Volunteer Mobilization
and Action Centers in 2006
48 events. 17 Action Centers. 500 volunteers.
Here’s a glimpse of the multiplying impact in 2006 towards spreading
awareness about underprivileged children.
CRY Walk 2006
CRY Walk 2006 for Child Relief was organized for the third consecutive year, with the
support and efforts of over 100 volunteers across 8 Action Centers (ACs). It was a
series of walkathon events, which started in Boston on August 26, 2006 and
continued across Portland, Pittsburgh, Chicago, San Francisco, Bay Area, RaleighDurham and Southern California. The event culminated in Lexington on October 28,
2006.
The event provided hundreds of walkers with an opportunity to support a cause they
believe in. In some cities, the event has come to symbolize not just a fundraising
activity but also entertainment for the whole family–games, food, magic show,
music–ensuring that all individuals can participate in this movement in some form or
the other.
a) Boston AC | 75 participants: The event was held at the Minuteman Park in
Alewife on August 23, 2006.
b) Raleigh–Durham AC: Families in groups, young adults, parents with strollers were
a common sight. The event was sponsored by Bamboo Garden Restaurant, Real
Triangle Properties, Shah Capital Management and Galaxy Cinema. Deepak
Sirdeshmukh, who walked with his three children aged 5–7 years, said “I want my
children to be aware of the CRY America cause and get them involved at an early
stage.”

f) Chicago AC: The volunteers conducted an online pledge drive which balanced the
disappointing turnout for the event due to bad weather.
g) Lexington AC | 32 participants: It was a chilly morning on the day of the Walk yet
the temperature at 36F did not act as a deterrent for those who participated. Event
sponsors were the Student Government of University of Kentucky and the
Kentucky Kernel.
A substantial portion of the revenues for this event was raised through
online pledges, with volunteers reaching out personally to their friends,
families and colleagues. We take this opportunity to thank all our donors
and sponsors across the eight cities for supporting CRY America. To all our
volunteers who put in countless hours and resources into making CRY Walk
2006 a success, our deepest gratitude.

b Uphaar 2006, Seattle AC
Uphaar, (meaning “a gift” in Hindi) is Seattle Action Center’s annual charity
dinner and was held on June 03, 2006. Running successfully for the third
consecutive year, it was organized at the Sahalee Country Club in
Sammamish, WA and attended by over 200 supporters, who contributed
generously to CRY America. Proceeds from this event supported several of our
initiatives towards ensuring that children, their parents and communities
attain what is rightfully theirs–a life of dignity and right to a happy childhood.
The event highlights were as following:
!Keynote speech by Akhtar Badshah
!A silent auction covering prints autographed by MF Hussain, one of India’s
famous artist and sculptor, to photographs and art by local artists
!Indian classical and modern dance performances by danseuse Archana
Kumar and her troupe
!A performance of popular Indian tracks by local Seattle band, AllGoRhythms
A vote of thanks goes out to all our donors, with a special mention for Anu &
Naveen Jain. And a big round of applause for our Seattle AC volunteers who
continue to amaze and inspire us all.
c CRY Dandia 2006, Seattle AC
We appreciate the participation of the 300 people who attended the event,
despite the bad weather and the efforts of our ever committed volunteers. The
event truly transformed the park into a live and vibrant space, attracting
people to learn about CRY America and its work.
Adding to mood of the evening were DJ Adam MacGregor, spinning
Bollywood favorites; local band Chaibaba enthralling the audiences and
Shankar Krish, adding a somber note to the mood with his rendition of
Carnatic music. Festival-goers also got henna tattoos and shopped from local
vendors who had set up stalls.

Seattle AC organized several events through the year. One such event which
has begun to feature in the cultural calendar of Seattle residents is CRY
Dandia which was held on September 16, 2006 this year. While the occasion
was about song and dance, it provided an opportunity for the volunteers to
talk about CRY America and the situation of underprivileged children. The
event was held in the spacious gymnasium of Inglewood High School in
Sammamish and was attended by over 600 people. Our special thanks to
Pratidhwani who kept the crowd on its feet throughout the evening.
d Festival in the Park, Pittsburgh AC
Besides the usual elements that make a 'festival', our Pittsburgh AC volunteers
were in for a surprise–the City of Pittsburgh issued a Proclamation for CRY
America at the 'Festival in the Park', saluting our work. Councilman Bill
Peduto from the City Council attended the event and read out the
Proclamation. It is a proud moment for each one of us at CRY America.

Dhamaka 2006, Bay Area AC
Our Bay Area Action Center organized Dhamaka 2006, an evening of song
and dance, on April 22, 2006 at CET Auditorium in San Jose, California. It
was an exciting evening, enjoyed by over 300 attendees across all age
groups. Prithvi, a local favorite, played popular Bollywood tunes and
popular local dance groups Jhoom, India Community Center Dance
Group, Xpressions, Dance Masti Classes and Wings dazzled the audience
with their performances. Kudos to the volunteers for the superb planning
and execution of the event!

Hoops 4 CRY, Atlanta AC
Hoops–4–CRY, organized by our Atlanta AC on November 4, 2006 was a
basketball tournament in which students, corporates and others
participated. The event had a turnout of around 120 supporters–cheering,
dancing, eating, and having a great time. The event sponsors were Boston
Consulting Group (BCG), McKinsey, Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
and several individual donors. Partnerships with college fraternity AIO and
college sorority Sigma Sigma Rho helped spread the word. We wish to
thank our participating teams, sponsors and volunteers for making our first
Atlanta event a great success.
Website Update: www.america.cry.org

organizational information available on the CRY America website.
Our online revenues grew by a staggering 65% over the previous year,
due to the generous support of 1,119 donors, across 41 states in the
USA, with a large portion contributed by donors from California.

Dear CRY America Supporter,
This is that time of the year when we get to share the real impact your
support has made towards building an efficient and effective CRY America.
In 2006, your committed partnership helped make an irreversible impact
to the lives of 41,027 underprivileged children across 602 villages and
slums in India. The generous support from our 500 volunteers and 3,103
donors enabled us to reach out to 14 grassroots initiatives in India and 1 in
the USA.
Simply put - more children went to formal government schools, more
children stayed in school and more children were rescued from hazardous
labor. Their daily battle to survive, grow, and live a life with dignity has
been an inspiration for us.
CRY America has learnt that the real barriers to change are due to deeprooted and intertwined factors such as gender discrimination, caste, class,
exploitation, livelihoods, displacement–among others. That policies and
schemes, however well–designed and adequately funded, often fail when
children, families and communities are excluded from benefitting due to
these factors.

CRY America believes that the effective way to ensure more children get an
opportunity for a better childhood is by enabling their parents and
communities. We believe this can be done by making them aware of their
rights and empowering them to seek accountability from the institutions
entrusted with fulfilling them.
The process seems complex as it tries to erode prejudices, beliefs and
habits that have prevailed since time immemorial. But it's far from
impossible. As the numbers indicate–and with our proven approach to the
issue–we know a people's movement for change is possible. Today,
hundreds of communities ensure that births are being registered. Primary
health centers have been built and those existing, have been
fully–equipped. Children are being enrolled in government schools which
are functioning and accessible to both, girls and boys, ensuring that they do
not drop out.
We go forward with a tremendous sense of responsibility and hope. The
faith and trust reposed in CRY America over these years makes it
incumbent on us to ensure that we continue to uphold the high standards
of transparency and accountability.
Going ahead, we hope that you continue your partnership with us. Your
time, money, skills, voice and ideas are critical in this journey to bring
lasting change in the lives of underprivileged children, who are currently
excluded from India's prosperity and growth.

Proceeds from this event supported several of our
initiatives towards ensuring that children, their parents and communities
attain what is rightfully theirs–a life of dignity and right to a happy childhood.
c CRY Dandia 2006, Seattle AC

The event culminated in Lexington on October 28,
2006.
The event provided hundreds of walkers with an opportunity to support a cause they
believe in. In some cities, the event has come to symbolize not just a fundraising
activity but also entertainment for the whole family–games, food, magic show,
music–ensuring that all individuals can participate in this movement in some form or
the other.

In faith and goodwill,

In faith and goodwill,

Deepak
Sirdeshmukh, who walked with his three children aged 5–7 years, said “I want my
children to be aware of the CRY America cause and get them involved at an early
stage.”

b Uphaar 2006, Seattle AC

Deepak
Sirdeshmukh, who walked with his three children aged 5–7 years, said “I want my
children to be aware of the CRY America cause and get them involved at an early
stage.”

A substantial portion of the revenues for this event was raised through
online pledges, with volunteers reaching out personally to their friends,

Uphaar, (meaning “a gift” in Hindi) is Seattle Action Center’s annual charity
dinner and was held on June 03, 2006. Running successfully for the third
consecutive year, it was organized at the Sahalee Country Club in
Sammamish, WA and attended by over 200 supporters, who contributed
generously to CRY America. Proceeds from this event supported several of our
initiatives towards ensuring that children, their parents and communities
attain what is rightfully theirs–a life of dignity and right to a happy childhood.
c CRY Dandia 2006, Seattle AC

Deepak
Sirdeshmukh, who walked with his three children aged 5–7 years, said “I want my
children to be aware of the CRY America cause and get them involved at an early
stage.”

e) Southern California AC | 100 participants: They organized another successful
walk event along the picturesque beaches of Santa Monica. The event was
supported by Symantec Corporation and Rockwell Scientific.
f) Chicago AC: The volunteers conducted an online pledge drive which balanced the
disappointing turnout for the event due to bad weather.
g) Lexington AC | 32 participants: It was a chilly morning on the day of the Walk yet
the temperature at 36F did not act as a deterrent for those who participated. Event
sponsors were the Student Government of University of Kentucky and the
Kentucky Kernel.

In faith and goodwill,
