Test the Cayenne and the very notion
of what a hybrid can be.
Your first thought behind the wheel of the new Cayenne S Hybrid may very well be a
question: “How on Earth can this be a hybrid?” The answer is hybrid technology, the
Porsche way. Honed on the track by revolutionary race cars like the 911 GT3 R Hybrid,
yet translated to the road. The Cayenne S Hybrid is the epitome of the Porsche Intelligent
Performance philosophy “more from less.” Come in for a test drive and find all the
answers on the road. Just like we did. Porsche. There is no substitute.
Experience the new Cayenne S Hybrid.

From the President
pring is in the air. The birds
are chirping, the grass is
green and the sun is starting to
make an early morning appearance.
Maybe not yet as we look around
and see the grey skies, slush in the
streets, dirt on the cars and snow
on the lawns. But we can certainly
dream about the coming of the
season that embraces our desires to
get out and drive our Porsches.
the events and driving that come
with it. The get-togethers, socials
and events with our fellow INWR
members keep us in good spirits
even though mother nature conspires
against us.
We have a series of wonderful
things to anticipate this year. The
schedule of events is full of fun,
interesting and challenging things
for us to do in 2011. The club
has a new leadership team that is
determined to make this the best
year ever for our membership. We
hope you can join us at all of the
upcoming events. And for now
keep dreaming of green grass, blue
skies and warmer weather.
Winter is a tough season for
creatures like us as we stare at the
inanimate lumps of metal currently
sitting in the garages. The same
lumps of metal that seem so
animated and alive when spring
comes and we get to rediscover the
joys of driving. But what keeps us
going through these tough months is Matt Gerber
the camaraderie and friendships we President-Elect INWR
have amongst the people that share
our common desires for spring, and

Oktoberfest 2010
Oktoberfest 2010,
I
Leavenworth WA

not really.
But
Saturday’s weather
was pretty lousy.
The drive over on
Friday saw much
better weather as
28 INWR members
and friends set off in 16 cars from
the Tri-Cities and Spokane meeting
spots. Some new faces joined some
of the INWR faithful, including
Duane and Melodie Lenkersdorfer,
Mike and Laura Wilson, Debbie
Wolf and Shannon Cartier.
Although Friday (October 8th)
started off rainy in Spokane, by
the time we met up with Ron and
Judy Harris the weather had cleared
and we had a typical early Autumn
day as we headed West on Route 2
towards Leavenworth. Along the
way we passed Karch, Linda and
Angela (Karch’s mom) Polgar in
the two Polgar Porsches. A quick
phone call led to us meeting with
Polgar team just East of Wenatchee
and leading a four car caravan into
Leavenworth just in time to grab
some dinner.
very overcast skies. The rain held
off long enough for some mid
morning shopping and enjoying
the noontime Oktoberfest parade.
We made it back to the hotel to
prep for the drive just ahead of the
rain that started at 1:00pm, just
in time for our 1:30pm drivers’
meeting and departure.
What surprised me most was
that despite the rain, 15 of the
16 cars that were in the Icicle Inn
parking lot joined us for the drive.
We took the usual route West on
Highway 2 and stopped briefly at
the Lake Wenatchee State Park.
Greg and Denise Hesse, and Larry
and Shari Cowles defiantly braved
the weather for a picnic lunch at
the park while the rest of us beat
a path behind Craig Lenhart for a
cozy wine tasting at the Icicle Ridge
Winery. We had a great time and

Sunday brought the usual post
Oktoberfest departure pangs: the
weekend seemed to fly by, it was too
short and we really wished it could
continue for another couple of days.
As with all INWR events, spending
the time with the great Porsche Club
people was the most enjoyable part
of this year’s Oktoberfest. We are
already looking forward to next
year…

Find #3: 1958 365A Coupe
Follow up to article featured in the
July/August 2010 Über Alles.
N
ow for the rest of the story.
To recap my first article
regarding the 1958 356A Coupe
(my last project car). I said I would
be pulling the engine to reseal it as
there were some leaks which needed
to be repaired. With the help of
Frank Perry, Larry Cowles, and
Dick Miller, “My Engine Pulling
and Installing Crew,” the engine
was pulled.
The seller told me that he had
the engine rebuilt in California by a
reputable engine shop. It has a big
bore kit along with a Vic Skirmants
crank and bearings, a Schneider
SC grind on the cam, a lightened
fly wheel, Total Seal rings and
dual springs for the valves with
a compression ration of 11 to 1.
The engine also had NEW 40
IDF Weber Carbs. The engine
was projected at 90 plus HP. The
engine also had an after market oil
cooler and filter set up to insure
that the engine was properly
cooled. The transmission was a
work of art.
January - February 2011
When I tore the engine down
I found all those upgrades were,
in fact, present. The problem
involved the heads which were
very poorly machined. The heads
were, in fact, machined at an angle,
i.e., they were not level where they
mated to the cylinders. Because
of this, the seal between the top of
the cylinders and the heads leaked
to the point where the combustion
gas burned and subsequently eroded
the head material. I managed to find
like-new matching date number
heads that were at new factory
specs. I took the new heads to
Richard at Alpine Motor Cars
and he transferred the dual
spring valves to the new heads.
The heads were not ground
down so the compression ratio
is now projected at 9.5 to 1.
While I had the engine apart,
I took the cylinders and rocker
arms to O’Neils Custom
Engines where the cylinders
were lightly honed and the
pads of the rocker arms were welded
up and reshaped. Although the
Weber Carbs were new they were
out of adjustment, so a rebuild kit
was installed and the carbs adjusted
for proper operation.
Article by Bob Westmoreland

Diane & Bob Westmoreland
I decided to remove the external
oil cooler and flow-thru oil filter
because I wanted the engine to look
like a 356 engine and my research
told me that an aluminum oil cooler
is much more efficient than the
stock steel oil coolers. I installed an
aluminum oil cooler in the original
location under the fan shroud along
with an original equipment oil filter
canister. The engine was detailed
and now looks like a 356 engine
should look. My personal mechanic
Tom (knows everything there is to
know about tuning) Johnson came
over and in an hour the engine was
running and sounded very good.
My “Engine Pulling and Installing
Crew” came over and with minor
difficulty the engine was installed.
I drove the car to the October
Saturday coffee at the Spokane
Porsche Dealership which was its
maiden voyage. It ran, but not
very well. I took the car home,
Tom came over (he wanted to
drive his new Boxster any way)
and we did another tune up with
another carb adjustment. We
found the float level was set
too low as were the accelerator
pumps. I drove the car to the
November Coffee. The second
time it ran very well. The engine

good, especially at idle.
In short, the car is everything
The owner told me that the tach I expected except for the rebuild
did not work because oil had come of the top end. The only parts I
up through the tach cable and into the replaced were the heads and the oil
tachometer. That required sending return tubes which were damaged
the tach to Palo Alto Speedometer from the improper seals and the
for a cleaning and adjusting. I also oil cooler. After the machine work
had to install a new cable housing everything else was reused.

was from the multiple connections was not surprised that the heads

and that is why he provided me
with new rebuild kits. Remember
this is a car he has been working
on for almost 20 years but had less
than 2000 miles on the rebuild. It
had been almost ten years that the
engine had been in the car.
Now the really good news: he
paid for “all” the parts, and “all”
the machining that went into the
engine.
This winter, I will finish the
detailing of the interior and the
exterior.
Give things such as
lights and the electrics a complete
checkout and have it ready to go for
the 2011 Wine Tour.

Cayenne Tech Session
Tech Session: The New 2011
Cayenne S Hybrid
O
ur annual Tech Session
was held at Porsche of
Spokane, on Saturday
November 20, 2010. Mattias
Brischle, Master Technician
with Porsche, led the session
where we were presented
the new 2011 Cayenne S
Hybrid. If you have never
been to one of Mattias’s
technical presentations, they
are a real treat. He spends
hours beforehand prepping
the vehicle by removing panels,
bumpers, wheels, headlights and
more so we can really see all
the intricate technical systems
unobstructed.
The Powerplant
The presentation started by
showing us the new hybrid
powerplant. The gasoline engine is
a VW/Audi sourced Supercharged
3.0L V6 engine. This engine is also
used in the new Audi S4. Normally
“S” in a Cayenne model name
signifies an 8-cylinder engine. But
in this case it is the “equivalent
of an S.” The combined output
is 380hp (333 for the 3.0L V6 gas
engine and 47 for the electric motor/
generator).
Acceleration from
0-60mph takes only 6.1 seconds.
This is a very torquey flexible

powerplant.
For example, at
1000rpm the powerplant produces
428lb-ft of torque (stoplights
should be fun…). In comparison,
the standard Cayenne S has 400 hp
and 369lb-ft of torque at 3500 rpm.
The gasoline engine has direct fuel
injection (DFI) and VarioCam Plus
(variable valve timing and lift) on
intake and now also exhaust. The
Supercharger, made by Eaton,

version (Twin Vortices Series),
and is of the Roots type design.
Based on my research, I believe it
is set to about 0.8 bar of boost and
has about 20hp of parasitic loss at
full power. The powerplant is a
full parallel hybrid system, which
means it can run on entirely electric
or gasoline power, in addition to a
combination of the two. Mattias
showed us how many systems of a
full hybrid require modification for
running in entirely electric mode.
For example, the air conditioning
compressor, power steering pump,
transmission fluid pump, and ABS
vacuum assist/brake boost function
have new components that are all
electric (and in many cases much
lighter). For this reason, many
manufacturers take the cheaper

solution of offering a partial
hybrid vehicle, in which the
gasoline engine is always
running, and the electric motor
provides additional help.
But this is not optimum for
fuel efficiency. Interestingly,
Mattias showed us a small
20oz water bottle that had
only a few ounces of water
in it. He said that the 288V
NiMH electric battery bank
(built in partnership with
Sanyo) when fully charged provides
about the same “fuel” as that much
gasoline. Porsche estimates the
mileage at 21 City/25 Highway,
which is approximately 30% better
than the Cayenne V8 model it is
closest to in performance.
Hybrid Module
The gasoline engine and the electric
motor/generator are connected to
the wheels via a “Hybrid Module”
which is computer controlled. This
module coordinates the power flow
as required using sophisticated
algorithms to maximize fuel
efficiency while maintaining an
unobtrusive feel of the switching.
Switching between modes of
electric and gas takes only 300ms.
The module also directs recharging

and the regenerative brakes. The
battery charge is kept between 45
and 75 percent of capacity. The
vehicle is allowed to coast upon
lifting the accelerator to save fuel.
Porsche calls this “sailing” and is
allowed up to speeds of 97mph
for one mile. During sailing both
the engine and electric motor are
completely shut off. Most hybrids
use coasting only at low speed for
short periods of time, so this is a
first. The car can use electric-only
power up to 37mph, but obviously
not at full acceleration. There are
two additional buttons on the center
console. With “E-Power” selected
the vehicle will stay in pure electric
mode at higher speeds and greater
throttle inputs. With “Boost Mode”
selected the electric motor provides
assistance with 70% or more of
throttle input. Otherwise, it takes full
throttle to get additional help from
the electric motor. The “decoupler”
which connects/disconnects the
power flow is an interestingly
designed “separating clutch.” It uses
a regular friction material clutch but
is activated electronically...no doubt
an offshoot design from the lessons
learned with PDK transmissions.
Transmission
Fitted to the Cayenne S Hybrid is
a new 8 speed Tiptronic S automatic
transmission with particularly wide
ratios. First gear is optimized for
fuel-efficient starts from a dead
stop and top speed is reached in
only 6th gear. Gears 7 and 8 are
overdrive gears to reduce the revs
for even more fuel efficiency in low
load situations. The all wheel drive
system on the Hybrid model is also
a new system. For weight savings
and other reasons (most likely tuning

it to the unique
requirements
of the hybrid
systems), Porsche
chose to go with a
different all wheel
drive system from
other Cayennes.
I could not find
much information
about the new
system other than
it is a permanent
all wheel drive
system with 42%F/58%R torque
split under normal conditions, and
it contains an automatic centerlocking differential.
Facelift for 2011
The 2011 Cayennes are 2 inches
longer and have updated looks on
both outside and inside. Though
bigger, they are designed to look
less intimidating and more compact.
At first glance you might think these
are much smaller vehicles than the
previous generation, but that is an
illusion. The Cayenne S Hybrid
tips the scales at 4,938 lbs, which
is about the same as a previous
generation Cayenne S. But the new
standard Cayennes are each about
500 lbs lighter now, so the 2011
Cayenne S Hybrid will definitely
feel a bit heavier compared with the
other 2011 Cayennes, but will handle
every bit as good as the previous
Cayenne S. Weight savings is
achieved by use of lightweight
components and generous use
of aluminum. Doors, hood, and
decklid are all aluminum. The
2011 interior is the Panamera
inspired interior with the unique
banked center console and the
circular high resolution 4.8 inch
TFT color screen. This screen is
reconfigurable and can display vast
amounts of information quickly with
a stalk on the right of the steering
column. It can even display a GPS
map for Navigation.
Pricing begins at $67,700 for
the 2011 Cayenne S Hybrid, in
comparison the 2011 Cayenne S
starts at $63,700.
Many thanks again to Mattias and
the team at Porsche of Spokane who
did an excellent job hosting us and
providing an exceptional technical
presentation. The new Cayenne S
Hybrid is a marvel of engineering
and we really enjoyed seeing all
the inner workings. Many thanks
also to Just a Couple of Moms who
catered our wonderful, delicious
lunch. The baked brie in puff pastry
was amazing!

Pedro’s Garage:
Reading Our Tires

here is a lot of useful information included on
the sidewall of our tires.
We’ll try to simplify it by taking it one part at a
DATE OF MANUFACTURING
Tires actually have a shelf life. It is recommended that
tires over 6 years old be removed from use.
Obviously, tires that are subject to permanent UV
damage from the sun can deteriorate sooner than those
that are protected from the sun’s rays.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in
particular the National Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) has required tire manufacturer’s to stamp
the date of manufacture right on the tire’s sidewall, but
they’ve allowed them to code that information.
Prior to 2000 manufacturers could stamp the code on
the inside of the tire, but the NHTSA mandated a few
years ago that the code be moved to the outside of the
tire, allowing the manufacturers to phase in this information with a deadline of 2009.
Article and photos
by Pedro P. Bonilla, GCR PCA
Reprinted with permission
The last four digits 3507 tells us that this particular
tire was manufactured in the 35th week of the year
2007.
Prior to the year 2000, only three digits were used.
The first 2 were for the week, but only one digit was
for the year, so there’s no way to determine from what
decade that last digit is from.
In this TIN: DOT EJ8J DFM 408
The last 3 digits 408 tells us that the tire was manufactured in the 40th week of 1998 (or 1988, 1978,
1968...).
SERVICE DESCRIPTION
On the sidewall, you will also find tire’s Service
Description which identifies the Load Index and the
Speed Rating.
Let’s study the following example: 225/40ZR17 94Y
Since 2000 the last four digits of the TIN (Tire Identification Number) includes the week (first 2 digits) and
year of manufacture (last 2 digits).
Let’s look at the following TIN: DOT H2LF YA9J
3507
The first part corresponds to the tire’s physical size
(more on that later) and the last grouping corresponds
to the Load Index and Speed Rating.
The 94 corresponds to it’s load carrying capability. In
this particular case an Index of 94 corresponds to a
load of 1477 lbs (670 Kg). The higher the Load Index
(LI) number, the higher the tire’s load capacity is.
The typical Load Indexes for passenger cars range
from 70 to 110 (following is a sample):

The “Y” is the Speed Rating, which in this case signifies that the tire’s maximum speed is186 mph (300
kph).
If this Speed Rating were in parentheses) i.e.: (94Y) it
would signify that the tire has been tested at speeds in
excess of 186 mph (300 kph).
January - February 2011
When Z-speed ratings first appeared on tires, it was
thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that
would ever be required, in excess of 149 mph. Because high performance automobiles keep getting
faster and faster, the industry added W- and Y- speed
ratings to indicate the tire’s maximum speed:
W = 168 mph (270 kph) and Y= 186 mph (300
kph).
Elsewhere on the sidewall there is still more information, such as the Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG)
Standards. These Standards spell out the Treadwear,
Traction and Temperature (Resistance) Grades.
TREADWEAR: Is a relative number because it indicates the relative wear compared to a test tire.
What’s important is that the higher the Treadwear
number the longer lasting the tread will be.
TRACTION: Indicates the tire’s straight line wet
coefficient of traction. This grade does not evaluate
braking, or cornering in dry conditions, wet cornering
or high speed hydroplaning resistance.
The different traction grades are:

ROTATION: Many of today’s high-speed tires have
the rotation marked as well. Either by indicating
the direction of rotation or by the word “OUTSIDE”
which indicates that that part of the tire should face to
the outside.
Many of today’s tires are also asymmetrical and unidirectional, meaning that the tread pattern is different
side-to-side and that they are meant to rotate in one
direction only.
This means that they cannot be transferred from the
left side of the vehicle to the right side or viceversa.

Dubai and F1 Races
Dubai and the F1 Races
I
t was a cold winter morning
in February 2010 at the Inland
Northwest Region’s monthly
social meeting at Porsche of Spokane
when long-time member Klaus
Huschke approached me with an
especially appealing idea (thoughts
of sunny and warm) – organize and
lead a group of Zone 6 region PCA
members to meet our counterparts in
Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Klaus
mentioned November is an ideal time
weather-wise to visit the UAE, so
later that day, I went online to check
the average weather for Dubai for
early-to-mid November – sunny and
90’s – and checked the F1 website
and Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Race
Circuit site to determine 2010 dates
for the F1, GP2 and Porsche GT3
Cup races. Thus began our journey
of a lifetime.
Prior to beginning the planning,
I sought advice regarding how
to promote the trip from Zone 6
Region Rep Dave Cooley and PCA
Executive Director Vu Nguyen. Both
positively encouraged me to move
forward and shared appropriate
protocol for contacting Porsche
AG, Porsche Middle East, Porsche
Club of UAE, and how best to reach
out to Zone 6 PCA presidents to
communicate the trip.
We confirmed November 6 – 16,
and the trip included some very
unique and exciting components
– flying on Emirates’ A380 aircraft,
the world’s largest passenger jet,
visiting the world’s tallest building,
the Burj Khalifa, 2,717 feet (our
group would visit the observation
deck, floor 124), with the world’s

fastest elevator (40 mph), a
catamaran cruise off Dubai’s coast
with the world’s largest man-made
island, palm tree shaped Palmiera
Island near the famous sail shaped
Al Arab Hotel, a desert safari and
sand dune excursion, and of course,
the season beginning GT3 Cup and
season ending Formula 1 races in
Abu Dhabi. Airfare, luxury hotel,
ground transportation, tours, meals
and race tickets were reserved in
June to provide a very reasonably
priced package. Eight members
from Inland Northwest and Wild
Rose regions signed up immediately.
Two more INWR members joined
us in mid-June for a total group of
ten enthusiasts originating from Tri
Cities and Spokane, Washington,
and Calgary, Canada.
I had heard the camaraderie of
Porsche Club members is well
known around the world. During
the planning, I reached out to Karim
Al-Azhari, President, Porsche
Club of UAE and emailed Porsche
Middle East & Africa. Karim
immediately responded, confirming
the club’s interest in hosting us and
I also received a favorable reply
from Porsche Middle East. During
subsequent communications, Karim
mentioned the possibility of a group
drive. By the time we landed on
November 7th, the Porsche Club of
UAE had made grand plans for us
– we just didn’t know it yet!
One of the first events we
participated in was a tour of Dubai.
Our tour leader learned just about
all she could handle from us as
we pointed out all the various
Porsche models that were passing
by our coach, those parked at office
buildings or shopping centers. We
all agreed none of us had ever seen
so many Porsche’s in one day. Not
surprisingly, the majority were newer
models: Turbo Cayenne’s, GTS’s,
Panamera’s, Carrera 4S’s, Turbo
Carrera’s and a few Cayman’s. Of
all the models we saw, the Cayenne
was the most popular.
Our second day in Dubai would
prove to be the highlight of the
entire trip – we were met at the
hotel by Karim and four members
of the Porsche Club UAE, with five
cars – two GT3’s, a Cayenne Turbo
and two Panamera’s, a Turbo and
4S. Karim is a Porsche GT3 Cup
driver and the two GT3 owners,
Pierre Santoni and Nader Zuhour
are DE Instructors. Members Adel
Arslan, Club Secretary and Alix
Cobasson, Events Coordinator,
completed the driver’s roster. By the
way, the Panamera’s were on loan

found out the dealer sells upwards
of 1,000 Porsche’s each year and
club members are many of their best
customers. Of course.
Two of our INWR members,
Shirley and Chuck Rodman, who
own a Cayenne and 911, and friend
Eleanor Hill, opted for the first ride in
the Panamera Turbo. Our Canadian
members, Wild Rose Club President
Erik Dumas, his girlfriend Mary
Poulitsis and Doug Connon, and our
two other INWR members Keith
Graves and Ray Burg, rode in the
Turbo Cayenne and the Panamera
4S. Klaus wound up in the gray GT3,
and the only Porsche left for me was
the beautiful blue and yellow GT3.
Darn! After quickly getting out of
Dubai, they loosened up the cars
and collectively we were easily up
to the 120 kph speed limit. Dubai
authorities allow a 20 kph slack in
the speed, so until you get over 140
kph, no one gets a ticket. In Dubai
proper, they employ fixed radar sites
with the occasional mobile radar
units parked alongside the road.
Once you exceed the posted speed,
the radar unit takes a picture of your
license plate (camera flash) and
your ticket arrives in the mail a few
days later. Our drivers were familiar
with this system and quickly slowed
January - February 2011
We headed east across UAE to
the city of Fujairah, on the Gulf of
Oman. Along the route we saw lots
of sand dunes and even mountains,
which no one expected. During the
ride our hosts, being very familiar
with the highways, got the cars up
to speeds in excess of 270 kph. It’s
generally accepted drivers may
exceed speed limits in the desert.
All of us felt totally comfortable at
these speeds, as the roads were very
smooth, had little traffic, Porsche’s
are made for this, and our drivers
were entirely professional. In the
Panamera, one just doesn’t get a
sensation of speed even though we
knew we were moving right along.
Because the roads are new and level
with wide shoulders, the feeling of
speed was not readily apparent – it
was a very comfortable ride. Every
Porsche owner dreams of roads like
these. We motored on, switched cars
after a spirited (and loud) passage
through a tunnel along the route,
and two hours later, pulled into
the Hilton Fujairah for a delightful
lunch overlooking the Gulf. Our
table was next to a beautiful beach
and Keith, Eleanor, Erik and Mary
took the opportunity to splash in
the water. The UAE Porsche Club
managed to pick up the tab – superb
Porsche hosts they are!
On the return to Dubai, the
smooth ride of the Panamera 4S at
speeds in excess of 200 kph actually
lulled Shirley to sleep. That speaks
well about the handling, suspension
and ride of the Panamera. The
drive through rugged mountains
(but smooth roads) with significant
curves surprised us. We were all
highly impressed with the overall
comfort of the Panamera. Alongside
the roads, we saw what we thought
were wild camels. Our hosts told us
that there no longer are wild camels,
only camels that are let out for the
day and returned to their corrals
at night. It was neat to see camels
“in the wild” rather than in a zoo.
Further on, we encountered some
rainsqualls and in several places
the rain had washed debris and left
excess water on the road, causing
us to slow down dramatically. Dry
again, as darkness fell, several of the
cars got “flashed” by a fixed radar
site just outside of Dubai. We felt
bad our hosts would receive tickets
– they simply said, “It happens.”
The Porsche Club UAE presented
us with logo coffee mugs and caps

– very classy! We presented them
with INWRPCA badges, Porsche of
Spokane T-shirts, and our Wild Rose
Region PCA members presented
badges too. It was a delightful end to
a wonderful day and a super drive.
Karim provided me with a phone
number for Doreen Huwe, Porsche’s
Events Specialist, Middle East &
Africa, who offered to arrange a
personal tour of the Porsche display
at the race circuit.
Day four took us to Abu Dhabi
for the first day of race activities at
Yas Marina Circuit. We took a taxi
from our Dubai hotel and again, so
many Porsche’s on the highway.
The first stop was the new Ferrari
World attraction – a BIG red roofed,
tent like structure, visible for miles.
Besides just about every new, old
and race car models housed under
one roof, the world’s fastest roller
coaster with a top speed of 240 kph,
or 149 mph, is a huge attraction.
Unbelievably fast with rocket like
acceleration (pulling up to 4.6 G’s),
riding the coaster created a mind
numbing experience that lasted only
95 seconds! It was exceptionally
difficult to open your eyes during
the ride. At the top of the initial
rise, we were lifted off our seats and
then soundly re-attached, remaining
glued from the G forces for the
rest of the ride. WOW!!! I wasn’t
satisfied with one run and wanted
January - February 2011
to be in the front car, so I opted to
go again. The front two riders are
given goggles, so the experience is
even more enhanced because you
can actually see! As I returned from
my second run, I was excited to see
the two Ferrari F1 team race drivers
Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa
queued up to take the front car. Very
cool!
Heading to the shuttle to the race
circuit, we walked by a children’s
area where pedal cars representing
several Ferraris were placed on a
small race track. It seemed like a
natural – group picture. We had
a young boy join us, his mother a
bit surprised adults were sitting in
these small cars taking pictures, but
she encouraged her son to join us. If
only they were toy Porsches!
Arriving at the Yas Marina
Circuit, we were all quite excited to
check out every aspect of the course
and facilities. Thursday offered fans
completely open access to all areas,
and we made the most of it. To our
surprise, the Porsche display was
across from our reserved section, so
we spent a lot of time admiring the
six historical cars brought in from
the Porsche Museum.
Doreen Huwe welcomed us,
handing out cool water bottles and
personally greeting each participant.
We could not take enough pictures of
these famous Porsches, collectively
photographing every car from every
angle. To be that close to an original
Gulf 917, Martini 908, the 911 GT1
and the Spyder 550 was incredible.
The display seemed to be the most
popular at the race, with so many
race fans admiring the cars. Of the
many interesting visitors, perhaps
none were more interesting than the
ladies on stilts. Another highlight

for me was meeting one of the GT1
mechanics, who had flown in from
Germany for the event. We look
forward to seeing Porsche back in
F1 in the future – Porsche’s presence
at this event made us feel proud to
be owners.
After an incredible adventure
in the United Arab Emirates, we
returned to reality – a cold and
snowy Pacific Northwest and
Alberta, and for most of us, our
Porsche’s securely stored away for
the winter. The memories will last
a lifetime, the friendships made
halfway around the world equally
as long, and the allure of Porsche’s
cars, its history and their people
continue to leave that magical
impression on each of us.

Xmas Party (cont.)
To the person who ended up
with the dramatic Chet Hinman
photograph of the white GT1 on a
grassy field with storm clouds in the
distance: the Editor would like you
to know that your photograph was the
cover of the July/August 2009 issue
of Über Alles. Congratulations!!
The fun evening came to an end
and we all said our happy thanks
to our hosts after Kelly Dionne’s
closing thoughts: Kelly noticed
that the entire future of the INWR’s
leadership had traveled together in
one vehicle and that there should
be a Club by-law against that. In
one vehicle were President Kelly
Dionne, Vice President Matt Gerber
and his wife Janet, Vice PresidentElect Klaus Huschke, and Zone 6
Representative Dave Cooley. They
all arrived back home safely. As did
we all.
I wonder if that tiny dancer
will actually end
up spinning on a
dashboard one day.
Merry Christmas,
Everyone!

OLD BUSINESS:
The Tech Session with the Cayenne
hybrid was another outstanding
event at Porsche of Spokane.
Mattias and the crew were gracious
enough to treat the INWR to a
stripped version of the latest hybrid
vehicle on the market and all that
was heard was, “wow.” The
technology was amazing and as
usual, Porsche’s build quality is
second to none. The brakes were
a work of art! Stop by when you
can to thank the staff at Porsche of
Spokane for taking the time, and it
took a lot of it to pull this off, and,
that we do appreciate all they do for
us.
Board Meeting: The 2011 schedule
was hammered out with 3 new
events added this year. 1) The
SOVREN races in June. This looks
like a possible hallmark event
for the region and for Porsche.
2) A TSD Ralley for the charity
Lighthouse for the Blind with the
charity recipients riding in the
Porsches as Navigators. It should
be a blast for them as most have
never ridden in a Porsche let alone
try to navigate by Braille. 3) A
Show and Shine event in mid
September somewhere between
Spokane and Tri-Cities is on track.
The town of Washtucna has whole
heartedly offered their hospitality.
We are still waiting for the fine
tuned details.
The Christmas Party: Thank you
to Nate and Suzy for yet another
wonderful event at the fabulous CV
Luxury Cars location in the TriCities. The dealership is the perfect
venue for a car lovers Christmas

Reps from PCA national were in
town to meet with local PCA officers
and convention center staff about
the possibility of Spokane hosting a
PCA Parade in 2014. The National
representatives were guests of the
Spokane Visitors and Convention
Bureau and toured the convention
center, major hotels including The
Davenport, Spokane’s Riverfront Park
as a possible Concours location, as
well as Spokane County Raceway
as a the site for the Autocross. All
members present were excited about
the prospects and as PCA provides
staff and logistics to help clubs
there were no concerns regarding
overwhelming the INWR. It’s just
a preliminary study but hopefully
Spokane will get the call.
