content in any manner is prohibited.
The paper is distributed free through its advertisers and selected tourist
information centers, but subscriptions are offered at $18 per year (P&H), single copy $3.
The Country Register began in Arizona in the fall of 1988 to provide effective and affordable advertising
for shops, shows and other experiences enjoyed by a kindred of readership. Since then, the paper has
spread to many other areas, all of which are listed below. Look for the paper in your travels. To receive a
sample paper from another area, mail $3 in the USA or $4 in Canada to that area's editor. Advertising rates
are available upon request. If there is not a paper in your state, and you are interested in publishing a paper,
contact the editor of the Arizona paper at (602) 942-8950. The Country Register is available at the shops
that advertise and often at other unique locations. We hope you enjoy this bi-monthly publication and
let the advertisers know.
USA
Dear Readers Hello! Glad you picked up a copy of the Country Register!
In this issue we have included several feature articles on shops around the
state and one that has been honored by a national publication.
Congratulations to Homestead Collection in Findlay for being honored by
Country Business Magazine as 2010 Retailer of the Year Finalist. We are
so lucky here in Ohio to have a wonderful selection of many fine shops.
As our Christmas gift to you, we’ve also teamed up with Gooseberry
Patch, Judy Condon and Lydia Harris to promote their latest book
releases. They’ve been generous enough to donate copies of their books
for us to give away to our readers! Be sure to mail in your entries soon we’ve set the due date as December 1st so we’ll be able to get the prizes
out to the winners before Christmas. If you’re not lucky enough to win
one of the books, keep in mind that any of these books would make great
gifts and information is included with the articles so you can go online or
call to order copies for your gift giving.
Many special holiday activities have been planned for the upcoming
months. Be sure to check out the listing of local shows and events on
page 3. And, speaking of local - something we always promoted is the
350 Project. Check out the listing on page 21. Pick three, spend $50 Save your local economy! For more information visit the350project.net.
Happy Holidays!

We Can Do That... SUBSCRIPTIONS
The Country Register is distributed as a complimentary gift from

convenience of those who may not be able to get to a shop, we do
offer subscriptions for $18.00 per year (Continental U.S.) to cover
the cost of postage and handling.

Miller House Antiques
As so many of us did, Linda and Ralph Miller received old furniture from
their families to start their housekeeping when they got married. Tables
from aunts, a bed from grandma & grandpa which they also started their
housekeeping with, etc. Through the years they became aware of the
value of these pieces as they attended antique shows and became
interested in antiques. So interested, in fact, that they eventually started
selling at a shop in Powell and a couple of Columbus shows.
Through these experiences they made many friends in the antique
business. The Millers visited many of their friends’ log homes which were
furnished in 18th and 19th century antiques. This is how their love affair
with early American antiques was launched. Linda says she probably
loves it more than Ralph as his love is his 1950 Chevy pickup truck!
In 1966 they purchased the log cabin on Slough Road in Carroll. It had
been moved from its original site between the Licking and Muskingum
Rivers in Zanesville where it was built as a trading post with the Indians in
1806. The Millers cannot take credit for moving it, but they have
enhanced the grounds and the cabin, tweaking it more every year. (A
photo of the buttery in the cabin is featured on our cover.) In 2003 they
opened their shop, Miller House Antiques, on the grounds next to their
cabin.
The shop is open by appointment or special events because they still spend
a lot of time selling at shows, except for November 5 through Christmas
when their regular hours will be Wednesday through Saturdays 10am to
5pm. Their latest venture is to promote country primitive shows - watch
for their ads for Homesteaders on the Prairie, Winter in the Valley,
Country Gathering at Springfield, and their primitive show at their home
in June.
Miller House Antiques will host their Christmas Open House, along with
Buggy Seat Antiques in Canal Winchester, on Friday, November 5 from
10 am to 7 pm and Saturday, November 6 from 10 am to 5 pm. (See their
ad on page 6.) For more information, contact Linda Miller at 614-8332521, email her at [email protected], or check the website
at www.picturetrail.com/millerhouseantiques.

Dear Country Register Readers & Travelers,
Today was one of those sunny fall days that
you don't want to waste so I was so glad that
my friends and I had planned to get together
and do something fun for the whole day. I was
in charge of picking the destination so with my Country Register in hand we
were off to the country to get pumpkins, apples, cider, Indian corn and of course
check out a new store I found in the Country Register.
We headed toward a shop I had never been to before and you know I haven't been
without my Country Register for years so this new shop to me was really special
and so unexpected. Driving through the country with the leaves changing on this
beautiful sunny day was such a nice inexpensive way to have fun and share the
day with friends.
We went through North Lima and found E. Pine Lake Rd and Piney Creek
Primitives.
The shop is set back off the road and there is no sign but turn in the drive anyway
and you will see the wonderful Piney Creek Primitives building filled with all
sorts of primitive finds and antiques right by the barn.
The store is filled with great jar lights, primitive candles, antiques displayed in old
cupboards and my favorite the wonderful dolls and other fabric primitives made
by the owner, Debbie Forgac. Debbie is so talented and has a great eye for
primitive details. She has published books of her painted primitives to offer also.
The calendar of Simple Things was really different and would look great in any
primitive home. Debbie made us all feel so welcome and comfortable in her shop.
Piney Creek Primitives is open on Friday and Saturday and well worth the trip.
Debbie also hosts a “Gathering” in August with vendors of primitive handmades
and antiques out on her lawn that is a beautiful setting for her primitive home and
business. Be sure to watch upcoming Country Registers for the date and time and
her Holiday Open House.
This is the time of the year that we prepare for the coming holidays and I hope that
all of you have a wonderful holiday season.
And of course don't forget our animal friends. If you can't foster for a rescue group
than volunteer to help show the homeless pets at a showing for an afternoon or
donate whatever you can afford to your favorite local rescue group. The economy
has made it rough for the rescue groups and the homeless pets so if you can put
one group on your holiday giving list this year I thank you.
Happy Holidays to you and your family and friends and of course I'll see you in
the New Year.

“Playing With Heart Strings “
By Maggie Chicoine
This is the story of a remarkable woman who plays with your heart strings. She left a
larger urban center to relocate in a remote retirement community way up north. You
might say that Elliot Lake is in the middle of nowhere, though the locals would argue
that this little place is the center of the Universe. She and her husband chose an offbeat,
comfortable and brilliantly idyllic place to start new careers. In a very short time, she
made her mark on the folks around her, almost as if she were wearing magnets in her
pockets to attract strangers into her magical sphere.
So let me introduce you to Ann, the self-made music teacher, entrepreneur and Bed and
Breakfast host. Ann is the kind of person who is nonchalant about her shining success in
the music business. Sitting around her kitchen table in the B&B, her story builds as she
tells it. She sounds as if starting two companies simultaneously would be a natural step
for just anyone. Ann says, “Opening both the B&B and developing the music classes
was a one night decision. It was a natural. Then it was a crazy exciting summer in
2007.”
What she adds is, that word of mouth - the musical variety - proved that if you build it,
they will come! The B&B was busy from the get go, and suddenly Ann also found
herself responding to a request to lead an acapella chorus of men and women. She had
training as a Suzuki piano teacher, but… a chorus? Well, why not! Then came the call
from the Doctor's wife, asking her to teach her kids the violin. Another inquired about
guitar lessons, and someone else for vocal coaching. Ann adds, “I didn't have a piece of
paper as qualifications, especially for voice lessons, but I went for it anyway.”

We are a must see shop!
She bought one set of chimes for her first Christmas concert and suddenly a chime choir
appeared. She encouraged people who had old trumpets, hidden for years under their
beds, to drag them out or donate their saxophones and clarinets to make music again.
This turned into a community band. Somehow, a “psaltry” appeared on her doorstep,
and she quickly discovered that this ancient triangle tunes like a piano and it's played
with a bow. She wrote a counter melody for her daughter to sing, and found that its
haunting sounds filled the church and brought the congregation to new levels of
appreciation.
The students loved Ann instantly! They learned how to perform, smile on stage and
create harmony in more than just the musical sense. A cello emerged almost out of thin
air. Ann added violins, forming a string ensemble. She was composing a “variety pack”
of melody that captured the town's children and elders in an invisible blanket of high
notes.
Her studio grew and grew. With each new venture, she bought more chairs and rearranged the rooms. Then she bought the whole building. Her philosophy of
collaborating with the community brought her into informal partnerships, such as the
music store on the corner which sells the instruments, aka “hardware”. Sales of guitars
and drums increased, and then Ann stumped her colleague with a request for a surprise
instrument - the ukelele. How many of these tiny things could he find for her?
Ukeleles in northern Ontario? Thanks to one of her “studio rats” who was fascinated by
a U-tube video with outrageous ukelele tunes, Ann stuck a sign in her Sweet Music
window inviting everyone to kick back and sign up for summer. Ukelele's have been
the hottest instrument in the world for the past couple of years and the trend swept
through this town faster than a Hawaiian breeze. Suddenly, the class was filled and a
public performance was booked for their graduation in August. People who had never
played any kind of instrument, mastered the strings and tiptoed their way through the
lessons.
Ann had no intention of building this musical extravaganza when she loaded up the
moving van three short years ago. Her passion was shiny, her energy revved and she put
her all into living life to the fullest. She was playing with her heart strings, so that we
could finally play with ours. I can hardly wait to find out what she's up to next. Aren't
you?
Maggie Chicoine's first love is the stage, but her passion is the page. Maggie is a keynote speaker,
master coach and professional writer. She uses a twist of ingenuity and a keen sense of finding the
amazing and unusual in her work and in her life. Her column, “Creative Confessions” is written
for The Country Register (Canada and USA). 2010. Reach her at 1 800 587 1767 or

Owner Sherie Dull transformed this
location when she opened the shop
back in August of 2007. It took a lot of help and support from her family
and friends, but she transformed the store into a very primitive setting,
featuring items that are handmade by
herself, her mother, Carole Rausch, and
other consignees. Also featured
throughout the shop are American made
products and antiques.
The shop is laid out in primitive room
settings which are sure to inspire your
period decorating instincts. Sherie
makes it easy for you to add to your own
collection by offering a wonderful
variety of handmade goods including
dolls and Santas, grungy candles and
candle holders, textiles, lanterns,
reproduction wood boxes, and
reproduction furniture. She also carries a nice collection of antiques.

It’s Christmas - Lighten Up!
by Pat Dempsey
Christmas is the one time of the year that I feel it is really important
to add special lighting effects all around my home. From the outside
to the inside there is nothing that
seems quite as festive as lighting.
Isn't it amazing what they have done
with decorative lights for the
holidays? I remember growing up,
one of the most exciting things, was
the night my dad got those
Christmas lights up outside. They
were just regular old colored bulbs
and we all thought they were
wonderful.
Today you can find outside lighting
in almost any shape imaginable. You
can create a virtual winter wonderland in your yard and some people
try to do just that. I am all for the
simple, understated lights outside.
One of my favorite looks is to use a
spotlight to light up the front door.
Nothing looks more inviting than a
beautiful front door and entryway. I
think this time of the year lends
itself to something a little different
for the front door. Not just the
wreath, but how about those old antique skis you have out in the
barn, or that great wood sled your from your childhood, or maybe
even those old ice skates? What a great conversation piece any of
these would be to decorate with a little pine, holly, possibly lights
and a beautiful red bow!!! There is something about Christmas that
takes us back in time and the front door is the perfect place to do
that.
The ambiance of candles and the aroma of the wonderful smells
really make it seem like Christmas. So don't be afraid to add those
candles to the mantle, the coffee table, the kitchen hutch the dining
room table, the vanity in the bathroom and just about any other
place you can find. Using the same fragrance of candle throughout
the house really makes a fragrance statement.
Battery operated candles are great to avoid fires. They are
wonderful and come in many different fragrances and sizes. Check
out my AtHome America website for them. We call them “Forever
Glow” candles.
Something new and fun for the holidays are lighted twigs that you

floral arrangements, in the greenery on the mantle, or in a vase all by themselves. But they are a fun way to “Lighten Up” your home this Christmas.
Just close your eyes and imagine what your home is going to look like this
Christmas with the scent of those candles burning and all the fun lights both
inside and out. Have a wonderful Christmas and remember “Jesus is the

Blue Elephant Creations
This holiday season there is a way to purchase gifts with a double meaning – gifts that
give to the one receiving them and that also give back to fund a need. Blue Elephant
Creations includes Holiday cards and stationery in its line of primarily children’s gifts.
Many of the items will make wonderful shower, birthday, or new baby gifts as well as
for holiday giving.
Each gift from this wonderful collection has a special meaning to givers and receivers
alike, as a portion of the proceeds are donated to a foundation for children with autism.
Through your purchases you are helping create a brighter future for the many children
battling autism.
The products available from Blue Elephant Creations are all adorned with designs that
autistic artist Tristan Bramblett created at age five. His whimsical designs add an extra
special touch to the collection of gift items, infant wear, stationery, and ornaments in
the Blue Elephant Collection of products. The items are reasonably priced and
definitely one of a kind and fit any occasion. The products are offered online at
www.blueelphantcreations.com.
Please go to the web site and read Tristan’s Story. It will uplift you and give you a new
understanding of what parents and these special children face in our world. Such a
simple way to help – check out the products and match them to your holiday gift list. It
will lift your heart and isn’t this the true meaning of Christmas – giving with your
heart. The Blue Elephant vision is to ultimately establish the Blue Elephant Foundation
which will provide education, support and therapy scholarships to help children
battling the lonely world of autism.

National Honor for Homestead Collection
Congratulations to Homestead Collection for being named a
Country Business Retailer of the Year Finalist!
Homestead Collection is located off County Road 99, Findlay,
Ohio. The Schey family, Kreg
and Bonnie, and their daughters
Michelle Schroeder, Carey
Spitnale and Sarah Steffan, have
all worked together over the past
15 years to build the family
business to what it is today. They
started with a two-story timber
frame structure with an expansive
front porch and dormer windows.
Over the years they have added an
assortment of old farm buildings,
a wide array of merchandise to
make this 10,000 square foot little village a successful
business. Customers can’t help but feel welcome in this
environment.
Many shoppers mark their
calendars for the store’s four
annual events: spring open house
in April, summer porch sale in
July, fall open house on Labor
Day weekend, and the Christmas
open house in November. For the
holiday event, the entire family
pitches in to reconfigure the store
with Christmas decor and new merchandise. The transformation
takes about two weeks, during which time frequent shoppers
often stop in for a peek.
However, some special
items and one-of-a-kind
pieces are held back
until the day of the sale
for added anticipation.

- Belpre - Cambridge New Simply Country Books
It's been six years since Judy
Condon wrote her first book,
Country on a Shoestring, and there
seems to be no end in sight for the
“simply country” book series.
Judy's books have become collector
items and everyone is collecting the
entire series! Last September, Judy's
holiday book for 2010, Simple
Greens, became number twelve and
it, like the other eleven, is selling
out fast..
Judy's books have created a forum
for country collectors and are filled
with page after page of color
photographs. .
Judy's next book, The Country Life,
will be available at the end of
November. She has five books
planned in 2011. The first in
February, Simply Country Gardens,
will be a book containing over 550
photographs of just country gardens.
In May, The Spirit of Country will be available, The Joy of Country in
July, Holidays at a Country Home in September and A Touch of Country
in November.
Look for Judy's books in your favorite country shop or visit her website
www.marshhomesteadantiques.com for more information. The toll free
number for ordering is 877-381-6682 or order online.

The Country Register, Nov/Dec 2010
- Wheelersburg Finding YOUR Design Style
by Julie Fergus
Instead of trying to duplicate someone else's elegant interior, create a list
of the things that are important to making your life easier, functional,
attractive and a reflection of YOU!
Do away with the fantasy of holiday dinners served at a ten-foot farm
table if you don't have room for a ten-foot table. Let go of the thought of
white-on-white decor if your house is teeming with kids and pets. The
first rule of home decorating is to know YOURSELF! Make your home
accommodate your real everyday life.
HOW TO DO IT:
Take a realistic view of how you and your family use your house - every
day, not just on holidays or when company is coming - everyday!
Don't buy anything unless it meets your functional needs first.
Organize! Throw out what you don't need. Keep what defines you.

Have a Plan! Create a theme for the whole house.
Prioritize! Start with the room that's most important to you and make it
your own.
Determine a budget no matter how big or how small. This will define
your choices.
Take on one room or one problem at a time then move on to the next and
the next.
If you're not sure of your choices, ask your family and friends for
opinions, then do what you think is the best!
And remember, many interior designers offer consultations to help steer
you in the right direction, so don't hesitate to ask for help.
Getting started is the hard part. Getting into it is the fun part. And seeing
it finished is pure joy itself!
Julie Fergus, ASID, is a nationally published interior designer. Her studio
and showroom is located in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Julie's clients are
primarily in the Lakes Region and Mount Washington Valley, however, she
will travel throughout the state and North East. www.JulieFergus.com |
