The Daily Family in Hamilton County
The Daily Family in Hamilton County
DALY
The surname (O) Daly ( and its variants Daily, Dailey, Daley etc.) is O Dalaigh in Irish, deriving form Dalach meaning ‘one who is present at
assemblies’; the root word is Dail, now the official title of the parliament of the Republic of Ireland. A connection is possible between the
meaning of the name and the long tradition of scholarship and poetic achievement associated with those who bear it, since the ollamh of Gaelic
Ireland had a place of honour at the tribal dail as a man of learning and a poet. The medieval genealogists located their homeland in the present
Co Westmeath, and they spread throughout the county by acting as ollamhs to the most prominent families. From a very early date families of
the name were also prominent in Co. Cork, and especially in the area around the peninsulas of Muintervarra, or Sheep’s Head, in west Cork.
The likeliest explanation is that the name had a separate origin in the south. Even so, the O’Dalys of Desmond had an equally strong association
with poetry and learning: so potent were the poems of Aonghas O Dalaigh of Ballyroon that he was murdered by one of the victims of his
satires. The name is now common throughout Ireland, with the greatest concentrations in the south and west, and in Co. Westmeath. (see
Daily_Folklore.pdf)
Y-DNA: The family of John W. Daily of Hamilton county has an unusual Y-DNA record in that one of the markers used by the Family Tree
DNA organization, DYS456, has a NULL value. This is shared by only a few men who have so far taken the Y-DNA-37 or greater test, see
Family Tree DNA NULL-456 project at https://www.familytreedna.com/public/null456/default.aspx?section=ycolorized . The Forster member,
who is a resident of Australia and has never lived in the USA, can trace his genealogy to Northumberland/Durham counties England 1695. A
possible indication from where this line came from ! (see JohnWDaily&Mary.pdf Appendix C )
John W. Daily (Dailey), Sr. was b. ca 1774 in VA and d. 26 Oct 1865 in Hamilton Co., IL. He and his wife, Mary (Polly) , are buried in Ten
Mile Cemetery. He was a charter member of this church which was started in 1820, one of the three oldest churches in IL. He was married in
Pittsylvania county Virginia in 1800 and was one of the early settlers of Hamilton Co., for he and his family were there in 1820. The travels of
the family can be followed by the birth place of the children listed below. The evidence is that they were in Green county Kentucky for a while.
Exactly who his parents were and where they originally settled is uncertain! However, for a discussion of the most recent research results see
JohnWDaily&Mary.pdf Research that seems to indicate that he possibly was born in Henrico county Virginia.

M. Daily on the internet since he reportedly
died at the battle of Vicksburg and
remembered seeing a photo of a monument
with his name on it ?
Found him listed as Dailey

FREEDOM
Located at Tour Stop 2, near the Shirley House, is the Illinois Monument. Modeled after the Roman Pantheon, the
Illinois Monument was dedicated on October 26, 1906. There are 47 steps leading up to the entrance, one for each day
of the Siege of Vicksburg. Inside are 60 bronze tablets listing the names of all 36,325 Illinois soldiers who participated
in the Vicksburg Campaign. Narrative by Ed Conner, TN
He should be listed in the 87th Infantry, Company A, to the top of this photo, but
photo quality is poor.
If you want to visit his memorial here are the maps from off the internet.
