HSHV serves all of Washtenaw County, providing: • Shelter and care for stray and unwanted animals • Adoption of companion animals • Full-service veterinary clinic, including low-cost spay and neuter services • 24-hour rescue of injured animals • Cruelty investigations • Microchip ID • Trap, Neuter & Return (TNR) for feral cats • Owner-requested euthanasia • Harbor program • Community outreach and education • Behavior Helpline For Pits’ Sake Spring / Summer 2009 Summer 2010 By Tanya Hilgendorf In April, we celebrated our “Pittie Love” with month-long adoption specials. But it’s really something we celebrate at HSHV every day, all year long. Though publicly maligned and, without a doubt, the most abused and neglected dog breed in the United States, pit bulls can make the most loving pets imaginable. This breed, known for their loyalty and great sense of humor, was our nation’s WWI mascot and once dubbed the “Nannie Dog” because of their loving disposition toward kids. Tragically, they are also the preferred breed of dogfighters (partly because they are easy to handle and eager to please) and irresponsible owners. And because they are over-bred for a quick buck, fought, and, all too often, chained up alone and starved in backyards, they are also the most common breed we see at our door. But HSHV is leading the way in creating a humane world for these faithful companions. We have a highly successful and unique adoption program, an Animal Cruelty Investigation Department that relentlessly chases down their human offenders, and we just received a grant from PetSmart Charities to provide free spaying and neutering for 800 pit bulls in our community! If you are skeptical about their truly loving nature, please come by and meet one of adoptable Pitties, like Gooch, who was just 3 weeks old and weighed 3 pounds when he came to HSHV. He was a serious neglect case, severely malnourished, urine scalds on his tail, paws, and back legs, lots of fur missing, and an abscess behind his left ear. A sad little guy. Gooch, one of HSHV’s adopted Pitties When he was adopted, his coat had come in, and he was bright eyed and wonderful, says his dedicated foster mom, Christina Zeisler. Below is an excerpt of a “Happy Tail” from Gooch’s adopters… “…such a sweet guy. Very goofy and loving. He is seriously just the apple of our eyes. He’s learned a lot of good manners in the past couple of months. Is becoming skilled in the art of good walking, but still has a little trouble controlling his excitement when we encounter new people because he just wants to go meet everyone. We just think he is wonderful; he has brought so much joy to our household.” 2 Shelter Life z Spring 2010 Altering the Future: HSHV Clinic Takes on Pet Overpopulation Pet overpopulation is a serious problem. It is the main reason why thousands of animals enter our shelter each year. These are not just the offspring of homeless “street” animals —these are the puppies and kittens of cherished family pets and even purebreds. Spaying and neutering is the best way to stem pet overpopulation, and ensure that every animal has a happy home. Our Clinic has launched an aggressive effort to perform 10,000 low-cost spay and neuter surgeries in 2010. This is 5,000 more surgeries than last year. Helping with this effort, PetSmart Charities recently awarded HSHV’s “Fix-A-Bull” program a $75,000 grant to spay or neuter 800 pit bulls in Ypsilanti Township. Over 50% of the animals that HSHV takes in come from Ypsilanti Twp., including pit bulls, where spaying and neutering are not commonplace and where there have been abundant incidents of dog fighting and animal cruelty. This grant will allow a targeted community of pit bull owners to spay or neuter their companion animal at no cost. This is crucial as spay/neuter services can be cost prohibitive for many hardworking families, especially in today’s economy. Through the “Fix-A-Bull” program, HSHV will save the lives and possible suffering of countless companion animals in our community by preventing the births of unwanted animals. Please call 734-661-3525 if you would like to make a donation to our low cost Spay and Neuter Fund to help stop pet overpopulation. Wish List Please visit www.hshv.org to see items on our WISH LIST. If you don’t see the item you want to donate, please call us at 734.662.5585 before making a trip to HSHV. Thank you! 2 Humane Society of Huron Valley 3 Grand Opening Celebration, a “Thank You” to HSHV Supporters Over 200 donors, volunteers and community members turned out for the celebration of the completion of the brand new Humane Society of Huron Valley on March 10th, 2010. The event included a presentation to Virginia Sory Brown, whose generous donation allowed for the kick-off of a capital campaign to build the new shelter. Guests enjoy wonderful food catered by Paesano’s Restaurant The new animal care facility opened its doors on October 28th, 2009, a little over one year after construction began. While enough money was raised to complete the build of the shelter, the world-wide economic crisis forced the capital campaign to be put on hold. The Matthaei Family is helping us complete our fundraising now by providing a $100,000 challenge grant. You can download a matching grant form at www.hshv.org, or contact Deb Kern at [email protected] or 734-661-3527 for more information. Sharon Rothwell, HSHV Capital Campaign Chair, Virginia Sory Brown with dog Silk, and Deb Kern, HSHV Marketing Director We thank everyone who made the dream of a new shelter for Washtenaw County a reality. Many more homeless pets will get a second chance at a lifelong home. HSHV Offers Affordable Dog and Puppy Training Michael Burkey with recent alumnus Sitka One of the many benefits of the new shelter is space available for large scale training. We are excited to now offer dog and puppy training classes to the public. Dog Training: Michael Burkey, professional canine behavior specialist, is conducting dog training classes at HSHV. Michael has worked with HSHV over the last year helping us with shelter dogs that needed a little assistance. Classes are held one evening each week for six weeks. Each class is an hour long. Michael Burkey is a professional dog trainer and dog behavior consultant, an expert trial witness, former Police K9 Handler, former Search and Rescue K9 Handler and Trainer, obedience and rally competitor, and a Certified Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator for the American Kennel Club (AKC). He works with all breeds, large and small. Visit www.hshv.org, or call (734) 6344152 to sign up for the next series of dog training classes. Puppy Training: Jerry Koszednar, CPDT-KA, and Linda Sell, DVM are conducting “Head Start” puppy training classes. Classes are held one evening each week for four weeks and are an hour long. Jerry Koszednar is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) since 2001, a professional member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) since 1993, an evaluator of the AKC Canine Good Citizenship (CGC) test, and a member of the Ann Arbor Dog Training Club (AADTC) for 25 years. Linda Sell, DVM, is a 1982 graduate from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, with a particular interest in helping establish a strong, healthy bond between owners and puppies from the beginning of the relationship. She has been a member of Ann Arbor Dog Training Club since 1988, where she has been an instructor for 11 years. Visit www.hshv.org, or call (734) 661-3513 to sign up for the next series of puppy training classes. 4 Shelter Life z Spring 2010 Event Calendar HSHV Volunteers Make a Huge Difference One Hour at a Time Those who can, do. Every day our Investigators see unimaginable abuse, suffering and neglect. Matt Schaecher has been an Investigator for HSHV since 2005, and became the Supervisor of the Animal Cruelty Investigation & Rescue Department in September of 2009. Matt is also a firefighter for the City of Detroit—in fact, that’s how he became involved in animal rescue. “Responding to a call one night, we found a dog that was hung, doused with lighter fluid, and lit on fire,” Matt says. “That was the moment when I realized how terrible some people can be to animals. I couldn’t sleep all night thinking about it and decided that I needed to do something to help animals like her.” The dog, a mastiff/boxer mix named Angel, not only survived, but now lives with Matt and his two other rescued dogs, pit bulls Bella and Chocolate. 5 A Herculean Effort Our Investigators recently received a tip about a foul odor coming from an apartment. Upon entering, they found an emaciated dog in dreadful living conditions. The dog had no food or water and was living in a crate filled with urine, feces and blood. Matt Schaecher, Lead HSHV Cruelty Investigator, and a healthy Hercules. Matt is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of cases of animal abuse and neglect in Washtenaw County. “We are so fortunate to have Matt leading the team. His skills are perfectly matched for this challenging position, and his passion for and dedication to protecting vulnerable animals is unsurpassed. We’ve seen the number of criminal charges against alleged abusers double under his helm”, says Tanya Hilgendorf, HSHV Executive Director. Matt says the best part of his job is seeing an abused animal months later in a loving home, although a close second would be hearing a judge tell a suspect they have been found guilty of animal cruelty. Thanks to Matt and his team, hundreds of abused and suffering animals have had the chance to find that new home. Case Updates - Fighting Animal Cruelty September 2009 - Animal Control brought a dog with an embedded chain to HSHV. Cruelty Investigators located the owner who is awaiting trial in May. The little guy was in a dire state. He was skin and bones. He could not stand. He had sores covering his feet, legs and trunk. He also had several abrasions on his head as well as ulcers on his lips. We gave him a warm bath, medicine, and good food. He curled up on a fluffy comforter fresh from the dryer. We were not sure that he would make it through the night, but he greeted us the next morning with a wagging tail. He has since been named “Hercules” and he spends a good amount of time with his saving angels in the Cruelty & Rescue office. He has gained almost 20 lbs. and continues to make strides at the shelter. One of his favorite activities—going on walks while carrying his stuffed turtle. We can only help abused and neglected animals, like Hercules, because of supporters like you. Our Animal Cruelty & Rescue Department is 100% funded by donations. Please consider a gift to this important work by visiting www.hshv.org or calling 734-661-3525. December 2009 - Investigators worked undercover with law enforcement to purchase 2 dogs, believed to be used for dog fighting. Two men were arrested in connection with the sale and awaiting trial in mid April. May 2009 - Investigators responded to a call and found a severely emaciated female pit bull chained to a tree with no food or water. Octavia Lewis was found guilty of animal cruelty on April 15, 2010. February 2010 - Eric Rutley pled guilty to felony animal torture on February 5, 2010. He was sentenced to 2-4 years in prison with no credit for time already served. He was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $8335.00 for the care and medical expenses of Brownie. Leni is everything we could ever ask for and much more. It was almost as if she had always lived in our home, a bond was made immediately. Leni has brought so much joy to our lives, and I’m more than positive the feeling is mutual on her end. Leni spends her days playing with her toy mice, running in and out of her pink & orange tunnel, chasing her laser light, watching out the window, and napping in all of her favorite spots (mostly in our laps). Thank you so much for all you do at the shelter, your team is remarkable! If it wasn’t for you guys we would not have our Leni... Andrea Sawyer & Elizabeth Pangborn S Alice Just wanted to let you know that I could not be happier with Miss Alice! She is so adorable and fun to just let hop around. She’s really enjoying all the free time outside of the cage. She’s adjusting well and even getting use to all the yarn and knitted goods around. Published by the Cassidy Wieschowski S Otis Just wanted to let everybody know that Otis “The Road Warrior” is doing awesome in his new home. It took him a while to get over his little upper respiratory infection, but once he did he sure kicked it up a notch! He loves to eat, follow us around the house, eat some more, let the dogs know whose boss, and just relaxing in his new digs. Thank you very much for everything that you guys (and gals) do. We attached a picture of Otis on the “kitty condo” looking as handsome as ever. Published by the Chris and Becky McNulty S Slinky I wanted you to know that my new dog Walter (formerly named Slinky) that I got from the Humane Society of Huron Valley on Feb 7th, is a wonderful, kind and gentle dog, and is doing great! He loves his new bed, his cat sister and brother, his tiny dachshund cousin, going for walks, rides in the car and of course his new mom! It is so refreshing to bring home a dog that is already house trained and obeys commands so that we can concentrate all of our energy on getting to know and love each other.
