HALIFAX HUMANE SOCIETY Est. 1937 Sprinting Toward a New Era of Animal Welfare REDINGER CLINIC NOMINATED FOR CLASSY AWARD page 4 HHS WELCOMES THE HSUS ANIMAL CARE EXPO page 6 HHS BUILDS AN INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE page 8 DOG & CAT BEHAVIOR TIPS page 17 1 SPRING/SUMMER 2014 EMAIL: [email protected] Letter from the CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER It is said that the purpose of a three or five year plan is to set goals and define a moment from which to look back. Having reached a three-year term with Halifax Humane Society, I willingly embarked on that retrospective quest myself by picking apart the successes and challenges that this organization has endured during a challenging economy. I must say that there are not many accolades in animal welfare; after all, we do this work out of an unadulterated passion to serve those who can’t help themselves. Still, spending a few days reflecting on what this staff, our board, and this community have achieved; I couldn’t imagine a better feeling. That’s the best accolade I could ask for. In three short years, our programs have multiplied and improved vastly. To be exact, the number of programs jumped from 16 to 38, the lives touched went from 15,000 to over 25,000. The award recognition followed, and shortly thereafter interests from all over the world. Individuals and organizations wanted to know how this seemingly small organization from Daytona Beach was being mentioned alongside national non-profits amidst an injured economy. Those interests resulted in our hosting of the largest animal welfare convention in the world in our own Daytona Beach, leading international education programs (both onsite and abroad), inspiring legislation, and building a mobile adoption and transfer vehicle that is being used as a national model. I’ll let you discover on your own the many other exciting new programs at HHS in the ensuing several pages. So of course the natural question is, “What’s next?” Well, throughout the incredible growth and achievements, the aging facility we have all visited on I-95 and LPGA Blvd remains the same; no longer reflecting the vision of our magnificent organization and hampering the continued progress of our mission. The first of many future developments to kick off a reimagination of what a truly humane society should be is a community dog park. It is my firm belief, and that of this board, that this organization cannot sustain its future by acquiring a fan base from adoption and intake alone. We should be a reason for animal lovers around our entire service area and beyond to gather and rejoice. We should be a reason to celebrate our pets’ stories, to plan a visit during travel, and to view the many other exciting programs HHS has to offer. Our love for animals should be infectious, and the opportunity to be contagious should be realized. The Volusia County Commission and the ECHO Committee have partially funded the project, ensuring that our limited assets continue to go where they belong, directly to our pets. However, we want to open up the opportunity to welcome partners who want to invest in the future of our humanity; individuals who believe that our area should be known for our undying love for animals and that Halifax Humane Society can inspire good far beyond the reach of our own shelter walls. Thank you for all you do for our animals, Miguel Abi-hassan Chief Executive Officer Halifax Humane Society If you would like to schedule a visit to further discuss the future plans of Halifax Humane Society, please contact Michelle Hebb at (386) 274-4703 ext. 318. In memory of our beloved friend Andé, who brightened the day of everyone he encountered as Miguel’s loyal companion and ambassador of Halifax Humane Society. It is the belief of the Society that all living creatures possess an intrinsic value, which is manifested in its creation. Further, the Society believes that mankind must become a responsible steward of animals which he has domesticated and brought under his control. EMAIL: [email protected] 3 Redinger Clinic Nominated for CLASSY Award F or the second consecutive year, Halifax Humane Society achieved the incredible honor of being named a National Top 5 Nominee for the 5th Annual CLASSY Awards. The CLASSY Awards are the highest form of recognition for charities and nonprofit groups. The award ceremony is held annually in San Diego. The weekend recognizes social achievement and encourages the brightest minds in the social sector to engage in conversation around social problems and solutions. HHS was the National Winner for Animal Advocacy at the 4th Annual CLASSY Awards for the widespread changes the organization made to improve the outlook for our community’s animals. This year, the HHS spay/neuter program was nominated, highlighted by the work of the Redinger Spay/Neuter Clinic. HHS was nominated alongside impressive organizations that included World Vets, PETA, Best Friends Animal Society, and Wild Animal Sanctuary. Opened in April 2012, the Redinger Clinic has already made an incredible impact in our community. For the first time in several decades, HHS is seeing a decline in animal intake into its shelter due to the widespread efforts to promote spay/neuter and trap-neuterrelease (TNR) programs. HHS is using the success of the program to serve as a model for other communities that are combating pet overpopulation. Between the Redinger Clinic and the HHS shelter, the organization is projected to perform nearly 12,000 surgeries in 2014. These surgeries project to decrease animal intake at local shelters and rescues by nearly 4,200 4WWW.HALIFAXHUMANESOCIETY.COM (L to R) HHS Community Outreach Director Tyler Stover, CEO Miguel Abi-hassan, and volunteer Anthony Perez pose on the red carpet at the 5th Annual CLASSY Awards ceremony. cats and 3,600 dogs. With Halifax Humane Society currently receiving over 13,000 animals each year, controlling the pet population is more important than ever. The Redinger Clinic is a key component to taking on this challenge. The Redinger Clinic uses new technology to target regions and populations most in need of help controlling Since the opening of the Redinger Clinic in April 2012, HHS has performed over 22,000 spay/neuter surgeries for both shelter animals and those owned by our friends in the community. Spaying and neutering pets has proven to be the most effective and humane method of controlling the pet population. The event took place at the Ocean Center, with Halifax Humane Society staff and volunteers chipping in to help host the conference. This year’s expo was highlighted by an opening night welcome session with HSUS President Wayne Pacelle and guest Jackson Galaxy, host of Animal Planet’s “My Cat From Hell.” Known by many as “the cat whisperer,” Jackson Galaxy is a feline behaviorist with over fifteen years of experience. On his show, he works with families to help them reign in their out-of-control cat’s behavior. He also works alongside many animal shelters and rescue organizations. 6WWW.HALIFAXHUMANESOCIETY.COM JACKSON GALAXY SPEAKS TO EXPO ATTENDEES. (COURTESY OF THE DAYTONA BEACH NEWS-JOURNAL) At the conference, Jackson was able to share ideas with shelter leaders to improve enrichment programs and ultimately save more lives. Expo attendees took advantage of daylong certificate courses on the opening day. The rest of the week featured a series of learning workshops covering a wide variety of topics pertaining to animal welfare. Guests also enjoyed plenty of networking opportunities with other animal welfare experts from around the globe, and were able to check out some of the latest technology and retail items at the event’s exhibit hall. One of the HHS dogs was also able to take advantage of the great networking opportunities offered at the expo. Wally, a ten-year-old Chihuahua mix, traveled north with the staff of AHeinz 57 Rescue in DeSoto, Iowa following the conference. Shortly after his arrival, Wally was adopted into a new forever home. Wally arrived at HHS in the fall of 2013 and had been fostered by an HHS staff member while he waited for the right opportunity. In this case, the global networking offered at the expo created the perfect solution for Wally! WALLY FOUND HIS FOREVER HOME SHORTLY AFTER TRAVELING TO IOWA FOLLOWING THE EXPO. EMAIL: [email protected] 7 BUILDING AN INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE At Halifax Humane Society, a common discussion is the concept of helping all animals, both inside and outside the walls of our shelter. In the past year, the organization has taken major steps toward doing just that. In 2013, HHS CEO Miguel Abi-hassan joined Humane Society International and the Centers for Disease Control as part of a relief team sent to Haiti. The group traveled to Port-Au-Prince to work with the Haitian Ministry of Agriculture in assisting with rabies control in the street dog population. Haiti is plagued with the highest incidence of human rabies of any country in the Americas, a situation that worsened with the 2010 earthquake. Prior to the relief efforts, less than humane treatments were being used to combat the disease. Miguel helped educate on the humane handling of potentially rabid animals and field tranquilization. Over the two-day consult, Miguel taught local officers how to use equipment including blowguns, control poles, and muzzles in a humane manner. The CDC also set up rabies surveillance procedures to monitor any reoccurrence of the disease. The relief team contributed donated medical and safety equipment to local officers that will be used to control rabies and promote safe, humane handling of animals. Earlier in 2014, Halifax Humane Society again teamed up with Humane Society International. This time, the organizations worked together to transport two dogs, Princess and Stella, from Iran to Daytona Beach. Many areas of Iran are overwhelmed with large numbers of stray dogs, and animal shelters are scarce. Because dogs are considered unclean under Islamic law, they face difficult odds of finding a happy ending and are in constant danger. In recent years, programs have been created to facilitate the transfer of these dogs to the United States, where they can be adopted through American shelters and rescues. In this case, Princess and Stella traveled via airplane to the U.S. with a handler, who stayed with them initially to help with the adjustment and keep their meals consistent. Princess and Stella’s story became very popular upon their arrival at Halifax Humane Society. The increased exposure they received at HHS allowed both to quickly find their happy forever homes. While HHS continues to prioritize its own animals, these international ventures have motivated staff and elicited worldwide attention to the great efforts being made in the area to improve animal welfare. 8WWW.HALIFAXHUMANESOCIETY.COM Milo the Tennessee Biker Dog TAKES A RUFF RIDE Story Provided by Joe Burris Milo showed up at my home one hot summer day. He was hungry, hot, scruffy, and had several scars on his back. I assumed that he had been hit by a car, thrown from a moving vehicle, or even shot at. He was only about 10 months old. My next-door neighbor told me NOT to feed him because he would never leave. Ha-ha! I headed straight to the grocery store! I learned later that Milo had been living in a cornfield for a few months and was eating the farmer’s cat’s food. He had chewed up a $50 water hose as well and that is probably what got him shot at. The farmer said he knew that Milo was a very smart dog, because he learned his schedule and knew exactly when to come out of the cornfield to eat the cat food. He was also clever enough to know that he could get cold water out of the water hose when it was over 100 degrees. I took Milo to our local humane society and they checked him over, gave him his shots, checked him for any disease, and neutered him. Then, he was ready for his first visit to the Paw Spa, which he visits every four weeks and absolutely loves. One day, after Milo had been at the house for about three weeks, I was leaving on one of my Harleys and he wanted to go with me. I could not believe it! I stopped but did not bother to turn the loud engine off. I placed him on the passenger seat and rode him around the neighborhood. He rode like a pro! I had to find a way to give him more stability, so I rigged a Coca Cola crate on the bike with a foam pad in it. He rode for two years in the Coke crate that had five-inch walls. When we were in Florida at a bike rally, we spent some rainy days building a new seat made specifically for Milo. It is equipped with a harness for his protection and my peace of mind. He has ridden with me for two years now, traveling as far as 400 miles in one day. When it rains, Milo is smart enough to wipe his “Doggles” on my back to clean them and then he sticks his head right back in the wind. Milo loves to ride and is a pro! He leans in the turns and never complains about where we go or what time we go home. He is the perfect riding partner. He now has his own Harley that never leaves the garage unless he is aboard it. We ride to work together every possible day. At work, Milo is the tailwagging greeter! He works with me at Value Cargo Vans every day spreading love and cheer. This year, Milo and I took our first Ruff Ride to support Halifax Humane Society animals during Daytona Bike Week. What a fun event! Milo and I loved the ride and we met many wonderful people. It was one of the best events during this year’s Bike Week. Milo is a great companion and co-worker with lots of love to share. I am sure that Halifax Humane Society has plenty of smart, lovable pets that need to adopt someone just as Milo adopted me! Milo and I look forward to riding in the Biketoberfest Ruff Ride and continuing to support our friends at HHS in the future. Keep your nose and knees in the breeze! EMAIL: [email protected] 9 2013-2014 EVENTS IN REVIEW 9th Annual World Series of Chili 300 hungry animal supporters flocked to Jackie Robinson Ballpark in November for the 9th Annual World Series of Chili. Teams from all over Central Florida competed for the grand prize, which was taken home this year by Heli-Hogs Hillbilly Chili. The Heli-Hogs were kind enough to donate their $500 prize back to Halifax Humane Society, contributing to over $5,000 raised for animals at the event. 4th Annual Fur Ball Gala Nearly 700 animal lovers satisfied their sweet tooth at the 4th Annual Fur Ball, which was once again “A Chocolate Affair”. The event was highlighted by live entertainment from Erin Kidd, the Crescendudes, and Shaina Harper. Along with dinner, guests were able to bid on over 200 silent auction items, and take part in a riveting live auction. The night concluded with the famous Chocolate Lounge, featuring delightful treats from many local chocolatiers. Proceeds from this event eclipsed $100,000, making it the most successful Fur Ball to date! Bike Week Ruff Ride HHS continued its recent tradition as a prime destination for Bike Week and Biketoberfest visitors by once again hosting Ruff Rides during each event. This year, the Ruff Ride became a Poker Run for the first time. Riders visited destinations including The Hideout, Roadside Tavern, and BFFAR on their way to the final destination, The World Famous Iron Horse Saloon. Over 200 riders took part in March Ruff Ride to raise funds for HHS animals. 4th Annual Mutt Strutt 5k An early morning thunderstorm wasn’t enough to keep an estimated 1,500 participants away from this year’s Mutt Strutt 5k! Hundreds of canine companions joined their owners on the World’s Most Famous Beach for a walk, jog, or dash on what became a beautiful Daytona Beach morning. Special guest Kaylee from 103.3 The Vibe kept the energy high with great tunes on the Bandshell before and after the race. Participants raised over $20,000 for our four-legged friends. For upcoming HHS event dates, please visit www.halifaxhumanesociety.org/events.cfm. 10WWW.HALIFAXHUMANESOCIETY.COM WATER SAFETY FOR PETS to come for a swim if their owner is already in the water. You can also use toys or treats as an incentive for your dog. Some dogs are built better for swimming than others. Thicker dogs with short legs, like Bulldogs, often have a difficult time staying afloat. It is a good idea for these dogs to wear a life preserver when swimming. When allowing your pet in a large body of water, such as a lake, even stronger swimmers should wear a life preserver. Summer is on the way, and many of us have opened our swimming pools and are making plans for beach and lake outings. We all love to bring our pets along on these outings (when permitted), so this is a good time to refresh our memories on a few safety tips. While most dogs will “dog paddle” instinctively, this does not always mean that they are natural swimmers. Along those lines, even though some breeds of dogs are known for swimming ability, this still does not mean that your individual dog enjoys the water. However, dogs generally can be taught to go in the water, and many learn to enjoy it. When starting out, do not force your dog to swim by simply throwing him in the pool. This can be a very traumatic experience for a dog. Some dogs do not know how to swim correctly, and will only paddle with their front legs. Their back end will begin to sink, and they can even drown. Dogs are more receptive to swimming when they enter the water on their own. Some will enter the water without any prompting, while others are more likely Dogs often get so excited about swimming that they do not know how to exit the pool. Help guide your dog to the pool steps or ramp so they can make a safe exit. Even if your dog is a good swimmer, keep an eye on them for signs of fatigue. If your dog begins breathing heavily or splashing harder while swimming, it is time to remove them from the pool for a rest. Cats tend to avoid water at all costs. Cats usually do possess the ability to swim, but should never be forced into the water. Their fur quickly becomes waterlogged, and cats can become cold very quickly in the water. Cats should only enter the water if they choose to do so on their own. Even if your cat does enjoy water, he should still be supervised. Always rinse off your cat or dog and towel dry them after they swim in a pool, lake, or ocean. The chemicals in pool water, or the salt and/or dirt in other bodies of water can be harmful to their coat and cause skin irritations. With a few precautions and a little patience, you and your pet will be able to enjoy a wonderful summer in the water. SUBARU OF DAYTONA SHARES THE LOVE WITH HHS ANIMALS In early 2014, Subaru of Daytona raised $26,500 for Halifax Humane Society animals during this year’s “Share the Love” campaign. The donation will help the community’s homeless animals and aid many programs at HHS, including spay/neuter and adoption efforts. During the Share the Love campaign, Subaru donated $250 for each new Subaru purchased to one of five selected charities. This year, Subaru of Daytona featured Halifax Humane Society as its local charity option. Along with the national contribution, Subaru of Daytona matched this donation, resulting in a total contribution of $500 for each new Subaru purchased. Subaru of Daytona’s contribution will make an incredible impact toward helping the community’s animals in need taken in by HHS. HHS relies on the backing of our friends in the community, and Subaru of Daytona has consistently stepped up as a top supporter. the World Series of Chili. In addition to hosting the Share the Love campaign, Subaru of Daytona has also been a primary sponsor of several major HHS events, including the Mutt Strutt 5K and To inquire about hosting a third-party event to support HHS animals, please contact Michelle Kress at (386) 274-4703 ext. 328. EMAIL: [email protected] 11 HHS Sprints toward a New Era of Animal Welfare I n recent years, Halifax Humane Society has garnered a great deal of attention for the changes it has made to improve the lives of animals in the community, both inside and outside the walls of the shelter. While the philosophies and programs have made drastic changes over this time, the Halifax Humane Society property has remained mostly unchanged. That is about to change as HHS is planning its first major addition to the property in over a decade. The plan centers around the development of the firstever, not-for-profit, pet-centric Travel Center and Rest Area. HHS has been awarded a Volusia ECHO grant in support of this innovative new endeavor. The Travel Center and Rest Area, serving residents and visitors alike, will be the first of its kind in the United States. Guests from both near and far, two-legged and four-legged, will be able to get out, stretch their legs, and enjoy the area. Dogs and their owners will take a walk back in time and enjoy the feel of “Old Florida” while exploring walking trails. Dogs can let loose and burn off energy in the small or large off-leash dog parks on site. 12WWW.HALIFAXHUMANESOCIETY.COM With Daytona Beach’s status as a top tourist destination, the Travel Center and Rest Area will be designed to encourage vacationing pet owners to bring their pets along on their visit to Central Florida, while providing pet travel information and referral services throughout the state. Pet travel is rapidly becoming more common, with half of pet owners now traveling with their pets, equating to 30 million people each year. With a prime, visible location on I-95 and near I-4, the newly developed HHS Travel Center and Rest Area could double walk-through traffic to the HHS Adoption and Pet Center and provide a more positive and educational visitor experience for the community. It will provide additional revenue opportunities to secure the financial well-being of the organization, while also building Daytona Beach’s reputation as a pet-friendly community. HHS would like to thank the Volusia ECHO committee and the entire County Council for their support in making this community dream a reality. After completing this class, PET 111 Dog Walking and PET 112 Cat Socialization the work can begin. In most instances, volunteers continue with their training classes inside and outside the shelter. Humane Society classes include customer service, off site events, photography, administrative work and more. For some volunteers, the interest in animal welfare becomes a path to a new vocation. Special training like dog grooming and advanced training with the humane society behaviorist are important aspects of volunteering. Proper grooming and training result in animals that look good, feel good, and find new homes. There have also been those that even become Halifax Humane Society employees. In the past year, our volunteers went above and beyond to provide over 10,000 hours of service to help our animals in need. To learn more about volunteering at HHS, please call (386)274-4703 ext. 319. 16WWW.HALIFAXHUMANESOCIETY.COM Barking & Barking & Barking My Cat’s Ruining My Furniture Sound familiar? It is completely normal and necessary for cats to scratch and climb. Cats will behave this way whether we provide a proper outlet or not. If your cat has chosen your favorite armchair as his scratching post, follow these easy tips to help your cat learn the rules. Purchase or make several scratching posts and place them in your cat’s favorite hangout areas. Be sure to place one by your cat’s bed, since cats will generally stretch and scratch immediately after waking up. Giving the cat a lot of choices helps him to choose the post rather than your chair. Rub a small amount of catnip on the post to attract your cat. Another way to encourage the cat to use the scratching post would be to hang little toys at a height where the cat would scratch to get to them. Be sure to keep treats available to reward your cat for the right behavior. Cats love to climb. Choose some posts that have a perch on top, giving the cat an opportunity to climb to the top of the room. Place some toys or cat treats on the perch to attract and reward your cat. You may also consider a window hammock or some sturdy shelves for your cat to explore. A constantly barking pup is a problem many dog owners face. Doorbells or knocking tend to be the most common triggers for barking in the home. Our reaction to the doorbell is to drop everything, quickly get up, and walk to the door. We may not realize it, but this actually trains our dog to have the same reaction! On the way to the door, we may have also added communication with our dog, “Quiet, sit, no, quiet, bad,” (fill in your own words). When a dog barks, he is alerting the family that there may be trouble. Since this is the dog’s job, we will need to redirect his behavior. Some of our behavior will need to change as well. There are some simple steps to redirect the barking. The dog is barking at the front door or running around barking. The first thing you will need to do is get the dogs attention. A loud clap works well, or you could blow a whistle or shake pennies in an empty soda can. The idea is to startle (but not scare) the dog to get his attention and refocus his mind. When your dog looks at you, immediately say, “Enough,” and show him a treat. Pat your leg directing the dog to come to you. As soon as he responds, say, “Good,” and give him the treat along with plenty of petting and positive reinforcement. Then, turn away from the door or window and say, “Let’s go.” Present your dog with something else to do; give him his favorite bone or toy, or maybe toss a ball with him. By following these steps, you have redirected the dog and given him something more rewarding than barking. If you are consistent, your dog will become conditioned over time to hear the knock or ring and run to you. Your cat may need some adjustment time to stop clawing the furniture if this has been his habit. To correct your cat, simply clap your hands loudly, and then redirect your cat to the scratching post or proper climbing area. Reward him for scratching or climbing in the appropriate area. Should the cat run and hide, you will know that you overdid it and you will have to clap a little softer next time. By creating appropriate places for your cat to scratch and climb, you will eliminate an unwanted behavior. HHS now offers Soft Claws to eliminate unwanted scratching.
