FACT FILE Brief History ASIQS was originally a Quranic Science program that was then called Innovology and was managed by Innovology Solutions back in the year 2010.Started as a monthly science seminar conducted in mosques and suraus around Klang Valley, ASIQS developed its program into a comprehensive school curriculum. In 2012, the curriculum was first implemented in a venture with Dimentika Sdn Bhd, the owner of Sekolah Integrasi As Syakirin. ASIQS was then named As Syakirin Institute of Quranic Sciences. A year later, ASIQS operates independently and was wholly owned by its three founding fathers, Mohd Ashraf Bin Mohd Nor, Ust Idris Husain Al Hafiz and Mohd Shamsul Bahari Rosli. ASIQS was renamed Ash Shura Institute of Quranic Sciences. Today, ASIQS has become an upcoming and respected institution that firmly holds on to its original aspiration; propagating Quranic sciences to children with hands on, fun and effective methodologies and in a friendly and loving environment. ASIQS Mission “Jack of all trades, master of Quran.” To establish an innovative and continuously improving organisation dedicated to learn, research and propagate the sciences of Quran. To develop, plan, implement and control a comprehensive Quranic Sciences curriculum that put Quran as the centre and motivator of all sciences and the development of just and fair society. To develop, implement and monitor innovative, engaging and effective teaching approaches and learning aids that could spark curiosity, facilitate the thirst for knowledge and enhance higher order thinking. FACT FILE Values & Culture I. We believe that every child has his own unique potential and talent given by Allah to play important role in our society. Therefore we ought to recognise whatever talent he or she has. We will seek and try our best to unleash whatever potential he or she has without any preference. II. We work only for Allah and His Messenger and therefore we ought to give our heart and soul in the way of Allah and His Messenger. In relation to worldly matters, we take what we need but we give more than what we take. III. We believe that Hidayah come only from Allah not from us. Therefore, our job is to do our best in continuing the work of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and to never give up when our work is in vain or not appreciated. IV. We believe that things are constantly changing and therefore we ought to always go out of our comfort zone by learning new things, implementing new approaches and methodologies, and always seek to analyse the needs of our students and society from different perspectives. V. Though we run ASIQS like a business entity, profit is only for us to sustain and continuously developed. Our top priority will always be our students, not ourselves. Quranic Science is an evidence-based study on the meaning of Quran from the verses of Quran itself, from the sacred words of Prophet PBUH, his Sahabah RA and his household RA. Through the apprehension of sound reason and application of senses, the sacred meaning of the Quran will be related to individual’s personal experience, so that the Words of Allah and His Messenger PBUH shall be learned, practiced and appreciated whole heartedly. Learning Quranic Sciences involve obtaining knowledge and practicing skills that are necessary to understand, think and practice the teachings of Quran, such as linguistic skills, thinking skills, social and communicative skills, natural science, philosophy, history, geography, memory and logic. In order to further understand what Quranic Sciences are, we need to understand the comparison between the so called modern sciences and the Quranic Sciences. Quranic Sciences differ in all the three components of the philosophy of Science; The motive (Ethos /Axiom) The subject matter (Ontology) The source of knowledge (Epistemology) The motive (Ethos /Axiom) The subject matter (Ontology) The source of knowledge (Epistemology) THE CURRICULAR APPROACH Al Badr’s 4Ts Al Badr Curriculum 4Ts is a curriculum that was developed with an intention to establish an institute dedicated to research, practice and propagate the sciences of Quran. However, developing a syllabus that will recreate and transform the conventional science into Quranic Science is a difficult task. Often than not, we tend to adopt the conventional sciences and the conventional examination alongside the traditional way of learning Islam and Quran. Our society defined integration of Quran and academic subjects as learning both fields under one roof without any relation between the two. Our intention on the other hand, is to unify both fields as one. In other words, instead of having two subjects, Tafseer and Science, we have a subject call Quranic Thoughts that focuses on understanding various verses in the Quran that are related to the environment, ecosystem and natural phenomena. It will be done through analyzing the verse itself, the Hadiith, the empirical induction (through experiments) and logical deduction (studying the logic and credibility of various scientific theories). Our curriculum puts Quran at the center and other sciences are studied in order to understand the verse and to enable students of ponder upon those verses at a higher level. Regardless the varieties of their names, the six subjects are: Quranic Thoughts (QT) Quranic Civilisation & Sociology (QCS) Quranic Living Skills (QLS) Quranic Research Skills (QRS) Quranic Memorisation (QM) Quranic Communication & Propagation Technology (QCPT) SUBJECTS OFFERED Quranic Thoughts – Seeing the big picture This subject deals with questions that everybody asks. Who am I? Where did I come from? How did the world and the universe come into being? What am I doing in this world? Where do I go from here? What will happen in the future? How does the universe work? Do I play any role in this universe? These are the questions about life, God, meaning and purpose of life. There are many verses in the Quran that shed light upon this matter. Quranic Thoughts focuses on these verses. The subject is intended to set the theoretical framework in understanding the Quran, the cosmology and Islam. Reasoning skills and system thinking skills are being polished throughout the syllabus. Among the topics that are taught in the subject are Tawheed, Astronomy, Geology, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Tasawwur, Philosophy, Mathematics and environmental science. SUBJECTS OFFERED Quranic Civilisation & Sociology The main objective of the subject is to enhance students’ understanding on the verses of Quran that are related to the history, geography and sociology of major personalities such as the Prophets and their ummah, the reason why a certain verse had been sent by Allah, and to apply socially and ethically related verse in the modern society. This subject also bring the students to analyse how human civilisation was established, how and why it crumbled, starting from the time of Adam PBUH until now. At the end, student will learn what will the society be without the Quran and the Prophets, how do they practiced the Quran and what impact do they brought by practicing the Quran. SUBJECTS OFFERED Quranic Living Skills Once the students acknowledge the greatness of Quran, it’s time to put theory into practice. Students spend less time listening to lectures but spend more time doing what is being taught by the Quran. The lessons are conducted through practical experience, project based learning, case study to let them analyse and solve different problems related to Fiqh, applying the ‘Rukshah’ (exceptions in Fiqh) and analysing current issues on how to live life better, such as financial planning, the Fiqh of online trading, time management, etc. The subject is a combination of Fiqh and Syariah, living skills, leadership and management skills. It was designed using the constructivism approach, i.e. same basis are taught over and over again but at a deeper and broader level. For example, in the topic of cleanliness, it starts with wudhu’, and goes on to cover cleaning body, environment, mind, management of Jenazah, simple home improvement and at the highest level, it covers waste water management SUBJECTS OFFERED Quranic Research Skills (QRS) QRS focuses on the linguistic aspect and the literature of the Quran. The main objective of the subject is to equip the students with necessary Arabic language skills, Ulum Al Quran and Hadith to enable the students to use the Quran as guidance and inspiration for their future life, i.e. the life after ASIQS. The subject was conducted in three stages. At the foundation stage, the focus is on the ability to read and write Arabic correctly. The second is to develop both Quranic vocabulary and grammar to help them understand the Quran at least at the basic level. Students are systematically train to break the compound words in the Quran, find the root words and analyse how the grammar in the compound word changes the meaning of words. The third level focuses on major Exegesis literature such as Tafseer Ibnu Kathir and Tafseer Al Azhar. During this stage, they are also being simultaneously exposed to learn the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. SUBJECTS OFFERED Quranic Memorisation There are two approaches being used at ASIQS. The first is the normal rote rehearsal method that is the repetition of Quranic verses to conserve them in the short term memory. The second method is the elaborative rehearsal method. Using this method, students understand the meaning, lessons and the story of each verse before they repeat the verses. Through this method, the text and sound of the verses are kept in the short term memory whilst the meaning, stories, emotion and lessons are kept in the long term memory and with the help of Allah will sink into their subconscious mind. SUBJECTS OFFERED Quranic Communication and Propagation Technology (QCPT) There are three main components of the subject which covers both English and Malay language. The first is the development of language skills to understand intellectual literature. Students are exposed to quality reading materials that enhance their language skill, critical thinking ability and general knowledge. The second is the development of language skills for effective and ethical communication. Students are being trained to apply correct grammar, appropriate style of writing and speech, good presentation skill, systematic idea organization skills and the Akhlaq of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. The third component is the mastery of technology that enables creative and effective communication such as Adobe Creative Suite, photography, copywriting, video editing, web design, social media, mobile computing, animations and programming. All the components are conducted simultaneously. Certification and Academic Pathway ASIQS offers three in house certifications and a few external certifications. The three in house certifications are: Foundation Certificate in Quranic Sciences (English, Science & Mathematics equivalent to Key Stage 2) Certificate in Quranic Sciences (Science and Mathematics equivalent to Key Stage 3, English equivalent to European English Competency level B1) Fellowship in Quranic Research & Propagation (English, Science and Mathematics equivalent to Key Stage 4/ NQV Level 2) The external certifications are: Cambridge/Edexel’s IGCSE – Science Stream Cambridge Nationals Certificate in Creative iMedia* Cambridge Nationals Certificate in Business Studies* Co-Curriculum Activities There are three components of ASIQS co-curricular activities namely: Islamic Arts Qasidah & Khat Classes Monthly Maulid Program Club & Society Technopreneur Club Community Service Club Maintenance & Home Improvement Club Sports Soccer Nerf Badminton Archery Building, Facilities & Equipment ASIQS is currently operating in a two story bungalow at an exclusive and quiet residential area in Jalan Monsun, section 8 Shah Alam. The 8468 sqf bungalow has a main hall with the maximum capacity of 80 pax at a single time, 2 large classrooms with the capacity of 16-20 students each and 3 small classrooms with the capacity of 8-12 students each. The premise also has outdoor dining hall, comfortable compound, a research studio, a staff room and an office. There are a total of 8 bathrooms in the premise. In the year 2014, ASIQS had reached its maximum capacity of 80 students at 6 different levels. ASIQS management had no other option but to add another premise in order to fulfil the waiting list of students who would like to register for the 2015 session. VILLA ASIQS Though operating in a relatively small school, ASIQS is well equipped in terms of audio visuals. All classes are equipped with projectors, PC with internet connection and sound system. Some classrooms are also equipped with visualizer, interactive projector and digital microscope for effective and impressive presentation. ASIQS has mobile science laboratory equipment set that is able to conduct almost all biological, physics and chemical experiments related to IGCSE syllabus. ASIQS currently has 6 powerful optical microscopes, a telescope and a geoscope to facilitate scientific observations. On top of that, ASIQS has unique mobile mathematical laboratory equipment that consists of various colourful, interesting, durable and meaningful manipulative to enhance hands-on mathematical teaching. Human Resources ASIQS workforce is currently powered by 12 full time highly committed and talented teachers, 5 foreign experts and a Centre Manager to ensure the effectiveness of our teachings and operation. ASIQS is managed by the board of directors of Al Badr Curriculum which is comprised of four members: Non-Executive Chairman, Mr Mudassir Bin Abdullah. Mr Mudassir Bin Abdullah is an engineer by training and is serving Celcom (M) Bhd as the Chairman of ‘Koperasi Celcom. Banking on Mr Mudassir’s years of technical and corporate experience working with Malaysia’s leading telecommunication company, he sits on the board to share his corporate experience and advising the board members on matters relating to corporate governance and strategic management. Managing Director, Mr Mohd Ashraf Bin Mohd Nor. Mr Mohd Ashraf is an accountant by training and had the working experience as an auditor for two chartered accounting firms, Sia, Singam & Young Partners, and Nordin Jaafar. Prior to joining ASIQS, he had also served as a financial accountant for an American-based MNC, Johnson Controls Inc. Mohd Ashraf is in charge of the ASIQS’ financial management, business development and general administration. Director & Principal, Ustaz Idris Husain Al-Hafiz. Graduated with a degree in Tahfiz wal Qiraat from University of Al-Azhar, Ustaz Idris Al-Hafiz is the institute’s Principal and the head of operations. A former Imam of Surau Section 9 Shah Alam and a former Mudir of a Tahfiz center in Jenjarom, he has a wide teaching and administrative experience. He is responsible for the overall day to day running of the school and students’ performance especially in Quran memorization, understanding and overall wellbeing. Director & Senior Teacher, Mohd Shamsul Bahari Bin Rosli. Mohd Shamsul graduated from UiTM with a B. Eng (Hons) in Civil Engineering. He is responsible for the students’ academic success and extra co-curricular activities. With his profound passion for teaching, he became a private tutor for science subjects and technical drawing. To date, he has a teaching experience of more than a decade. A meticulous video editor and an avid musician, he had initiated and championed almost all ASIQS’ innovative teaching methods such as learning thorough music and games. He had also successfully use rich multimedia content in his teachings. Now, he shared his expertise and creative talent in training a new generation of ASIQS teaching team.
