W
hat if you could roll
out of the garage
with a road-specific
sprocket setup and
then once at the stunt lot lower the
gear ratio for extreme low-speed
wheelie control in minutes without replacing the chain and rear
sprocket? It’s not often in today’s
sportbike industry that a completely
original hard part hits the market; a
performance product that takes a
tried and true idea and reinvents it
for the benefit of the aftermarket.
This is what Canada-based 12
O’Clock Performance Inc. has done
with the Dual Ratio Sprocket (D.R.S.)
system. Years of R&D, testing and
improvement turned out a package
that allows users to, in a claimed 2
minutes, switch between two predetermined gear ratios (chosen at
purchase) through a gear reduction
system. Only one supplied tool is
needed to switch between the two
gear ratios. There is no need to lift
the rear, remove the chain and swap
out for a new sprocket.
Stunters often run a very large
rear sprocket, which allows them
to wheelie more easily and have
more down-low throttle response
to perform slow, controlled stunts
without worrying about stalling the
engine. These huge sprockets limit
the top speed of the bike so much
that it becomes practically useless
for any other type of riding, forcing
riders to haul their bikes in a truck
or on a trailer. No one wants to ride
the street at 12,000 RPM because of
ultralow gearing. The D.R.S. system
overcomes that by offering two
riding modes.
Drag racers may also find this
system useful to get quicker 60ft
times and acceleration down the
track. And to be able to utilize more
gears of their bike before hitting the
eighth- or quarter-mile clocks. Then
riders can simply switch back to
Street mode for the ride home.
Now you can have one bike for dual
purposes.
How does it work? The D.R.S.
system replaces the factory “cush
26 / SSB
drive” located in the hub of the
rear wheel of your bike. Installation
does not require permanent
modifications to your bike,
including the wheel. It is a bolt-on
system, and it can be removed
easily and returned to stock if
needed. Each system comes with
two modes: a Street (S) mode and
a Reduction (R) mode. The D.R.S.
does not multiply the gearing in
S mode. Whatever size sprocket
you bolt to it is what you get in
that mode. The D.R.S. unit then
multiplies the gearing through its
internal gear system in R mode.
It is not a variable adjuster as it
uses solid gears; meaning the ratio
stays constant between S and R
mode. You can tune it to suit your
needs only by the sprocket size
you order with the kit. When it
is time to go from street gearing to the more aggressive gear
ratio, changing the position of
4 pins multiplies the first ratio
(ordered sprocket size) via the
internal D.R.S. gearing for the new
R mode gear ratio. For example,
D.R.S. ordered with a 46 tooth
sprocket would yield a 46T in
S mode and when the pins are
relocated, 67T in R mode. In the R
mode the magic happens inside
the D.R.S. gear reduction hub and
the countershaft-to-rear sprocket
ratio is multiplied to equal a
change to a 67T sprocket without
actually changing anything. Don’t
worry about the math, 12 O’Clock
Performance has that handled. All
you need to know is what two gear
ratios your riding style requires.
For those who want to be able to
ride comfortably on the street and
then rapidly switch to a stuntspecific or drag strip–ready lower
gear ratio, the D.R.S. system will
make life easier. At the end of the
day it allows the rider more time to
play with less time wrenching a bike
back and forth to streetable after a
day of hard riding.
Kits to fit more motorcycle models
to follow. Sprocket and all necessary
install hardware included.
THE DETAILS
Designed for stunt riders and drag-strip enthusiasts. The Dual Ratio
Sprocket system is like having two different sized sprockets with
you everywhere you ride. Choose your two favorite gear ratios
upon ordering.
In less than 5 minutes, switch between two user-determined gear
ratios (sprocket sizes) by moving the position of 4 pins using a
single supplied tool to significantly move power down low without
lifting the rear and removing the chain/sprocket.
Based on a gear reducer, it has solid gears inside. A pre-determined
ratio stays constant between Street (S) mode and Reduction (R)
mode. You can tune it to suit your needs only by the sprocket size
you bolt to it. In other words, the D.R.S. system gives you two finaldrive gear ratios to choose from.
The gear reduction system does not require permanent
modification to the bike during install. The bolt-on unit replaces the
sprocket side of the factory cush drive located in the rear wheel and
comes with all the necessary install hardware.
Provides the benefit of a larger rear sprocket without compromising
street riding through a two-mode final-drive ratio change option.
