program. Therefore, every student who does not sign up for the Oak Grove milk program will be
responsible for bringing in their own beverage next year to each of the PTO lunch days.
THANK YOU

Registration Correction
Your registration packet for next year included a physical exam packet. The letter
states that a physical examination is required for students entering 5th grade. This
is incorrect and the correct grades that are required to have a physical examination
include incoming students in kindergarten, 6th grade and all new students
entering from an out state school. If you have any questions, please call Sandy
Magdalener at 847-367-4120, ext 2011.

No Nominee
Each week many K-4 students receive a "Gone Wild With
Character" nomination. These are displayed on the wall
across from the Pat Patt gym. The following students names
were randomly picked this week to say the Character Counts
pledge on Monday morning. Congratulations to all the
students who were nominated this past week!
National Writing Consultant
On Friday, Oak Grove School hosted
Kristina Smekens, a well respected
consultant in "6 Traits Writing". In
the morning, Ms. Smekens taught
mini lessons at seven different grade
levels to demonstrate the teaching of
writing. While she taught our
students, teachers and administrators
observed from the back of the room.
After the students went home on
Friday afternoon, Ms. Smekens taught
all of the teachers about the "6 Traits of Writing". She will return on August 18 for a
full day training with the staff to launch the school year with writing. Our teachers
written evaluations indicate that this was a very valuable training experience.
Parents will be learning more about the “6 Traits” as we implement them throughout
the school next year. If you would like to learn more: www.smekenseducation.com
Board of Education News
MASTER FACILITY PLAN
The Board is engaging a architect firm to design a Master Facility Plan for the school. The plan should
be complete within 6 months. At the May Board meeting, the Board voted to suspend plans for the
cafeterias and other renovations until after the facilities plan is completed.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESTRUCTURING PLAN
The Board voted to support the administrator restructuring plan. Although we could continue to
be successful with our current structure, the administration has created an enhanced design for the
school. Even though we will remain one Oak Grove School tied together by our Strategic Plan, our
Curriculum Coordinating Council, Board of Education and Administrative Council, the school will
be divided into three units to serve as schools within a school. Julie Waehner will be principal of the
K-2. Dave Karolewicz will be principal of the 3-5 and Mark Clement principal of the 6-8. Teachers
are all assigned to one of the three "schools". Each school will make recommendations on curriculum
and instructional practices for the children they work with to the CCC. The schools will have a "whole
child" perspective since they will work within their school to design plans for children with special
education, learning support or gifted needs. Ms. Waehner will remain the District Special Education
Coordinator and Mr. Clement the District Gifted Coordinator but the principals will lead the work
with the children in their own schools in this areas. We are excited to begin this new plan in the Fall
and feel it will serve the parents, staff and children.

Dear Parents,
We, as Technology Teachers, are recommending that students practice their
typing skills over the summer. The school district has purchased a web-based
version of the program Type to Learn 4 that is available to your child from
home. This is the same application that the students have been using at school.
A goal of 20 minutes once a week would be appropriate for most children.
If you are interested, go to http://ttl4.sunburst.com/downloads/ to get the
application as well as the Client Upgrade. You must download both in order
for the program to work. It works on both PCs and MACs. If you need help,
you can download the Quick-Start guide. This has step-by-step directions for
you.
Your child’s username is the same as their login name (year graduating and
last name, ex: “16mccarty” with NO spaces). Everyone has the same
password of “123.” The first time you use the program, you will need the
account code of “100522.”
As a reminder, students should be using the correct finger positioning
whenever they are typing. Typing can be practiced in many forms: writing an
email to a family member, writing a summer journal entry, or writing a story.
Any practice will help improve typing skills.
Enjoy the summer!

take 1st Place team trophies in both sections, but also won top honors
