THIRD GRADERS MEET THEIR PEN PALS
On Wednesday, May 13th the third graders from York Haven Elementary had the opportunity to
meet some new friends. Throughout the school year, the children and residents/staff of Country
Meadows of Leader Heights in York have been writing letters back and forth. The culminating activity for this pen pal experience was a field trip to meet and spend time with their new friends. Exciting to see the generations interact - - the children and seniors both benefit from this time together.

What are the Goals of the SS/HS (Safe Schools Healthy Students Grant)?
The Federal and State Agencies overseeing this grant have created very specific guidelines for the spending of grant
dollars and an extensive amount of time was spent assessing our community’s strengths and needs. The outcomes of
this assessment were compiled and from that, the following plan has been developed.
The goals include:
1.
Improve Early Childhood Emotional Learning and Development- Developing children’s social and emotional skills that will lay the foundation for future healthy interpersonal relationships,
association with non-violent peers, and improved academic achievement.
2.
Promoting Mental, Emotional and Behavioral Health
Increase access to mental health services for students and families on site at all 8 school buildings.
3.
Connecting Families, Schools, and Communities
Increase students, families, community members and agencies in planning and implementing programs and activities that assist students.
4.
Preventing Behavioral Health Problems (including Substance Abuse)
Provide programs to prevent or reduce substance abuse and improve student’s behavior and academic success.
5.
Creating Violence Free Schools
Identifying and addressing issues, conditions, behaviors, and structures that contributes to unsafe
school environments, bullying and violence in schools.
