Well it will be this
weekend
for
recentlyinducted Subiaco Diehard
Marc Webb.
Last week Webb became
a member of the Lions
respected Diehard fraternity
By Tracey Lewis
alongside Allistair Pickett,
Aidan Parker, Luke Newick
and Chad Cossom.
In 2000, Subiaco’s 100th year in the State league
competition, the club recognised 100 people who
had significantly contributed to the welfare and
perpetuity of the club. They became known as
Diehards, the name used by Dr Ken Spillman as the
title to the book which depicts the club’s rich history.
Every five years since then another five names
have been added to the honour roll.
“It’s fantastic to see the Diehards tradition grow.
Since it’s been established it’s been great for our
heritage and the people involved understand the
importance of it,” said Subiaco CEO Peter Capes.
“The Diehards represent the Hall of Fame for the
Subiaco Football Club and its fantastic watching
people embrace it.”
While Webb graciously accepted his induction in
front of fellow Diehards, club stalwarts and members,
his focus had to quickly shift to finding ways for his
midfield to overcome that of the powerful Lions in
this Saturday’s game.
This Saturday he will be working as an assistant
coach with third-placed Peel Thunder to help plot
the downfall of ladder-leaders Subiaco.
Webb, a four-time premiership player and
three-time premiership captain with the Lions and
a premiership coach with Claremont in 2012, was
recruited by Fremantle as a development coach at
the end of the 2013 WAFL season.
“The best part was being inducted with four
guys who were a great part of my career,” said Webb
of being named as a Subiaco Diehard
“Being back with the boys was fantastic. Being so
heavily involved in football my weekends are pretty
much gone so I don’t see them as often anymore,
but when we do it’s a nice chance to reminisce.
“Time goes so fast that, to be honest, sometimes
you forget what you did. Nights like that help remind
you what you were part of and watching highlight
videos brings back some great memories.”
Webb said when he first started coaching
Claremont he found it tough when they came up
against his old side the first few times. But as he
prepares to be in the opposition coaches box again
this weekend he said it was something he has had to
get used to.
“To be honest, in the first game I coached for
Claremont against Subiaco I found myself tracking
Lions players instead of my own, but I clicked back
into who I should be watching pretty quickly.
“I will always have a strong attachment to
Subiaco but on game day I’ve got a job to do and I’m
really enjoying it.”
Subiaco won their sixth game from their first
seven outings in season 2015 when they toppled
the Thunder by 60 points in Round 8.
However, the Thunder have been one of the
big improvers this year and Webb expects a closer
contest this time around as his team strives to play
finals for the first time in its 19-season history.
“It was really disappointing the last time we
played,” 36-year-old Webb said of the Round 8 clash.
“We’ve learned a lot from that game and while
Subiaco have been the benchmark team this season,
we expect this to be a cracking game.”
Webb said the Thunder hadn’t yet spoken about
the possibility of playing finals for the first time in
club history. Instead he said their focus has been on
constant improvement.
“The reality is that there is not much between us
in third right down to 6th, 7th and 8th,” he said.
“If we get caught looking too far ahead to finals
now we’ll slip right up.”

The 2015 Diehards:
MARC WEBB -- A four-time premiership
player for the Subiaco Lions and one of the
most consistent midfielders in the club’s
history. Webb started his football career at
Port Melbourne in 2000 before plying with
Perth in the WAFL in 2001. After 20 games
at Perth he moved to Subiaco who were
in the midst of a premiership push. The
midfielder fitted seamlessly into the Lions
and contributed heavily to Subiaco’s 2004
premiership success and the subsequent
“Glory Years”. Webb was named captain of
the Lions in 2005 and won the Simpson
Medal for best on ground in Subiaco’s 2006
premiership triumph.
After 176 games and eight years of service to
the Lions, Webb hung up the boots to focus
on coaching. He served as an assistant coach
for Subiaco in 2011 before moving to the
head role at Claremont.
Webb now serves as an assistant coach for
Ross Lyon at Fremantle.
ALLISTAIR PICKETT – One of the most
dynamic WAFL players of the 21st century with
his story of determination and persistence an
inspiration to the Subiaco faithful and WA
football community. Pickett originally got his
chance at West Perth where he played three
games before a knee reconstruction derailed his footballing dreams. After doubting
himself Pickett was drawn back into football
at the Narrogin Eagles in 1999 and enjoyed a
dominant, injury-free year. After impressing
for Narrogin the little master gave the WAFL
another crack at Peel. With a beautiful kick
and deceptive speed, Pickett burst onto the
WAFL scene to win his first Sandover Medal
as a Thunder player in 2002. He moved to
the Subiaco Lions in 2003 where he would
eventually gather four WAFL premierships.
Pickett won his second Sandover Medal at
the Lions in 2004. After eight years at the
Lions, Pickett retired and left his legacy.
The club champion was later honoured as a
Subiaco FC Life Member and a member of the
Subiaco FC Team of the Century.
LUKE NEWICK -- One of Subiaco’s most
decorated players, the ruckman won four
league premierships and three reserves
premierships. Newick was the definition of
persistence, eventually earning his place in
the league side during the 2004 premiership
season. He then played a pivotal part in the
Lions consecutive premierships, operating
as the number one ruckman in the 2004,
2006, 2007 and 2008 successes. Newick also
represented WA on four occasions between
2005 and 2008. He finished his career with over
2000 hit-outs throughout his 150-game career.
CHAD COSSOM -- A ball-magnet for the
Lions during his 214-game career honing his
craft on the wings.
Originally from Kingsley, Cossom broke
into the Lions league side in 2000 where he
played 16 games in his first season. After
the Lions assembled the pieces for a titleassault, Cossom won four premierships from
2004-2008. He had an insatiable work ethic
combined with an inept ability to transition
» Four of the five 2015 Diehards Chad Cossom,
Luke Newick, March Webb & Aidan Parker
» Marc Webb in his assistant
coaching role at Peel
the football, which made him an in-valuable
component of the Lions premiership sides.
The silky wingman gathered over 2500
touches in his career and was a dangerous
goalkicker of the run. The club legend called
it quits in 2011 to focus on his professional
career.
AIDAN PARKER -- Became a defensive
stalwart for the Lions throughout the 2000’s
and enjoyed considerable team and personal
success. The man known as ‘Shuff’ was a
hot talent when he appeared on Subiaco’s
roster in 2001, playing 36 games before
AFL club Adelaide showed interest. After
two years on the Crows list and frustrating
injury setbacks, Parker returned to Subiaco
amidst a premiership frenzy. The Lions
would unfortunately bow out in straight
sets in 2005 but had a side capable of
significant damage. Parker played every
game between 2006 and2009, including
consecutive premierships from 2006-2008.
After a considerable changeover of the Lions
list and Chris Waterman’s appointment as
coach Parker was named as the Lions captain
in 2010. He claimed the club Fairest and Best
in 2012 before retiring after 11 seasons and
three premierships.

Collectables
During 2015, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you
to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away
at home.
This week’s featured item is a little left-offield and I’ve only ever seen a couple of WAFL
versions in my years of collecting.
Back in the day when gentlemen wore
hats to the football, they also wore coloured
handkerchiefs in the pockets of their formal
wear.
And there were plenty of tailors and
drycleaners around town who saw this as an
opportunity to advertise their services.
Coloured fabric was stitched to the top
of an advertising card, to make it look like a
perfectly folded handkerchief (or two) was
slightly protruding from the top pocket of a
gentleman’s jacket.
The card usually included advertising for
the manufacturer.
Previously, I had only seen Victorian
versions of these advertising cards, but I
recently discovered two West Australian
versions, both featuring fabric in red-andblack for the Perth Football club.
The first included advertising for a tailor
named Les Sharp, who operated in Hay St in
the CBD. The other was for a drycleaner called
Parkers Dry Cleaners.
Though the Victorian versions do sell
surprisingly well, I can’t imagine the WAFL
versions would be worth much more than $20
apiece.
But they make a great talking point in my
collection and may even get worn next time I
attend a function at Lathlain Park.
It’s always great to meet other collectors
and this week I had the opportunity to look
over a collection of Swan Districts memorabilia
that belonged to Craig and his son Blake.
Craig started the collection back in the
1970s and had a huge stack of Football
Budgets dating back to that time.
Unfortunately, the value of Budgets from
the colour era (mid-70s onwards) has fallen
dramatically in the past year or so.
But Craig had some other magazines
that are probably worth a few bucks,
including 1980s editions of the WAFL Players
Association’s annual magazine The High & The
Mighty and some Fighting Swan magazines.
Craig had also kept his member tickets from
the early 80s and a 1981 junior member t-shirt.
Better still was the football he kept
from a 1981 game between Swans and
South Fremantle. The Burley footy bears the
Marlboro and Town & Country logos and
the signature of Craig’s childhood hero, Ron
Boucher.
Craig also had a 1980s Swans tea-towel
and four great newspaper poster that were
produced to celebrate the black ducks’
premierships in 1982 and 1983. These are
great and highly sought-after today, though I
wouldn’t advocate getting them signed.
Finally, he pulled out a couple of great
jumpers, one being a state jumper from the
early 1980s and the other a 1990 jumper worn
by premiership hero Greg Walker.
While the value may have disappeared
from most of the Budgets, the other items
would fetch reasonable prices at auction
should Craig ever decide to part with his
childhood memories.
Finally for this week, I have a backlog of
requests that I have promised to publish, so
have a dig through the boxes at home and see
if you can help any of the following collectors
with their collections.
Craig is very keen on a Swan Districts
mirror
and
Swans
drinking glasses from
any of the eight known
sets of glasses.
Darrell is
looking
for
West
Perth
mirrors, while
an anonymous
collector
is
keen on West
Perth badges from any era.
There are also plenty of collectors looking
for the WAFL drinking glasses at the moment,
so almost any glass featuring any club would
easily find a buyer. Those with caricature
logos are especially sought-after.
Last, but not least, I’m still looking for
a few club annual reports to complete my
collection back to 1980. Those I am after
are East Perth’s 1981 annual report, Swan
Districts’ 2012 report and the South Fremantle
reports for 1981, 1984 and 1991. The holes in
my collection are much bigger before 1980,
so please get in touch if you can help.
If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean
at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA
6904. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on

Paper Towns
(20th Century Fox)
Adapted from the bestselling novel by author John
Green (The Fault in Our Stars), Paper Towns is a
coming-of-age story centering on Quentin and his
enigmatic neighbor Margo, who loved mysteries so
much she became one.
After taking him on an all-night adventure through their
hometown, Margo suddenly disappears--leaving behind
cryptic clues for Quentin to decipher. The search leads
Quentin and his quick-witted friends on an exhilarating
adventure that is equal parts hilarious and moving.
Ultimately, to track down Margo, Quentin must find a deeper
understanding of true friendship--and true love.
Quentin Jacobson, or “Q,” is intelligent, a loyal friend and
a romantic. He’s seventeen years old and in his senior year
of high school. Q believes that everyone gets a miracle in
life and his came when he was nine, the day Margo Roth
Spiegelman moved in next door.
Margo was always an adventurer; Q, not so much. Over
the years Q has become best friends with Ben and Radar.
Margo, on the other hand, has become increasingly daring
and mysterious, and is now one of the ultra-cool kids in high
school. So, Q and Margo drifted apart.
One night, only a few weeks before prom, Margo shows
up at Q’s window and leads him on an all-night covert
adventure that Q is certain signals a` return to his friendship
– and maybe more – with the unrequited love of his life and
true soul mate. He knows his life is about to change. And it
does.
The next morning, Margo is gone. She has simply
disappeared and hasn’t left word with anyone. Or has she? Q
starts to find clues seemingly left just for him - signs of where
she went and why she left. By solving those clues, another
adventure begins. Q, with his friends Ben and Radar and with
their new friends Lacey and Angela, embark upon a journey
to track down Margo. In unraveling the mystery, Q discovers
the true meaning of friendship and the complexities of the
enigma that is Margo.
Paper Towns opens on July 16.

SWAN DISTRICTS V EAST PERTH
Forward Matt Rogers looms as a key weapon in Swan Districts’ quest to
return to the top five.
But to achieve the feat the boys from Bassendean have to get on the
right side of a Jekyll and Hyde East Perth at Steel Blue Oval.
At 186cm Rogers isn’t the black and whites’ main focal point but
his strong overhead marking and ability to find space have turned the
25-year-old into a valuable attacking zone selection.
He is Swans’ leading scorer in 2015 with 19 goals so the Royals know
they have to keep Rogers quiet if they are to claim the win.
Rogers had six inside 50 entries when the teams met last month
but East Perth emerged triumphant before almost 4000 people in ‘The
Valley’.
Alex Howard has been impressive for Swans in recent rounds while
Nathan Blakely has settled back
into the ruck after a belated start
» Matthew Rogers
to the season because of injury.
Victory is just as vital for
the Royals, who sit in sixth
underneath Swans because of an
ever-so-slight disadvantage in the
percentage column.
A
6-6
record
suitably
represents East Perth’s season.
The club has gone up and down
the ladder like a yo-yo. Another
loss could be devastating to finals
ambitions.
Steven Payne’s willingness
to work hard around the ground
should drive the Royals at such a
crucial time.
Swans’ Aaron Elari is down to
play his 100th WAFL match.

SUBIACO v PEEL
To butcher a quote from a past Prime Minister, it was the loss Subiaco
had to have.
Another might not be treated with such ease.
There are plenty of wise Lions heads, Kyal Horsley, Darren Rumble
and Brett Mahoney included, that will ensure the team’s mind is back
on the job in the clash with Peel.
The eight-game winning
streak is finished. Time for
the Lions to get back to work
because Peel has shown it is
more than capable of matching
it with the league leaders.
Goal practice might be one
area of strong concentration
for Subiaco. A scoreline of 5.14
proved costly in the loss to West
Perth.
Matthew Boland is back on
deck for the Lions and he will
steadily get back to peak form.
Charles Le Fanu is important in
defence for Subiaco while coach
Jarrad Schofield will also look to
Kyle Halligan and Joel Latham to
lift their teammates after strong
veins of form.
Lachie Weller and Tendai
Mzungu were impressive for
Peel when the teams met on
May 9. Fremantle selection will
determine their WAFL fates
during the week.
The Lions will have to be wary
of Jacob Ballard, who was also a
headache for Schofield’s off-field
» Joel
team in Round 8.

Hendrie inducted into WANFLUA
Hall of Fame
It’s not every day that a star of the
game agrees to joke about one of the
most controversial moments of his AFL
career.
But when Sydney’s 2005 premiership
captain Barry Hall learned that Craig Hendrie
was being inducted into the WANFLUA Hall of
Fame, he was happy to create some laughs.
Hall and Hendrie were famously linked
after the Swans forward gave away a 150m
penalty against Hawthorn in 2007. Hendrie
only paid the last of those 50m penalties,
but the photos show he and Hall in heated
discussions that lead most people to think
Hendrie was responsible for the lot.
Hall was in Perth in May working for
Fox Footy when Fremantle played North
Melbourne. He used the opportunity to
joke about Hendrie on camera, while also
congratulating him on his illustrious career.
“It was such a laugh,” Hendrie said.
“On field, Barry was one of the scariest
guys to be near even as an umpire. When you
meet him off the field I found him to be a very
engaging character.
“He always liked a chat before a game
and was quite funny. For him to make himself
available to be a part of the video tribute was
awesome and it really made my night.”
Hendrie has always been a popular
character.
His 69 AFL games, 256 WAFL matches,
games, six WAFL grand finals, three State
games and four Montgomery Medals made
him an obvious choice for Hall of Fame
induction.
His rise also created history because he
joined his father Rob in the elite club, making
them the first father-son inductees.
“Umpiring has been something that the
whole family has been involved in for most of
my life,” Hendrie said.
“It’s provided us not only with some great
on field moments and successes but we’ve
made lifelong family friendships through
umpiring. We’ve been able to travel to some
great cities whilst umpiring and Dad has even
umpired a game in London so it’s provided us
with an enormous amount of opportunities.”
Fourteen Hall of Famers, and more than
150 umpires, partners, coaches and Life
Members attended the induction ceremony
at Bells Function Centre.
Inaugural Hall of Famer Trevor Cant was
honoured on the night by being named Ball
Legend for 2015.
“It’s a very humbling experience if you
consider some of the great umpires that are
already part of that group,” Hendrie said.
“I’m exceptionally honoured to have been
acknowledged in such a way and I was pretty
excited to become a part of it. It really does
put an exclamation mark on my entire career
and I’ll have some fond memories to look back
upon.”

Hinchliffe had another solid game with 18
disposals and six clearances.
Sam Petrevski-Seton and Sam PowellPepper showed glimpses of why they are
rated highly for next year’s draft with 14
disposals each, while Kade Stewart collected
13 disposals and kicked a goal after the siren
to cap off the win.
Vic Metro’s best player was Jade Gresham,
who worked tirelessly to collect 20 disposals.
The win was WA’s first since a one-point
victory in Round 1, while the Vic Metro loss
leaves them at the bottom of the division one
table, having only recorded one win.

WAFC supports grassroots facilities
The
West
Australian
Football
Commission continues to support the
provision of facilities for grassroots
football clubs.
Recent funding announcements have
included a clubroom redevelopment for
Collegians Amateur Football Club and
lighting project for City Beach Oval.
The Collegians project is a long overdue
$2.7m project and with the support of the
WAFC the club was successful in gaining AFL
funding of $50,000 from the national Facility
Development Reserve.
The majority of the funding is from the City
of Nedlands ($2.1m), with the Department of
Sport and Recreation contributing $500,000
and the Collegians Amateur Football Club
adding a further $125,000.
The redevelopment will include a brand
new main club room, bar and function
area, three new changerooms, facilities for
coaches, a medical room, storage and player
areas.
The football club will be the main users
however the new building will be a multifunctional facility that will be available for
lease by community groups and for private
events, parties and functions. The project is
scheduled for completion in October 2015.
The City Beach Oval lighting project,
pictured, was a Town of Cambridge project with
the WAFC contributing $10,000 from its Facility
Fund. The project was recently completed and
officially opened on Friday, June 19.
WAFC General Manager Strategic Facilities
Geoff Glass said the official unveiling of the
new lights was a credit to all involved.
“A number of volunteers have played a
significant role and the financial commitment
and support of the elected members at the
Town of Cambridge has been tremendous,” he
said.
“The WA Football Commission was able to
offer a modest contribution and we are proud
to have been associated with the project.
“Given football is a winter sport the need
for lights to take full advantage of the existing
facilities is increasingly important. Overall, with
the refurbished and extended changeroom
and function space and now the ability to meet
night game standards, City Beach Oval is a first
class community facility.”

Race for finals tight in C1
Round 12 of the WAAFL C1 competition
looks to be crucial with the fight to stay
in the finals race reaching do-or-die
stages for a number of teams.
In what could be match of the round,
Bassendean host Lynwood Ferndale in a battle
to secure the four points in a must-win game
for both teams.
Currently sitting in eighth position,
Bassendean have had a less than successful
season, but will be looking to move another
win away from ninth-placed Lynwood
Ferndale who are currently one of two teams
guaranteed a place in the C2 competition next
season.
Bassendean will be looking for retribution
this Saturday having been beaten by 12 points
during their Round 3 encounter against the
Panthers at Ferndale Park.
For Lynwood Ferndale, a win would
move them into shared eighth spot with
Bassendean.
At the top end of the table, Quinns Districts
have only lost one game for the season and sit
two wins clear of the chasing pack.
With their only loss coming last weekend
against third-placed Carlisle, Quinns Districts
will come out firing this Saturday against
sixth-placed Kingsley at Kingsley Park.
If Kingsley win their game they will move
up the ladder, with the outcome of the
Bullcreek Leeming and Ocean Ridge game
deciding whether Kingsley move into fourth
or fifth position.
Round 13 A Grade Results
Kalamunda 5.20 (50) defeated West Coast 5.7 (37)
Fremantle CBC 8.7 (55) defeated by University 12.8 (80)
North Beach 17.11 (113) defeated Kelmscott 11.13 (79)
North Fremantle 15.10 (100) defeated Mt Lawley 10.6 (66)
Trinity Aquinas 5.3 (33) defeated by Wesley Curtin 12.12 (84)
In what is sure to be a tight game, the
Bullcreek Leeming versus Ocean Ridge fixture
will exhibit strong football with both teams
chasing finals and Ocean Ridge just two points
below Bullcreek Leeming on the ladder.
In thei Round 3 match the Bombers stole
a win from the Ocean Ridge home game,
meaning the Ocean Ridge Eagles will be
looking to do the same this Saturday.
With second to sixth position separated
by just two wins, the race for finals is well
and truly on, with all clubs determined not
to let any points slip in what could be danger
matches.
Carlisle will host seventh-placed Willetton,
while cellar dwellers Gosnells host secondplaced Melville who have proved to be tough
competition this season with eight wins and
just three losses.
Bouncedown for all matches is 2.30pm,

Claremont
• Claremont Football Club Banquet Auction – Saturday, 25th
July, 2015 @ 6.30pm.
• Round 16 will mark the annual NAIDOC round as the
tigers take on the Bulldogs at home. Claremont and South
Fremantle initiated the WAFL’s NAIDOC Round celebration
beginning with their annual match dating back to 2007,
and now the clubs with perhaps the strongest Indigenous
heritage in Australia do battle again at the Claremont
Showgrounds on Saturday 11th July.
With such a strong tradition of Aboriginal players
representing Claremont including Jim and Phil Krakouer,
Richmond flyer Michael Mitchell, WCE champion Chris
Lewis, and recent WAFL premiership players Gerrick
Weedon and Alroy Gilligan; Current indigenous league
regulars Keifer Yu, Shane McAdam and Francis Watson
will look to help the tigers avenge their round 3 loss from
earlier this year.
Once again, both sides will be wearing special jumpers
designed by respected indigenous artist Richard Walley to
recognise the NAIDOC tradition. Be sure to get down to the
showgrounds and cheer the boys on as they look to kick
start a run home to the finals in 2015.

West Perth
• A big thank you to all 7789 who attended our game last
Saturday against Subiaco as we celebrated our annual
International Football Festival. It took a lot of hard work
by a lot of people to make the day the success that it was.
The day included a citizenship ceremony with more than
70 people becoming Australian citizens and it was topped
off with a Gaelic Football match. We look forward to seeing
as many of those 7789 people back at a West Perth game as
soon as possible.

Can You Help?
Since the beginning of the 1970 WAFL season there have
been 4162 league debutants at an average of 93 new
players per season.
The WAFL player database
is missing a date of birth for only 23
YouScan.me
of these players but the birth place and junior/previous club is not
recorded for a further 240 players.
Each week the Budget will list the playing records of eight
players for whom information is sought. These include:
Gary James BATT (East Perth 1987-88, 7 games)
Mark BROWN (Subiaco 1987, 1 game)
Steven Morris DAVIS (Swan Districts 1982, 1 game)
Michael John DE VATTIMO (East Perth 1974, 6 games)
Brian John HEMMING (Swan Districts 1977-80, 29 games)
Robert Alex MARONI (East Perth 1982, 2 games)
John Michael O’CONNELL (Subiaco 1977, 5 games)
Michael WILLIAMS (Subiaco 1991, 1 game)
Any information that could help establish contact with, or lead to full
particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by
WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected].
