During the 27th edition of the world’s
leading art and antiques fair, The European
Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) at MECC Maastricht,
the whole city will be bustling with impressive exhibitions, unique theatre and music
productions, breathtaking dance perfor­
mances and special events.
Enjoy the rich musical palette of the twoday event Jazz Maastricht with headliners
including Raul Midón, Craig Taborn, and
Ntjam Rosie. The philharmonie zuidnederland orchestra takes the stage for the most
beautiful sunrise in their show De mooiste

Bonnefantenmuseum is presenting Beating
around the bush episode #1: a collection of
contemporary art in dialogue with installations by István Csákány and Mark Manders and

het Vrijthof. Learn about the region’s artists

Music: ‘Z.O.Z.’ is a musical programme starring lighthearted and nostalgic songs from the 30s, 40s and 50s.
Opera singers and performers from Fontys School of the
Performing Arts will take you on a vocal journey through
France, Germany, America and the Netherlands of the last
century. Featuring well-known melodies of Gershwin,
Porter, Rodgers & Hammerstein and Kurt Weil.

16 MARCH AMATI ENSEMBLE
Music: It’s the 10th anniversary of TEFAF concerts for
Amati. The programme includes the Septet in E flat major
by Beethoven and Schubert Octet in F major, both well
known jewels in the chamber music repertoire. Enjoy a
concert with a combination of strings and winds that rarely
occur together, starring the world-renowned clarinettist
Karl Leister.

Music: A classical concert by this 15-year-old cellist, who
has been playing the cello since the age of seven, is a member of the Maastricht Academy of Music’s ‘young talent
class,’ and is also the first cellist of the Limburg Symphony
Youth Orchestra Amikejo. Accompanied by pianist Tessie
Kalthof (her mother), she will be presenting a varied
classical programme.

BALLET PRELJOCAJ
Dance: Angelin Preljocaj, also known as ‘the new
Diaghilev’, is one of the Grands Seigneurs of the French
ballet. In ‘Les Nuits’ he is inspired by the beautiful and
fascinating Arabian tales of Thousand and One Nights.
A breathtaking performance with distilled sensuality
and eroticism by twenty dancers on stage. In cooperation
with the Stichting Cultuur en Bedrijf Maastricht and
supported by Institut Français Nederland.

Theatre/architecture: TAAT (Theatre as Architecture
Architecture as Theatre) is a multidisciplinary collective
that operates where theatre, architecture, art and design
meet. HALL01 is the first in a series of 32 sub-projects
that lead up to HALL33: a building as a play, and a play

Music/Film: 4 dreams on 4 screens, 20 young vision and
sound artists, 20 young musicians, 40 minutes of immersion in sound and image. ‘Morpheus Dreams’ is a project
conceived, created and performed by students of the audio­
visual department of Mad Genk Faculty and students of
the Jazz Department of the Conservatory of Maastricht.

Dance: ‘La Constellation Consternée’ is a clean choreogra­
phy in five scenes where dance, light and sound painted a
sophisticated reinterpretation of stars. In varying combi­
nations five dancers interpret the emotions they evoke:
loss, hope, faith, injustice and pride. This performance
heralds the Dutch première of one of the Jeunes Premiers
of the French dance: choreographer Thomas Lebrun.

Dance: The narrative choreography ‘La Jeune Fille et la
Mort’ is performed to the commanding ‘Der Tod und das
Mädchen’ by Schubert. The original poem by Matthias
Claudius describes the irresistible attraction that leads a
young girl to her death. Exactly that premise is what the
dancers, along with live music, evoke in this choreography.

Music: The most beautiful sunrise in symphonic music
literature. A moment of silence turns into a mesmerizing
sound. A master choice by Ravel who starts the Second
suite with the ballet of Daphnis et Chloe. This moment is
introduced by Debussy’s overwhelming ode to the sea and
two masterpieces for piano and orchestra.

‘HouseCryingYellowTears’ was founded in 2013. In ‘The
white forest with the forgotten people’ the performers convert a forgotten landscape full of sadness, pain and perversity to a world of joy. The white forest gradually gains color.

Theatre: After ‘K, a society’ dramatist and artist Kris
Verdonck condenses the world of German playwright
Heiner Müller in one image in ‘M, a reflection’. On stage
actor Johan Leysen is talking to his double through texts
by Müller. Both images – the real actor and his double –
reflect each other literally and figuratively. As in our
society, ‘real’ and ‘fake’ are inseparable.

Theatre: ‘De Toverpiano’ (the Magic Piano) is a family performance about an ordinary boy, Otto. His father has big

to sit at the piano, upright, balancing a book on his head.
It drives him crazy! But that is not all that is afoot in Otto’s
house. Slapstick, tragedy and lots of music.

Seminar: During this seminar, the effects of music on
the brain will be explained by Professor Elia Forminsano
on the basis of progressive brain research carried out by
Maastricht University.

Music: The 12th edition features exciting combinations of
world-renowned artists and young talent at four stages. The
trio Vloeimans-Florizoone-Brinkmann opens on Saturday
at the main stage, followed by trio Avishai Cohen, and solo
acts by Raul Midón and Craig Taborn. Besides contrasting
celebrities the festival stars plenty of surprises, including
Simin Tander, De Beren Gieren and local talent. 14 concerts
in total! On Sunday the top musicians are Ntjam Rosie, on
the verge of an international break­through, and the dynamic piano trio The Bad Plus. Preceded by a jazz and dance
performance by the Predance Academy of Kumulus and
Conservatory of Maastricht.

On its visit to Maastricht, this touring exhibition will
introduce you to the often surprising developments within
landscapes in the art of the 15th to 21st century. You will be
taken on a journey from early European landscape art to
modern-day photography and video art. And finally, the
museum is displaying the mediaeval woodcarvings from its

IN PERSPECTIVE
Against the background of the current reform of the
European Common Agricultural Policy, Bureau Europa
dedicates the exhibition ‘Mansholt, Landscape in
Perspective’ to the way agriculture has determined the
lay-out and shape of the Dutch landscape after 1945.
Hallmark of the exhibition is the work of former minister
of agriculture Sicco Mansholt.

such as visual designer Albert Kiefer and Kim Zwarts.

11 MARCH–1 JUNE REFLECT NATURE !
The Maastricht artist, Désirée Tonnaer, presents a special
selection of her work. ‘Natura Artis Magistra’ - nature is the
teacher of art. Tonnaer’s art is inspired by a cycle of fertility,
growth, and decay. Her sculptures are enlargements of
inconspicuous details in nature, mainly created in bronze.
The exhibition focuses on two aspects of her work: the
‘autonomous’ sculptures and her monumental work in
public spaces.

BOOK & PRINT FAIR (MABP)
During the 7th edition of this well-known interna­
tional antiquarian fair, Maastricht’s gothic Sint Janskerk
(Church of St. John) will become an Aladdin’s cave for
collectors and lovers of antiquarian books and engravings. Around 30 renowned national and international
antiquarian book traders will present their most valuable items, ranging from mediaeval manuscripts to treats
for bibliophiles, from books about photography and
architecture to modern art. This year’s cultural fringe
programme is entitled ‘Boek aan de Wand’ and will be
held (8-21 March, free entrance) at Notariskantoor Team
Notarissen, with exhibits from more than 40 book
illustrators from the Euregio Meuse-Rhine.

A unique event is due to take place during the final
weekend of TEFAF: the Vrijthof square in Maastricht
will be transformed into a genuine polo arena. The

MADE IN MAASTRICHT
During TEFAF, Maastricht will surprice and delight
visitors in the city centre with the traditional and
impressive shop window parade. This year, the TEFAF
Parade has the theme ‘Made in Maastricht’. The work
of more than 35 divergent artists will be on display in
various shop windows dispersed throughout the city.
From photographers, fashion designers, and illustrators
to architects, interior designers, musicians, choreo­
graphers, and even tattoo artists; from emerging talent
to established names: they all have at least one thing in
common: the city of Maastricht! A beautiful collection
– never exhibited before – of graphic sketches and
designs by Maastricht-based artists in poster format.
