Blues Update Vol 9 2009 08.31.09
Expect a whole mess of Mississippi Hill Country Blues & Southern Rock on Mon Sept 21st at the Tractor Tavern in the North Seattle neighborhood of Ballard. The Hill Country Revue is considered to be a modern Blues Band for the new generation and features Cody Dickinson & Chris Chew of The North Mississippi Allstars along with Kirk Smithhart, Ed “Hot” Cleveland & Daniel Robert. Their debut album “Make a Move” was released this past May featuring stripped down, one-chord North Mississippi, gritty, back to basics kind of Blues that’s funky & “nasty”. Sept’s looking HOT HOT HOT. Soul diva Bettye LaVette kicks off Sept at Jazz Alley in Seattle on Tues Sept 1st & Weds Sept 2nd. Also on Weds Sept 2nd, George Clinton & Parliament will be at the Showbox SoDo in Seattle. Labour Day weekend presents HOT Blues and R&B with the Red Hot Blues Sisters for 2 nights at The Yale, Fri Sept 4th & Sat Sept 5th. Also on Sat Sept 5th Slide Master Sonny Landreth & his band are booked into The Triple Door in Seattle. There’s an exciting double bill at the Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville on Sun Sept 6th with the BonTaj Roulet Tour with Bonnie Raitt & her band, plus Taj Mahal & the Phantom Blues Band. Mark Hummel & the Blues Survivors who just played here, play a couple of dates south of us, at The Triple Door in Seattle on Weds Sept 9th & at The Rock Fish Grill in Anacortes on Thurs Sept 10th. On Fri Sept 11th Jason Ricci & New Blood are at Highway 99 in Seattle. That same Fri Sept 11th & again Sat Sept 12th Studebaker John & The Hawks are at The Yale. The Neville Brothers & Dr. John host Mardi Gras Mambo at The River Rock in Richmond on Sat Sept 12th. Buckwheat Zydeco is at Ambrosia Centre in Victoria Sat Sept 19th, then The Yale on Weds Sept 23rd. On Mon Sept 21st The Hill Country Revue are at The Tractor Tavern in Seattle. Fri Sept 25th & Sat Sept 26th Chicago’s Eddie Shaw & the Wolf Gang are at The Yale. Too Slim & the Taildraggers play Jazzbones on Fri Sept 25th. Alice Stuart is at The Rock Fish on Sat Sept 26th. Make note, there’s been a change in the Vancouver date we originally quoted for Buckwheat Zydeco & the Ils Sont Partis Band. Not sure how that mix-up happened? They play The Yale on Weds Sept 23rd. Get tickets now, as this will surely sell out, despite all the talk of a recession. This is the 30th Anniversary Tour promoting their brand new Alligator Records release “Lay Your Burden Down” an album produced by Los Lobos producer Steve Berlin, featuring guests Sonny Landreth, Warren Haynes, JJ Grey, Trombone Shorty & Steve Berlin. If you’re going to be in the Tacoma area, Too Slim & the Taildraggers, who recently opened for Kenny Wayne Shepherd, will be cranking it up at Jazzbones on Fri Sept 25th. OR… you can wait ‘til Fri Nov 6th & Sat Nov 7th when Too Slim & the Taildraggers return to The Yale. October’s beginning to shape up. Johnny A has a couple of gigs lined up the other side of the border. On Fri Oct 2nd he’s at Jazzbones in th Tacoma, and on Sat Oct 4 he & his band are at The Triple Door in Seattle. He’s such a guitar sensation that famed guitar maker Gibson recognized him with the production of his own signature brand guitar. 1 Hard to believe it’s been three years since his lifesaving liver transplant surgery. Back then he was given only 8 months to live. With no health insurance & few funds, his musical friends rallied to raise half a million dollars for the necessary surgery. Friends like Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, Taj Mahal, Little Charlie & the Nightcats, Steve Miller & many others put on benefits to raise the funds. Since the surgery he’s grown stronger and is performing a lot. We’re, of course, referring to most everyone’s favorite “Original Blues Brother” Curtis Salgado who will be belting out a mix of Soul & Blues at Jazzbones in Tacoma on Sat Oct 3rd. Just announced!!! The Legendary Maria Muldaur brings “Her Garden of Joy Jug Band” to Highway 99 in Seattle on Sat Oct 3rd. Of course Maria Muldaur and “Her Garden of Joy Jug Band” are playing here in Vancouver too, at The Yale on Sun Oct 4th. Tickets are on sale now so make sure you get yours soon before The Yale show sells out. It has been said that if anybody ever went down to the Crossroads and let the Devil tune his guitar it was probably Eddie Turner. Apparently people get chills every time the guy strikes a chord! If that strikes a note with you, then look out, because on Fri Oct 9th Eddie “Devil Boy” Turner returns to Highway 99 Blues Club in Seattle. Arkansas based Bluesman & Blues road warrior & former member of the Legendary Nighthawks, a band he departed from in 1987, Jimmy Thackery is on the road doing what he loves to do best, playing the Blues in support of his most recent album “Inside Tracks”. His schedule has included a stop at Jazzbones in Tacoma. Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers will be there on Fri Oct 30th. Hard to believe it’s been over a decade since one of the founding fathers of British Blues played Vancouver. I was at that show & am now pleased to see that John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers will be back to play The Centre in Vancouver on Remembrance Day, Weds Nov 11th. The night before, Tues Nov 10th they’re at the McPherson Playhouse in Victoria. Looks like Louisiana’s sending a pre-Christmas present to the folks in Seattle and Tacoma. Houma Louisiana’s favorite son Tab Benoit will be parking his big black touring truck outside Highway 99 in Seattle on Thurs Dec 10th, then outside Jazzbones in Tacoma on Fri Dec 11th & Sat Dec 12th. If you’ve got a fever for the Bayou sounds of some Swamp Blues then circle those dates on your calendar. Just got word that harmonica ace & Blues Legend James Harman will join Steve Kozak’s West Get ready to “Flip, Flop, & Fly” Coast Blues Revue for two because Canada’s Downchild evenings at The Yale on Fri Blues Band will be on a Western swing in Oct Oct 23rd & Sat Oct 24th. together with Colin Linden. This double bill is booked into The Act in Maple Ridge on Weds ***Hey, hey, the Blues is alright!*** Oct 14th, then into the McPherson Playhouse in Your next Blues Horizons update soon. Victoria on Thurs Oct 15th, and finally, The Vogue Theatre in Vancouver on Fri Oct 16th. 2
