Proposal
roposal to Encode a Mammoth Emoji
Andrew West
1 May 2016
1. Introduction
This is a proposal to encode an
a emoji character representing the Woolly Mammoth
(Mammuthus primigenius),
), an extinct hairy pachyderm with distinctive long curving tusks.
A mammoth is often used as a metaphor for something gigantic, such as a “mammoth sale”.
A Mammoth emoji could be used in combination with other emoji to express sentiments
such as “Wow, that’s a mammoth hamburger!”.
Y MAMMOTH would also be
The proposed
posed character name is MAMMOTH, although WOOLLY
acceptable.

3. Selection Factors
Factors for Inclusion
A. Compatibility.
No compatibility requirements.
B. Expected usage level.
1. Frequency.
High expected frequency of use. This is indicated by the large number of references to a
mammoth emoji on social media. A sample of anonymized tweets on Twitter mentioning
mammoth emoji, mostly dating from between January 2015 and April 2016, are listed
below. Many of these tweets bemoan the lack of a mammoth emoji, and some of them try
to represent a mammoth using elephants or other animals, but there is no obvious or
consistent way of doing this.

2. Multiple usages.
The mammoth is widely used as a metaphor for something huge, usually in a positve sense.
The ‘Woolly Mammoth’ is also sometimes used figuratively in reference to excessive body
hair (see Twitter quotes above).
The Oxford English Dictionary definition for “mammoth, adj.” states: “Comparable to the
mammoth in size; huge, gigantic.” Quotations from Oxford English Dictionary illustrating
the figurative meaning of mammoth:
1801 T. Jefferson Let. 22 Oct. in Papers (2008) XXXV. 479, I recieved..a present of a quarter of a Mammoth-veal
which at 115. days old weighed 438. lb.
1802 O. Oldschool in Port Folio (Philadelphia) 30 Jan. 31/3 A baker in this city offers Mammoth bread for sale.
1803 J. Davis Trav. U.S.A. ix. 329 Its extraordinary dimensions induced some wicked wag of a federalist to call it
the Mammoth Cheese.
1822 J. Flint Lett. from Amer. 309 (note) The great cave in Kentucky is called the Mammoth Cave, although
none of the remains of that animal have been found in it.
1854 J. S. C. Abbott Napoleon (1855) I. xv. 262 All the streets of the mammoth metropolis.
1896 Westm. Gaz. 20 June 7/1 Yorkshire made another mammoth score.
1924 W. R. Inge Lay Thoughts (1926) iii. ii. 192 The new journalism, with its ‘mammoth combines’, is good
business, but bad democracy.
1956 Hansard Commons 10 May 1450 The coal industry today is having to undertake this mammoth
reorganisation because of the failures of hon. Members opposite in the years between the wars.
1974 Economist 21 Dec. 65/1 Britain's mammoth current account deficit.
1988 Squash World May–June 37/1 After relatively straightforward semi-finals..the final developed into a
struggle of mammoth proportions.

C. Image distinctiveness.
The mammoth has a distinctive appearance, with thick, reddish hair, domed head, and long
curving tusks. It is instantly recognisable, and distinguishable from an elephant.
D. Completeness.
Fills a gap in extinct animals.
E. Frequently requested.
Yes. See Twitter quotes listed above.
Instagram <https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/mammoth/> has 383,732 posts
tagged #mammoth, compared with 2,544,838 posts tagged #elephant; but considerably
more than #brontosaurus (14,625 posts) and #triceratops (71,955 posts).
Factors for Exclusion
F. Overly specific.
No. Although an elephant has connotations of large size, and the elephant emoji could be
used to denote the concept of “jumbo”, only a mammoth emoji could denote the concept of
“mammoth”, which is considerably larger than “jumbo”. Also the hairiness of the Woolly
Mammoth is an important feature which the elephant does not possess.
G. Open-ended.
No, there is only one mammoth.
H. Already Representable.
No. People have tried to represent a mammoth on Twitter and other social media using an
elephant or other animals, but as there is no ‘woolly emoji’ (which would allow mammoth
to be represented by the sequence woolly emoji plus elephant emoji), there is no obvious
way of representing the mammoth, and attempts to do so are not consistent.
I. Logos, brands, UI icons, signage, specific people, deities.
No.
J. Transient.
No. The Mammoth has been an iconic animal for over two hundred years; and has been
used with a figurative meaning since the early 19th century.
