PATIENCE PAYS OFF
“As anyone who has ever been around a cat for any length of time well knows, cats have
enormous patience with the limitations of the human kind.” Cleveland Amory
Star came to CCHS in September of 2011 because her
owner had too many pets and was struggling to give them
the care they deserved. This is one of the more common
reasons provided for animal relinquishment.
When Star arrived at the shelter she was shy, stand-offish,
and even a little grumpy with people she didn’t know. She
was a cat you had to win over.
A few days later, Star was moved up for adoption. We
knew we would need to find just the right person for Star;
somebody who saw through her cool exterior and would
take the time to get to know the sweet cat inside.
We had every reason to be optimistic. Star was
quickly warming up to staff members and volunteers
who interacted with her every day. It was a relief
to know that Star didn’t a problem bonding with
people, she just needed a little more time than
most cats.
BUT SADLY STAR WAS PASSED
OVER FOR ADOPTION TIME
AFTER TIME.
But sadly Star was passed over for adoption time after time. Even though our Adoption
Staff encouraged patrons to spend time with Star, the more outgoing cats were adopted
while Star remained at CCHS.
After three months, it looked like Star was going
to be with us for a while. We decided to move her
out of a cage and into “Cuddletown,” one of our
communal cat rooms. If she got along well with
the other cats, the communal room would give
Star the opportunity to snooze on a sofa, gaze
out the window, watch kitty t.v., and interact with
other cats. In short, communal living provides a
great quality of life for cats that play well with
others, while also providing a comfy environment

for shelter visitors. We hoped that by moving Star into a communal room
we would increase her chances for adoption. With freedom of movement
and adequate space, Star would have a chance to get comfortable in the
presence of a potential adopter before being forced to interact one-onone. We were hoping that Star would be able to choose her adopter,
instead of the other way around.
Star thrived in Cuddletown. But months went by . . . 13 in fact . . . and Star
was still here.
Then, in January 2013, 16 months after Star arrived, Laura Benoit came through the door. Laura told Kate McGinley,
our Adoptions Staff Leader, that she was looking for a feline companion for her cat, Molly (also a CCHS Alum). Laura
explained that Molly was a needy cat and the ideal companion would be a cat who would play with Molly but respect
the territory that Molly had claimed as her own…Laura’s lap. Kate knew right away which shelter cat would have no
interest in competing with Molly for lap time, and introduced Laura to Star. The match was made!
We heard from Laura a few weeks after the adoption and Star was already well-settled in her new life. Laura
thanked us for giving Start the time she needed to find a home. “Star is a very sweet and happy cat, and is at the
door most days when I get home.” Hearing that is all the thanks we need!
Caring for Long Term Residents at CCHS
While Star was a resident of CCHS, she received medical exams every two weeks. The Staff kept a close eye
on her during daily walk-throughs to check for any changes in health or behavior. “The shelter is meant to be
a temporary home for animals. We do the best we can to create a comfortable environment, provide mental
stimulation, and keep the animals active, but shelter life can be stressful on sensitive animals. If we notice a
change in physical or mental health due to stress, we will try to adjust the animal’s surroundings to reduce or
eliminate the stress,” said Kate McGinley, Adoptions Leader at CCHS.

help improve conditions for the animals. It also gives them
significant surgical experience, because sterilization prior to
adoption is a key element of reducing the problem of animal
overpopulation. The rotation has had a longtime partnership
with Champaign County Humane Society, and now with the
opportunity to visit other shelters, those communities will have
the benefit of the students’ experiential training. This is the
essence of the university-community partnership.”
Shelter medicine is a rapidly growing and newly recognized
veterinary specialty that concentrates on improving
the health and well-being of animals that live in shelter
environments.
Dr. Weedon has long been passionate about teaching, having
held teaching positions at Purdue University; University of
North Carolina, Wilmington; and University of North Carolina,
Chapel Hill. He is also passionate about animal population
control, serving on the Board of Directors of the Alliance for
Contraception in Cats & Dogs, a non-profit whose mission
is to expedite the successful introduction of methods to
non-surgically sterilize dogs and cats and to support the
distribution and promotion of these products to humanely
control cat and dog populations worldwide.
Dr. Weedon has been a mentor to students of the College of
Veterinary Medicine since he joined the Champaign County
Humane Society staff as Shelter Veterinarian in January 2011.
In addition to providing instruction during rotations at the
shelter, Dr. Weedon has been a guest lecturer at the college
and advisor to the Illinois Student Chapter of the Association
of Shelter Veterinarians. The Student Chapter has become
a robust organization, its students assisting Dr. Weedon
in conducting low-cost spay-neuter clinics and traveling
to animal shelters in other East Central Illinois counties to
provide surgical sterilization to shelter animals available for
adoption.
Dr. Weedon sees the relationship between the veterinary
college and community agencies like CCHS as a “win-win.”
Weedon explained: “The shelter medicine rotation allows
students real-world experience by working with shelters to
Now, students who take the shelter medicine rotation and
volunteer with Dr. Weedon get significant experiential
training. Many students will graduate with 60, 70, or even
100 solo surgeries to their credit. After that many surgeries,
a good student can spay a cat in 20 minutes, and a dog in 30
minutes. “That is a practice-ready veterinarian,” Weedon said.
Champaign County Humane Society Executive Director, Mary
Tiefenbrunn, is excited for Dr. Weedon on a personal level,
but also for the potential impact that an expanded shelter
medicine program could have on the community.
“Dr. Weedon has a great deal of energy and is passionate
about animal population control as well as seeing veterinary
students graduate with real-world experience. I have no
doubt that the community and the students will gain a great
deal from Dr. Weedon’s increased role at the College of
Veterinary Medicine,” Tiefenbrunn said.

FAREWELL, SARAH
Sarah Scott, longtime CCHS employee, has left the building! Sadly, Sarah’s last day as a
CCHS staff member was March 3, 2013.
Sarah started working at CCHS back in May of 2005. She began with the medical staff, in
what she thought was going to be a summer job, spent some time working in Animal Care,
and ended up in Adoptions, where she really hit her stride. While Sarah is known for her
special knowledge of all things cat, she always had great advice to offer adopters for just
about any animal at CCHS. Sarah writes, “my favorite spot in the shelter is behind the front
desk, looking out the front door into the bright sunshine to see the animals going out to their
new homes. It still makes me smile. Even though the job is really hard, it has been the most
rewarding part of my life.”
Sarah will be missed by all the staff and volunteers that worked with her. She has moved
on to a great new job with the Prairie Rivers Network. She plans to continue helping out at
CCHS as a volunteer—we can’t wait to see her back here.
