President’s Message
By Mike Sussman
Welcome to April, It will soon be cruising season again. Shine up your
ride and take it for a spin. I will be looking forward to learning to drive a Model T, that is if
my cousin ever gets the part.
This year's Easter Parade was nice. It looked to me that were less cars than years past. I did
see many club members in attendance. Neil was looking at 1940's cars. How did they install
headliners? Jim Barnes had a very nice Packard Victoria. Lou Sasso looked very dapper in period clothing. Just the thing for his Roadster. Artie and Paul gave out club flyers. Dick
Creeron, John Cunnane, past President Bill Funk all present. I managed to lose my wife and
dog for a while. My dog was happy to see me return.
I will be in Florida visiting my Mom in April. I hope to see everyone in May.
Mike
From The Editor’s Desk
By Keith Gramlich
The younger generation uses the “texting” term: “OMG!!”. In my case, I find
myself saying it as well, however, my meaning is “OPEN MY GARAGE”!!
I am really itching now to get the Studebaker out, and almost did so yesterday,
but realized I only had about 2 hours to do so, and that’s where my 50 year old discipline had
to give my inner child a reality “spanking” and teach me some patience. I still need to change
the oil, clean off the grease that has accumulated on the parking brake band, pump up the tires,
charge the battery, clean the sediment bowl on the fuel pump...well, you get the idea. I realize I
need to do some maintenance insurance, so I can have a safe and reasonably reliable touring
year.
Have you made your “touring” list? The members of the Nash Car Club of America did theirs
and I will be reprinting themin a future issue. Not a bad idea at all, and perhaps you all can add
to the list. These are items you should have in your car, for the possibility of a breakdown
event, including tools, spare parts, and even a sandwich, so if you can’t fix it, you can at least
eat!

April Pavement
Happenings
by Docair Jerry Malkes
I always look forward to The Garden City
Chamber of Commerce Vintage Car Parade
for a number of reasons. First, it proves to me
"old man winter" has finally ended and a new
car season has arrived. Secondly, Spring is
awakening it's beauty once again. Third, it
provides me and others the opportunity to
dust off our glorious hobby cars and enjoy
them with the public. Fourth and especially
my greatest reason, to see my car friends
again. This winter has been especially harsh
to many people because of Hurricane Sandy.
Many of us have lost our homes, prized possessions and especially some of us, our glorious cars. I have such heartfelt sorrow and
wish everyone good tidings from now on.
This was the 58th Annual Parade. I counted
the days till this day rolled around and was
thrilled when it did. This parade has every
conceivable mode of vehicle transportation
known. I was especially surprised to see a vehicle from the Brass Era. Even one of Mr.
Greco's vast collection consisted of an early
Electric car. I could not count the number of
autos that were there. Everyone was more
beautiful from the next. For a whole week,
rain was predicted to drown out the parade.
Mother Nature made sure that it was a comfortable morning and afternoon for the event
to go on without weather problems.
So many great car shows are happening this
year. I just can't wait to see my friends again
and especially at the GNYR's Queens Farmhouse and the Old Westbury show.
Good health to all.

“1929 Model A Ford Tudor” Owned by Harry Verity
This month's cover car belongs to Harry and Caroline Verity. Hailing from "Lynbrook
U.S.A.", Harry and Caroline have been members some 8-9 years now, and have been attending meets in their 1929 Model A for about 3 years or so. The car belonged to Harry's
father, who purchased the car about 18 years ago. Harry's Mom found the car for sale in the
local Pennysaver, and found out the car had been a local Lynbrook car for a while. The car
was originally from Pennsylvania, but when the original owner couldn't care for it any
longer, a relative of the original owner brought it up to Lynbrook, and gave it some restoration help.
The car has been running very well, and has not given any problems. In fact, Harry just had
the car at this year's Easter Parade in Garden City. He has also shown the car at Old Westbury Gardens, Sagamore Hill, Lynbrook Atria and Greis Park "Expo" meets.
Some unusual points Harry told me about the car, are that the tail light is mounted to the
body, rather than on the fender, which signifies that this is an early '29 model. Also, Harry
pointed out that on the engine block, where the engine number is, it says "Ford" next to it.
Neither Harry, nor anyone else have seen anything like this before on a Model A. Another
interesting thing happened when Harry and his Dad went to check the rear brakes and
drums, and went through 3 wheel pullers trying to find the correct size for both wheels, as
each wheel takes a different puller and has a different hub. Harry later met a guy in New
Hyde Park who also had a '29 Model A, and tried to help him with his rear wheels and
found the same thing. Later, when the same guy bought another '29 Model A, Harry brought
all three pullers again for the same reason. They have not figured out why yet.
Since then, Harry has become quite adept at Model A Fords. He once noticed a crowd
around a Model A at a meet. The owner could not get the car running right and all these
guys were trying to figure it out. Harry noticed that the timing cover looked to be from a
1932 Model B, which is slightly different from the A and puts about 10 degrees more on the
timing. The owner admitted he put this cover on because it was cleaner and nicer looking,
and it looked to be the same thing as the Model A cover. Upon Harry's insistence, the owner
put the original cover back on and had no more trouble with the car, and thanked Harry at
the next meet as Harry saved the man a lot of grief!
Eastern Division Spring Meet
May 30 - June 1, 2013 · Carlisle, PA
The Eastern Division Spring Meet in Carlisle promises to be a huge meet this
year so don't miss out. The Gettysburg Region has placed an emphasis on recognizing Pennsylvania built vehicles. If you own one, be sure to register before the
deadline on April 30. Speaking of registering, the registration card might confuse you. The question after Vehicle Registration on the card states Pennsylvania Vehicle yes or no and strictly refers whether the car was manufactured in
the Keystone state. Download a brouchure by going to this website:

Old Car JunkYards
by John Linhardt
Ex-member Don Gilbert and Myself have combed Junk-Yards from Augusta, Maine to Hayward California. The fever started when Don was going to school in Coral Gables, Florida
and found a 1941 Buick "Super" convertible in a yard and got it running, and drove it to New
York on his summer break. Together through the years, we owned three cars we resurrected
out of junk-yards and restored, one to an AACA National prize winner coming out of a
wrecking yard in Phillipsburg, New Jersey.
In our own back yard, Nassau County, there was the Denton Avenue junk yards. In Queens,
many yards on Liberty Avenue, Jamaica, east of the Van Wyck Expressway. Again, Don
found a 1953 Olds Convertible at Neils Wrecking, that he fixed and sold. Going West in
Queens, on 101st Avenue, there were several more yards. Then on to Pennsylvania Avenue,
Brooklyn, were acres and acres of wrecked cars and parts. Don found parts for his 1941
Buick there.
All boros had junk yards, even in upper NYC., but those cars were quickly "Cut-up" due to
storage, but the popular auto parts were saved. Generator/Starter rebuild firms depended on
these removed parts for stock rebuild, then they got your old parts (core) back to rebuild
those again.
The most popular classic car salvage yard was at 635 S. Columbus Avenue, Mount Vernon,
NY, Owned by Sam Adelman. He started in the Bronx, but ran out of room when other
wrecking yards called him to take an old car. I wrote about Sam previously, but he was "Oneof-a-kind". His inventory of parts was in his head and only cars of the '20's, 30's and early
'40's. His specialty was Rolls Royce. Sam stored it all. Hood ornaments, motor meters, dash
gauges, engines transmissions, rims, bumpers, headlights, tail lenses, etc. Sam knew what to
buy, what sold, and parts to him were not "junk", but some else's treasures. He sold parts all
over the world. I visited him often, but you must come early like his insistance "before the
chickens got up", and he was serious as he lived all alone in a home on 233rd Street in the
Bronx. Sam was a real "Classic"
