The Future of Marine apps
How to keep up
5
Lots of Applications
•
•
•
•
Over 900,000 apps for the Apple devices
About 850,000 apps for the Andriod
Most of these applications run on ALL mobile devices
A year ago there were half this number
6
The “Compute Power” of Mobile
Devices
– In 1985 The Cray 2 supercomputer had eight
processors and could do 1.65 billion floating
point calculations per second. The iPhone and
iPad have the same computer power as the Cray
2.
– The Cray 2 cost about $10 million and required a
very large room for all of the storage disks and
peripheral equipment.
– You can buy an iPhone for about $100 and hold it
in your hand.
7
How to Take Care of Your Mobile
Device
• Not waterproof
• Not crushproof
• Lots of options for water and crush
protection
– A water proof iPhone is coming soon
8
Pelican Case
9
Document/Book Access
• PDF readers ( iBooks, Good Reader, others)
•
- Notability: can make notations on PDF files
•
- equipment manuals
•
- schematic diagrams of boat systems
•
- sailing/boating references
•
- Coast Pilots
•
- Light lists
•
- Chart #1
• Airline Pilots and NFL Playbooks
You can store enough books to fit on a book shelf
1,700 feet long on an iPhone

Chartplotter
Things to remember
• After you lay out your route, check for:
– Shallow water
– Obstructions in the water
– Buoys
• Don’t make a buoy your way point; offset the weight
point from the buoy
– Bridge and cable heights
19
Practical Sailor Summary
• Should not use mobile devices as your
primary navigation tool
• Useful for a back up system
• Have paper charts as a backup as well
