Graduating from High School in 1961, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship for the highest average on the Nova Scotia Provincial Examinations. He earned three degrees from Dalhousie University - a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics (1965), an M. A. in Operations Research (1969), and a Ph.D. in Statistics (1977). He joined the staff of Saint Mary's University in September 1969 as a Lecturer in Mathematics and Computing Science. In 1987 and 1988, he completed the program of the Institute for Retraining in Computer Science at Clarkson University, Potsdam, New York. One of his colleagues indicated that as a young faculty member at Saint Mary's University, he was first exposed to Porter Scobey as the Chair of the Department, noting that he did "an excellent job of leading the Department". There is no doubt, as one reads through his nomination papers for the Father William A. Stewart, S.J., Medal for Teaching that his colleagues believe that, in his role as a teacher and educator, he has brought and continues to bring a tremendous level of dedication to his teaching. One tremendous example of this lies in the fact that one of his colleagues indicated that "while I was teaching first and second year computing courses, Porter not only carried out his own teaching and his responsibility of chairing the Department, he found time to sit in on both a first year course and a second year course that I was teaching. I recall that he attended every class in both courses and over that period of time, we had frequent discussions about the course material and the process of teaching". It was partly due to the fact that, at that juncture, Porter had taken it upon himself "to start learning the discipline of computing science in addition to all his regular duties as a faculty member and as a Chair of the Department!" The same faculty member indicates that he recalls numerous discussions, both on the course material and how this young professor was teaching and credits Porter with having a significant "formative influence in my development of my own teaching style. He continues to this day to be a 'force of nature' as a resource for newer faculty as well as providing a valuable sounding board for the teaching of computing science for the more experienced members of the Department". While co-teaching the introductory Computing Science courses, Dr. Scobey and others recognized that while there were a number of good text books available for such a course, resources for support of a critical laboratory component of such a course were sadly lacking. Porter rose to the occasion and accepted the overwhelming, challenging task of developing a book for use in first year computer labs. He not only threw himself into this project with a great level of dedication but continuously updates this to the point where it has become one of the Department's "most valuable teaching resource" even when the programming language changed from Pascal to C++. In order to enhance the students' experience in introductory level courses, a number of individuals, led by Porter, developed a computer support system for courses. Here, Porter went on to develop "an extremely elaborate computer software system which in addition to greatly enhancing the liberty of course materials, also allowed students to submit assignments and access records of their marks through the computer". This system has grown, been developed more widely, and now forms the "backbone for a number of courses taught by the Department of Mathematics and Computing Science". It has been noted that in recent years, Porter has spoken of his renewed enthusiasm for teaching. "This is most impressive for someone well beyond their 30th year of university teaching!" In addition, having spent a great portion of his career teaching the very challenging first and second year courses, he has also recently been developing new, senior level courses involving state of the art ideas in Computing Science - again, demonstrating his tireless commitment to teaching. " T i Many in the Department credit him almost single-handedly with having developed and organized the highly successful Saint Mary's University High School Programming Competition which has just completed its fifth year. It has continued to grow, develop, and earn a justifiable place in the minds of talented high school students in Mathematics and Computing Science. As an adjunct to this, in August 2003, the first teachers' workshop for Mathematics and Computing Science was organized. In terms of an additional outreach, one other colleague that "it is difficult to measure how much Dr. Scobey has contributed to the extra curriculum activities of the Department and the University as there are many untold stories. For instance, in the fall of 1998, Dalhousie University was supposed to host the annual APICS Programming Competition and one week before the actual competition started, was unable to meet its commitments. Dr. Scobey accepted the challenge of organizing the entire event on short notice. "In this, he was greatly assisted by other faculty members and student volunteers as he prepared the competition questions, formed the judging committee, and provided the contestants from the Atlantic Provinces with the necessary logistical support. This, in no small way, has enabled Saint Mary's University to establish itself as a 'friendly, helpful, and resourceful post-secondary institution' ". It has also been noted that over the years, Dr. Scobey has established strong ties with eminent companies such as IBM, thus linking Saint Mary's University to the industry world. This immensely enhances the reputation not only of the Department but also of the University with students and alumni benefiting greatly from this exposure. One of his other colleagues indicated that when he arrived at Saint Mary's University in 1995 as an international student, he found Dr. Scobey to be "diligent, student oriented, and a dedicated educator". He further indicated that Scobey's courses "were among the best courses I have ever taken". Basing this on "the high standard of his work could be seen clearly in his easy-to-read textbooks, well formatted slides, typo-free lab manuals, and precisely worded assignments and examination papers". Indeed, so inspired was this international student that he is now a member of the Department and goes on to note that "Dr. Scobey was always there to help those who had problems. He treated their problems as his own." Aside from the verbal testimony of former students and colleagues, the students who have enrolled in Porter's courses over the years have given him very strong ratings on the teaching evaluations. These teaching evaluation results are in the impressive range of 4.1 to 4.5 on a scale of 1 to 5. This is significant in light of the fact that not only had the courses all strong enrolments of at least 20 students but they represented first, second, and third/fourth year students". When interviewed after learning that he had won the prestigious Father William A. Stewart, S.J. Medal for Teaching, he indicated that he was "both honoured and humbled to have received this award.. .while it's nice to win such an award, I want to stress that I am very fortunate to work with superb faculty members, all of whom are just as passionate about teaching, research, and making time for students - the key reason why the Department has been attracting top-notch students, many of whom have gone on to land prestigious jobs, both in academics and industry". Dr. Wayne Grennan Dr. Wayne Grennan joined the Department of Philosophy at Saint Mary's as a Lecturer in 1975. At that time he held a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the former Nova Scotia Technical College, and an Honours B.A. and M.A. from Dalhousie University. He received his Doctor in Philosophy from Oxford University in 1977 and was granted tenure at Saint Mary's two years later. As a result of his teaching and research achievements, Dr. Grennan was appointed Professor of Philosophy in 2000. He has published ten articles and two books, Argument Evaluation (1984), and Informal Logic: Issues And Techniques (1997). Dr. Grennan has served as Chairperson of the Department of Philosophy; as a member of the University Senate; and of the Board of Governors, as well as on a variety of University Committees. HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS At this year's Spring Convocations, Saint Mary's University will confer six honorary degrees: three in the afternoon and three in the evening. AFTERNOON CONVOCATION Sara H. Basson Dr. Basson holds four degrees - a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Studies (magna cum laude) from New York University; a Master of Arts degree in Applied Linguistics from Hunter College of the City University of New York; Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Science from the Graduate Centre of the City University of New York; and an M.B.A. degree in Management/Marketing with honors from the Stern School of Business, New York University. From 1977 to 1983, she was an adjunct instructor in English as a Second Language at New York University and Hunter College of the City University of New York; and for the next four years, an instructor in Speech and Hearing Science courses, Long Island University and the C.W. Post Center, followed by a stint as a consultant with IBM - Thomas J. Watson Research Laboratory from 1984 to 1986. For the next twelve years, she was employed at NYNEX/Bell Atlantic Science and Technology in White Plains, New York, serving in various capacities as the Operations Manager for Network Systems Advanced Technology Organizations; marketing to NYNEX business units as well as external sponsors to ensure project funding, etc. From 1988 to the present, she has been employed with IBM in several capacities, first in the human language technologies from 1988 to 2000; following by working in the Accessibility Centre where she served as Manager of Marketing and Business Development. From 2002 to the present, she has been serving as the Program Manager of Accessibility Service in Global Services for IBM. It was in this latter capacity that she has been working very closely with Dr. David Leitch and his staff at the University's Atlantic Centre for the Support of Students with Disabilities and is frequently on the Saint Mary's University campus. Aside from her professional work, she has an extensive list of publications with joint authorship ranging in date from 1986 to 2001 and is currently on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Speech Technologies. Her other interests include serving on the Board of Directors of the Meals-on-Wheels program for White Plains, New York and as the President of the Board of Directors of the Applied Voice Input/Output Society from 1999 to 2001. She and husband, Amnon, have four sons - Jordan, Tom, Jesse, and Adam. Daniel M. Brownlow Born in Northern Ireland, Daniel McCartney Brownlow came with his family to a farm in Alberta while he was still very young. In 1939, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve as an ordinary seaman and rose to the rank of Lieutenant during service in World War II. Following this war service, he attended the University of Alberta and received a Bachelor of Education degree. He then re-entered the naval service, serving in the Korean Conflict and later commanded HMC ships, Granby and Quinte. In 1958, he joined the Federal Public Service, serving with the Department of National Defense in the position of Master Attendant and Assistant Queen's Harbour Master in Halifax. Mr. Brownlow was a member of Dartmouth City Council for 21 years serving on the Board of School Commissioners for 10 years where he was elected Chairman of the Board six times. During this time, he pursued graduate studies in Educational Psychology at Mount Saint Vincent University. He became Mayor of the then City of Dartmouth in October 1976 and did not re-offer for this civic position in 1985, retiring instead from municipal politics. Since that time, he has continued to volunteer and participate with numerous community and charity groups. As an example, at the present time, he is involved with the following Director and former Chairman of the Dartmouth Senior Citizens Advisory Board; President of Brownlow Enterprises Limited; Member of the Royal United Services Institute of Nova Scotia; a Director of the Shearwater Aviation Museum Foundation; founding member of the Dartmouth Regional Heritage Foundation; Director of the Lupus Society of Nova Scotia as well as the Dartmouth Regional Museum; a member of the Federal Superannuates National Association; and is an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus. He is also involved with the Charitable Irish Society. He has formerly been involved with a very large and diverse number of organizations, including the Atlantic Winter Fair; Neptune Theatre; Canoe Championships; Federal Task Force on Airport Management; the Board of Police Commissioners; the Chairperson of the Metropolitan Authority; the Metro Area Planning Commission; the Halifax/Dartmouth Port Commission and a Representative on the Canadian Pensioners concerned. It is not surprising; therefore, that Mr. Brownlow has received a number of awards, medals, and declarations. For example, in 1992, the Nova Scotia Seniors' Expo chose him as the "Most Remarkable Senior". Then in the year 2000, he was made a Paul Harris Fellow after winning the International Rotarians Community Service Award and in that same year, HRM presented a Certificate of Appreciation as a veteran of World War II. Then in 2001, HRM presented him with a community service award. He has also received a significant number of medals and declarations from his significant military life, including Battle of the Atlantic Star; Canadian Volunteer Service Medal; the Commonwealth Medal for Service in Korea; the Korean Volunteer Medal and the United Nations Medal for Service in Korea. In Canada, he has been honored with a Confederation Medal; a Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal as well as a Gold Anniversary Medal; and the Canadian Forces Declaration (CD) and two bars. Aside from his work as a distinguished Royal Canadian Service person; former Mayor of Dartmouth; and a significant community volunteer, Mr. Brownlow's family connection with Saint Mary's University is remarkable. Ten members of his immediate family have attended Saint Mary's University. These include Patrick, who attended Saint Mary's University High School and subsequently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968, the same year that his brother, Michael, also graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Michael followed this up with a B.Ed, in 1970 and was a lecturer for two years in the Sociology Department as well as serving as Administrative Assistant to the Vice President (Finance and Development) from 1969 to 1970. The third son, Shawn, graduated with a Certificate in Criminology in 1990. Not to be outdone, the next generation of the Brownlow family also has strong connections with Saint Mary's University. Matthew earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2000, followed two years later by a Bachelor of Science degree; Daniel attended from 1993 and 1994 as did Christopher from 1998 to 1999; John from 2000 to 2002; Emily from 2003 to the present; and Bridget from 2004 to the present who also serves as the Sexual Harassment Advisor at the University. His daughter-in-law, Maureen O'Neil, obtained a Bachelor of Social Work degree from Saint Mary's University in 1960. All members of Daniel and the late Genevieve's family reside in the Dartmouth/Halifax area. Burris Devanney A native Haligonian, Burris Devanney, attended public school in Halifax, graduating from Saint Patrick's High School in 1957. He then moved on to Saint Mary's University on a Knights of Columbus Scholarship; played on the University Football Team, which won the Maritime Junior (under 21) Championship three years in a row; and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in English and Philosophy in 1958. The next year he was at Dalhousie University, where he also played football in the first Dalhousie/Saint Mary's Football game at the Wanderer's Grounds in September 1959. He graduated from Dalhousie with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1960. His other formal education included a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Ottawa in 1972 and the completion of the course requirements for a doctorate in English Literature at the University of Ottawa. His teaching career began at Saint Patrick's High School where he also coached the high school football team for five years. In June 1965, he married Louanne Webb and they went off to Africa together for two years, having contracts in Rodesia and Nigeria. From 1967, until his retirement from the Halifax School Board in 1994 he worked not only at Saint Patrick's High School but also at Halifax West and more latterly, J. L. Ilsley High School. As soon as he retired, he was appointed Executive Director of The Nova Scotia Gambia Association which he and his wife helped to found in the mid-80's. This has grown over the years to have a nation-wide impact in The Gambia, West Africa. Since retirement from the school board, Burris and his wife have been dividing their time between Halifax and Banjul in The Gambia where he was instrumental in the establishment of the Saint Mary's University's Extension Program; a peer health education program; and more recently, a working partnership between the Halifax Regional Police Service and The Gambia Police force. He has co-authored two curriculum resource books used in the Canadian public school system and was the co-producer/editor of a 105 minute video production entitled "The Gambia Project", which won the Award of Excellence for Documentaries at the Atlantic Film Festival in 1987. His varied working career has resulted in a number of significant awards being bestowed on him, including, the Louis Perinbam Award in International Development in 2003; the Order of the Republic of The Gambia in 2000; the Distinguished Community Service Award of Saint Mary's University's Alumni Association for professional and voluntary endeavors, in Canada and abroad, in 1999; the UNAC Halifax 50th Anniversary Global Citizenship Award in 1995; and was also made a "Paul Harris Fellow" by the Rotary Foundation and Rotary International "in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relationship among people of the world" in 1998. He and his wife have two children - Sarah, a graduate of Saint Mary's University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Education degree, who is currently teaching in the Teaching English as a Second Language Centre at Saint Mary's University; and Matthew, who graduated from Saint Mary's University with a Bachelor of Arts (Honors in History) in 1992. He taught a History course at the Saint Mary's University Extension Program in The Gambia in the year 2000 and has been both teaching History and serving as department head of social studies at Marina International School in The Gambia for the past four years. EVENING CONVOCATION Graham W. Dennis A native Haligonian, Mr. Dennis attended Sir Charles Tupper Elementary School, followed by three years at Cornwallis Junior High School prior to entering Queen Elizabeth High School. After graduation, he attended McGill University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949. One of the greatest inspirations in his life was his Father - a self-made man with a grade 4 education who proved that you could get ahead in life if you worked hard. Mr. Dennis is, indeed, the third generation of his family to be in the newspaper business. He started as a child selling newspapers, working during summer break and began working full-time after his University degree was conferred. In 1954, upon the death of his Father, he assumed the role of publisher of the Halifax Herald Limited newspapers and in 1963, he became President and C.E.O. of The Chronicle Herald, The Mail Star, and The Sunday Herald. When queried about his career milestones, Mr. Dennis indicated that being able to oversee the purchase of three presses during his years in the business stands out. When queried about his outstanding and proudest achievements to the success of an organization or profession, he indicated that he is the longest-serving publisher in Canada and his papers are the largest independent ones in the country. He gives daily personal attention to the newspapers' progress and development. The papers are a "sacred trust". A steadfast loyalty and determination have allowed his newspapers to remain independent - while out-of-province interest controls so many other newspapers. To support further his outstanding achievement in the success of his organizations and profession, in 1984, Mr. Dennis was made a member of the Order of Canada, the citation reading in part "since entering the family newspaper business in Halifax, he has progressively realized the ideal of a public spirited publisher. While consistently developing the close ties of The Chronicle Herald and Mail Star to their community, he has also championed minority rights, education, hospitals, underprivileged children and the economy of the Atlantic region". While Mr. Dennis often refers to himself as "just a humble peddler" of papers who frequently shies away from the limelight, he is always "in the know" as to what is going on in his newspaper as well as in the Province. He maintains daily contact with all departments at the newspaper, is rarely away from the office, and calls the newsroom regularly in the evening with the famous "whose in charge" to get a run-down of what is running on page one in tomorrow's edition. The daily meetings with the managing editor and other department heads are prefaced with a "what's new" greeting. He has never requested that a story be kept out of the paper - on the contrary - he is always eager for the people of Nova Scotia to get more news. Not content to spend all of his time in the office, Mr. Dennis is famous for his forays across the Province and remains an eternal optimist for the future of Nova Scotia. He always returns from these forays with plenty of stories for the newsroom to follow-up and to his credit, therefore, his newspapers are a keen source of Nova Scotian news. As one would expect, there has been considerable community and charitable involvement by Mr. Dennis over his distinguished career. This has led to such as the establishing of the Dennis Medical Fund at Dalhousie Medical School; supporting the Duke of Edinburgh Awards for many years and establishing a special pediatric fund at the IWK Hospital for children which resulted in him being awarded the IWK Award for Distinction in 1983. He is also a keen supporter of the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Cystic Fibrosis Society and the Sisters of Charity. Through The Herald, Mr. Dennis continues to support three charities by covering all administrative costs - the Bill Lynch Memorial Fund; Rainbow Haven Opportunities Fund; and the Goodfellows Club. Mr. Dennis donated to the Province of Nova Scotia what is now known as Bayswater Beach for public use and when Laurie Park was opened, he permitted his adjoining lands to be used for public access to this Park. He also established the Dennis Park at Stewiacke. Additional awards which have been bestowed on him include the Queen's Jubilee Medal (1977); the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in recognition of his many contributions for journalism and society as a whole (2003); and also in the year 2003, an Honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree was conferred on him by the University of Kings College. This past November, he was the recipient of a Canadian Red Cross Humanitarian Award for his lifetime of humanitarian work. His late son, Willliam, graduated from Saint Mary's University with a Master of Business Administration degree in May 2002 and his daughter, Sarah, also graduated with a Master of Business Administration degree six years earlier and now is a member of the University's Board of Governors. Frank J.Hayden After graduating from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955, Dr. Hayden moved to the University of Illinois in Urbana and three years later, received a Master of Science degree followed in 1962 by a Ph.D. degree. Professor Emeritus at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, Dr. Hayden has also served on the faculties of the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario. From 1975 to 1981, he was Director of the School of Physical Education and Athletics at McMaster. He has a special interest in sport and fitness programs for children, particularly for those classified as developmentally disabled. A graduate of the University of Illinois' Physical Fitness Research Laboratory, he has spent over 40 years designing and evaluating exercise and sport programs. In 1966, he coauthored the first national study of the fitness of Canadian children, a project which involved 11,000 boys and girls from coast to coast and provided the basis for the Centennial Fitness Program and, later, the Canada Fitness Awards. He also co-developed and co-authored the R.C.A.F.'s famous 5BX Program. For seven years, Dr. Hayden served as a Director at the Kennedy Foundation in Washington, D.C. His work there ranged from developing new concepts in playground design to establishment of federal legislation to assist the disabled. Perhaps his most significant accomplishment was the creation and development of "Special Olympics". This program of sport training and competition for people with a mental handicap currently involves 1.2 million participants in 150 countries. The tenth World Summer Games were held in June, 1999, in North Carolina, USA, and involved 7,000 competitors from those countries. 2000 athletes from 60 countries competed in the Seventh World Winter Games in Anchorage, Alaska, in March of 2001. From 1981 to 1984, Dr. Hay den took leave from McMaster to establish the Special Olympics' Office of International Development, and served as its first Director. He designed and directed international growth of the program from 15 national organizations to 50. His travels have taken him across Europe, South and Central America, Asia and the South Pacific, Africa and the Middle East, North America and the Caribbean. In 1988, Dr. Hayden took early retirement from McMaster and moved to Paris to establish and direct the Office of European Affairs for Special Olympics International. In the two years which followed, 13 new national organizations were created in Europe, making a total of 30, stretching from Moscow to Reykjavik and Oslo to Nicosia. A total of 2,300 athletes from those countries competed at the European Summer Games in Glasgow, Scotland, in July, 1990. The Paris Office became the focal point of promotion, communication, and technical assistance for sport training and competition for the mentally handicapped in Europe. In October, 1990, Dr. Hayden turned over the office and European affairs to European personnel and returned to Canada. From 1994 to 2000, he served as Special Consultant to Canadian Special Olympics. He currently works as a private consultant and lecturer and as a Citizenship Judge for Citizenship & Immigration Canada. In December, 1994, citing "his outstanding and lasting contributions to the lives of people with mental handicap through sport", Maclean's magazine named Dr. Hayden to its Honor Roll of 12 Outstanding Canadians. In 1996, Dr. Hayden was the recipient of the prestigious Royal Bank Award for "Canadians who have made an important contribution to human welfare and the common good". In March, 1997, as part of its 200th Anniversary celebration, The Toronto Eaton Centre included Dr. Hayden among the distinguished group of individuals they honoured for having achieved excellence in their fields and for having made substantial contributions to the civic life in Toronto. That same month, he was made an Honorary and Permanent Member of the Canadian Olympic Association. On April 22,1997, Dr. Hayden was introduced in the Canadian House of Commons in Ottawa and honoured at a Parliamentary reception hosted by the Speaker. Later that year, he was presented with the Alumni Community Service Award by the University of Western Ontario Alumni Association. He was awarded the honorary degree, Doctor of Laws, by McMaster University in 1997, the University of Calgary in 1988 and the University of Toronto in 1999. Also in 1999, he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. In retirement, Dr. Hayden serves as a Citizenship Judge in Hamilton, Ontario. Marjorie M. Scardino After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and Psychology from Baylor University in 1969, she pursued a Bachelor of Law degree, graduating from the University of San Francisco in 1975. Until 1985, she was a partner in a law firm in Savannah, Georgia, as well as being the publisher and founder with her husband of the Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper, The Georgia Gazette. She then spent 12 years as the Chief Executive of the Economist Group and is now the Chief Executive of Pearson, the international media group whose primary business operations include Pearson Education (incorporating businesses such as Scott Foresman, Prentice Hall, Addison Wesley and educational testing, data and software operations); the Financial Times Group and Penguin books. Pearson also owns a 50% stake in The Economist. For her successful business leadership, particularly in the publication of educational material and also her very positive role model, Dr. Scardino has been granted a number of honorary degrees from institutions such as New School University, Brunei University, the Heriot-Watt University and Exeter University. She has also been presented with a number of prestigious awards, including the New York City Partnership's International Commerce and Leadership Award; the Women's Economic Round Table Award; Baylor University Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni Award; Futuro Business Magazine (Spain) Best European Business Person of 2001; the University of Iowa's Business Leadership Award; and the National Centre for Learning Difficulties' Spirit of Achievement Award. In addition, in February 2002, she was named a Dame Commander of the British Empire and is an Honorary Fellow of the London Business School as well as a Fellow of the City and Guilds of the London Institute. She is a non-executive member of Nokia Corporation and a member of a large number of charitable and advisory boards, including The Carter Center and The Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Dr. Scardino is married to Albert Scardino, a journalist, and they have three children. RETIREMENTS Six faculty members are to retire this August with a combined years of service of 188 years. Stanley Armstrong Dr. Armstrong joined Saint Mary's University's Department of Religious Studies on 1 September 1960 and will retire on 31 August 2004. Dr. Armstrong has asked that no special recognition be made of his retirement - a wish which the University community respects. Darryl Bruce Darryl Bruce graduated from McGill University in 1959 with a B .Com. degree and has a C.A. degree from the Quebec Institute of Chartered Accountants. In 1961, he concluded that that there had to be something more interesting in life than balance sheets and profit and loss statements and he decided to become a university professor. But of what? Psychology seemed interesting. So he took up study in that field, first at the University of California at Berkeley and then at Pennsylvania State University, where he earned his Ph.D. degree. Following a postdoctoral research year at the University of Toronto (196667), he accepted a faculty position at Florida State University and rose through the ranks to full professor. In 1987, he was appointed Head of Psychology at Mount Allison University. Three years later, he joined the Saint Mary's University faculty. He has also held visiting professorships at Emory University, the University of Colorado, the University of Lethbridge, and the University of Sussex. At Saint Mary's, he has served the University and the Department of Psychology in a number of ways, notably, as a member of the University Pension Committee and as Chairperson of Psychology from 1990 to 1994. In teaching and research, Dr. Bruce has specialized in two areas: human memory and the history of psychology. His research in these fields has been supported in Canada by NSERC and SSHRC and in the U. S. by the National Institute on Aging, the National Institutes of Health, the Office of Education, and the Office of Naval Research. He is the co-editor of two books on memory and has written over 50 articles on memory and the history of psychology. In retirement, he intends, among other things, to maintain his association with the University and to continue doing, albeit at a more leisurely pace, the many things that are the privileges and rewards of being a professor, which in his case includes thinking, writing, and teaching about various topics in psychology. Milton Chew After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from Juniata College, followed by a Master of Science and a Ph.D. from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Dr. Chew joined the staff of Saint Mary's University in 1974. He has the distinction of being the first chairperson of the newly-created Department of Finance and Management Science and has served in that capacity for a total of 10.0 years. His other service commitments to Saint Mary's University including a number of positions within Saint Mary's University's Faculty Union. He will retire on August 31 2004, admitting that he will "miss his students and faculty and staff colleagues but he is looking forward to spending much more time with his grandchildren and other 'fun' activities". Irmingard Lenzer Dr. Lenzer joined the University's Department of Psychology in 1969 and hence when she retires at the end of the summer, she will have served the University for a total of 35 years. Dr. Lenzer has asked that no special recognition be made of her retirement - a wish which the University community respects. Kenneth MacKinnon Kenneth MacKinnon joined the Department of English at Saint Mary's in 1962. He chaired the Department in 1963-1964 and again in the years between 1974 and 1978. He also administered in Atlantic Canada Studies, as Program Co-ordinator from 1980 to 1982 and as Executive Director of the Gorsebrook Research Institute for Atlantic Canada Studies from 1986 to 1989. Besides serving on Senate, the Board of Governors, and chairing the Senate Curriculum Committee as well as the University Grievance Committee, he was also long active on the executive of a number of regional and national academic bodies and cultural organizations. He volunteered for the Atlantic Canada Institute from 1972 to 1988, designing and securing support for the Institute's non-credit summer programs on the culture of the region. Besides time on the executive of bodies such as the Nova Scotia Historical Society, he was from 1991 to 2001 Secretary of the local Gaelic Society and helped mount its Gaelic-language and music programs. Over the years, he served on the executive of eight national academic societies in Canadian Studies, Scottish Studies, and English Studies, and for two years edited for the Canadian Association of Chairs of English the C.A.C.E. Newsletter. As a teacher, scholar, and research facilitator. Dr. MacKinnon has been a pioneer in Atlantic Canadian cultural studies. He initiated the first full-year course taught anywhere in the literature of the region in 1972; the first course on regional culture in 1978; cofounded the Saint Mary's-based Atlantic Provinces Book Review in 1974 and chaired its board until 1989; helped mount the first colloquium on Atlantic literature in 1976 and edited the proceedings as a book in 1977; chaired the Program Committee of the first conference ever held on ethnic identity in the region in 1981; and headed up the Canadian Ethnic Studies Association National Conference when it came to the Gorsebrook in 1978. In 1988, he co-edited with Dr. John Reid a special Atlantic issue of The Journal of Canadian Studies. He has supervised a number of Atlantic Studies Masters theses, presented over 40 conference papers, and has been active in writing and assessing journal articles on Maritime Scottish writers and on the culture of Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. With his departmental colleagues, Drs. Katz, Perkyns and Thomas, he has been a co-editor for Nelson publishers of a highly-successful literature textbook, the original edition of which came out in 1981 and is now in its fifth edition. Ishmael Okraku Dr. Okraku joined the staff of Saint Mary's University in 1973 after earning a Bachelor of Arts degree (Ghana) as well as an M.A. and Ph.D. (Cornell). Similar to two of his other colleagues, he has asked that no special recognition be made of his retirement - a wish which the University community respects. He will retire from his Associate Professorship in Sociology on 31 August 2004. AFTERNOON CONVOCATION VALEDICTORIAN Juliette Gonsalves Born in Halifax, Ms. Gonsalves' early education was in the Dutch Caribbean where she attended the International School of Aruba, The Methodist Agogic Centre, and Saint Maarten Academy. She graduated in June 2000 from the Scared Heart Convent of Halifax with honors and while a student there, was a member of both the school choir and assistant editor of the school newspaper. Her choice of Saint Mary's University was perhaps a logical one given the fact that her Father is an alumnus. Aside from a strong academic performance at Saint Mary's University, as witnessed by being placed on the Dean's List in 2000-2001 and again in 2002-2003, she has worked as the features editor for The Journal for two years; as a campus tour guide for the University; and as a cultural and administrative assistant at the TESL Centre of the University from June 2001 to April 2002. From November 2000 to September 2002; she was a member of Saint Mary's Basilica's Choir; was a frosh leader on campus; and has done volunteer work at the IWK-Grace Maternity Hospital as well as with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. She has also worked off-campus at such institutions as Mills Brothers and Consumer Impact Marketing as well as the 7lh Avenue Boutique. This past year, she served as the Secretary for the Executive of the Graduating Class of 2004. She will graduate later today with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Classics and a minor in German. Her future academic plans include earning a Master of Arts degree in Classics and then either a M.B.A. or a Ph.D. in Classics. She served also as a member of the Criminology Society and volunteered as a tutor with Frontier College, helping women acquire a graduate equivalency diploma so that they can work towards a better future. She also volunteered as a probation officer helping to monitor the behaviour of those individuals on conditional sentences or undertakings and providing them with help and assistance for social problems. She also has had the privilege of working with those individuals with disabilities trying to prepare them for independent living. Her future plans include attending law school with aspirations of becoming a criminal lawyer. EVENING CONVOCATION VALEDICTORIAN Jonathan Bellot Prior to enrolling at Saint Mary's University, Mr. Bellot worked for a year in Dominica with a telecom company called Cable and Wireless. Prior to that, he had graduated from Dominica Grammar School in 1997 and two years later, from Clifton Dupigny Community College where he studied Economics, Sociology, and Computer Science. He entered Saint Mary's University in September 2000 and will graduated later today with a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a double major in Finance and Economics. Mr. Bellot has been a very busy student while attending Saint Mary's University in that he was a member of the DRAFT Team; Treasurer of the Caribbean Society for 2001-2002; Vice President (External) of the Commerce Society; and International Student Representative on the Saint Mary's University Students' Association, Inc. In addition, he served as a resident's assistant for two years and a resident security officer for an additional two. He was a preliminary-round competitor of the Intercollegiate Business Competition (2003-2004) and a third place finalist at the 2004 Dalhousie International Business Competition. He served as the co-chair and chair of the 2003 and 2004 Annual Commerce Business Society Dinner and also as the Co-ordinator of the Sobey School of Business 2004 Undergraduate Business Games Team. His future plans include continuing his interest in business and legal (corporate law) fields, hoping thereby to impact positively the lives of individuals with whom he comes in contact. HOODING CANDIDATE Jessica Bitsack After graduating from Goose Bay High School, Ms. Bitsack entered Saint Mary's University in September 2000 and will graduate later today with a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in Accounting. While a student at the University, she was involved with the Commerce Society, The Maroon and White Society, and the Student Alumni Association. She also worked for the Saint Mary's University Students' Association for three years in such positions as Information Desk Attendant and Summer Services Co-ordinator. This past academic year, she has served as the Vice President (Finance) for the Students' Association which involved her in at least 12 committees, including the Board of Governors, the Liquor Operations Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Fiscal Advisory Committee. Ms. Bitsack was also named the first Woman of the Month from the Saint Mary's University Women's Centre, an area in which she has taken an active interest. Ms. Bitsack hopes to return to Saint Mary's University to further her education with the expectation of obtaining a Chartered Accountancy designation. HISTORY OF SAINT MARY'S UNIVERSITY Saint Mary's University was founded in 1802 to provide opportunities for higher learning to young Catholic men. Its founder, the Reverend Edmund Burke, had meagre resources to work with, but on later being named Bishop with responsibility for Nova Scotia, he continued to support the college as essential to the development of the Catholic community. In 1841, the Nova Scotia House of Assembly gave formal recognition of its academic role. Its legal status was confirmed in perpetuity by enactment in 1852. In 1913, the Christian Brothers of Ireland, a teaching order, were invited by the Archdiocese of Halifax to direct the college and its academic program. During the ensuing years, Saint Mary's University became more widely known for the quality of its undergraduate teaching and continued to develop new instructional programs, most notably within its Faculty of Commerce. In 1940 the Upper Canada Province of The Society of Jesus was invited to succeed the Christian Brothers as administrators and teachers in the University, and for thirty years until the enactment in 1970 of the new act of incorporation, the college remained under Jesuit supervision. The long-standing emphasis on liberal arts and commerce was extended to include new programs in science, engineering, and teacher education. Extension courses became an important part of the University's commitment to an active educational role in the community. The newest building on campus, The Sobey Building, opened in the fall of 1998, houses the Sobey School of Business and provides meeting rooms as well as state-of-the-art classrooms for all three faculties of the University. In the year 2002-2003, the University celebrated its 200th Anniversary in a year long series of celebratory events. The celebration provided a marvellous retrospective of our past and set the stage for the University's significant role in the 21st Century. This will be guided by the Academic Plan, first developed in the 2002-2003 academic year under the guidance of Dr. Terry Murphy, Vice President, Academic & Research, and through a consultative process with all constituent groups of the University Community. AN EXPLANATION FOR OUR GUESTS: THE CONVOCATION CEREMONY (a) The Procession The ceremony starts with the procession — the entering of the members of Convocation, beginning with the Marshall of Convocation and the students who will be presented with degrees, diplomas, and certificates during the service. As the students fill up the chairs in the Gymnasium, they will give the impression that today's ceremony really is, as convocations traditionally were, a meeting of the whole University. (The word "convocation" means "calling-together".) Indeed, the Gymnasium could not hold all the individuals who are part of Saint Mary's — the students, the professors, the administration, the staff, and a large number of alumni around the world — not to mention their families and friends. Next in the procession are special guests, the Members of Faculty, the Board of Governors, and the Deans of the Faculties. Next are honorary degree recipients. In addition to "earned" degrees awarded to students who have studied and met the usual requirements, annually the University confers several "honorary" degrees on individuals who have been designated by the University's Board of Governors and Senate as deserving special honour. To symbolize the degrees, they will receive hoods trimmed with specially designated colours. The person receiving this honour will be introduced during the Convocation ceremony and a brief text is read to explain why she merits the award. Details are found in the earlier portion in this program. The final members of the academic procession are the Vice-President, Academic and Research (who presides over Convocation), the President, and the Chancellor of the University. Frequently, the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia and her husband join the procession. Many will have colourful gowns and hoods of institutions from across Canada, the United States, and many nations of the world. (b) The Ceremonial Mace The ceremonial mace, which is carried by the Marshall of Convocation at the head of the academic procession, was presented to Saint Mary's in April 1980 and used for the first time at the Spring Convocation of that same year. It symbolizes the University's authority to grant degrees. It was made and presented to the University by Maritime Command in recognition of Saint Mary's alumni killed in both world wars and also in recognition of serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have been students at the University. The mace is made of oak with a cast brass crown and brass plates carrying traditional ceremonial engravings. The plates represent the contribution to Saint Mary's by the Jesuit Fathers, the Christian Brothers of Ireland, the Archdiocese of Halifax, the LaSalle Christian Brothers, the Lay Teachers, and the Armed Forces. (c) Degrees and Diplomas Awarded with Distinctions At Saint Mary's University in the general undergraduate degree and diploma programs, academic distinctions are awarded to successful candidates on the basis of the following cumulative quality point averages of all courses taken at Saint Mary's University. Students must have taken a minimum of 75% of their courses at Saint Mary's University to qualify for a distinction. There are no distinctions awarded in the Bachelor of Education program, nor in graduate and certificate programs. Program: B.A., B.Comm., & B.Sc. Quality Point Distinction: Average Diploma in Engineering summa cum laude magna cum laude cum laude Honours: First Class 4.00-4.30 3.85-3.99 3.70-3.84 4.00-4.30 with greatest distinction with great distinction with distinction To honour those outstanding students, the President's Hall of Academic Excellence was inaugurated on 22 May 2002. Located in the main hallway of the McNally Building, directly outside the President's Office, this Hall will display the names of all students who earned their parchments with one of the distinctions previously cited. It will also include the names of students who won academic medals at graduation. This Bicentennial project will serve as a permanent and very public recognition of the academic excellence of Saint Mary's University's students. TRADITIONS Traditions form a very important component of a University. A number of these are associated with Convocation, including the five described in the following paragraphs. (a) University Crest Designed in the 1940's by the Reverend Daniel Fogarty, S.J., then Dean of Education, each symbol in the crest has a significance relevant to the various phases and history of the University. On the outer portion of the crest, the name and location of the University are inscribed in Latin and, in Roman numerals (1841), the date the University received its charter authorizing it to grant degrees. The book shown above the shield represents learning and knowledge. The inscription on the page of the book is in Latin — "Age Quod Agis". This is the motto of the University which exhorts all those connected with the University to strive to do their best in everything that they do. This quotation is from the Irish Christian Brothers and symbolizes their contribution to the development of the institution. The upper part of the shield has the official seal of the Jesuits with I.H.S. being the Greek initials for Christ's name. Below these initials are the three nails which represent the Crucifixion, and surrounding these is the Crown of Thorns. The two crowns represent a dual loyalty — to the then Dominion of Canada and to the British Commonwealth. Below these crowns is the thistle, which stands for Nova Scotia's Scottish heritage. (b) The Presidential Medallion of Office On 22 October 2000, a Medallion of Office was officially presented to the University and used for the first time that same day at the installation of Dr. J. Colin Dodds as President. Designed and crafted by James Bradshaw and Bruce Babcock of James Bradshaw Jewelery Design Studios, Inc., Halifax, its centre is a University Gold Medal, traditionally awarded to the top graduating students. It symbolizes the University's deep commitment to academic excellence. It is surrounded by contrasting sterling silver, representing the diversity of the institution's students and of its academic programs. It was generously presented by Mary Eileen Donahoe and her family as a memorial to the late Senator Richard A. Donahoe, Q.C., K.S.G., LL.D.(Hon.), a member of one of the University's earliest Boards of Governors, in recognition of his career of public service and his love of Saint Mary's. (c) The Hooding Ceremony As you will observe, all the graduates and members of the academic procession are attired in the basic elements of formal academic dress, which at Saint Mary's follows the general guidelines established at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England. Formal attire consists of academic robe, hood and mortar board, although at Saint Mary's the latter is limited to Master's graduates only. The academic dress worn by each participant depends upon the academic level attained. There is a special attire for the Bachelor level candidates, for the Master's, and the Doctorate. While tradition has dictated the style or cut of the academic attire, each post-secondary institution, for the most part, will amend certain details of the attire to suit its own particular tastes and traditions. The academic hood which each graduate is wearing symbolizes the degree into which the student will be or has been admitted. The hood itself traces its tradition back to the Middle Ages, when its prototype, with a cowl-like appendage and tail, was used to cover the shoulders in the cold and draughty medieval buildings or in inclement weather. Gradually this garment was modified and the hood assumed an academic rather than functional significance. The hood has two basic elements: the trim on the outer edge and an inner satin lining. Each hood has its outer edge trimmed with a colour to indicate a particular faculty and degree: white symbolizes Arts; gold, Science; grey, Commerce; and white with pale blue, Education. The hood for the Master's candidates is essentially the same as the Bachelor's hood except that the trim is usually an inch or two wider. All the Bachelor level hoods are lined with satin in the colours of the institution granting the degree. Hence at Saint Mary's the hood is lined with maroon satin with a white chevron. The Master's hood at Saint Mary's is lined with maroon satin only to give it added distinction from the Bachelor's. A symbolic hooding ceremony has become a traditional feature of all Convocations at Saint Mary's. (d) Flags on the Stage Each year Saint Mary's has a number of non-Canadians in its student body. The flags which you see displayed on the stage for Convocation are but a part of the University's historic collection. They are from some of the countries from which these students come, not necessarily graduating students, but those in any year of study. The globalization of the Saint Mary's University community is a feature of justifiable pride which contributes markedly to the growth and understanding of both Canadian and non-Canadian students. Also included in the University's permanent historic collection of flags is one from the International Year of the Disabled signifying the University's permanent commitment to people with disabilities. Also part of this collection is that of the Mi'kmaqs' in recognition of their First Nation's Status. For the first time at our Spring 2002 Convocations the University's Bicentennial flag took its rightful place in our permanent historic collection. (e) Graduation Alumni Pins The Alumni Association of Saint Mary's University has generously provided an Alumni Pin again this year. This is a tradition which started with the 1992 Spring Convocation. Graduates are encouraged to wear theirs with pride and to consider becoming an active member of the Association. A symbolic presentation of an Alumni pin to the Hooding Candidate by the President of the Alumni Association has become a traditional feature of all Convocations at Saint Mary's University. * * * The University's symbols and traditions reflect its roots as well as looking to its future, and the ritual of Convocation looks to the roots of the University as well as being a beginning for the students who now enter a new stage in their lives. Indeed, both the symbols and the Convocation look back far beyond the beginning of this University to the centuries of academic life in western civilization. Today the University dresses in clothes which are symbolic, not functional, and goes through the 600-year-old ritual of a convocation for the conferment of degrees, diplomas, and certificates. We thank you for being present to share in it with the Saint Mary's University community. Framing of Parchments The Saint Mary's University Alumni Association, in conjunction with the University's Bookstore, is pleased to provide an on-site, instant framing program following graduation ceremonies.
