Class A title for the 7th time in 8 years. The Panthers lost to
Irondequoit 24-21 in the Far West Regional.
This season, Sweet Home will be a very different team
than in past seasons. Panthers coach John Faller has just
4 starters returning on both offense and defense.
“Every year is different,” Sweet Home coach John Faller
said. “Last year's seniors will be tough to replace but that's

Armenia, won Sweet Home’s Iron Panther contest in the
off-season. Faller’s annual contest includes weight lifting,
40-yard dash, vertical jumps and other combine-like tests.
“We’ve been running it since 1986,” Faller said. “Just to
keep the kids active and competitive.”
Armenia (6-0, 215) was timed at 4.8 in the 40-yard dash.
“He’s got good speed,” Faller said. “He’s not huge but
he’s strong.”
Armenia also kicks PATs and field goals for Sweet Home.
“He’s one of the better kickers in the area,” Faller said.
“He’s also our back-up punter. He’s a lineman but he’s a
good athlete too.”
Armenia also maintains a 98-academic average while
taking a full course of Advanced Placement classes,
“Kids that are top students like that are disciplined and
come in with a good attitude,” Faller said. “They know that
hard work and preparation pays off in the class room. It
does in football, too. We have an Advanced Placement

The school’s size is determined by the average daily
attendance and, with no 9th or 10th grades, Bennett barely
fell into for Class C - just one student away from playing in
the larger Class B.
“We had already submitted our numbers to the state,”
McDuffie said. “That was done before the Board decided
anything. A few weeks later, they started to move Middle
College into the building.”
So, the Bennett kids are now sharing their building with
kids who are attending Middle College - whose kids have
to play at South Park.
“It’s a very odd situation,” McDuffie said. “I wish we had
been able to do this a little differently, but our players and
coaches really have no say in the matter.”
Bennett has already been proclaimed as the Class C
champion. With 5 offensive lineman who weigh at least
280 pounds, the Tigers will have a ridiculous size advantage over the other small-school teams in Class C.
“There’s nothing I could do about it,” McDuffie said.
“The kids goal was to be able to play Maine-Endwell and
try to dethrone them. They were disappointed because
they wanted to be the best at a higher level.”
McDuffie tried to compensate by scheduling a game
against Orchard Park, a traditional Class AA power.
“We want to play one of the best teams in WNY,”
McDuffie said. “We have to play who they tell us but for
our non-league game, we wanted to try and find the best
competition that we can.”
Oh, by the way, in addition having a huge size advantage over every other Class C team, the Tigers starting RB
from 2014, has already committed to play at Syracuse
after graduation.
Isaiah McDuffie, Steve’s son, was offered a scholarship
to Syracuse to play football before he started his junior
season. Isaiah has verbally committed to the Orange.
“Syracuse offered Isaiah last summer when we came
back from their camp,” Steve McDuffie said. “UB and Penn
State had also offered him. We had a coach come in from
UConn to offer him and Washington State also offered.”
Isaiah McDuffie says he chose Syracuse because it
was close to home.
“It’s always been my dream to play college football in a
Power Conference,” Isaiah said. “It’s been my dream since
I was a little kid.”
McDuffie says that, while he has verbally committed, he
is more focused on winning at Bennett right now.
“We plan on having a big year,” Isaiah said. “We have
great teammates and we are just a big family. We want to
win this thing together.”
Steve McDuffie says that the Tigers are playing for
more than a Section 6 title at The Ralph - or even a NYS
title.
“These kids are playing for their school,” he said.
“Bennett has a long tradition in football and these kids are
trying to save their school. They don’t want Bennett to
close. We get no say in that. The only say we have is on
the field this year.”

It’s not the critic who counts.
Not the man who points out where
the strong man stumbled or where
the doer of deeds could have done
them better.
The credit belongs
to the man
marred by the
dust and the sweat
and the blood;
who strives valiantly;
who errs and comes
short again and
again and again...
...who at best knows,
in the end, the triumph
of high achievements
and who, at the worst,
if he fails at least fails
while daring greatly,
so that his place will
never be with those
cold timid souls
who know neither
victory or defeat.

Are You Game?
The ONLY Sport
“Hockey is pretty cool,” Otto said grudgingly, “but it
ain’t really a sport because they allow fighting. If they got
rid of the fighting I might reconsider. Real men don’t handle their frustrations on the playing field by throwing fists.
They simply flatten their opponent with a good, clean
shoulder-to-the-mouth on the next play.”
“I see. So what about women’s sports?”
“The only girls that play sports are those girls in that
semi-pro football league,” Otto said.
“I bet some Olympic ice skaters would disagree with
you,” I said.
“Ice skating is stupid,” Otto said. “The only thing that
would make ice skating a sport is if they sent all those
girls out onto the ice to do their Triple Toe-Loops at the
same time. The way you would win is to knock the other
girls off their skates and onto their butts. If a girl got
knocked down she would be eliminated. Last girl standing
wins the Gold.”
“Then you must think that
Roller Derby is a sport.”
“Don’t be a jerk,” Otto
sneered. “Roller Derby and
Professional Wrestling are
scripted shows. They may as
well be boxing.”
“But there are lots of people that don’t like football that
are into sports,” I said. “Just
look at the sports pages.
There is wrestling -”
Otto interrupted.
“Two guys rolling around on
a mat in their underwear. Lovely.”
I continued. “There is cross country -”
“Cross Country isn’t a sport,” Otto said. “Running four
miles over hills and through mud is exercise for do-gooders that eat tofu and bean sprouts for lunch every day.”
“Well, what about Golf?” I asked.
“Anything that requires you to get out of the way and
let somebody else play through isn’t a sport.”
“Tennis?”
“Ping Pong on grass.”
“I guess that leaves Bowling,” I said.
Otto started laughing.
“What’s so funny?” I asked.
“I’m in a bowling league,” Otto said.
“And you don’t consider it a sport?”
“Heck, no!” Otto roared. “Look at me! I’m sixty-three
years old. I smoked cigars since I was 12 and the only
exercise I get is when I go out and sit on my riding lawn
mower and cut the grass. If I can bowl, it ain’t a sport.”
“Well, look,” I said, “I do agree that football is the best
sport but -”
“Wrong,” Otto said. “Football in the ONLY sport.
Everything else is a game.”

I went to lunch at Papa Grande’s the other day and I
saw my friend Otto Slamkowski sitting on a stool. He had
a crumpled copy of the Football Weekly in his back pocket and he was chomping on his ever-present cigar.
Otto had the Buffalo News open and was reading Mike
Harrington’s column.
“Hey, Otto,” I greeted him. “What’s Mike got to say
about the sports world today?”
“Nothin’,” Otto said. “He didn’t write about sports at all.
Just a bunch of crap about the
Red Sox and the Yankees and
a bunch of other stuff nobody
cares about.”
“What the heck are you
talking about?” I asked,
incredulous. “A lot of people
care about the Yankees. The
Yankees have more fans than
any sports team in the world.”
“The Yankees are not a
sports team,” Otto growled.
“They are a baseball team.”
“Baseball isn’t a sport?
How can baseball not be a sport,” I asked, growing a bit
uneasy. I had a feeling that I should have left this subject
untouched.
“Did you ever try to actually watch a baseball game?”
Otto asked sarcastically. “I’m usually asleep by the second inning. Heck, a perfect game in baseball is when
nothing happens! It may as well be soccer.”
“Okay,” I said. “I understand that some people like
more action. But what about basketball? There is almost
continual action in basketball.”
“Yeah, until you get to the last three minutes of the
game,” Otto said. “Then there is an unending parade to
the foul line interrupted only by each coach taking all 15
of their allotted timeouts. I once turned on a basketball
game and there were 6.7 seconds left. I went out and
mowed the lawn and when I came back there were still
3.4 seconds left. So I went back out and changed the oil
in my truck. When I came back in some guy hit a buzzerbeater to win the game. Besides, a real sport requires
contact. When contact occurs in basketball, they call a
foul.”
“Well,” I said, “there’s lots of action in hockey and
there’s a lot of contact, too.”
Football is the
ONLY sport...
everything else
is a game.
