Rennell`s Spotlight Teacher for 2014
Issue 7 “To Perform Better Today Than We Did Yesterday” April 2015 COUNSELOR CORNER, APRIL 2015 COUNSELING SERVICES GUIDANCE Rennell counselors are available to counsel with students and consult with staff and/or parents, as needed, to help children with issues and situations affecting them at school. Parents who would like to contact a counselor for such consultation, or to request the counselor meet with their child, may use the contact information below. It is a privilege to partner with the Rennell families in order to help children be more successful. March and April classroom guidance lessons focus on 3rd, 4 , and 5th grade preparing their minds and bodies for testing using positive self‐talk, relaxation strategies, imagining themselves doing well, eating healthy meals and snacks, taking a few short “brain breaks”, getting a good night’s rest, and using bubbling and other strategies taught by their teachers. th HORIZONS, CFISD’S GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM Several parents have asked if their child will need to retest every year to qualify again for Horizons. In CFISD, once a student qualifies for HORIZONS, they remain in the program unless parents choose to remove them from the program, or unless their grades require them to be removed. There is also an option for a furlough, which is a one‐year leave (no longer, no shorter) from the program, often by parent request due to an unusual stress. Results for grades 1 through 5 GT testing are scheduled to be sent home April 28, 2015. However, if results arrive late from the scoring company, the results will be sent home a few days later. For those students whose scores make them eligible for placement in HORIZONS, parent permission form for placement will be included with the results reports along with the deadline for returning that permission form to Cheryl Schindler. For students who do not qualify for placement, but do qualify for an appeal of the placement decision, directions and deadlines for requesting an appeal will be included with the results. 1st through 5th grade students who qualify for HORIZONS due to Spring 2015 testing will begin receiving services in August 2015. 5TH GRADE MIDDLE SCHOOL TRANSITION Lori Lambert, 5th grade counselor this year, is coordinating registration of our 5th graders for middle school. All 3 middle schools for which Rennell is a feeder elementary have visited with their future 6th graders from our 5th grade. All students have taken home the form to register for electives, which should have been returned by now. Other information regarding middle school registration will be sent home a few times between now and the end of the school year. Talk to your child about showing any information about middle school to you so that you and your child can discuss, understand, and when necessary, make decisions about next year’s middle school experience and program.
