BHF Newsletter 6-14.indd - Brazosport Health Foundation
Brazosport Health Foundation, building philanthropic support
for Brazosport Regional Health System.
Spring / Summer 2014
The Cornerstone of Caring Capital Campaign continues to be the beneficiary of strong support
from all segments of our community. We are especially thankful for the recent gift from BASF
and we will recognize their significant contribution in the naming of the recently renovated 2nd
floor—The BASF Medical Surgical Unit. A special thanks goes to Chris Witte and Cindy Suggs for
their work that made this gift possible!
The outpouring of support has been nothing short of extraordinary. We have received corporate,
private foundation, and individual contributions for this major campaign. All of this support will
enable us to continue to live out our mission, to be able to provide our entire community with
the healthcare services you deserve…quality services that meet state and national benchmarks,
delivered with excellent customer service by our team of caregivers, and delivered in facilities that
are on par with the big city.
We believe we owe it to the community we serve to be the best, and I want our community to know
that is what drives and motivates us. So again, thank you for your support and for your trust in BRHS.

BASF Donates $500,000
Brazosport Regional recently hosted a reception
announcing the BASF $500,000 donation to the Health
Foundation’s Cornerstone of Caring Capital Campaign.
The generous gift is earmarked for the hospital’s patient
tower renovation of the 2nd floor, establishing The BASF
Medical Surgical Unit. BASF is the lead gift corporate
donor. “The donation underscores BASF’s commitment to
our hospital and to our community and this gift continues
their legacy of support,” said Al Guevara, President and
CEO of Brazosport Regional Health System.
“Our gift to the Health Foundation ensures that our
community, our employees and their families will
continue to have access to quality healthcare locally. We believe this gift will go a
long way to help ensure that our community will have the healthcare it needs not
only now, but in the future,” said Chris Witte, Senior Vice President and General
Manager of the BASF site in Freeport, Texas.

At Brazosport Health Foundation, we love to highlight our volunteers and donors who give

Caring Capital Campaign to help with the construction costs of the hospital transformation.

Brazosport Health Foundation
As Board President of the Foundation and a member of the Cornerstone of Caring Capital
Campaign Committee, I want to extend my gratitude to the many donors who have made
a difference through their support and donations to the Cornerstone of Caring Capital
Campaign. To you all – our generous donors, friends and supporters – thank you for your
belief in our hospital. Having received the Mabee Challenge grant of $500,000, we are at
$3,000,000 and hope to meet the challenge and raise the other $2,000,000 by May 2015. Your gift is one for the future
and one that will endure. If you haven’t submitted your pledge or donation, please call the Foundation and do so. Our
hospital needs your support.
Making A Difference - 2
For the past several years, TDECU volunteers have assisted with registration,
silent auction and raffle sales to Power of the Pur$e and Bluebonnet Social Club.
Their financial and customer service training are a winning combination as they
step easily into the role of representing both TDECU and Brazosport Health
Foundation. Linda Thomerson, Health Foundation Database Manager, has relied
on these volunteers and views them as part of the Team rather than volunteers.
Thank you TDECU Volunteers for sharing your expertise, time and talent.
Bruce and Mary Meyers
Dr. Bruce and Mary Meyers’ hard
work on behalf of Brazosport Regional
Health System reflects a deep personal
commitment to healthcare in our
community. Their shared dedication
to service was inherited from their
parents, who taught them the value
of giving back to their community.
Bruce and Mary not only give their
financial resources, but also give
their time and talents to Brazosport
Health Foundation and many
other community organizations. To
acknowledge their three decades of
volunteer commitment to healthcare
and Brazosport Regional, Bruce and
Mary were honored at the Bluebonnet
Social Club.
George Franklin
At the heart of every organization, there is a volunteer who gives incredible
amounts of time and energy to advance its mission. George Franklin is an
incredible volunteer. George is currently serving his fifth year on the Health
Foundation Board, and now serves as President. He is also serving on the
Cornerstone of Caring Capital Campaign Committee. He was Committee Chair
of the first Bluebonnet Social Club in 2008. In 2012, his band, Austin Colony was
the opening act for Clay Walker, Bluebonnet Social Club Headline Entertainer.
As a lifelong community member, who was born in the Dow Hospital, George is
committed to Brazosport Regional and volunteers his time, talent and financial
resources to ensure quality medical care is available to all.

“I routinely participated in “employee giving” when I worked at a well-known hospital in the Texas
Medical Center. I was proud to work there and contributing financially was one way I showed my
appreciation and support for what the hospital stood for. Unfortunately, I felt disconnected from it
all since I didn’t live in that same community where I worked. Living in the Lake Jackson area, I’m
proud to work at BRHS and want to see my hospital thrive in the community I live in. I appreciate
what BRHS stands for and being an active part of giving gives me a way to voice my support for the
work of our hospital.”
- Lisa Baker, Team Member at Brazosport Regional Health System
I contribute to BRHS because of its impact
oon our patients and the community.
I recognize as Sam Levenson did in one of
his poems that, “People, more than things,
h
need to be restored, renewed, revived,
n
rreclaimed and redeemed.”
I envision that the renovations of the
hospital will impact the quality of care
h
and restoration of health to our patients.
a
Why we give to financial
support to the hospital
emergency room is quite
simple….our emergency
room and our hospital are
literally our life’s blood.
- Corky and Vicki Melass,
Community Members
“I contribute for the staffing and technical
growth of the hospital so we can be just
as good, if not better, than the hospitals,
clinics, and other medical entities up the
road. We need to support not only our
workplace but our health place and this
is my way of supporting what I believe is
important to me and our community.”
- Silvia Chavira, Team Member at
Brazosport Regional Health System
- Dr. Roland Prezas, Brazosport Regional
Health System

“The reason I give to the Foundation is
because I believe it’s important to give
back to an organization that supports
their community, and the hospital has
continually “given” to the Brazosport
community for over 70 years.”
"I have been blessed in many ways
during my life and working here at
BRHS has been one of them. I saw
from the first day I started working
here how BRHS blesses and helps
people and I wanted to support those
efforts.”
- Krista Alexander, Team Member at
Brazosport Regional Health System
- Dora Mae Stephens, Team Member
at Brazosport Regional Health System
Making A Difference - 4
As our community continues to grow
and change, BRHS is expanding and
improving to meet the needs, providing
health care to all, regardless of an ability
to pay. BRHS is a valued resource in the
community, and we feel our giving helps
make an important difference for us all.
We give because we can; therefore, we
feel we must.
- Sharon Rogers, Community Member
“We are pleased to
support BRHS with this
gift and to assist with the
total campus upgrade that
ensures our community
has local quality medical
services.”

“The Brazosport Rotary Club, celebrating its
60th anniversary, has long been a supporter of
Brazosport Regional Health System. Over the
years, the club has contributed to many projects
and campaigns conducted by the hospital
and the Brazosport Health Foundation. Club
members believe in the importance of having a
top-notch community hospital, and are proud
to support the current capital campaign. When
any of us need immediate medical attention, it
is so comforting to know that BRHS is right here
just a few minutes away and ready to provide
the quality care we need.”

“The Muchowich family has been in business in the Brazosport
area for over eighty years. Our family has utilized the services
offered by our local hospital from the beginning of life to the end
of life and everything in between. When I was approached earlier
this year about contributing to the capital campaign for the
construction of the new Emergency Services Pavilion it was a very
easy decision. You can't put a price on the availability of state of
the art emergency room care.”
“First State Bank in Clute, Texas is proud to help fund the
improvements of Brazosport Regional Health System. First
State Bank has been a long time supporter of the hospital.
Brazosport Regional is the hospital in Brazosport that
serves our community’s health needs. It is important that
we show our support to our local hospital for the important
service it provides the residents of our area.”

“BASF is honored to be the signature sponsor of the 2014 Bluebonnet Social
Club. The event is truly special, and it brings our community together to
support Brazosport Regional, which has been providing local, quality health
care to our community for more than 70 years. With that said, we are
especially proud to be the 2014 Signature Sponsor for the Black Tie & Boots Affair.”
- Chris Witte, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the BASF site in Freeport, Texas
We could not be any happier with the success of the Bluebonnet Social
Club! The support from our community and the generosity of both
corporate and individual donors toward the refurbishing of our Emergency
Department is truly astonishing. We feel honored to be members of a
community that rallies together to support this vital part of our excellent,
not-for profit, health care system.
- Mark and Jennifer Monical, Co-Chairs of the 2014
Bluebonnet Social Club
“I having been saving for a long time for something special and this guitar was it. Knowing
that the money went to the Foundation made it that much more special. I have been going
to Clay Walker’s concerts for 17 years and I truly live by his song, Live, Laugh, Love.”

The Power of the Pur$e April 2015 luncheon (POP) is in development phase and the date and keynote speaker will be announced
soon. The POP luncheon spotlights women’s health needs in our community and celebrates women’s purchasing power and
economic influence in helping meet those needs.
In 2012, the luncheon raised $125,000 to purchase 3D Imaging Software for the Brazosport Regional Imaging Services digital
mammography machine and in 2014 it raised $145,000 for the construction costs of one of the three exam rooms in the new
Lowrey Emergency Services Pavilion.
Brazosport Christian School donates over $500 to The Mermaid Project.
Funded by donations to the Brazosport Health Foundation, The
Mermaid Project is a local initiative providing free mammograms
to qualifying low-income, uninsured women and men in Southern
Brazoria County. The patient is approved for financial assistance by
the Brazosport Regional Business Office before the mammogram is
scheduled. To learn more visit, www.Brazosport-Health-Foundation.org
