2016 Potomac School Scholarship Auction Lights. Camera. Auction! helping our stars shine brightly Character Counts. TTR Sotheby’s International Realty is proud to support The Potomac School in its mission to foster students’ intellectual development, love of learning, and strength of character. McLEAN, VA | GEORGETOWN, DC | DOWNTOWN, DC | ALEXANDRIA, VA | CHEVY CHASE, MD Dear Friends, It’s time for The Potomac School’s 2016 Scholarship Auction! As you leaf through the pages of this catalog, you will see that it is more than just a book: It is a reflection of the tremendous commitment of Potomac’s parents, alumni, and friends. So many generous individuals and businesses have donated fantastic auction items, ensuring an exciting and fun-filled event that will make a lasting difference for our school. The Scholarship Auction has become a much-anticipated Potomac tradition because it offers our community a chance to celebrate and support an educational mission that we hold dear. If you attended last year’s auction, you know what a remarkable event it was. There was a great feeling of camaraderie in the room, as well as a few moments of playful competition as friends and classmates jockeyed to place a winning bid. But above all, there was a deep sense of affection for our school, our students, and our teachers. I believe that the outpouring of generosity that made last year’s auction an unprecedented success sprang from these positive feelings that we all share, and I am confident that this year’s event will be just as successful. When you support this auction, you are ensuring that Potomac can continue to provide education that combines intellectual growth with character development. Since its founding in 1904, our school has prepared thousands of young people to live healthy, principled, and successful lives. This was made possible by generations of committed educators and volunteer leaders who steadily guided our students, and our school, toward excellence. Equally critical were the many generous supporters who provided the means to expand our work and strengthen our mission, year after year. Today, Potomac continues to benefit from the generosity of its extended community, and for this we are truly grateful. I would like to mention a special focus of this year’s auction: RAISING THE PADDLE TO FUND POTOMAC SCHOLARS. During the auction, we will be asked to raise our paddles to signify our support for those students who require scholarships to attend Potomac, and for our vital faculty professional development program. We hope to have 100% participation; please raise your paddle for whatever level you can give. Finally, I extend sincere thanks to our auction co-chairs, Annie Pacious and Ellie Judd, and their cadre of dedicated volunteers, for the incredible energy, enthusiasm, and effort they have devoted to this event. They have put together what promises to be a terrifically exciting and memorable evening. Carolyn and I look forward to seeing you at the auction. With sincere appreciation for your support, John Kowalik Head of School The 2016 Potomac School Scholarship Auction 1 W E ’ L L T R E AT YOU LIKE F A M I LY. . . Auction! ★ Helping our stars shine brightly Dear Friends, Hooray for Hollywood, and hooray for Potomac! What could be more fun than an evening of glitz and glamour that benefits the school we all love? While I like this year’s tagline of “Lights. Camera. Auction!” what really strikes me as significant are the words that follow it: “helping our stars shine brightly.” That’s what it’s all about. Everyone who contributes to this event’s success does it for just one reason: so that our wonderful students and faculty will have even more opportunities to shine. As you know, our annual auction provides critically needed funds for student scholarships and faculty professional development. Currently, 18% of Potomac’s students receive financial aid. The scholarship dollars generated by this event enable these qualified and deserving young people to benefit from all that Potomac offers. What a gift that is – and what an investment in the future! This event also supports our school’s commitment to excellent teaching. Funds raised through the auction help ensure that all Potomac faculty have opportunities for continued learning and enrichment. A strong professional development program is key to recruiting and retaining the best faculty and helps our teachers stay attuned to the latest developments in their disciplines and in classroom theory and practice. So, what makes an event like this successful? I believe it is the same thing that makes our school, or any worthwhile enterprise, successful. The key is generosity – not just financial generosity, but generosity that is expressed by the sharing of time, talent, ideas, and effort. At Potomac, we are blessed with a community that truly exemplifies the phrase “generosity of spirit.” The members of this community teach and model kindness, integrity, respect, and service to others. They are committed to making a difference – for our school, our students, and the world at large. When people like that come together, fantastic things happen! And one of those fantastic things is this Scholarship Auction. Last year’s event was absolutely electric; the excitement and commitment in the room were amazing. I invite you to join us in creating that same excitement, and demonstrating that same commitment, this year. Potomac needs and values your support. See you on the red carpet! All the best, Marjorie Brennan Chair, Board of Trustees The 2016 Potomac School Scholarship Auction 3 Dear Friends and Families, Welcome to Potomac’s 2016 Scholarship Auction. We are excited to have you join in this important effort to raise funds for student financial aid and faculty professional development. Whether you attend the event or participate from afar, your support will be deeply appreciated! This year’s auction celebrates the excitement of Hollywood, while raising funds to support the real stars of our show: Potomac’s amazing students and faculty. Did you know that one in six Potomac students is receiving scholarship assistance? Were you aware that almost every member of our school’s faculty is participating in professional development this year? The funds that we raise through this event help ensure that The Potomac School will continue to attract the outstanding students and teachers that make it a vibrant hub of challenging, joyful learning. We offer sincere appreciation to all of the generous individuals and businesses who have donated items for this year’s auction; a quick look through this catalog will show you the unbelievably amazing things we have up for bid! We also want to mention a special highlight of the auction: RAISING THE PADDLE TO FUND POTOMAC SCHOLARS – an opportunity for all of us to make a generous show of support for the students, faculty, and school that we love. This event would not be possible without the hard work of many volunteers and Potomac staff members; we thank them all for their dedication and effort. But above all, we thank you for your continued support of our school and this event. Your involvement and generosity make this auction a success, year after year. You truly do play a starring role.
