Confident Girls and Netball Dads* campaigns are about
giving those who can least afford it, the chance to thrive
through netball.
The Campaigns aim to give disadvantaged girls the chance
to play netball and enjoy netball’s benefits:
• Building confidence on and off the court
• Developing teamwork, leadership, communication
and resilience skills.
• Experiencing good health (physical and mental),
recognition, achievement, enjoyment and a sense
of belonging.
• Strengthening communities and empowering girls.
• Making friends and having fun.
(*The Netball Foundation recognises that all families are different and
uses “dads” in the broadest sense – a supportive mentor figure – might be
a grandparent, brother, uncle, cousin or a family friend – what’s important
is that they support girls on their netball journey.)
DIAMONDS CIRCLE
The journey to play netball for Australia is long, with many
sacrifices and rewards along the way. Financial rewards
are inadequate compared to male counterparts and media
coverage for women’s sport is not as high as it is for men’s
sport, resulting in less exposure and consequently less
commercial support. Despite this, the Australian Diamonds
are inspiring a new generation of women who aspire to
succeed on and off the netball court.
Netball Australia is seeking to enhance its investment in the
Australian Diamonds pathway by expanding the Wellbeing
Program to all identified athletes in key support areas, such as
mental health, lifestyle management, advanced rehabilitation
practices, transition into retirement and in hardship.
Netball can and does makes a difference
in the lives of women and girls.

A MESSAGE OF THANKS
Welcome to the Netball Foundation’s inaugural Donors Report. This report
acknowledges and celebrates you, our donors, as well as the women and girls
who have benefited from your generosity.
After eighteen months of planning, Netball Australia was delighted to launch
the Foundation in 2015 to raise money to help women and girls achieve their
full potential both on and off the court. There are two cornerstone initiatives
of the Netball Foundation; the PlayNetball Fund provides opportunities for
disadvantaged girls to play netball and enjoy netball’s benefits, and Diamonds
Circle enhances investment in the Australian Diamonds pathway by expanding
the Wellbeing Program.
In our first nine months, the Netball Foundation reached more than 17,500
participants in every state and territory across Australia, with 51% of this reach
in rural and regional areas. In 2016 we plan to expand our reach and programs
and will engage a research partner to measure our social impact given sport is
such an important tool in gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The Netball Foundation was delighted to partner with the Australian Communities
Foundation around the possibilities for Sports Philanthropy in Australia.
Unfortunately, sport does not meet the legal definition of charitable regardless
of motivation or the benefits to the general public that can result. This affects
grant making for trusts and foundations. A focus in 2016 will be to continue to
advocate for policy reform.
Our success over the last 12 months would not have been possible without the
Australian Sports Foundation. This partnership enables tax deductibility and
Deductible Gift Recipient status. Many thanks to Patrick Walker, Mark Thompson,
Sandra Sweeny and Jaime Firman for their unwavering support and commitment
to making the Netball Foundation’s inaugural year a success.
I would like to acknowledge the drive and determination of Netball Australia
Chief Executive Officer, Kate Palmer and Netball Foundation Head, Nadine
Cohen in making the Netball Foundation a reality this year. Their hard work will
undoubtedly be rewarded in the coming years as the Foundation grows stronger
and has the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of women and girls.

Netball described as the best medicine for Gunbalanya
Melbourne Doctor Katie Macartney, during a three-month posting in Gunbalanya,
an Aboriginal community in West Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, was
approached by women from the local Aboriginal community and the school
keen to get young girls involved in sport. As a netball coach, Dr Macartney, with
the support of the local community youth centre, “Team Health” and Netball
Northern Territory started running Inclusion NetSetGO.
“I’ve seen a lot of enjoyment and happiness when the girls are playing,”
Dr Macartney said.
“I have seen girls develop more confidence on and off the court and I have
seen certain older girls lead the group interpreting the rules of games into
language and organising the players on the court”.
“I have gained a lot from netball – as well as other sports – and place value
in the development of teamwork, leadership skills, health and fitness. Seeing
the locals gain some of these benefits
as well as having a really fun time was
very rewarding.”

their children from the sidelines were
thrilled to see their daughters playing the
sport they had once loved. The teenage girls
took pride in mentoring the younger girls,
a relationship which will ensure netball is
sustainable within the community.”
The community doctor was also full
of praise for Dr Macartney, Netball NT and
the sport of netball, saying he had never
seen such positive health promotion.
Netball helping young WA player blossom
Rising talents like West Australian teenager Rose Aryang is one of the reasons
why the Netball Foundation has been established.
Aryang moved to Australia with her family from the African country of Ethiopia
when she was just one year old and settled in the small town of Midland,
half an hour north-east of Perth. She didn’t start playing netball until she was
around 11 years old, but was encouraged by teachers to take up the game
because of her height.
Aryang said netball has been a great help integrating into Australian society,
given her confidence on and off the court, learning about the importance of
being fit and healthy and having fun.
“It’s been a huge part of helping me meet other girls and I’ve really enjoyed
playing,” Aryang said.

Ensuring the wellbeing of our precious Diamonds
Diamonds Circle, run in partnership with the Australian Sports Foundation, has been established to empower current,
past and emerging Australian Diamonds to achieve their full potential off the court and to help ensure Australia remains
the number one netballing nation in the world.
Diamonds Circle was officially launched at Netball Australia’s ’Memories and Milestones’ lunch attended by past and present
Australian players, which celebrated their contribution to the history and heritage of Australian netball.
Netball Australia President Noeleen Dix, who played four Tests for Australia in 1981, said: “to be selected in the Australian
Netball team is a major achievement in a young woman’s life.”
“I was selected to represent Australia when I was at the prime of my life and just establishing myself in a teaching career.
“I understand the range of issues and opportunities that young women encounter on their journey to achieve their netball
dreams and, having made it, to find their feet and move on to the next stage of their life.
“Diamonds Circle seeks to support our athletes in areas such as physical and mental health, career, personal and professional
development, transitional support and in adversity.”
Diamonds Circle will work closely with the Australian Netball Player’s Association to enhance netball’s wellbeing program.

OUR CHAMPIONS
Arena Jetz gather community to support Confident Girls
Arena JETZ Netball Club in Melbourne’s South East donated $1 for every
registered player in their teams and raised more than $500 by donating
the proceeds of a sausage sizzle and cake stall to the Confident Girls
campaign. President Kerryn Weickhardt said, “you develop lifelong
friendships through netball and it’s also a great network for women”.
Australian Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander said success stories like Arena
JETZ makes grass roots netball so strong.
“It’s fantastic to see local clubs like Arena JETZ getting behind the Confident
Girls and giving their time to raise funds to allow their fellow netballers in
disadvantaged communities to play and participate in the game that we all
adore.” Alexander said.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Australian community and netballers,
like those involved with running Arena JETZ, are special indeed.”
Young netballers unite for Confident Girls
Teenager Caitlin Ardill and her netball club St Bernadette’s in New South
Wales raised $501.50 for the Confident Girls campaign.
After seeing the campaign advertised on Facebook, 13-year-old Caitlin
rallied her teammates and raised money through a combination of online
donations and a raffle at the St Bernadette’s junior presentation night.
Generous organisations, community members and Caitlin’s teammates
all donated items to be raffled on the night, creating a total of three prize
packs with items including a pink game day pack, a signed and framed
NSW Swifts poster and netballs.
“I wanted to raise money because I met a lot of my friends through
netball and I wanted to give other girls the opportunity to meet new
people and play netball too,” fundraiser Caitlin Ardill said.
“I gained a lot from netball so it’s nice to give it back to other people.”
Netball World Cup inspires Northern Suburbs Netball
Association
The Northern Suburbs Netball Association in New South Wales raised
$2,950 for the Netball Foundation through the Confident Girls campaign.
After hearing about the Foundation through the Netball World Cup, the
Northern Suburbs Netball Association thought it was a great opportunity
to align with the international tournament and raise money for netball.
Through generous donations from sponsors and the local netball
community, the Northern Suburbs Netball Association held an online
auction that included items such as two Netball World Cup Gold Medal
Match tickets, coaching sessions and items from local businesses.
“We rallied around and within 10 hours we had over 12–15 items to
auction on the day,” Association Treasurer Renee Bates said.
“People should concentrate on the Netball Foundation so they understand
what netball is about, and really not take for granted the opportunities that
they have at their local netball club.”

WHO YOU HELPED
Netball helps attendance at Wugularr School
Netball is helping the children at Wugularr School, about 120
kilometres south-east of Katherine, thrive thanks to teacher Sarah
Mullucks. Teaching in a multi-year classroom of 20 upper-primary
children, in a school with 110 students, Sarah introduced netball
to a place where children knew only basketball and football. School
attendance rates have increased for the students playing in the
netball team, as well as for the younger students. Students in the
lower primary classes see the enjoyment and success of the netball
team and are keen to be involved themselves when they are in
the upper primary class. Sarah has also seen improvement in the
classroom with greater cooperation and teamwork, as well as
increased confidence and leadership in the girls.
The Wugularr team play in the Katherine Netball Association and
two of the Wugularr girls have played at the NT Championships in
the Katherine Netball Association representative team.
The Katherine Netball Association competition has teams with both
indigenous and non-indigenous players, all in the one integrated
competition and Sarah Mullucks has been pivotal in the development
of the inclusive ethos and culture at Katherine Netball Association.
Sarah and the netball team have had an impact on both their
community at Wugularr, as well as in Katherine and at Katherine
Netball Association.
Engaged students at Old Guildford Public School
Old Guildford Public School has more than 400 students, including
98 per cent students from non-English speaking backgrounds.
The School’s underlying philosophy is that happy, engaged
students are more likely to achieve their full potential. So when
the opportunity to have an Inclusion NetSetGO program at the
school came up, they grabbed it with both hands.
The netball program benefited the school’s culturally and
linguistically diverse students, breaking down language and cultural
barriers. As the school’s children discovered a love for the sport
through the Inclusion NetSetGO program, it boosted their physical
and mental health, provided fun and a sense of belonging.

Shepparton Access Inclusion NetSetGO program builds
confidence
Eight adults from Victoria participated in a weekly Inclusion NetSetGO
program through disability support service Shepparton Access in 2015.
Each week the participants would learn and practice basic netball skills
and rules through the provided NetSetGO resources.
“Being an old netball player and a netball mum myself, I really wanted
the group I work with to get into some health and wellbeing and
exercise and also understand that they can still participate in
competitions out in the community,” Disability Support Worker Melissa
Elliott said.
The group’s weekly sessions cumulated at the end of the year where
they participated in the state titles in Bendigo.
“Taking the group to Bendigo was just an amazing experience, they
absolutely loved it,” Elliott said.
Elliott believes the program has been great for promoting inclusion in
the community, with three participants looking to join a Saturday
competition in 2016.
“Netball is about being a part of a team, and being out in the
community and meeting new people. Participating in a sport with
other people is probably one of the big benefits,” Elliott said.
“I think it gives the group confidence to go out and join in the
community.”
Netball promotes teamwork in young students
learning by distance
45 students from Northern Territory’s distance education school
Katherine School of the Air, played netball through Inclusion NetSetGO
for the first time in 2015.
Students were visited by the school’s Netball Ambassador Leanne
Bugg as part of their Health and P.E program, and participated in the
program’s activities in small groups of three to four.
The Inclusion NetSetGO program was also undertaken during the four
contact events throughout the year, when all students come together
in town.
“The kids absolutely love netball,” Bugg said.
“Many of them don’t get to play team sports in our context very often.
So to be able to be a part of a team and play sport that is so inclusive,
we are able to build on their foundation skills.”
Bugg said the main reason the school wanted to implement netball was
to allow students to explore the value of teamwork and working
together to achieve something.
“In our context it was important to have that opportunity,” Bugg said.
“It was really good because netball is a game that can be adjusted
to include the real younger students with basic ball skills, the preschoolers, right up until the older ones, who were keen for a game.”

WHO YOU HELPED
Netball helps form friendships at Itiki
As far as Mariella Teuira is concerned, if a child wants to be involved with
one of the sporting teams coordinated by the Itiki Sporting Club of Glenroy,
she’ll find a way to make it happen. The Itiki Sporting Club is a multicultural
club based in Melbourne’s northern suburbs and exists for the social and
community development of disadvantaged communities.
Among the sports available through the club is netball and Teuira said
numbers are constantly growing for its weekly Inclusion NetSetGO program
as more and more children discover the game either through their school or
family and friends. The club gets support from the Netball Foundation and
Netball Victoria to run Inclusion NetSetGO program and also relies on local
communities to help raise funds.
“We engage with disadvantaged youth and families and kids who feel
isolated because they come from different backgrounds” Teuira said.
“I’ve enjoyed watching the kids grow as a team, build friendships and their
confidence develops along with their netball skills.”
The club also enters teams in the weekly competitions at the Coburg Netball
Association and CitySide Sports in Footscray. The club services a big area in
Melbourne’s north and places a big emphasis on children attending school.
Teuira says she gets great satisfaction by watching the development in all
aspects of their lives.
“Last year we had a young girl who came from an underprivileged family –
she was one of five children – and she was bullied at school,” Teuira said.
“Through playing netball, she’s started getting more confidence and her
school started selecting her to play in their team”.
“This year she’s come back to play and has brought along her younger
brother as well. Netball gives them an outlet”.
“Because of the area we look after, we have lot of kids coming from different
schools. But it’s been great to watch them grow and build friendships and
see their skills develop and want to push to the next level.”
School students at Port Lincoln
Port Lincoln is a country town located 650km from Adelaide. With one
special school for the entire Eyre Peninsula, the students were excited to
learn they would be running an Inclusion NetSetGO program within the
school. The entire school participated in the weekly program, and when
Australian Diamond Rebecca Bulley made a trip to see them, it was the
highlight of the program.
Without Inclusion NetSetGO, the students would have never been given
the opportunity to be coached by an Australian Netballer and enjoy netball’s
benefits. Some now hope to play netball in their local competition.

Meachey’s Deaf Sports for ACT
Deaf and hard of hearing children enjoyed an Inclusion
NetSetGO clinic as part of a Deaf Sports Day supported
by Netball ACT and the Netball Foundation.
With many of the children experiencing netball for the
first time, coaches were briefed and educated on how to
best teach the children the basic skills of netball through
the Inclusion NetSetGO program, helping the children to
participate in a safe, enjoyable and fun netball environment.
The program was enjoyed by many, showing that being
deaf is no barrier in netball.
Friendships forged through Melaleuca
NetSetGO
Netball NT was provided with funding by Inclusion NetSetGO
to provide multiple programs to Melaleuca Refugee Centre’s
youth of refugee and migrant background.
Those who participated were aged between nine and 21
years old from a range of cultural backgrounds including
Sudanese, Congolese and Iranian.
“These programs have received positive feedback from
participants, many of whom had not tried netball before,”
Youth-focused Counsellor Linda Hopkinson said.
“This meant the youth were introduced to a new sport and
given something fun, social and physical to do during their
school holidays.”
“Programs such as these help newly arrived youth to connect
to their wider community and make new friends.”
“Melaleuca Refugee Centre is truly appreciative of the
Inclusion NetSetGO program Netball NT and the Netball
Foundation provide, and we look forward to continuing this
relationship into the future.”

GOVERNANCE AND FINANCIALS
In March 2015, the Netball Foundation was established and its powers, duties and terms of reference where delegated
to it by the Netball Australia Board pursuant to Clause 34 of the Netball Australia Constitution. The Netball Australia Board
will formally approve the composition of the Netball Foundation Panel in 2016 and a Netball Australia Director will be a
member of the Panel.
The Netball Foundation Panel will provide financial oversight, compliance, grant making and advice to the Netball Australia
Board. An update on the Netball Foundation’s activities is provided at each Netball Australia Board meeting.
The Netball Foundation Panel is required to meet at least three times a year, and at least once a year, the Head of the
Netball Foundation meets with the Netball Australia Audit and Risk Committee.
The Netball Foundation Panel, at least once in each financial year will have its performance assessed as prescribed by
the Netball Australia Board.
Netball Foundation Panel members are not remunerated.
