Thanks to this super group of community league volunteers! We have one of the fullest community league boards in years. If you were thinking this is a good time to join a very healthy and positive board, we still need a Vice President, a Buildings and Grounds Director, Publicity Director, Program Director and we could use an indoor soccer manager. Give me a shout or drop me an email if you want to join this exceptional team and make a huge difference in your community. “Poplar” District Park Party on June 20, 2009 Lots of news regarding the new district park in Belle Rive. The Northeast Parks Steering Committee and Area 17 gathered input and have submitted a proposal to name Lake District District Park as Poplar District Park to celebrate its connection with Poplar Lake to the north and all of the pathway corridors and the natural areas and corridors being protected east of Lago Lindo towards 66 Street. If it all works out we will have a major connection between paths, parks, district parks and natural areas that circle half a dozen northern neighborhoods. The Belle Rive P3 Public Elementary-Junior High School is under construction and according to the Alberta Government will be finished in time for fall 2010. In honour of the new district park Evansdale, McLeod and Northmount communities leagues have tentatively agreed to host a community party on June 20, 2009 to mark the end of the outdoor soccer season and celebrate the opening of the District Park in style! Watch for details. President’s Message Evansdale Elections A Success! Evansdale volunteers celebrated and were celebrated at a joint Northmount-Lago-Lindo-Evansdale volunteer party on October 18. Evansdale said thank you and good bye to an exceptional pair of volunteers: Thanks to Graham Samycia our exceptional outgoing soccer director for two years. Graham has moved to Castledowns and retired from our board on October 23, 2008. A big thank you also to Corey Mahood, our outgoing membership director for her excellent work and her very positive contributions to Evansdale. Then at our AGM on October 23 Shawna Walsh retired as the best Bingo Director on the planet, but even better yet, she is staying on as a director at large. Thanks Shawna! Jackie Nahayowksi is our wonderful outgoing Treasuerer. We thank her for her excellent work from the bottom of our hearts—and the good news is she’s staying on too in her new role as Director of Ways and Means! The past couple of months have been extremely busy for myself and my family as some of you may be aware. I have accepted the president position with the Eagles which added a little bit more to my plate. This year the Eagles have 18 teams 5 novice, 6 atom, 4 pee-wee and 3 bantam. I would like to thank everyone involved in helping out this year, many hands divides the tasks. Good Luck to the players, coaches and the teams. I hope everyone is having fun playing this awesome sport! We are looking forward to the excitement of Edmonton Minor Hockey Week 2009, Januray 9 - 18th. New on 97th There was a public meeting regarding an application by Loblaws to build a No Frills food store on the site between 157 Avenue and Blockbuster along 97 Street. The proposal voluntarily sets a limit of 80,000 sq. feet on the single largest potential tenant, the same restrictions that are on the site to the north. Loblaws says they are proposing a 33,000 sq. foot store and up to 34,000 sq. feet of associated establishments (possibly a gas station and other compatible businesses. The Community League attended the meeting and asked questions about traffic, drainage, access and other related issues. We are still wondering what will be done to manage the traffic on 95 Street coming on to 153 Avenue, once the road opens inside the neighborhood. The City of Edmonton meanwhile has purchased the large site to the north of 157 Ave. that is currently zoned for commercial and high density housing. The City invited members of the former Eaux Claires working group to provide input on their proposal for a Transit Centre and park and ride facility which is now proposed for the site to the north of 157 Ave. The committee was set up a few years ago to resolve the Wal-Mart issue. The committee includes people from Belle Rive, Eaux Claires, Evansdale and Castle Downs and the Jamatkana at 153 Ave. and 95 Street. The next step will be for the City to present a detailed proposal. The Community League would like to see high design standards for the transit centre, good landscaping, good security, and good noise management. This process Is ongoing. The new Belle Rive school is under construction. Here’s what we know from an Alberta Government slide show and the Edmonton Public School board website: • Kindergarten to Grade 9 • Capacity 650 students (expandable) • Opening September 2010 • Serving Eaux Claires, Belle Rive, Mayliewan and Ozerna • P3 Schools will be “owned and operated by school boards” • “Private sector will not own or lease schools there will be no 3rd party revenue.” • “Use and access to new schools will be the same as existing schools.” • Website for info on Lake District School: http:// lakedistrict.epsb.ca/ What it takes to make Edmonton Minor Hockey Week Happen: • 500 teams from Edmonton, St. Albert an Shewood Park, ranging in age from 7 - 17 • Over 8,500 participants • 709 games played • 68 finalists • 26 arenas • 32 sheets of ice • Approximately 3,000 volunteers • $30,000 of donated time on behalf of the referees CHILDCARE - MY HOME Evansdale 88st 151ave Nutrious Meals * Crafts * Activities * Former Playschool Teacher full time / part time / after school 780-476-5852 Play hard, Play Safe and Above All Have Fun!
