of
good things. We are veterans and we support veteran organizations. This is how we are
different than most social RVing organizations and this is what intrigues potential members.
The Traveler and web page are important links to broadcast all of our activities and our love
of the military RVing lifestyle. Let's get the word out! Your President, Jon Katin
Standing Rules of the Club
There has been some confusion in the past within the chapters on who
could vote and hold an office in the chapter. Standing Rule (SR-10-08)) addressed this issue, however continuing questions from chapter members
prompted the National Board of Directors to rewrite and clarify the contents of
the rule. SR-10-08 now reads: “Officers and Voting: Any member in good
standing in the CLUB and their spouse may vote and hold office at the chapter
level in any chapter of which they are a member”.
What this means is that a spouse may hold a chapter office and may vote
in any and all chapter business even if the spouse is not a member (i.e., with a SMART #) of the national Club. Each chapter may address the issue of voting or office-holding eligibility at the chapter
level by provisions in their chapter bylaws.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN’S DESK
THE CONCEPT OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
Part of growing up is taking responsibility for oneself. We start as infants with no personal
responsibility whatsoever—everything that we need done is done for us. As we progress
through the various stages of childhood, we take on more and more responsibility. We learn to
tie our own shoes, clean our own rooms, and turn in our own homework. We learn that responsibility has its rewards—and irresponsibility has other, less-than-desirable effects. In many ways, the difference between a child and an adult is the willingness to take personal responsibility for their actions. We are
responsible for our actions – all of them. We are responsible for our thoughts and behaviour, whether deliberate or unintentional. A responsible person makes mistakes, but when they do, they take responsibility and
make it right.
You are where you are because of who you are. Everything that exists in your life exists because of you, because of your behaviour, words, choices, and actions. Responsibility goes hand in hand with success,
achievement, motivation, happiness and self-actualization. It’s the absolute minimum requirement for the accomplishment of everything you could ever really want in life.
What are the Attributes of a responsible person?
Be accountable. You are always responsible for how you respond.
Stop blaming. When you stop pointing the finger, you have control over yourself.
Acknowledge what happened. Your integrity earns respect.
Accentuate the positive. When you take responsibility for having the life you want, you switch your focus
from what went wrong to what went right. A small shift in focus turns a loser into a winner.
See yourself clearly. Taking responsibility means acknowledging both your weaknesses and strengths.
Say “thank you.” Accept praise graciously.
Larry Shields National Chaplin
PS: if everyone took personal responsibility a lot of problems would go
away

MEET Some of our New Members
Welcome Richard and Brenda Hitt from Florida
They were introduced to SMART, by Don & Sharon Parrish, of Winter Park, FL, while they were both at the Tiffin Service Center in Red
Bay, AL. Several months later they saw a caravan to the Canadian
Maritime Provinces on our website. We decided to join and sign up
for the caravan. We're on the wait list, but hopefully we'll be able to
make the trip. We love to wander in our motorhome with our two
Shelties, Piper and Timmy. Along the way, we enjoy golf, biking, hiking and discovering new places and meeting new people. We also
snow ski, scuba dive and travel internationally.
Welcome to Mary Johnson spouse of Terrence
Johnson SMART member # 13807. Mary enjoys
making jewelry, doing crafts with her grandchildren. She also loves camping and traveling with
her husband.
Al Haynes done it

Twelve Rebel rigs enjoyed a great time
attending the 2015 SMART National Muster at
the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry,
GA; they included: Cosi & Kathy Baccomo,
Charlie & Mary Bennett, John & Dorothy Bradberry, Jerry & Martha Cole, Jim & Royleen
Gardner, Robyn Hamlington & Cork Phillips,
Keith Hardman, John & Selma Horton, Dave
& Hilda Lewis, Winston & Joyce Posey, Bruce
& Liz Vance, Bill & Joyce Ward. Also, friends
of the Posey's joined us: Jim ("Barney") &
Nancy Barnes, and Frank Hof & Marlene Wolski; Barney is a member of the Great Lakes
Chapter and Frank is considering joining the
Rebels. Don & Janet Zimmerman came for a
afternoon visit with us, and Webmaster Joel
Myers came to Perry one afternoon to attend
a seminar on "SMART Websites, A Vision for
the Future". The vision is to standardize all
Chapter and Regional websites and also the
National SMART website.
Our Chapter served dinner on Saturday to just
under 200 rigs - we had enough men to volunteer to serve, so we gave the women a much
deserved evening off! And we hosted the
Holeyboard Tournament, led by Bruce Vance.
2 of the 3 top spots in the tournament were
won by Rebels; Liz Vance was the winner and
Mary Bennett came in third.
Remember to bring all your auction items to
our next muster in November at Twin Oaks
Park, Hoboken, GA. Also remember that there
will be a huge "yard sale" event hosted by
Twin Oaks Park on Saturday, 14 NOV before
our muster begins on Monday, 16 NOV
(departure date is Friday, 20 NOV), so plan to
arrive before or after Saturday to avoid arriving with the event crowd. Reservations are not
required by Twin Oaks Park, but please call
the muster hosts - James Harvey & Hellen
Crutchfield - to let them know you are coming
for planning, food purchases, etc. Hope to see
you there! Charlie Bennett President
ARKANSAS HOGS MUSTER 7-12 OCTOBER 2015,
Held at Old Post Park, US Army Corps of Engineer
Park, Russellville, AR. The Muster was hosted by Ann
Lowry. We had nine members attend and four guest.
The guest was Don and Sue Reed, & mother-in-law,
and Nora Lee Perkins. Don and Sue have been recruited to SMART by Richard and Mary Engels and
soon to be Hog members. We welcome them and
look forward to many musters with them. The
weather was perfect for the five day muster. The
Hogs had a busy five days. Day 1 we had a meet and
greet attitude adjustment time. Day 2 we started
early with a pontoon boat ride by a, Park Ranger, at
Lake Darnell State Park. On our boat ride we saw a
Bald Eagle’s nest and two immature bald eagles soaring in the sky and landing in the trees. It was a great
boat trip, the weather was sunny and the water nice
and calm, couldn’t have ask for a better trip. That
evening we had our group dinner, at Brown’s Catfish
Restaurant. If you are ever in Russellville, AR we
highly recommend the restaurant. Day 3 we carpooled to Altus, AR, wine country. We had a good
time tasting the different wines at five different wineries. We topped the wine tour with lunch at a restaurant in Altus. That evening we had a cookout provided by Richard and Mary Engels. The hot dogs and
burgers were great and everyone enjoyed the evening with friends. Day 4 Wiederkehr Wine Festival
was held in the wine country and some hogs and
their guest attended. The others enjoyed Tanya
Tucker Birthday Bash with a concert that evening.
Tanya had her 57th birthday and Russellville celebrated it with flair. Hot Air Balloon rides, daytime entertainment, and a Tanya Tucker look-a-like contest.
They also had a Tanya Tucker dinner where you
could get to meet her, with the concert later. Several Hogs attended the concert. At the campground
we had an Asian dinner provided by our guest Don
and Sue Reed. What a great meal and enjoyed visiting with everyone. Day 5 we held our Chapter
meeting and later carpooled to Mtn. Nebo State Park
were we had a picnic and then enjoyed the sunset.
What a view. Back at the campground we had a
campfire and roasted some s’mores.
The next morning we said our good byes and see you
at Branson, from 5-12 November for Veterans week.
We are mustering with other chapters from the Midwest.
9
From the SMART Nomads Chapter.
What a great time we had at the national Muster this
year. The Nomads start by having a premuster 3 or 4
days before the National even begins. This year it was
right across the street from the Ga Fair grounds so our
members were able to enjoy the local color and attend
the board of directors meeting prior to the start of the
National Muster.
During the muster the full-timers selected to merge
with the Nomads to form one large chapter. The Nomads chapter is now 120 members in 63 rigs strong!
This year at the national we have the pleasure of receiving 8 new members in the Nomad Chapter. We
welcome them with open arms. James & Sandra Gates,
Paul & Lisa Mitchell, Don & Carol Vardell, and Donna
Sullivan & Lowell Hilty.
Our 4 day post muster was a big Hit with the members
that could attend, we traveled to Americus Ga and
toured the Habitat for Humanity headquarters as well
as enjoying time with the chapter membership.
For those that enjoy the company of others please feel
free to look into joining our chapter.
Please feel free to contact myself any time for more
information or look for our information on the new
National website.
Nomads
Nomad (noun) wanderer in search of food. The
Nomads are an At-Large chapter, open to all
SMART members. We are a social group of fun
(and food) lovers rather than a geographically defined or common interest chapter.
The FL Buccaneers began their
2015/2016 muster season with 24 rigs
attending the National Muster at Perry GA.
What a great time and lots of credit is due
Steve and Sarah Colt and the entire muster staff for a great job! We are now preparing for our next muster – the annual
Veteran’s Day muster held in Bushnell FL, a
joint muster this year with the FL Roadrunners. On Veteran’s Day, we join in on the
ceremony at the FL National Cemetery at
Bushnell. Lots of activities are planned for
the muster including a golf outing, shopping at the renowned Webster Flea Market, and a guided tour of the Dade Battlefield which saw the largest casualty count
for US forces in the longest war against
Native Americans in our history. This is a
great muster and we would like to invite
anyone near to central Florida to come
join us in Bushnell, 8 – 12 Nov. Information
is at our website www.smartbucs.org, especially on the Newsletter link for October
2015. Make reservations with the
campground and then let Jeff Stephens
know that you will be attending
([email protected])
Nomads get together at a "pre-muster" just before
the annual National Muster and at a "post-muster"
after the National Muster. We are famous for our
4 pm Attitude adjustment during these gettogethers. Between our National-associated gettogethers, we look up other members during our
travels. These "mini-musters" range from lunch to
spending time together in a campground. Some
are more formal gatherings of as many as are in
the area!
Nomads keep in touch by a quarterly newsletter, a
website, email, and other e means. Our dues are
a big $5 per year.

Alamo SMARTs annual fall muster at the Oakwood RV Resort in Fredricksburg, TX, 8-11
Oct, was attended by nineteen rigs, including SouthMidwest Regional Director Roger Meyer and
wife Kaye. After arrival and setup on Thursday, the afternoon was spent “gripping and grinning” with
old friends, meeting new ones and enjoying the area. Later in the evening we carpooled to Hondos
on Main in town for supper then back to the rally hall for games and gab.
Red Shirt Friday began with breakfast served by our hosts Mary and Richard Palmer, assisted by
Liz and Joe Leal. Free time for the rest of the day to enjoy the sights of Fredricksburg including
Wildseed Wildflower Farm, National Museum of the Pacific War and numerous wineries in the area. The evening meal was typically Texan with fajitas, rice, beans and all the trimmings. We then
carpooled to the RockBox Theater in town, a local and regional favorite featuring great talent. Our
entertainment this evening was music from the 50s and 60s (yeah, we’re that old!) with a super band and the singing group M & M and the Double Ds (form your own picture). Several of our
group, including Muster Master Willie Pollard, “Stan the Man” Powers, Shirley Holscher, Yolanda
Powers, to name a few, were coaxed/coerced/dragged on stage to perform the “Twist” or attempt to
hoolahoop. Me thinks there were sore hips on Saturday…..
Saturday began with another great breakfast by Kathy and Ernie Bader and Carol and Ralph
Detwiler, followed by our chapter meeting. Regional Director Roger Meyer updated us regarding
events which occurred at the recent National muster. World War II veteran Gene Bridge closed the
meeting leading us with his deep voice rendition of “God Bless America”. Free time again until 4:00
PM when we met to carpool to nearby Stonewall, TX for the annual Stonewall Volunteer Fire Dept
fish fry. We have enjoyed this event for several years – all the fish, fries, beans, slaw, condiments,
desserts and beer you can consume for a donation to the fire dept. Those who didn’t stuff themselves managed to get back to the rally hall for games and assist with cleanup for departure on Sunday.
Through the generosity of our members purchasing 50/50 tickets during this muster, we were able
to reach another $1000.00 to donate to the Warrior and Family Support Center at Ft Sam Houston,
TX
Looking forward now to our annual Christmas party on 13 December. If you’re in San Antonio, you’re welcome to join us!
Steve Spear/9760 Alamo Secretary
The North Carolina ‘Tarheels’ support community projects wherever we may muster in the state.
Our October Muster gave us the opportunity to provide a check for $154.00 to the Eagles Wings Food Pantry of Washington, N.C. on October 13th. (Pictured are Shirley Ensley Tarheel Treasurer, Ann-Marie Montague Executive Director of Eagles Wings, Bunny La Monte Tarheel Secretary & News Letter Manager, and Tyler Richman
Eagles Wings Warehouse Manager).
In 2014 Eagles Wings served 3,796 individuals in need. They
deliver food to 80 home-bound clients each month and over
200 families in Beauford County on the 4th Saturday of each
month. 86% of the families served in the county are at or below the national poverty level.
Every SMART Chapter out there has the opportunity to support some needy cause. I strongly encourage you to do just
that!!!

Mixed Foursome Wins DUFFERS 2015 TOURNAMENT
Americus, Georgia’s Brickyard Plantation
Hosts Tournament and Practice Rounds
The team of Bo and Karen DeBlieux and Carl and Gwen Hopper scored 6 under par to win the 2015
SMART DUFFERS National Golf Tournament by a scorecard playoff September 17 at The Brickyard Plantation Golf Course and RV Park in Americus, Georgia.
Finishing in second place, also with 6 under par, was Craig Christen, Paul Moniz, Leon Smith and Jack
Fritz. At 5 under in third place were Eric Hilty, John Barry, Jeff Stephens, and Mike Schmitz.
Jeff Stephens, the only contestant to sink a putt in the putting contest, won for the second consecutive year. He sunk two of his three putts. NO ONE else made more than one putt!
Longest drive honors went to Craig Christen.
Twenty golfers paid tournament costs of $30 and purchased mulligans for $10 and paid a $5 putting
contest entry fee enabling the Duffers to donate $255 to this year’s Veteran charity, The Fisher House at
Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS. Fisher Houses provides accommodations for patients and their families
receiving health care at base hospitals.
Players enjoyed lunch after the tournament. Winners were announced during the national muster
activities. Each winning foursome was given golf balls.
All players were given a door prize of a $25 gift card from Camping World of Calera, Alabama, thanks
to Herb Whitfield.
New officers were elected at the Duffers’ annual meeting. Carl Hopper moved into the Presidency;
Bo DeBlieuxe vice-president; Mark Avey - Secretary; Treasurer and Tournament Chairman is Charley LeBlanc. Next year’s tournament will be held in Amana, Iowa at the SMART National Muster.
Many thanks for all the generous and friendly support of the hosts course owners, Debra Sikes and
her family and staff. Play was on two 9-hole courses, one a links style layout. Weather was good.
The RV park featured full 50A hook-ups with on-site sewer, all large, level, pull-thru sites, green
grass and beautiful old trees. The
meetinghouse and grounds were very
pleasant and accommodating, as well
as the golf clubhouse. The old plantation was a very good venue, despite it
being gnat included t season!
The Duffers, along with spouses, for the first time, mustered several
days before the tournament to enjoy
golf, fellowship, and sightseeing, which
included visiting the childhood home
of President Jimmy Carter in nearby
Plains, Georgia. The group will try to
organize a similar pre-tournament
muster and “official” practice round
before next year’s tournament.

Hugs & Kisses – This is the pattern chosen by the SMART quilters for the 2016 Raffle Quilt at the National
Muster in Amana, Iowa. Design by Sue Cox as found on About Quilting.com. We will be making 8 ½ inch size
blocks. The SMART quilters are a ‘subcommittee’ under the National Spouse Advisory Committee. All quilters
and sewing enthusiasts are encouraged to assist with this project. Funds raised from this project are donated
to a Veterans Service organization under the Spouse Advisory Committee Veterans Service projects.
To make an 80 x 88 size quilt, it will require at least 110 of the 8 ½ ‘unfinished’ blocks.
Use small prints in any color for the 8 ½ block that you start with. Use a neutral (or light tone on tone not
white) color for the 4 ½ in block that you place diagonally on opposite corners of the 8 ½ block. Make sure
the block you end up with measures 8 ½ inches!
Please make at least 10 – 12 of these blocks to send so there will be enough to make the quilt!
Please mail NO LATER THAN June 1, 2016 to Harriet Crabtree, 1608 13th Avenue, Greeley, CO 80631

Are you a member of a SMART Chapter?
If not, it’s a great way to make new friends, enjoy seeing old ones, and receiving
and giving support to fellow military veterans and their families. If you are already an
active member, then you know the benefits and can help spread the word. If not, take
a few minutes to learn a little about what a chapter has to offer.
Chapters are the social arm of our club and the best way to keep the family feeling so important to all of us. Chapter membership is an extension of the best part of
the military lifestyle with the close knit feeling veterans and their families only know.
There are 48 chapters in just about every state and many meet four or five times a
year to hold musters where members camp together. Activities include sightseeing,
playing both indoor and outdoor games, dining out, having pot luck dinners, and just
having a good time together enjoying the camaraderie no other group can enjoy. In
addition, chapters support other veterans by visiting VA hospitals, making items in
support of Sew Much Comfort http://www.sewmuchcomfort.org/ and participating in
ceremonies on Veterans Day and Wreaths Across America at national cemeteries.
Musters are entertaining, enjoyable, exciting, and all chapters welcome all
SMART members or those eligible to join SMART to visit to see what is happening
with no pressure to join. Some chapters also get together for dinner or lunch out to
socialize, especially when the weather is not real inviting. First and foremost are the
many years of fellowship and friendship long time members enjoy. Keeping in touch
with veteran friends and their spouses is an important aspect of chapter membership.
Chapters give you support when you just do not feel like getting out camping. Another
benefit is you can join more than one chapter and many do just that!
The muster calendar on the SMART website lists all the planned chapter musters so if there is one in your home area or where you are traveling, call the muster
master to sign-up..it’s just that easy. You can also check out this link which provides a
map http://www.smartchapters.org/ and contact points for all chapters.
If additional assistance is needed to locate a chapter to visit or join, you may
contact the Regional Director for the area you normally camp who will be glad to help.
Make the effort, you won’t regret it!

S*M*A*R*T Website Automation Project
S*M*A*R*T is embarking on a project to reduce workload for HQ personnel as well as
S*M*A*R*T members while at the same time enhancing exchange of information with members while
providing information about S*M*A*R*T to the public. Simply put, this will be accomplished by moving current member information from spreadsheets on stand-alone desktop computers to an automated, secure,
and widely accessible (for read-only information) database system.
The S*M*A*R*T Board of Directors (BOD), and others attended seminars at the National in Perry on the concept. The response has been very positive and the BOD approved implementation of the project.
For members, it will mean once you update your profile info (phone, email, RV type and etc), and
want to participate in any S*M*A*R*T activity (attend a national regional, or chapter muster, go on a caravan, or join a chapter), all you will have to do is enter your S*M*A*R*T number in one field and all the rest
of the data will be automatically entered for you…no more paper forms to complete. Emails will be sent to
everyone involved (chapter president, caravan wagon master, etc.) informing them of the addition. If you
change your email address or phone number, you make one change to your member profile (either yourself
with password access to your file; or by phone to HQ) and your information will be updated to the database
so it is correct at chapter, and at the national level - always secure, correct, and only available to those within SMART who are authorized access..i.e. Chapter Presidents, Regional Directors, EXCOM and Hq Staff. For
chapters, a common internet server for all chapters will reduce the cost of maintaining a chapter website to
about $25 per year. A common core of information and standard appearance will make navigation easier for
both members and for anyone interested in finding out about S*M*A*R*T, and chapters. Actual control of
content of the chapter website pictures, blogs, etc. will be retained by the chapter. It will be easy to post
information about a chapter muster (or enter a change which will be automatically updated to the region
and the national muster list – available to all S*M*A*R*T members without having to notify HQ by email. In
addition, chapter officers, newsletters, bylaws, standing rules, chapter business meeting minutes, muster
schedules and other chapter documents can be easily posted to the chapter website.
Your access to the national website and chapter websites will be two-fold. Public pages are available
to anyone (what is S*M*A*R*T, what is the XXX chapter, etc.); while sensitive content (member rosters,
etc.) are protected by a password. Your one password will allow you entry to each website you are authorized to access. For example, if you are a member of chapter A and chapter B, but not chapter C; you will
have full access to chapters A & B’s websites, but only the public portion of chapter C. Rest assured truly
sensitive information such as your SSAN and financial data are NOT required by S*M*A*R*T and will NOT be
maintained in the database.
You may have noticed some of the initial efforts to modernize S*M*A*R*T’s administrative process.
For example, you can now join the Club by filling out a form online and paying through PayPal. We will ultimately automate most if not all of the forms you use as a member.
Your implementation team, headed by Jack Fritz, is working hard to bring this system online. While
this may seem like a futuristic concept, it is really the standard and current practice for organizations like
S*M*A*R*T. We will provide you with updates and schedules in future issues of the Traveler and eNews. To
sign your chapter up or for more info, contact Jack Fritz at [email protected]. Chapters who sign up
first will be given priority. With your support, we plan to have all chapters, regions, and the national website
fully operational so current and future members will benefit.

SPECIAL PEOPLE ... Lloyd and Daisy Corbett
Our story with SMART begins in 2009 when Lloyd was introduced to SMART through Mr. Curt Crowe, who
recruited Lloyd into SMART as a member of the Tri-State Rebels. Due to scheduling conflicts, we were unable to attend any Musters with the Rebels, but did stay in touch with Curt and Audrey.
Back in the day, we attended a “Military Retiree Appreciation Day” at Moody AFB, Valdosta, GA. We were
sitting at our table and noticed some two tables away a gentlemen wearing a jacket with a ‘huge’ SMART
Emblem on the back of it. We introduced ourselves and the rest is history…Al and Pat Haynes are walkingtalking ambassadors for SMART! We left Moody AFB that day having formed a great new friendship and
Daisy , having been recruited by Al, was a new member of SMART! THANKS, AL!
Lloyd is a retired AGCS, USN, with 22 years of active duty service. During his career he served on four aircraft carriers and at various shore duty stations at San Diego, Alameda, and China Lake, CA.
As active members of the Chattahoochee Drifters, we find ourselves working and playing with other veterans and their families, who all have pride in our Country, our military personnel, and who are committed to
be proactive in veteran affairs and community activities.
Daisy enjoys crocheting lap afghans for Veteran groups, and skull caps for the Warmth for Warriors Organization as she sits in the ‘Gator seat of their motor home.
Lloyd has driven “Miss Daisy” in their motor home – staying at
least one night in each State (excluding Hawaii, of course) and all
but three of the Canadian Provinces.
We love “Seeing the Country We Defend”
