Advent also signals the beginning of the new church year – a time of new beginnings. This is also an excellent time to reset our priorities and begin some new disciplines to grow in faith, grow in hope and grow in love. Why not invite a family member, co-worker, neighbor, or friend to join you in worship during the month of December. May your Advent and Christmas be filled with new blessings, phenomenal opportunities, and God’s Shalom (peace) that surpasses all understanding. Have a Blessed Advent and a Joyous Christmas, Pastor Smothers PAGE 2 Hold up! Wait a minute! Could it be that God’s world is not revolving around me? Oh, my! Could it be that I am not the center of the universe? Heavens forbid! Could it be that some of these other folks waiting in line right along with me are also frustrated, aggravated, and annoyed? Oh, yes—most definitely! Waiting in long lines is common in today’s busy world. It seems that the faster we move, the quicker we get to the place where we just have to wait even longer! We seem to be a world going nowhere faster and faster. Rev. Dr. Priscilla I. Boswell Waiting An Advent Reflection Have you ever been to the bank or to the grocery store when it was busy and had to get in the back of a long line? Then, after a short while, decided that the line you’re in is moving too slowly, so you get into another line that seemed to be moving faster? The problem is that as soon as you get into that line, it’s now moving slower than the line you just got out of! Well, I’ve been there, done that, and have a tee shirt to prove it. Often when this happens, I’ve been frustrated, aggravated, and annoyed. I’ve thought, ―Why is the world not moving at the pace I want it to?!‖ Despite my dislike of waiting in long lines, I’m glad that Advent is a time of waiting. It reminds me that while I am waiting to do one task so that I can rush off to do another, God has provided me with a moment of rest and reflection. And, in that moment, I can utter a word of thanks, and pray for all the others who share my common predicament. The Bible says “Every test that you have experienced is the kind that normally comes to people. But God keeps his promise, and he will not allow you to be tested beyond your power to remain firm; at the time you are put to the test, he will give you the strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out.” (1 Corinthians 10:13). Could it be that the way out of the frustration, aggravation, and annoyance of waiting in long lines is to utter a prayer of thanksgiving for all that God has done, is doing, and will do for me and others? Yes, it could. Could it be that once again, God has changed what I took to be a bother into a blessing that I will gladly bear? Yes, most definitely. Could it be that I am grateful for the reminder? Humbly, I whisper, Yes. I have decided that throughout this Advent Season whenever I am waiting in a long line and God is turning my bother into a blessing, I will pray for all those in line with me. Why are they there? What do they need? What are their concerns, worries, frustrations, aggravations, and annoyances? No matter. I’ll pray that God will bless them in their waiting so that they will sense His presence and love as He helps them to bear all their trials and temptations. Maybe I’ll pray something like: Father God, as you bring us times of waiting during this Advent season, let your light of peace, love, patience, and joy shine throughout our world. Give us eyes to wait upon You as You change our bothers into blessings, so that we may prepare our lives and our homes to receive the One who said, ―I am the light of the world.‖ In Jesus’ precious name. Amen. Enjoy your waiting this Advent! Love, Pastor Boswell ADVENT SEASON WORSHIP SCHEDULE St. Paul-Corkran Memorial Cooperative Parish Christmas Eve Worship Service Friday, December 24, 2010 7 pm Corkran Campus Combined Christmas Worship Service Sunday, December 26, 2010 10 am St. Paul Campus New Year’s Eve Watch Night Service Friday, December 31, 2010 10 pm St. Paul Campus THE BEACON AND CONNE XION ISSUE 11 PAGE THE LAY LEADER’S CORNER 3 Gwendolyn Terrell Real Life Discipleship – Get in the Game I love watching baseball games. My grandfather introduced me to the game – listening to the Washington Senatorsway back in the day. I‘ve been a fan and sometimes fanatic since then. It‘s the ultimate spectator sport. You show up, get your snacks of choice, cheer or boo based on how the game is going, get more snacks, and when the game is over you leave. Even if the entire team is having a bad day, the coach is never coming into the stands asking me to get in the game. Even when the umpire clearly needs glasses to call the balls and strikes, he is not going to ask me to lend him a pair. And finally, when my favorite player is not delivering – no runs, no hits, and no base on balls – and I am screaming with 40,000 other fans – GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME- I am still just a spectator. Being a disciple of Jesus is not a spectator sport. Right from the start He tells us in Matthew 28: 18 – 20: Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (NIV) Go, make disciples of everyone, teaching them everything I taught you – No one is excluded. No one is not on the team. NO ONE IS A SPECTATOR. Everyone has an opportunity to get in the Game. Jesus is not only telling us to get in the game, He is telling us that He will coach us through every play of the game. Starting in January, the Christian Formation Ministry will offer several small group opportunities to participate in the Real Life Discipleship Training Course. (See the full CFM January – March schedule including dates, times and locations on the St Paul web-site www.stpumcmd.org CFM small group classes) Some of the subjects for discussion are ‗The Church is God‘s Team‘; ‗Make Disciples as You Go‘; and ‗How Do We Obey Jesus‘ Command?‘ The small groups are open to everyone, so invite family, friends, co-workers, first timers, — just everyone. You will be able to register on the St Paul website and in person at each campus. One of my daily prayers is thanksgiving for the phenomenal cast of characters who serve in ministry at the St. Paul and Corkran Memorial Cooperative Parish. Congregational vitality would never get accomplished without a supporting cast of ministers, staff, volunteers, family and friends. Reflecting on the last few weeks of this year I am more grateful than ever for the support that has resulted in the St. Paul – Corkran Memorial Cooperative Parish finishing the year with many significant objectives accomplished. Six months ago we began this great experiment of shared ministry and at our recent Charge Conference we celebrated the many accomplishments of this journey thus far – thanks to everyone for stepping up and living into the vision of Cooperative Ministry in the Oxon Hill and Temple Hills communities. Another milestone to be acknowledged is the service of Ministry Chairpersons who planned and implemented strategic ministries this calendar year. Some of these people are rotating off the leadership team and some are moving to new places of service. To each and every one of you my heartfelt thanks for making these ministries work. In 2011 we will be strategically positioned to transfer our energies into growing in worship ministries, stewardship and evangelistic outreach. The New Year promises to stretch us even more as we tackle an ambitious challenge to INVITE, TRANSFORM AND SERVE OUR COMMUNITIES! In 2011 our objective in worship at the St. Paul Campus is 350 and 125 at the Corkran Campus. We will achieve these goals by improving our worship life at both campuses, increasing our outreach through person-to-person and social media invitations, and by continuing to add to our ministry offerings disciple-making opportunities that meet the needs of people in our communities. . Thanks to everyone for the contributions that you have made of time, talent, gifts, service and witness. God has honored us with many signs and wonders in 2010; may we continue to honor God with our very best in all that we say and do in 2011.
