Creighton School Newsletter December 2015-February 2016 Administration Message Happy New Year and Welcome Back! As we embark on 2016, please take time to reflect on your student’s school experience so far. The New Year provides an opportunity to re-focus on what has been achieved and what still needs to be accomplished. With this is mind; th th grade 7-12 Final/Midterm Exams are scheduled for January 25 -28, please make sure that you are aware of the dates and times of your child’s exams to ensure that your child is sufficiently preparing. A couple friendly reminders as we return back from the break: as we all know; the weather in our area can become quite cold in the next few months and it is imperative that students are dressed appropriately as they do go outside at recesses and lunch times. Also, if if you are going to drop off your child/children, please be aware that there is no supervision until 8:35am and that the students are not to enter the school before 8:45am. We would like to thank Mr. Joe Kowalchuck for many years of service to Creighton Community School and its students and families. We wish Joe a very happy and deserved retirement. With the retirement of Joe, we would like to welcome Tiffany Ealey as our new Middle Years/High School counselor. We would like also to officially welcome Mr. Dylan Toms as our new ELA 10 and Grade 5 teacher. Mr. Toms is taking over for Ms. Kirsten Fritsch for the remainder of the year while she is on maternity leave. Please make sure that you review the monthly calendar in the newsletter as there are many important dates throughout the month that you should be aware of. A few of these important dates are: the final/midterm exams, the Senior Girls Basketball Tournament (please come cheer on our Kodiaks), and the school closure day(s). As always, we feel that effective communication between school personnel and families is a critical component for fostering successful academic performance. Any time you have questions or concerns, you can call or you can email teachers, counselors, or administrators. Sincerely, Mr. Straile Upcoming Events Creighton School Newsletter 2 Athletics Volleyball Creighton hosted the year end Junior Volleyball tournament in December. Our single boy’s team and two girl’s teams did very well and had a great time doing it. Thank you to Jessie Manns who ran the boys side of the tournament at Creighton and to Jason Straile for being there to help out. This tournament brought an end to the volleyball season. I can’t give a big enough thank you to all of the coaches, managers, chaperones who helped out over the course of this season. We had over 90 students participate in grade 5-12 volleyball - hosted three tournaments, and participated in 15 tournaments over the course of 3 months. This would not be possible without a lot of time and dedication by amazing volunteers. So thank you - our students are very lucky to have you. -Mr. Trumbley Basketball In December, Creighton hosted their annual Senior Boys Border Bash tournament. Our boys came in fourth place. Our Senior Girls team placed 4th at a tournament in Birch Hills and won the B-side final in Perdue. Junior Basketball is in full swing. Next weekend (Jan 15-16) is the 9th annual SR girls Kit Klassic. We have 8 teams participating. Come on out and support the teams, we look forward to seeing you! Cross-Country Running Back in October, three students competed in Flin Flon for their Cross Country zones. Derek Koivisto, Evan Madarash and Greg Morin represented Creighton School. Derek Koivisto came in 1st for his age division and Greg Morin came in 6th in his heat, but 3rd out of his grade. Coaches: Kerrilynn Behrman & Carol Sutherland Creighton School Newsletter 3 Around the school Season of Joy December was a busy month at Creighton School. We celebrated the Christmas season by having our annual Santa Store. Students were able to purchase gifts for 25 cents for their families. Thank you to all of the volunteers and to those who donated gently used items. The Santa Store is great way for students to experience the gift of giving! The Festival of Trees was a success! Thanks to our community for supporting our grads through the Grad Bake Sale, Breakfast with Santa, and the Grad Tea. Staff at the school hosted their annual Feast at the Band Hall in Denare Beach. We had a great turn out for turkey and all the fixings. Thanks to everyone who came out. Also thanks to Joe Kowalchuk for setting up the tipi with the help of students from the school. Our Christmas Concert was another success this year. Students from Pre-K to Grade 6 did well up on the stage singing Christmas songs. We enjoyed band students from Grade 8 playing carols at the beginning of the show as well as junior high students singing carols in between classes. The show ended with a fantastic performance by the Creighton School Choir directed by Vanessa Unrau. A big thank you to Mrs. Nickerson for organising another charming concert! Creighton School Newsletter 4 Grade 5PH Science In November, 5PH was learning about the properties of matter. Here are some grade 5's experimenting with different types of matter. They made a volcano, play dough, and they even made Oobleck! Hunger Heroes Along with other schools in our area, the Grade 9 students at CCS partnered with Northland Ford for the We Scare Hunger campaign. Students gathered non-perishable food items from elementary classrooms. All of the donations from all the schools in our area filled the backs of 3 ½ tonne Ford trucks. All items collected were donated to the Lord’s Bounty Food Bank. Creighton School Newsletter 5 A picture is worth 1000 words...
